Computational Fluid Dynamics for Engineers and Scientists (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Sreenivas Jayanti Computational Fluid Dynamics for Engineers and Scientists (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Sreenivas Jayanti
R2,731 Discovery Miles 27 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book offers a practical, application-oriented introduction to computational fluid dynamics (CFD), with a focus on the concepts and principles encountered when using CFD in industry. Presuming no more knowledge than college-level understanding of the core subjects, the book puts together all the necessary topics to give the reader a comprehensive introduction to CFD. It includes discussion of the derivation of equations, grid generation and solution algorithms for compressible, incompressible and hypersonic flows. The final two chapters of the book are intended for the more advanced user. In the penultimate chapter, the special difficulties that arise while solving practical problems are addressed. Distinction is made between complications arising out of geometrical complexity and those arising out of the complexity of the physics (and chemistry) of the problem. The last chapter contains a brief discussion of what can be considered as the Holy Grail of CFD, namely, finding the optimal design of a fluid flow component. A number of problems are given at the end of each chapter to reinforce the concepts and ideas discussed in that chapter. CFD has come of age and is widely used in industry as well as in academia as an analytical tool to investigate a wide range of fluid flow problems. This book is written for two groups: for those students who are encountering CFD for the first time in the form of a taught lecture course, and for those practising engineers and scientists who are already using CFD as an analysis tool in their professions but would like to deepen and broaden their understanding of the subject.

Transient Effects in Simulations of Hybrid Electric Drivetrains (Paperback, 1st ed. 2019): Florian Winke Transient Effects in Simulations of Hybrid Electric Drivetrains (Paperback, 1st ed. 2019)
Florian Winke
R1,689 Discovery Miles 16 890 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This work presents an investigation of the influence of different modeling approaches on the quality of fuel economy simulations of hybrid electric powertrains. The main focus is on the challenge to accurately include transient effects and reduce the computation time of complex models. Methods for the composition of entire powertrain models are analyzed as well as the modeling of the individual components internal combustion engine and battery. The results shall help with the selection of suitable models for specific simulation tasks and provide a deeper understanding of the dynamic processes within simulations of hybrid electric vehicles. About the Author Florian Winke was research associate at the Research Institute of Automotive Engineering and Vehicle Engines Stuttgart (FKFS), where he worked on modeling and simulation of hybrid electric powertrains. After finishing his doctorate, he joined a German automotive manufacturer, where he is working in software development in the field of hybrid operation strategies.

Waves and Compressible Flow (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 2nd ed. 2016): Hilary Ockendon, John R. Ockendon Waves and Compressible Flow (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 2nd ed. 2016)
Hilary Ockendon, John R. Ockendon
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Now in its second edition, this book continues to give readers a broad mathematical basis for modelling and understanding the wide range of wave phenomena encountered in modern applications. New and expanded material includes topics such as elastoplastic waves and waves in plasmas, as well as new exercises. Comprehensive collections of models are used to illustrate the underpinning mathematical methodologies, which include the basic ideas of the relevant partial differential equations, characteristics, ray theory, asymptotic analysis, dispersion, shock waves, and weak solutions. Although the main focus is on compressible fluid flow, the authors show how intimately gasdynamic waves are related to wave phenomena in many other areas of physical science. Special emphasis is placed on the development of physical intuition to supplement and reinforce analytical thinking. Each chapter includes a complete set of carefully prepared exercises, making this a suitable textbook for students in applied mathematics, engineering, and other physical sciences. Reviews of the first edition: "This book ... is an introduction to the theory of linear and nonlinear waves in fluids, including the theory of shock waves. ... is extraordinarily accurate and free of misprints ... . I enjoyed reading this book. ... most attractive and enticing appearance, and I'm certain that many readers who browse through it will wish to buy a copy. The exercises ... are excellent. ... A beginner who worked through these exercises would not only enjoy himself or herself, but would rapidly acquire mastery of techniques used...in JFM and many other journals..." (C. J. Chapman, Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Vol. 521, 2004) "The book targets a readership of final year undergraduates and first year graduates in applied mathematics. In the reviewer's opinion, it is very well designed to catch the student's interest ... while every chapter displays essential features in some important area of fluid dynamics. Additionally, students may practice by solving 91 exercises. This volume is mainly devoted to inviscid flows. ... The book is very well written." (Denis Serre, Mathematical Reviews, 2004)

Convection in Ferro-Nanofluids: Experiments and Theory - Physical Mechanisms, Flow Patterns, and Heat Transfer (Paperback,... Convection in Ferro-Nanofluids: Experiments and Theory - Physical Mechanisms, Flow Patterns, and Heat Transfer (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2018)
Aleksandra A. Bozhko, Sergey A. Suslov
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book covers the experimental and theoretical study of convection in non-isothermal ferro-nanofluids (FNFs). Since FNFs are not transparent and magnetic fields are very sensitive to the shape of the boundary between magnetic and nonmagnetic media, special flow visualization techniques based on the use of thermo-sensitive liquid crystal films, infrared cameras, as well as local and integral temperature sensors are discussed in the book. This book considers several major configurations of convective chambers and the applied magnetic field. For each of them, the stability boundaries are determined theoretically and experimentally. The physical types of dominant instabilities and the characteristics of their interactions are subsequently established using linear and weakly non-linear hydrodynamic stability analyses and elements of bifurcation theory. The book also discusses the potential of using magnetically controlled ferro-nanofluids as a heat carrier in situations where heat removal by natural convection is not possible due to the lack of gravity (orbital stations) or extreme confinement (microelectronics). Researchers and practitioners working in the areas of fluid mechanics, hydrodynamic stability, and heat and mass transfer will benefit from this book.

Incompressible Flow & the Finite Element Method - Isothermal Laminar Flow V 2 (Paperback, V02): P.M. Gresho Incompressible Flow & the Finite Element Method - Isothermal Laminar Flow V 2 (Paperback, V02)
P.M. Gresho
R3,668 Discovery Miles 36 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This comprehensive two volume reference work is devoted to the important details regarding the application of the finite element method to incompressible flows, addressing the theoretical background and the detailed development of appropriate numerical methods applied to their solution. Volume One provides extensive coverage of the prototypical fluid mechanics equation: the advection-diffusion equation. In addition, for both this equation and the equations of principal interest - the Navier-Stokes equations - (covered in detail in Volume Two), a discussion of both the continuous and discrete equations is presented. Also addressed are explanations of how to properly march the time-dependent equations using smart implicit methods. Boundary and initial conditions, so important in applications, are thoroughly described and discussed, including well-posedness. The important role played by the pressure, so confusing in the past, is carefully explained. Together, this two volume work explains and emphasizes consistency in six areas:
* consistent mass matrix
* consistent pressure Poisson equation
* consistent penalty methods
* consistent normal direction
* consistent heat flux
* consistent forces
Fully indexed and referenced, these two volumes form an essential reference tool for all research students and applied scientists in incompressible fluid mechanics.

Intermediate Offshore Foundations (Paperback): Steve, Kay, Susan Gourvenec, Elisabeth Palix, Etienne Alderlieste Intermediate Offshore Foundations (Paperback)
Steve, Kay, Susan Gourvenec, Elisabeth Palix, Etienne Alderlieste
R1,398 Discovery Miles 13 980 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Intermediate foundations are used as anchors for floating platforms and ancillary structures, foundations for steel jackets, and to support seafloor equipment and offshore wind turbines. When installed by suction, they are an economical alternative to piling, and also may be completely removed. They are usually circular in plan and are essentially rigid when laterally loaded. Length to diameter embedment ratios, L/D, generally vary between 0.5 and 10, spanning the gap between shallow and deep foundations, although these are indicative boundaries and the response, rather than the embedment ratio, defines an intermediate foundation. The first chapters introduce foundation types; compare shallow, intermediate and deep foundation models and design; define unique design issues that make intermediate foundations distinct from shallow and deep foundations, as well as list their hazards that mainly occur during installation. Later chapters cover installation, in-place resistance and in-place response, and miscellaneous design considerations. There is no general agreement as to which design methods/models are appropriate, so models should only be as accurate as the data. Therefore, several reasonably accurate models are provided together with comprehensive discussion and advice. Example calculations and over 200 references are also included. This is the first book dedicated to the geotechnical design of intermediate foundations, and it will appeal to professional engineers specialising in the offshore industry.

Buoyancy-Driven Flow in Fluid-Saturated Porous Media near a Bounding Surface (Paperback, 1st ed. 2018): Hitoshi Sakamoto,... Buoyancy-Driven Flow in Fluid-Saturated Porous Media near a Bounding Surface (Paperback, 1st ed. 2018)
Hitoshi Sakamoto, Francis A. Kulacki
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This Brief reports on heat transfer from a solid boundary in a saturated porous medium. Experiments reveal overall heat transfer laws when the flow along the wall is driven by buoyancy produced by large temperature differences, and mathematical analysis using advanced volume-averaging techniques produce estimates of how heat is dispersed in the porous zone. Engineers, hydrologists and geophysicists will find the results valuable for validation of laboratory and field tests, as well as testing their models of dispersion of heat and mass in saturated media.

Hydrodynamic Propulsion and Its Optimization - Analytic Theory (Hardcover, 1995 ed.): J.A. Sparenberg Hydrodynamic Propulsion and Its Optimization - Analytic Theory (Hardcover, 1995 ed.)
J.A. Sparenberg
R5,353 Discovery Miles 53 530 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

HYDRODYNAMIC PROPULSION AND ITS OPTIMIZATION ANALYTIC THEORY Hydrodynamic propulsion has been of major interest ever since craft took to the water. In the course of time, many attempts have been made to invent, develop, or to improve hydrodynamic propulsion devices. Remarkable achievements in this field were made essentially by experienced individuals, who were in need of reliable propulsion units such as paddle wheels, sculling devices, screw propellers, and of course, sails. The problem of minimizing the amount of input energy for a prescribed effective output was first investigated seriously at the beginning of this century. In 1919, BETZ presented a paper on air-screw propellers with minimum consumption of energy which could be applied to ship-screw propellers also. Next, attempts were made to optimize hydrodynamic propulsion units. Ensuing investigations concerned the optimization of the hydrodynamic system: ship-propeller. The first simple theory of ship propulsion which was presented considered more or less only thrust augmentation, wake processing and modification of propeller characteristics when operating behind the ships hull. This theory has been little improved meanwhile and is still useful, particularly with regard to practical ship design and for evaluating results of ship model tests. However, this theory is not adequate for optimization procedures necessary for high-technology propulsion, particularly for ship propellers utilizing propulsion improving devices such as tip end plates or tip fins at the propeller blades, spoilers in front of the propeller, asymmetrical stern etc.

Tree-Shaped Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer (Paperback, 1st ed. 2018): Antonio F. Miguel, Luiz A.O. Rocha Tree-Shaped Fluid Flow and Heat Transfer (Paperback, 1st ed. 2018)
Antonio F. Miguel, Luiz A.O. Rocha
R1,359 Discovery Miles 13 590 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book provides the first comprehensive state-of-the-art research on tree (dendritic) fluid flow and heat transfer. It covers theory, numerical simulations and applications. It can serve as extra reading for graduate-level courses in engineering and biotechnology. Tree flow networks, also known as dendritic flow networks, are ubiquitous in nature and engineering applications. Tree-shaped design is prevalent when the tendency of the flow (fluid, energy, matter and information) is to move more easily between a volume (or area) and a point, and vice versa. From the geophysical trees to animals and plants, we can observe numerous systems that exhibit tree architectures: river basins and deltas, lungs, circulatory systems, kidneys, vascularized tissues, roots, stems, and leaves, among others. Tree design is also prevalent in man-made flow systems, both in macro- and microfluidic devices. A vast array of tree-shaped design is available and still emerging in chemical engineering, electronics cooling, bioengineering, chemical and bioreactors, lab-on-a-chip systems, and smart materials with volumetric functionalities, such as self-healing and self-cooling. This book also addresses the basic design patterns and solutions for cooling bodies where there is heat generation. Several shapes of fin as well as assemblies of fins are addressed. An up-to-date review of cavities, i.e., inverted or negative fins, for facilitating the flow of heat is also presented. Heat trees using high thermal conductivity material can be used in the cooling of heat-generating bodies, and can also be applied to the cooling of electronics.

Basics of Aerothermodynamics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 2nd ed. 2015): Ernst Heinrich Hirschel Basics of Aerothermodynamics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 2nd ed. 2015)
Ernst Heinrich Hirschel
R5,880 Discovery Miles 58 800 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This successful book gives an introduction to the basics of aerothermodynamics, as applied in particular to winged re-entry vehicles and airbreathing hypersonic cruise and acceleration vehicles. The book gives a review of the issues of transport of momentum, energy and mass, real-gas effects as well as inviscid and viscous flow phenomena. In this second, revised edition the chapters with the classical topics of aerothermodynamics more or less were left untouched. The access to some single topics of practical interest was improved. Auxiliary chapters were put into an appendix. The recent successful flights of the X-43A and the X-51A indicate that the dawn of sustained airbreathing hypersonic flight now has arrived. This proves that the original approach of the book to put emphasis on viscous effects and the aerothermodynamics of radiation-cooled vehicle surfaces was timely. This second, revised edition even more accentuates these topics. A new, additional chapter treats examples of viscous thermal surface effects. Partly only very recently obtained experimental and numerical results show the complexity of such phenomena (dependence of boundary-layer stability, skin friction, boundary-layer thicknesses, and separation on the thermal state of the surface) and their importance for airbreathing hypersonic flight vehicles, but also for any other kind of hypersonic vehicle.

Piet-Christof Woelcken, Michael Papadopoulos
R7,940 Discovery Miles 79 400 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The book includes the research papers presented in the final conference of the EU funded SARISTU (Smart Intelligent Aircraft Structures) project, held at Moscow, Russia between 19-21 of May 2015. The SARISTU project, which was launched in September 2011, developed and tested a variety of individual applications as well as their combinations. With a strong focus on actual physical integration and subsequent material and structural testing, SARISTU has been responsible for important progress on the route to industrialization of structure integrated functionalities such as Conformal Morphing, Structural Health Monitoring and Nanocomposites. The gap- and edge-free deformation of aerodynamic surfaces known as conformal morphing has gained previously unrealized capabilities such as inherent de-icing, erosion protection and lightning strike protection, while at the same time the technological risk has been greatly reduced. Individual structural health monitoring techniques can now be applied at the part-manufacturing level rather than via extending an aircraft's time in the final assembly line. And nanocomposites no longer lose their improved properties when trying to upscale from neat resin testing to full laminate testing at element level. As such, this book familiarizes the reader with the most significant develo pments, achievements and key technological steps which have been made possible through the four-year long cooperation of 64 leading entities from 16 different countries with the financial support of the European Commission.

The book encompasses novel CFD techniques to compute offshore wind and tidal applications. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques are regarded as the main design tool to explore the new engineering challenges presented by offshore wind and tidal turbines for energy generation. The difficulty and costs of undertaking experimental tests in offshore environments have increased the interest in the field of CFD which is used to design appropriate turbines and blades, understand fluid flow physical phenomena associated with offshore environments, predict power production or characterise offshore environments, amongst other topics.

The book reports on advanced solutions to the problem of simulating wing and nacelle stall, as presented and discussed by internationally recognized researchers at the Closing Symposium of the DFG Research Unit FOR 1066. Reliable simulations of flow separation on airfoils, wings and powered engine nacelles at high Reynolds numbers represent great challenges in defining suitable mathematical models, computing numerically accurate solutions and providing comprehensive experimental data for the validation of numerical simulations. Additional problems arise from the need to consider airframe-engine interactions and inhomogeneous onset flow conditions, as real aircraft operate in atmospheric environments with often-large distortions. The findings of fundamental and applied research into these and other related issues are reported in detail in this book, which targets all readers, academics and professionals alike, interested in the development of advanced computational fluid dynamics modeling for the simulation of complex aircraft flows with flow separation.
