Douglas L Kelley
R1,487 R1,331 Discovery Miles 13 310 Save R156 (10%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Intimate Spaces: A Conversation about Discovery and Connection provides readers the opportunity to discuss, muse, ponder, and explore an essential part of the human experience-intimacy. The book provides a rich, full perspective on intimacy, highlighting its presence in a range of relationships, identifying challenges that can impede its development, and presenting social science research to foster greater understanding. The book features a variety of viewpoints on intimacy, including examples of how it can emerge through talk, play, grief, forgiveness, conflict, and sex. The text features three conversations, or parts, that encourage engagement, participation, and reflection. The first conversation explores the nature of intimacy, examining relational closeness, why intimacy is a significant aspect of life, and how it can act as an agent of transformation within relationships. The second conversation examines common perspectives that can limit personal and relational experience and dispels common myths about intimacy. The final conversation illuminates unexpected spaces for intimacy to emerge and surprising ways to be intimate in personal relationships. Developed to broaden readers' understanding of this critical aspect of personal relationships, Intimate Spaces is an ideal text for relationship-based courses and all those interested in developing their understanding of this essential facet of interpersonal communication.

On the Question of Truth in the Era of Trump (Paperback): Faith Agostinone Wilson On the Question of Truth in the Era of Trump (Paperback)
Faith Agostinone Wilson
R1,286 Discovery Miles 12 860 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Using a range of critical perspectives, On the Question of Truth in the Era of Trump closely examines notions of "truth in crisis" leading up to and after the election of Donald Trump. The authors explore how truth is constructed along the lines of race, social class, and gender as filtered through the self-referential characteristics of social media in particular. The authors assert that the US left has shown itself inadequate to the task of confronting right wing ideologies, which have only intensified since the 2016 election, resulting in increased mobilization of white supremacist and nationalist groups. Whether underestimating Trump by downplaying the threat of his candidacy during the primaries, trivializing the concerns of women and minorities as "identity politics," or rushing to prioritize the free speech rights of the far-right, left academics and the media have found themselves unable to use their traditional arsenal of evidence, rational discourse, and appeals to diversity of viewpoints. The authors assert that political resistance to the right is not a matter of playful use of signs and symbols or discourse alone and has to be fought directly and in solidarity. At this point, it is clear that Trump and his supporters have not just deployed relativism as a form of strategy, but have fully weaponized it against their perceived enemies: women, immigrants, minorities, LGBTQ people along with educational, scientific, and journalistic institutions. It is hoped that this in-depth, critical dissection of truth in the current political reality will assist in the project of resistance. Contributors are: Faith Agostinone-Wilson, Mike Cole, Jeremy T. Godwin, Jones Irwin, Austin Pickup, Daniel Ian Rubin, and Eric C. Sheffield.

Exploring Empathy - Its Propagations, Perimeters & Potentialities (Paperback): Rebeccah Nelems, Nic Theo Exploring Empathy - Its Propagations, Perimeters & Potentialities (Paperback)
Rebeccah Nelems, Nic Theo
R1,564 Discovery Miles 15 640 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Popular interest in empathy has surged in the past two decades. Research on its origins, uses and development is on the rise, and empathy is increasingly referenced across a wide range of sectors - from business to education. While there is widespread consensus about the value of empathy, however, its supposed stable nature and offerings remain insufficiently examined. By critically exploring different perspectives and aspects of empathy in distinct contexts, Exploring Empathy aims to generate deeper reflection about what is at stake in discussions and practices of empathy in the 21st century. Ten contributors representing seven disciplines and five world regions contribute to this dialogical volume about empathy, its offerings, limitations and potentialities for society. By deepening our understanding of empathy in all its complexity, this volume broadens the debate about both the role of empathy in society, and effective ways to invoke it for the benefit of all.

Introduction to Intergroup Dialogues (Paperback): Stephanie Hicks Introduction to Intergroup Dialogues (Paperback)
Stephanie Hicks
R3,542 R3,017 Discovery Miles 30 170 Save R525 (15%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Introduction to Intergroup Dialogues provides students and facilitators with an exemplary resource for learning about and conducting intergroup dialogues. The anthology weaves classic texts within the discipline with illuminating reflection and comprehension questions. The readings are designed to support student learning of social justice education concepts, as well as intergroup dialogue skills and techniques, as they move through the dialogue experiences. The book is divided into four units, which reflect the stages of intergroup dialogue: forming and building relationships; exploring group differences and commonalities; exploring hot topics; and building alliances and planning for action. In Unit I, readings outline the origins, learning outcomes, and structure of intergroup dialogue, and introduce students to a key pedagogical technique-affirming inquiry. Unit II contains readings on social identity, group membership, socialization, oppression, and their manifestations. Unit III provides resources to support students' navigation through pressing social issues that can illuminate how we think and communicate about difference at the individual, institutional, and structural levels. In Unit IV, students read about allyship, coalition building, accountability, and self- and community care. Finally, they are encouraged to consider how to apply what they've learned in dialogue outside the classroom.

The Intoxication of Destruction in Theory, Culture and Media - A Philosophy of Expenditure after Georges Bataille (Hardcover):... The Intoxication of Destruction in Theory, Culture and Media - A Philosophy of Expenditure after Georges Bataille (Hardcover)
Erin K. Stapleton
R3,314 Discovery Miles 33 140 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book examines the desire for, and intoxication with destruction as it appears in cultural objects and representation, arguing that all cultural and aesthetic value is fundamentally predicated on its own fragility, as well as the living transience of those who make and encounter it. Beginning with a philosophy of expenditure after Georges Bataille, each chapter maps different operations of destruction in media and culture. These operations are expressed and located in representations of human extinction and explosive architecture, in execution and in eroticism, and in media and digital archives, which constitute a further destabilization of the notion of destruction in the dynamic between aspirational immortality and material volatility embedded in the archival systems of digital cultures.

Brenda Laurel - Pioneering Games for Girls (Hardcover): Carly A Kocurek Brenda Laurel - Pioneering Games for Girls (Hardcover)
Carly A Kocurek
R3,332 Discovery Miles 33 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Brenda Laurel is best known for her work with Purple Moon, the pioneering game company she cofounded in the 1990s. Purple Moon's games were based on years of research Laurel completed in an effort to understand why computer games seemed to be of so little interest to girls. Using diverse archival sources such as trade journals, newspapers, and recorded interviews, alongside Laurel's completed games and own writings and an original interview with Laurel herself, this volume offers insight into both the early development of the games for girls movement of the 1990s and the lasting impact of Laurel's game design breakthroughs. In her work with Purple Moon, Laurel drew on her background in theatre as well as her expertise in human computer interaction and qualitative research. By relying on this interdisciplinary background, Laurel made significant contributions to our understanding of the design and development of games as a medium for emotional rehearsal and storytelling. Additionally, her dedication to research-informed design has had a longstanding impact as companies and designers increasingly rely on audience research and metrics to shape their practices. The newest in Bloomsbury's Influential Video Game Designers series, Carly Kocurek highlights the contributions of a designer whose work has had a profound impact on the development of both games for girls and empathy games.

Online Activism in the Middle East - Political Power and Authoritarian Governments from Egypt to Kuwait (Hardcover): Jon... Online Activism in the Middle East - Political Power and Authoritarian Governments from Egypt to Kuwait (Hardcover)
Jon Nordenson
R4,320 Discovery Miles 43 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Does the internet facilitate social and political change, or even democratization, in the Middle East? Despite existing research on this subject, there is still no consensus on the importance of social media and online platforms, or on how we are to understand their influence. This book provides empirical analysis of the day-to-day use of online platforms by activists in Egypt and Kuwait. The research evaluates the importance of online platforms for effecting change and establishes a specific framework for doing so. Egypt and Kuwait were chosen because, since the mid-2000s, they have been the most prominent Arab countries in terms of online and offline activism. In the context of Kuwait, Jon Nordenson examines the oppositional youth groups who fought for a constitutional, democratic monarchy in the emirate. In Egypt, focus surrounds the groups and organizations working against sexual violence and sexual harassment. Online Activism in the Middle East shows how and why online platforms are used by activists and identifies the crucial features of successful online campaigns. Egypt and Kuwait are revealed to be authoritarian contexts but where the challenges and possibilities faced by activists are quite different. The comparative nature of this research therefore exposes the context-specific usage of online platforms, separating this from the more general features of online activism. Nordenson demonstrates the power of online activism to create an essential 'counterpublic' that can challenge an authoritarian state and enable excluded groups to fight in ways that are far more difficult to suppress than a demonstration.

Women Negotiating Feminism and Science Fiction Fandom - The Case of the "Good" Fan (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Neta Yodovich Women Negotiating Feminism and Science Fiction Fandom - The Case of the "Good" Fan (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Neta Yodovich
R2,867 Discovery Miles 28 670 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book follows the ways in which women negotiate and navigate between their feminist identities and their belonging to science fiction fandoms that at times disregard or dismiss them. It explores frictions and discords, including those between feminist women fans and other members in their communities, and between the fan and the object of her fandom. This book examines the intersection of fandom and feminism through the lenses of gender, ethnicity and age, and provides an in-depth and intersectional perspective on fan communities and the layered discrimination and marginalization enfolded in them. Based on 40 in-depth interviews with women fans of Star Wars and Doctor Who, this book highlights the different aspects of a feminist woman fan's identity: becoming, being, belonging, representing, and reconciling. Each chapter in this book unravels the complexity, ambivalence, and contradictions between feminism and fandom, and reveals the tactics women develop to overcome and harmonize them.

Hybrid Museum Experiences - Theory and Design (Hardcover): Annika Waern, Anders Lovlie Hybrid Museum Experiences - Theory and Design (Hardcover)
Annika Waern, Anders Lovlie
R3,340 Discovery Miles 33 400 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"So you're the one getting this gift? Lucky you! Someone who knows you has visited the museum. They searched out things they thought you would care about, and they took photos and left messages for you." This is the welcoming message for the Gift app, designed to create a very personal museum visit. Hybrid Museum Experiences use new technologies to augment, expand or alter the physical experience of visiting the museum. They are designed to be experienced in close relation to the physical space and exhibit. In this book we discuss three forms of hybridity in museum experiences: Incorporating the digital and the physical, creating social, yet personal and intimate experiences, and exploring ways to balance visitor participation and museum curation. This book reports on a 3-year cross-disciplinary research project in which artists, design researchers and museum professionals have collaborated to create technology-mediated experiences that merge with the museum environment.

How Superheroes Model Community - Philosophically, Communicatively, Relationally (Hardcover): Nathan Miczo How Superheroes Model Community - Philosophically, Communicatively, Relationally (Hardcover)
Nathan Miczo
R2,690 Discovery Miles 26 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

From the perspectives of positive psychology and positive communication, superheroes are often depicted as possessing virtues and serving as inspirational exemplars. However, many of the virtues enumerated as characterizing the superhero (e.g., courage, teamwork, creativity) could just as easily be applied to heroes of other genres. To understand what is unique to the superhero genre, How Superheroes Model Community: Philosophically, Communicatively, Relationally looks not only to the virtues that animate them, but also to the underlying moral framework that gives meaning to those virtues. The key to understanding their character is that often they save strangers, and they do so in the public sphere. The superhero's moral framework, therefore, must encompass both the motivation to act to benefit others rather than themselves (especially people to whom they have no relational obligation) and to preserve the public sphere against those who would disrupt it. Given such a framework, Nathan Miczo argues that superheroes are not, and could not, be loners. They constantly form team-ups, super teams, alliances, partnerships, take on mentorship roles, and create sidekicks. Social constructionist approaches in the communication field argue that communication, in part, works to shape and create our social reality. Through this lens, Miczo proposes that superheroes maintain themselves as a community through the communicative practices they engage in.

Story Revolutions - Collective Narratives from the Enlightenment to the Digital Age (Hardcover): Helga Lenart-Cheng Story Revolutions - Collective Narratives from the Enlightenment to the Digital Age (Hardcover)
Helga Lenart-Cheng
R2,542 Discovery Miles 25 420 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Social media has facilitated the sharing of once isolated testimonies to an extent and with an ease never before possible. The #MeToo movement provides a prime example of how such pooling of individual stories, in large enough numbers, can fuel political movements, fortify a sense of solidarity and community, and compel public reckoning by bringing important issues into mainstream consciousness. In this timely and important study, Helga Lenart-Cheng has uncovered the antecedents of this phenomenon and provided a historical and critical analysis of this seemingly new but in fact deeply rooted tradition. Story Revolutions features a rich variety of case studies, from eighteenth-century memoir collections to contemporary Web 2.0 databases, including memoir contests, digital story-maps, crowd-sourced Covid diaries, and AI-assisted life writing. It spans the Enlightenment, the 1930s, and the twenty-first century-three historical periods marked by a convergence of mass movements and new methods of data collection that led to a boom in activism based in the aggregation and communication of stories. Ultimately, this book offers readers a critical perspective on the concept of community itself, with incisive reflections on what it means to use storytelling to build democracy in the twenty-first century.
