Our current production-consumption system extracts raw materials from the earth, creates tangible products and after one or two uses, disposes of them in landfills. Recycle Everything; Why We Must, How We Can provides evidence of declining availability of raw materials from respected journals and organizations including the Department of Defense. The book explains how materials can be recycled in a system that retains and reuses them perpetually. In addition to parts suppliers, producers, distributors and consumers, there are new roles: collectors, disassemblers, used-parts brokers and materials processors. These new roles make it possible to recover, reprocess and reuse materials. Products are no longer sold and their materials lost; they are leased and tracked on their entire journey around the system from producer to consumer and back to producer. Finally, the book briefly describes the Institute for Material Sustainability and its role in helping industries transform themselves from linear systems dependent on extraction to systems that are self-sufficient and sustainable indefinitely into the future.
The last volume in the Davistown Museum Hand Tools in History series, the Registry of Maine Toolmakers documents toolmakers working in Maine from 1607-1900. It lists information about edge tool- and plane-makers who supplied tools for Maine's ship carpenters and timber harvesters, including blacksmiths who specialized in toolmaking, as well as toolmakers for other trades, such as cooper, carriage-maker, cobbler, and farrier. Essays explore the historical milieu of these toolmakers, discussing the toolkits of colonial settlers; 18th century New England's prosperous ironworking, planemaking, and shipbuilding industries; and Maine's vigorous 19th century edge toolmaking industry. The Registry offers an invaluable and unique resource for historians, tool buffs, and anyone interested in these important contributors to the industrial and maritime history of Maine and New England, many of whom have gone undocumented before the publication of this work.
In this volume of the Hand Tools in History series, author H. G. Skip Brack explores the stories told by the forge welded edge tools discovered in New England tool chests and workshops during his 40 years of searching out useful woodworking tools for the Liberty Tool Company in Maine. Also the founder and curator of the Davistown Museum, Brack wrote The Art of the Edge Tool to complement the museum collection, tell the story of early American toolmakers and answer the questions of when, how and where New England shipsmiths "ironed" wooden sailing ships and forged edge tools for the shipwrights. He explains the milieu of these toolmakers and links it to New England's maritime trading economy and the late 19th century florescence of American hand tool manufacturing and shipbuilding which followed. History buffs and anyone interested in woodworking tools, their history and the role they played in the evolution of America's maritime and industrial economy are sure to enjoy Brack's work.
The advent of rare-earth permanent magnets (REPMs) has brought the realization of novel magnetic structures that are not practicable otherwise. So different are these remarkable materials from the earlier magnets that conventional design wisdom is inadequate to fully exploit their unique characteristics. Indeed, the conventional wisdom can lead to error or to the employment of cumbersome procedures that are quite unnecessary for REPMs. The salutary characteristics stem from two basic attributes of the rare-earth materials: 1) large intrinsic moments per unit volume; 2) extraordinarily high resistance to demagnetization by external or internal demagnetization fields. Chapter titles are ...(1) Introduction ...(2) Magnetic Circuit Design [subsections are: Magnetic Analogue to Ohm's Law, Example of Magnetic Gap Field Calculations, Flux Confinement by Cladding, Clad Permanent Magnet Solenoids] ...(3) Linear Structures Composed Entirely of Rigid Permanent Magnets ...(4) Flux Confinement to Polygonal Cavities ...(5) Rod Ensembles ...(6) Three Dimensional Structures ...(7) Structural Simplification with Magnetic Mirrors ...(8) Periodic Permanent Magnet Stacks - PPM's [subsections are: Travelling Wave Tubes, Wigglers and Undulators, Twister Structures] ...(9) Conclusions, References, and Bibliography.

The course Metal Process Engineering is intended for engineers as a basis for the successful mastery of a number of special subjects. An acquaintance with the methods employed to produce ferrous and non-ferrous metals and their alloys, and a knowledge of their principal properties and processing procedures are of vital importance for expedient selection and proper application of metallic materials. Engineers in all lines of industry must know what effect heat treatment and other processes have on the properties of metals and what can be done to alter these properties in the desired directions. This is an English translation of a textbook originally published in the Soviet Union.
Originally published in the Soviet Union, this gives a very different view of the subject. Section headings are: Transformations in Steel During its Heat-Treatment, Elements of the Process of Heat-Treating, Heat-Treating Processes, and Heat-Treatment of Cast Irons and Non-Ferrous Alloys.
In an unscientific era when maps were rarities, how did ancient Romans envisage their far flung empire? This was done by various means for certain, including with the aid of an ingenious type of portable sundial that has barely attracted notice. As the Romans understood before the first century BCE, to track the passage of the sun across the sky hour-by-hour one needed to know one's latitude and the time of year, and that, furthermore, sundials did not have to be fixed objects. These portable instruments, crafted in bronze, were adjustable for the changes of latitude to be expected on long journeys-say, for instance, from Britain to Spain, or from Alexandria to Rome, or even on a Mediterranean tour. For convenient reference, these sundials incorporated lists of twenty to thirty names of cities or regions, each with its specific latitude. One of the insights of Roman Portable Sundials is that the choice of locations offers unique clues to the mental world-map and self-identity of individuals able to visualize Rome's vast empire latitudinally. The sixteen such sundials known to date share common features but designers also vied to create enhancements. Comparison with modern calculations shows that often the latitudes listed are incorrect, in which case the sundial may not perform at its best. But then the nature of Romans' time-consciousness (or lack of it) must be taken into consideration. Richard Talbert suspects that owners might prize these sundials not so much for practical use but rather as prestige objects attesting to scientific awareness as well as imperial mastery of time and space. In retrospect, they may be seen as Roman precursors to comparable Islamic and European instruments from the Middle Ages onwards, and even to today's luxury watches which display eye-catching proof of their purchasers' wealth, sophistication, and cosmopolitanism. Richly enhanced with detailed photographs, line drawings, maps, a gazetteer, and a table of latitudes and locations, Roman Portable Sundials brings these overlooked gadgets out of the shadows at last to reveal their hitherto untapped layers of meaning.
