Books > Medicine > Pre-clinical medicine: basic sciences > General
Catch up Biology 2e covers the basic principles and concepts in biology that you will need if you are studying medicine or a related subject, or one of the biomedical sciences. The book focuses on human biology and covers: the basic molecules of life, such as proteins, carbohydrates, nucleic acids cells, tissues and processes, including energy metabolism, cell division, epithelial and connective tissues the key mammalian systems, for example, homeostasis, the endocrine, respiratory and digestive systems. Throughout the book the authors highlight clinical examples so that you can see the relevance of basic biology to your course. The book also contains questions (and answers) so that you can test your understanding of the subject as you work through the book. This new edition features two new chapters on microorganisms and on genetic disease. Catch up Biology is the ideal book to refresh your understanding of the basic concepts of biology.
Signals and Systems for Speech and Hearing (2nd edition) provides the reader with a thorough introduction to the concepts of signals and systems analysis that play a role in the speech and hearing sciences. Few equations are used, and an informal, friendly and informative style is maintained throughout. Because much of the story is told through figures, the authors have gone to great lengths to provide clear and truthful figures that show what the text says they do. It is hoped the reader will come away with a strong visual understanding of the concepts involved. This book can be used at many levels, from the student who hasn't heard of a spectrum before, to the experienced worker who has only a fuzzy understanding of the notion of an impulse response. The authors have tried to keep the underlying conceptual structure of signals and systems analysis explicit, in the hope that even some readers with advanced technical training might find clarification of the basic principles. Notable features include over 300 figures integrated closely with the text, all drawn specifically. Exercises are provided at the end of most chapters.
This is an account of a project in China carried out in secrecy from the Chinese people and the Western World during the tumultuous years of the Cultural Revolution. Project 523, as it was called, resulted in one of the most significant advances in the treatment of malaria since the discovery and first use of quinine over 300 years ago. The origin of the project was a request from the North Vietnamese Government to Mao Zedong in China, for assistance in managing chloroquine drug-resistant malaria affecting their military forces during the Vietnam-American war. Initially the project was directed by the Chinese military medical research authorities, but it became so large that civilian scientists were called upon to help. Ultimately, to accomplish this task, over 60 institutions and more than 500 scientists and other personnel scattered throughout mainland China became involved. This achievement is all the more remarkable because it was accomplished during the Cultural Revolution using obsolete equipment, and at a time when all regular research was halted, scientists were harassed and denigrated, and academic and intellectual activity was discouraged or even forbidden. The drug discovered - artemisinin from the plant Qinghao (Artemisia annua L) - is now the most widely used treatment for malaria in the world. Chinese Editor Zhang Jianfang was the principal administrator of Project 523. He is now 87 years old, retired, and lives in Beijing. Translators Keith and Muoi Arnold of Northern California were the first Western medical scientists to be informed about and to publish on qinghaosu (artemisinin). Realistic yet encouraging, responsible yet wryly humorous, this is the book that all final-year medical students and junior doctors will need in planning their careers. Written by the Dean of a London medical school, who has taken a particular interest in selecting and training medical students, and helping them to prepare for a career in medicine, it brings together essential information on all the specialities, both hospital-based and in the community. Recognising that medicine is an exciting but also an exacting way of life, the author touches on the ethical dilemmas and the personal stresses, as well as the opportunities for fulfilment, that are an integral part of any medical career. Living Medicine may be read straight through, or used as a reference source for specific information on each speciality or group of specialities. The illustrations, vintage David Langdon, bring the text to life with insight and humour.

Despite many encouraging developments in the field of animal-free technologies, well-defined animal models are still needed to study fundamental properties of human diseases and to develop new prophylactic and therapeutic treatments against human diseases. Non-human primates (NHP) make up only a small, but important, part of the total number of animals used in biomedical and preclinical research. Due to their close phylogenetic relationship and the shared susceptibility to many human diseases, NHP can provide important research models to study these diseases and, as such, play a critical role in the advancement of various areas in the medical field. Studies in NHP have contributed to our understanding of various diseases and fundamental biological phenomena and they continue to be important in the development of new therapies, treatments, drugs and vaccines. Moreover, NHP models also contribute to our general knowledge of the processes that underlie non-disease and disease conditions. Important areas where NHP can provide important information include (emerging) infectious diseases, organ transplantation, neurological and aging-related disorders. Although not covered in this book due to time constraints, the need for, and benefits of, NHP models has been demonstrated most recently in the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The present book is the second of two volumes and covers important disease areas where NHP are used as model species. This volume includes different chapters on NHP models in infectious diseases, aging, neurodegenerative disorders, organ transplantation and cancer.
Metal ions are poorly known whereas they sometimes play a role more significant than vitamins. Moreover they control many diseases, such as the zinc salts in dermatology. Another example is the recent discovery of platinum co-ordination compounds' anti-tumor activity (cisplatine). There is a growing volume of literature too. The chemistry of metal ions has provided new insights into DNA, proteins and membrane chemistry, as well as the physiopathology of diseases. This book contains the proceedings of 2nd International Symposium on Metal Ions in Biology and Medicine, Athens, May 1992.
