The horizons of sophisticated imaging have expanded with the use of
combined positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography
(CT). PET-CT has revolutionized medical imaging by adding anatomic
localization to functional imaging, thus providing physicians with
information that is vital for the accurate diagnosis and treatment
of pathologies. Since the integration of PET and CT several years
ago, PET/CT procedures are now routine at leading medical centers
throughout the world. This has increased the importance of nuclear
medicine physicians acquiring a broad knowledge in sectional
anatomy for image interpretation. The Atlas of Sectional
Radiological Anatomy for PET/CT is a user-friendly guide presenting
high-resolution, full-color images of anatomical detail and focuses
solely on normal FDG distribution throughout the head & neck,
thorax, abdomen, and pelvis, the primary sites for cancer detection
and treatment through PET/CT.
Measurement of solid tumor response to treatment relies mainly on
imaging. WHO tumor response criteria and, more recently, RECIST
(response evaluation criteria in solid tumors) have provided means
to objectively measure tumor response in clinical trials with
imaging. These guidelines have been rapidly adopted in clinical
practice to monitor patient treatment and for therapy planning.
However, relying only on anatomical information is not always
sufficient when evaluating new drugs that will reduce a tumor's
functionality while preserving its size. Finding more reliable and
reproducible measures of tumor response is one of the most
important and difficult challenges facing modern radiology as it
requires an entirely new approach to imaging. The aim of this book
is to address the assessment of response to treatment by adopting a
multidisciplinary perspective, just as occurs in real life in a
comprehensive cancer center. Oncologists and imaging experts
consider two cancer models, locally advanced disease and metastatic
disease, jointly exploring both conventional and advanced means of
measuring response to standard treatment protocols and new targeted
therapies.

This book, Hydrogen Peroxide: A Health, Homeostatic and Protective
Essentiality, verifies the crucial role of hydrogen peroxide,
oxygen free radicals and electronically modified oxygen derivatives
(EMODs) in healing, sexual function, reproduction, pathogen
protection and cancer protection. Once again, we see that
electronically modified oxygen derivatives (EMODs) are essential
for homeostasis and normal functioning of the body and its organs.
The fallen free radical theory has radically misled us many times
for over half a century. Oxygen and its electronically modified
oxygen derivative (EMOD) progeny are the sine qua non (the
essential condition) of man's very existence. This is an inarguable
fact. H2O2 is now recognized as a ubiquitous intracellular
messenger under subtoxic conditions. Thus, get out of your head the
concept that EMODs, and in particular hydrogen peroxide, are some
cellular assassinating radical products generated only by angry
PMNs. EMODs and hydrogen peroxide are intentionally generated
salutary cellular products intended to help regulate critical
metabolic and reproductive mechanisms. I believe that hydrogen
peroxide is the most prevalent, and perhaps the most significant
EMOD in the body, even exceeding the well recognized importance of
nitric oxide. Hydrogen peroxide is ubiquitous, omnipresent and in
steady state levels in all aerobic cells, due to its crucial
protective role in sustaining and perpetuating mankind.

Developments in biochemistry have contributed immensely to the rate
at which medical knowledge has expended in recent years. Following
the GMC recommendations regarding undergraduate medical education,
Biochemistry for Clinical Medicine integrates, in a single volume,
all aspects of biochemistry required by a medical student, with a
special focus on information specific to medicine as opposed to
laboratory-based biochemistry. The first section of the book
provides an understanding of basic cell biology and the critical
concepts of membrane transport, cellular energetics, information
storage, transmission and expression, as well as describing the
essential chemistry and metabolism of cellular biomolecules and the
clinical conditions that arise from disturbances in their
metabolism. The second section adopts a systems-based approach to
present clinical biochemistry in an easily readable and concise
manner, using tables and clear diagrams to summarise important
facts, as well as providing information on the biochemical basis of
good nutrition.
Evolutionary Medicine is based upon the view that many contemporary social, psychological, and physical illnesses are related to an incompatibility between current human lifestyles and environments and the conditions under which human biology developed. This book, featuring contributions from many of the leading workers in this developing area, provides a good introduction and overview to this emerging field.
Despite many encouraging developments in the field of animal-free
technologies, well-defined animal models are still needed to study
fundamental properties of human diseases and to develop new
prophylactic and therapeutic treatments against human diseases.
Non-human primates (NHP) make up only a small, but important, part
of the total number of animals used in biomedical and preclinical
research. Due to their close phylogenetic relationship and the
shared susceptibility to many human diseases, NHP can provide
important research models to study these diseases and, as such,
play a critical role in the advancement of various areas in the
medical field. Studies in NHP have contributed to our understanding
of various diseases and fundamental biological phenomena and they
continue to be important in the development of new therapies,
treatments, drugs and vaccines. Moreover, NHP models also
contribute to our general knowledge of the processes that underlie
non-disease and disease conditions. Important areas where NHP can
provide important information include (emerging) infectious
diseases, organ transplantation, neurological and aging-related
disorders. Although not covered in this book due to time
constraints, the need for, and benefits of, NHP models has been
demonstrated most recently in the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The present
book is the second of two volumes and covers important disease
areas where NHP are used as model species. This volume includes
different chapters on NHP models in infectious diseases, aging,
neurodegenerative disorders, organ transplantation and cancer.
Dr. Paul Sanghera, the best selling author of several books in
science and technology, presents more than 300 biochemistry
flashcards in this book. The goal is to help you master the core
biochemistry (and molecular biology) concepts, principles, and
processes, which are prerequisites for pursuing studies and a

these flash cards after reading a biochemistry text book, it's
equivalent to going through the text book once again, only in much
less time. *The flashcards are student-friendly and self-contained
and no reference to any other book is made. This means these cards
work with any book and independent of any book. * These flash cards
come in a book, not in a box of loose cards; so these are much
easier to manage than those loose cards. No more loose cards, no
more lost cards. *This book is designed as a convenient and
portable reference for on-the-go studying. You can take it anywhere
and use it when a time window becomes available. * It includes a
special chapter that illustrates the biochemistry processes. Here
is how you can use this book: * As a useful companion to your
textbook if you are taking a biochemistry course. * As an
independent reference to quickly review (or overview) basic
biochemistry concepts, terms, and processes. * Although not
designed for any specific exam, the concepts, principles, and
processes covered in this book are pre-requisites to preparing for
any biochemistry related exams such as USMLE and various shelf
exams. Topics covered include: organic chemistry, carbohydrates,
proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, metabolic pathways, and
biochemistry processes.
Realistic yet encouraging, responsible yet wryly humorous, this is
the book that all final-year medical students and junior doctors
will need in planning their careers. Written by the Dean of a
London medical school, who has taken a particular interest in
selecting and training medical students, and helping them to
prepare for a career in medicine, it brings together essential
information on all the specialities, both hospital-based and in the
community. Recognising that medicine is an exciting but also an
exacting way of life, the author touches on the ethical dilemmas
and the personal stresses, as well as the opportunities for
fulfilment, that are an integral part of any medical career. Living
Medicine may be read straight through, or used as a reference
source for specific information on each speciality or group of
specialities. The illustrations, vintage David Langdon, bring the
text to life with insight and humour.
