Nonviolent Communication - A Language of Life (Paperback, 3rd Revised edition): Marshall B. Rosenberg Nonviolent Communication - A Language of Life (Paperback, 3rd Revised edition)
Marshall B. Rosenberg; Foreword by Deepak Chopra
R520 R491 Discovery Miles 4 910 Save R29 (6%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

What is Violent Communication? If “violent” means acting in ways that result in hurt or harm, then much of how we communicate—judging others, bullying, having racial bias, blaming, finger pointing, discriminating, speaking without listening, criticizing others or ourselves, name-calling, reacting when angry, using political rhetoric, being defensive or judging who’s “good/bad” or what’s “right/wrong” with people—could indeed be called “violent communication.”

So what is Nonviolent Communication?

Nonviolent Communication is the integration of four things:

  • Consciousness: a set of principles that support living a life of compassion, collaboration, courage, and authenticity
  • Language: understanding how words contribute to connection or distance
  • Communication: knowing how to ask for what we want, how to hear others even in disagreement, and how to move toward solutions that work for all
  • Means of influence: sharing “power with others” rather than using “power over others”

Nonviolent Communication serves our desire to do three things: Increase our ability to live with choice, meaning, and connection. Connect empathically with self and others to have more satisfying relationships. Sharing of resources so everyone is able to benefit.

Warriors' Words - A Consideration of Language and Leadership (Hardcover, New): Keith S. Felton Warriors' Words - A Consideration of Language and Leadership (Hardcover, New)
Keith S. Felton
R2,773 Discovery Miles 27 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Public discourse receives the concerted attention of linguists, political analysts, and others involved with language as a persuasive tool of communication. Yet sometimes overlooked is the fact that the impact of much modern political communication comes from aesthetic attributes. Effectiveness of delivery, poetry of expression, and emotional investment of the rhetorician give the audience a gauge for determining the speaker's sincerity. Warriors' Words examines leadership in the present century by scrutinizing the oral and written communications of 15 remarkable individuals at critical periods of their lives. Drawing on the words of Mohandas Gandhi, Clarence Darrow, Adolf Hitler, Winston Churchill, Joseph McCarthy, Adlai Stevenson, and Martin Luther King, among others, the author shows how language can dramatically transform listeners into agents of change. Moreover, the author analyzes how exemplary rhetoric can promote the development of motivation, the refinement of thought, and the binding together of peoples into positive forces for action. This study of the use and impact of words by significant social figures will be of interest to all students of rhetoric, politics, and history.

Untying the Tongue - Gender, Power, and the Word (Hardcover, New): Linda Longmire, Lisa Merrill Untying the Tongue - Gender, Power, and the Word (Hardcover, New)
Linda Longmire, Lisa Merrill
R2,803 Discovery Miles 28 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The words and grammatical structure of a given language are the most basic building blocks of thought and communication; they reflect the ways speakers conceptualize themselves and their world and communicate with others. Since language reflects a culture's biases and inequities, a socially constructed, gendered power differential between men and women may lead each to have very different relationships to language. The essays in this collection explore some of the ways in which power and its expression (or repression) is gendered. The contributors seek to discover contexts and patterns within which power is articulated, reproduced, and ultimately transformed. While some contributors provide primarily descriptive examinations of presumed gender differences, others seek to critique or deconstruct these supposed meanings associated with gender and power relationships. An important collection for scholars and researchers involved with communication and with gender issues.

Manipulation of the American Voter - Political Campaign Commercials (Hardcover): Gary A. Copeland, Karen S. Johnson-Cartee Manipulation of the American Voter - Political Campaign Commercials (Hardcover)
Gary A. Copeland, Karen S. Johnson-Cartee
R2,788 Discovery Miles 27 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Manipulation of the American Voter" is a research-based examination of the theoretical and practical reasons for successful political advertising. It provides the means necessary to analyze political commercials, and by presenting the motives behind advertising strategies and tactics used in contemporary politics, the authors seek to free their readers from the inherent manipulation in political advertising. By analyzing political advertising as both a science and an art form, the authors unlock the mysteries of how millions of voters are manipulated each campaign season. This study, therefore, offers scholars and students of the electoral process the knowledge to see through the veil of political advertising and participate more fully in the political system.

The White House Speaks - Presidential Leadership as Persuasion (Hardcover, New): Craig A. Smith, Kathy B. Smith The White House Speaks - Presidential Leadership as Persuasion (Hardcover, New)
Craig A. Smith, Kathy B. Smith
R2,790 Discovery Miles 27 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This work treats presidential leadership as persuasive communication. The major theories of presidential leadership found in the literature establish the central role of persuasion, and introduce the interpretive systems approach to political communication as a theoretical framework for the study of presidential leadership as persuasion. Case studies examine recent presidents' use of public persuasion to perform their leadership functions. Particular attention is devoted to coalitional constraints on presidential pardoning rhetoric, presidential leadership through the politics of division, the political significance of conflicting political narratives, the sermonic nature of much 20th-century presidential discourse, the difficulties inherent in persuading the public to make sacrifices, and the dangers of relying too heavily on public rhetoric. The concluding chapter considers the rhetoric that contributed to the demise of the Bush presidency, the election of Bill Clinton, and the challenges facing the Clinton presidency.

A Comparative Study of Chinese and Western Legal Language and Culture (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Falian Zhang A Comparative Study of Chinese and Western Legal Language and Culture (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Falian Zhang
R4,175 Discovery Miles 41 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book involves a variety of aspects and levels, including the diachronic and synchronic dimensions. Law profoundly affects our daily lives, but its language and culture can at times be nearly impossible to understand. As a comparative study of Chinese and Western legal language and legal culture, this book investigates the similarities and differences of both sides and identifies their respective advantages and disadvantages. Accordingly, it considers both social and cultural functions, and both theoretical and practical values. Firstly, the book addresses the differences, that is, the basic frameworks and disparities between the Chinese and Western legal languages and legal cultures. Secondly, it explores relevant changes over time, that is, the historical evolution and the basic driving forces that were at work before the Chinese and Western legal languages and cultures "met." Lastly, the book elaborates on their fusion, that is, the conflicts and changes in Chinese and Western legal languages and cultures in China in the modern era, as well as the introduction, transplantation and transformation of Western legal culture.

The Ethical Nexus - Communication, Values and Organization Decisions (Hardcover, New): Charles Conrad The Ethical Nexus - Communication, Values and Organization Decisions (Hardcover, New)
Charles Conrad
R2,787 Discovery Miles 27 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

During the 1980s, organizational theorists and managers alike rediscovered the role that values play in organizational life and became concerned about the apparent lack of values that underlie unethical organizational behavior. This volume examines the complex interrelationships among values, ethics, and organizational decision making. It focuses on communication, because it is through discourse that people develop their own moral codes, organizations develop and inculcate core values and ethical precepts, and incongruities within and between value sets are negotiated. Each essay also deals with modes of making decisions.

Urszula Michalik, Pawel Zakrajewski, Iwona Sznicer, Anna Stwora
R4,132 Discovery Miles 41 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book aims to present the results of research in the sphere of business language and culture, as well as the experience of pedagogical staff and practitioners concerned with broadly understood business. The highly complex nature of contemporary business environment, approached from both the theoretical and practical standpoint, does not cease to prove that research into business studies cannot be dissociated from the cultural and linguistic context. The chapters included in this book were contributed by academics and practitioners alike, which offers a balanced approach to the topic and ensures high levels of diversity together with an undeniable homogeneity. They were gathered with a view to show various aspects of business language, perceived both as a medium of communication and as a subject of research and teaching. They are concerned with business culture as well, including business ethics and representations of business in popular culture. Owing to its multidisciplinary approach, the book presents a roadmap towards successful functioning in business settings, highlighting such issues as education for business purposes, the study of language used in business contexts, the aspects of cross-cultural communication, as well as ethical behaviour based upon different values in multicultural business environments. Given its multifarious character, the book surely appeals not only to academics, but also to the interested laymen and students who wish to expand their knowledge of business studies and related phenomena.

Ronald L Jackson
R2,212 Discovery Miles 22 120 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Whiteness is often looked upon and equated with being American, but this book seeks to discover how other American voices and experiences have been and are excluded from the American legacy. It directly addresses the notion of self and human division in a cultural climate that has historically fostered the marginalization of multiple racial identities. This is an interdisciplinary work on understanding and promoting intercultural communication and will be of interest to students and scholars in the fields of communication, multicultural studies, social psychology, and sociology.

R2,785 Discovery Miles 27 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume brings critical theory to bear on a familiar feature of our daily lives- the evening news on television- in order to clarify what it means to talk about hegemony. This book's approach makes accesible to a wider audience another way of seeing an otherwise taken-for-granted dimension of daily life and political culture. By empirically and theoretically reading a text taken from the evening news students can inspect, in a language familiar to them, what issues of ideology and legitimation are about.

R2,814 Discovery Miles 28 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Essays, based on five years of survey research in Iowa and case study examples from across the United States, examine the implications of telecommunications technologies for rural community development. Supported by data from five years of survey and case study research, telecommunications adoption and use is explored in nine sectors of the rural community to determine the influence these organizations and institutions have on telecommunications development within the broader rural community. These sectors include local government, economic development, business, newspapers, library services, health care, university extension to communities, and farming. Also considered are the factors that promote and retard telecommunications development, particularly the impact of telecommunications policy, the availability of state-of-the-art infrastructure and service, and the involvement of telephone companies in local community development. Using a community development framework, this work discusses the physical, financial, human and social capitals necessary for holistic community development and the significance of critical mass, the roles of internal and external networks, as well as vertical and horizontal linkages, and the importance of visionary leadership and the championing of telecommunications.

Social Science and telecommunications scholars will appreciate the interdisciplinary approach these case studies represent. In addition, this research is intended to assist local leaders, community service providers, businesses, community officials, and state policy makers in capturing the potential benefits of innovative telecommunications technologies for local economic development, while avoiding potential problems and pitfalls. Essays are organized in three sections. The first presents theory, policy, and issues within a community development framework. The second discusses perspectives and actions of community sectors in their adoption and use of telecommunications. The third examines what occurs within an organization as it implements a new telecommunications system. Charts and graphs enhance the text and a glossary of terms is provided.

Digital Fictions - Storytelling in a Material World (Hardcover): Sarah Sloane Digital Fictions - Storytelling in a Material World (Hardcover)
Sarah Sloane
R2,771 Discovery Miles 27 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

When researchers in computer-mediated communications discuss digital textuality, they rarely venture beyond the now commonplace notion that computer textuality embodies contemporary post-structuralist theories. Written for students and faculty of contemporary literature and composition theories, this book is the first to move from general to specific considerations. Advancing from general considerations of how computers are changing literacy, Digital Fictions moves on to a specific consideration of how computers are altering one particular set of literature practices: reading and writing fiction. Suffused through the sensibility of a creative writer, this book includes an historical overview of writing stories on computers. In addition, Sloane conducts interviews with the makers of hypertext fictions (including Stuart Moulthrop, Michael Joyce, and Carolyn Guyer) and offers close reading of digital fictions. Making careful analyses of the meaning-making activities of both readers and writers of this emerging genre, this work is embedded in a perspective both feminist and semiotic. Digital Fictions explores and distinguishes among four distinct iterations of text-based digital fictions; text adventures, Carnegie Mellon University Oz Project, hypertext fictions, and MUDs. Ultimately, Sloane revises the rhetorical triangle and proposes a new rhetorical theory, one that attends to the materials, processes, and locations of stories told on-line.

Imagined Audiences - How Journalists Perceive and Pursue the Public (Hardcover): Jacob L. Nelson Imagined Audiences - How Journalists Perceive and Pursue the Public (Hardcover)
Jacob L. Nelson
R2,588 Discovery Miles 25 880 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Many believe the solution to ongoing crises in the news industry-including profound financial instability and public distrust-is for journalists to improve their relationship with their audiences. This raises important questions: How do journalists conceptualize their audiences in the first place? What is the connection between what journalists think about their audiences and what they do to reach them? Perhaps most importantly, how aligned are these "imagined" audiences with the real ones? Imagined Audiences draws on ethnographic case studies of three news organizations to reveal how journalists' assumptions about their audiences shape their approaches to their audiences. Jacob L. Nelson examines the role that audiences have traditionally played in journalism, how that role has changed, and what those changes mean for both the profession and the public. He concludes by drawing on audience studies research to compare journalism's "imagined" audiences with actual observations of news audience behavior. The result is a comprehensive study of both news production and reception at a moment when the relationship between the two has grown more important than ever before.

Managing the Press - Origins of the Media Presidency, 1897-1933 (Hardcover, 1999 ed.): Stephen Ponder Managing the Press - Origins of the Media Presidency, 1897-1933 (Hardcover, 1999 ed.)
Stephen Ponder
R1,525 Discovery Miles 15 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Managing the Press re-examines the emergence of the twentieth century media President, whose authority to govern depends largely on his ability to generate public support by appealing to the citizenry through the news media. From 1897 to 1933, White House successes and failures with the press established a foundation for modern executive leadership and helped to shape patterns of media practices and technologies through which Americans have viewed the presidency during most of the twentieth century. Author Stephen Ponder shows how these findings suggest a new context for contemporary questions about mediated public opinion and the foundations of presidential power, the challenge to the presidency by an increasingly adversarial press, the emergence of 'new media' formats and technologies, and the shaping of presidential leadership for the twenty-first century. Managing the Press explores the rise of the media presidency through the lens of the late-twentieth century, when the relationship between the President and the press is relevant to more important issues than ever before in the context of American politics.

This is an in-depth case study of a joint operating arrangement (between the Seattle Times and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer) and its impact on the five surrounding daily newspapers in its market. The study examines this impact in the context of ten factors in the market, including suburbanization and direct mail. The author focuses on three major topics - circulation, advertising and staffing - to see how they have changed. The study looks at changes to see if they have an impact on the market and on the traditional role of newspapers, which is to provide information and ideas necessary for civic intelligence.

Neuromotor Mechanisms in Human Communication (Hardcover): Doreen Kimura Neuromotor Mechanisms in Human Communication (Hardcover)
Doreen Kimura
R4,082 Discovery Miles 40 820 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Based upon two decades of research with patients who have experienced pathology in one hemisphere of the brain, this book deals with brain mechanisms in human communicative behaviour, and with related motor functions from a broadly biological point of view. The work discusses the possible evolutionary origins of human communication, the relation of brain mechanisms in communicative behaviour to analogous nonhuman behaviors, and the neural systems involved in various levels and kinds of communication. Noncommunicative mechanisms which parallel those used in communication are also outlined in detail. Individual differences in brain organization for some functions are also explored.

Much new data is presented along with the theoretical treatment of human communication which emphasizes a behavioral rather than a linguistic approach. The work will interest psycholinguists, cognitive psychologists, neurologists, clinical neuropsychologists, speech pathologists, and advanced students in these fields.

Mediated Politics in Two Cultures - Presidential Campaigning in the United States and France (Hardcover, New): Jacques Gerstle,... Mediated Politics in Two Cultures - Presidential Campaigning in the United States and France (Hardcover, New)
Jacques Gerstle, Lynda Kaid, Keith R. Sanders
R2,798 Discovery Miles 27 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This first comparative study of the political communication processes in the United States and France brings together researchers from both countries to examine differences and similarities between the media's involvement in each nation's 1988 presidential election campaign. The book analyzes the construction of mediated political reality in the two countries, and concludes that French media do not concentrate more on policy issues than do American media. The authors discuss television news and newsmagazine coverage of the overall campaigns and their particular political debates, television commercials and broadcasts, and political posters. Also assessed are the interactions between party/candidate presentations of political reality and voter interpretations of that reality. The contributions are grouped into four sections: Comparing Politics in Two Cultures, which includes discussions of constructing a political communication project and the theoretical dimensions of the studies; Mediated Campaign Messages, which contains analyses of reality construction, political advertising, and political broadcasts; Media Coverage of the Campaigns; and Implications of Mediated Campaigning, which covers the effects of television broadcasts on voter perception and possibilities for improving the electoral process. This work is a useful resource for students, scholars, and politicians interested in political communication and comparative politics, as well as for journalists and members of the media.

Combining Modern Communication Methods With Heritage Education (Hardcover): Lia Bassa Combining Modern Communication Methods With Heritage Education (Hardcover)
Lia Bassa
R5,830 Discovery Miles 58 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Cultural heritage has tremendous importance in human development. The communication of culture is determinant for society, whereas that of heritage can be a driving force for individual development. If cultural heritage is communicated and incorporated into the educational development of children from the very beginning, it will contribute to the formation of their entire lives and sustainable social development. Combining Modern Communication Methods With Heritage Education provides relevant theoretical frameworks and the latest empirical research findings in the area. It shows that heritage related to information provision is to be started at a very early age and continued by schools and later educational forms. Covering topics such as cultural heritage, world heritage education, and indigenous archives, this premier reference work is an essential resource for educators and administrators of both K-12 and higher education, pre-service teachers, teacher educators, sociologists, anthropologists, business leaders and executives, marketers, librarians, researchers, and academicians.
