Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 80 years the Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued.

History of Polyolefins - The World's Most Widely Used Polymers (Hardcover, 1986 ed.): F.B. Seymour, Tai Cheng History of Polyolefins - The World's Most Widely Used Polymers (Hardcover, 1986 ed.)
F.B. Seymour, Tai Cheng
R4,550 Discovery Miles 45 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The word Polyethylene was probably first pronounced in a lecture which M. P. E. Berthelot delivered on April ,27, 1863 to the Chemical Society in Paris, reporting on the "polymerization" of various simple organic compounds (1). Much later this work appeared twice in the literature before the classical ICI breakthrough in the 1930's which is so colorfully described in Ballard's lecture. Once it came up at the end of the last century when H. von Pechmann obtained "a white flocculant material" from the decomposition of diazomethane which, one year later, was termed to be "polymethylene" - (CH ) - from E. Bamberger 2 and F. Tschiemer (1). At that time the investigators were disappointed about this product because it was not what they had expected to find in their experiments. As a result any further work was discontinued. The second time that the word polyethylene appeared in the literature to describe a "white solid powder" was in 1930 when C. S. Marvel and M. E. P. Friedericks (2) attempted to prepare alkylated As compounds in which all five valencies were covalently bonded to five monovalent-aTkyl groups. They reacted Tetra-ethyl-arsenium bromide with butyllithium and expected to get tetra ethyl butyl arsenium. Instead they obtained LiBr + AsEt3 + gaseous products. Delicate and somewhat time-consuming analysis gave a surprising result: ethane and C 's were there in the 4 expected quantities but ethylene was missing - or almost missing - in the gas mixture.

Advances in Amino Acid Mimetics and Peptidomimetics, Volume 2 (Hardcover): A. Abell Advances in Amino Acid Mimetics and Peptidomimetics, Volume 2 (Hardcover)
A. Abell
R3,411 Discovery Miles 34 110 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Peptidomimetics have found wide application as bioavailable, and often potent mimetics of natural peptides. They form the basis of important classes of enzyme inhibitors, they act as receptor agonists and antagonists, and they have even been used to mimic DNA structure. Recent advances in the use of solid-phase organic synthesis have paved the way for the preparation of libraries of these structures to allow the rapid optimization of theri biological properties and hence therapeutic potential. We are also beginning to gain a greater understanding of the structural features of this class of compounds that influence their ability to permeate membranes, and their rate of clearance and metabolism. This volume brings together many of these critical issues by highlighting recent advances in a number of core peptidomimetic-based research.

Karsten Krohn
R8,325 Discovery Miles 83 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

More than 15 years have passed since publication of the last monograph on anthracyclineantibiotics, theACSSymposium Series574, edited byW.Priebe. However, anthracycline antibiotics continue to be one of the most applied antitumor agents, mostly in combination therapy. In addition, a number of exciting new developments such as prodrug development or new synthetic, semi-synthetic, or biosynthetic derivatives have emerged in spite of a certain decrease in synthetic activity. With this background in mind, I accepted the invitation of Prof. J. Thiem to edit an updated collection of reviews on - thracyclineantibiotics. Infact, thistaskturnedouttobeanexciting endeavor andinsteadoftheinitiallyplannedsinglevolume, thenumerouscontributions frommany experts in this exciting ?eld had to be collected into two volumes. Thelast decadehasprovidedamuchgreater amountofnewinformationthen initially anticipated and these volumes represent a condensed review of this data derived fromjournals representing quite different ?elds. The ?rst volume is dedicated to biological occurrence and biosynthesis as well as the synthesis and chemistry of anthracyclines. Since the pioneering review of H. Brockmann on naturally occurring anthracyclines in 1963, no systematic overview has appeared and this volume will provide a review of the latest information. This topic is closely related to biosynthesis and the intriguing progress in biotechnology to produce biosynthetic anthracycline variants is presented. The part of the volume covering synthesis comprises an updated overview on asymmetric synthesis, combinatorial synthesis using the Diels-Alder reaction, synthesis of ?uorinated anthracyclines, the sugar moieties, non-natural glycosyl anthraquinones as DNA binding and pho- cleaving agents, and ?nally of anthracyclines and fredericamycin A via strong base-induced cycloadditionreact

Matrix Isolation Spectroscopy (Hardcover, 1981 ed.): A. Barnes, W.J.Orville- Thomas, R. Gaufres, Achim Muller Matrix Isolation Spectroscopy (Hardcover, 1981 ed.)
A. Barnes, W.J.Orville- Thomas, R. Gaufres, Achim Muller
R5,932 Discovery Miles 59 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The matrix isolation (MI) method has now been used for nearly thirty years. During this period it has been actively developed and the range of problems tackled greatly extended. Originally it was used for studies of transient species involv ing vibrational, electronic and ESR spectroscopy. Nowadays the study of transient species forms a comparatively small part of HI work since it has been amply demonstrated that very fruitful information can be obtained of the structure and interactions of stable molecules and their aggregates. In addition to the s ectroscopic methods mentioned above the MI technique is nowadays a standard method in research based on vibrational relaxation, luminescence, Mossbauer, magnetic circular dichroism, pulsed NMR and photoelectron spectroscopy. The matrix isolation technique affords considerable advantages over more conventional methods in most applications of spectroscopy. Areas where the technique has been widely applied, or shows great potential, include: metal atom chemistry, and its relation to surface chemistry, high temperature inorganic species, transition metal complexes, interstellar species, free radicals and unstable molecules, conformational studies, molecular com plexes, and intermolecular forces."

R4,574 Discovery Miles 45 740 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Coal Tar Distillation And Working Up Of Tar Products (Hardcover, illustrated edition): Arthur R. Warnes Coal Tar Distillation And Working Up Of Tar Products (Hardcover, illustrated edition)
Arthur R. Warnes
R774 Discovery Miles 7 740 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Originally published in 1913. PREFACE: CONSIDERING the importance of the coal tar industry at the present day, it is surprising how few practical text-books there are on this subject. I feel, therefore, that no apology is needed for offering to students, gasworks and tarworks managers and others interested in this industry, and in chemical technology, a short treatise dealing in a practical manner with the distillation of coal tar and the working up of its chief products. In order that this book could be produced at a moderate price it has been necessary to deal with the plant and processes used in the working up of the chief products obtained by the distillation of coal tar in a more or less brief manner. Special attention has been given to the plant used for, and the process of distillation of tar, as this portion of the industry is the most important, there being many works in which tar is submitted to distillation, or a partial distillation, for special purposes, and the distillates sold to other distillers for working up. As far as possible I have adhered to descriptions of plant and processes with which I have had a practical acquaintance, and I have drawn many of the illustrations in a diagrammatic form in order to render them more easily understood. With reference to the figures relating to change over points, temperatures used, amounts of distillates obtained and so on, those given have been employed in actual practice at one time or another, but theymust notbe taken as guides, as coaltar and coal tar distillates, etc., are liable to variation. My thanks are due to the firms of Messrs. Thos. Broadbent Sons, Ltd., S. H. Johnson Co., Ltd., and Robert Middleton, for their kindnessin lending me electros with which to illustrate Chapter xiv. Also to Mr.W. R. Ball for the great assistance he has given me in reading over much of the manuscript.
