"I will build a car for the great multitude. It will be large
enough for the family, but small enough for the individual to run
and take care of. It will be constructed of the best materials, by
the best men to be hired, after the simplest designs that modern
engineering can devise. But it will be so low in price that no man
making a good salary will be unable to own one-and enjoy with his
family the blessings of hours of pleasure in God's great open
spaces."-Henry Ford First rolled out in 1908 with an $850 price
tag, the Model T Ford was the nation's first mass-produced,
affordable, and versatile motor vehicle. It made Americans mobile
as never before, spurred a revolution in manufacturing methods, and
marked a sea change in automotive design and engineering.
Originally written for the centennial celebration of the Model T,
Robert Casey captures the remarkable story of that car's history
and development and of its long-lasting impact on America. Here are
the people who built the Model T and how, the folks who purchased
it and why, and the profound technological leaps in mass production
and mass consumption that we rightly associate with Ford's
automobile. Casey discusses how the car was designed, built, sold,
and driven, as well as how owners tinkered with it. He describes
the experience of driving a Model T and explains how a few
engineering innovations-a one-piece cylinder block with detachable
cylinder head, a clever flexible suspension system, the use of
lightweight vanadium alloy steel-led to the car's reliability and
popularity and spurred innovations across the motor vehicle
industry. Richly illustrated with archival photos from The Henry
Ford, The Model T is the definitive history of an iconographic
piece of American technology.
Born in Shropshire soon after the end of the First World War,
venerable motoring writer W de Forte has driven everything from his
grandfather's first Daimler, to modern-day supercars ...ridden
everything from vertiginous Victorian penny farthings, to high
velocity twenty-first century superbikes ...travelled everywhere
from the permafrost of the Arctic Circle to the baking sands of the
Baja Peninsula ...and met everyone from Tazio Nuvolari to Valentino
Rossi.W de Forte enjoyed an eventful career as a top-level
journalist, spanning 75 years, during which time he tested many
thousands of cars and reported on countless automotive events
around the world. This made him uniquely qualified to comment on
all aspects of classic and vintage motoring and
motorcycling.Relatively undimmed by age and ague, even in his
mid-90s, de Forte had no plans to retire, but, in early 2011, a
high-speed prang while testing a wayward Rudge Ulster at a racing
circuit in Belgium brought him up with a jolt, both literally and
metaphorically. After recuperating in hospital, he settled down to
write his long-awaited and much requested autobiography. This unique
and insightful book is the result.Packed with fascinating stories
about classic cars and motorcycles, A Life Awheel - the 'Auto'
Biography of W de Forte is an account of an extraordinary motoring
life, and the story of motoring in the 20th century.

ultra-dependable VW Beetle chassis and running gear. The cars were

THE essential guide to these curvy and collectible Karmann Ghia
Volkswagens.
The 190 (W 201) was a landmark car for Mercedes-Benz: the
predecessor to today's C-Class models, it was the company's first
compact saloon (sedan) and combined advanced engineering with a new
direction in body styling, later followed by the W124 and R129
series. Engines available included robust petrol and diesel
`fours', as well as a silky `straight-six'. The sporting 190 E
2.3-16 and 2.5-16 models, initially developed with Cosworth, took
Mercedes to new levels of performance. Altogether, nearly 1.9
million cars were produced, and today the 190 is an increasingly
sought-after modern classic. This guide will help you learn about
the differences between models, and what to look for when buying.
What are the true running costs, and what issues - with the
mechanicals, body or interior - should you be wary of? Is a
restoration worth considering? This handy guide will take you
step-by-step through the process of finding and evaluating a good
190 and making a successful purchase. Essential data and
information about clubs and specialists will help you look after
and enjoy your 190.
Here is a new edition of Clausager's classic book Original MG T
Series, first published in 1989 and never out of print since. For
this edition fresh in-depth photography of all models from TA of
1936 to TF of 1954 has been commissioned, the text has been
thoroughly overhauled to incorporate new knowledge, and chapters
have been added on pre-T Series MG Midgets and on coachbuilt and
special-bodied cars. The MG T Series, and in particular the TC
model of 1945-49, represent the treasured archetype of the British
sports car - instantly recognisable and as popular today as they
have consistently been throughout the decades.
Inspired by the success of the Ford Mustang "pony car" in the USA,
Ford UK launched the Capri - "The Car You Always Promised Yourself"
in 1969 and it was an instant hit, with its long bonnet, sleek 2+2
coupe body, and low stance. For 1974 Ford launched the Capri II,
with a new smooth body style, engines ranging from 1300 to 3000cc,
and a plush Ghia version of the 3-litre model. In 1978 came the
Capri Mk3 with yet more refinement and a four-headlamp nose. These
classic Fords now have an almost fanatical following, supported by
some very active owner's clubs. Good examples are eagerly sought,
and with prices rising restoration has become a very viable
proposition. An astonishing number of variants of the Capri Mk2 and
Mk3 were offered, so they really need to be identified. This book,
companion to our 2017 title Factory-Original Ford Capri Mk I, does
the job, taking the reader right through the production period and
pinning down the correct factory specifications, equipment and
finishes across the range. This information is backed up by nearly
300 specially commissioned colour photographs of outstanding
examples of the cars.
Sir William Lyons enjoyed a seemingly unstoppable rise to fame and
fortune in the motor industry, and the Jaguar brand which he
introduced became world-famous. Yet it did not happen overnight. In
the 1920s he was in Blackpool, styling motorcycle sidecars, in the
1930s he was in Coventry developing the SS motor car, and the
stand-alone Jaguar company did not appear until 1945. Until 1972,
when he retired from business, Sir William was the mainstream, the
chairman, the chief stylist, and the inspiration of all things
Jaguar.
Helped along by the amazing new XK engine of 1948, by motor racing
success at Le Mans, and by the stunning style of cars like the
XK120, the Mk 2 saloons and the extraordinary E-Type, Jaguar soon
became world-famous. Along the way the company absorbed Daimler and
Coventry-Climax, then merged voluntarily with BMC in 1966, and
returned to Le Mans racing with great success in the 1980s.
Although the company was later commercially buffeted by its
involvement with British Leyland, with Ford and latterly with Land
Rover, and finally the Indian conglomerate Tata which now controls
the business, the company's products have always been stunning.
Sports coupes which reach well beyond 150mph, sleek executive
saloons with unbeatable styling, and the promise of much innovation
in the next few years make this a story whose climax is yet to
come.

An extraordinary account of the impending closure of the Holden
factory in Adelaide. More than the end of a business - it's the end
of an era, of a story, and of a great Australian dream. When Holden
signalled that it would close its Adelaide factory, it struck at
the very heart of Australian identity. Holden is our car made on
our shores. It's the choice of patriotic rev heads and suburban
drivers alike. How could a car that was so beloved - and so popular
- be so unprofitable to make? The story of the collapse of Holden
is about the people who make and drive the cars; it's about
sustaining industry in Australia; it's about communities of workers
and what happens when the work dries up. And if it's not quite
about the death of an icon - because Holdens will remain on
Australian roads for a long time to come - then it's about what
happens when an icon falls to its knees in front of a whole nation.
This updated edition features a new chapter. 'Brilliant and

If you are aspiring to build a racing car, How to Build
Motorcycle-engined Racing Cars could be the book that you've been
waiting for! Tony Pashley revisits the path that he took in the
Pashley Project articles in Race Tech magazine during the design
and construction of two successful hillclimb cars, but this time in
great detail, with a view to enabling the reader to carry out a
similar exercise for themselves. Although hillclimb and sprint cars
are the focal topic, a lot of the book is applicable to race cars
in general. The cars under discussion in the book are powered by
motorcycle engines, which are meeting with great success in the
smaller racing car classes. The total process of building a car is
described, beginning with the selection and procurement of the
engine. Chassis and suspension design is covered in a simplistic
but adequate manner as the author's aim is to minimize the
inclusion of involved calculations. Two recipes for chassis
construction are illustrated in detail, along with guidance on the
processes of construction and a description of the required
equipment. Following on from this, the fabrication of the
suspension is explained. Further chapters are dedicated to the
remaining aspects of the vehicle, covering transmission, brakes,
fuel and coolant systems, and electrics. The book is heavily
illustrated with 200 photographs and extensive explanatory diagrams
and tables. It is a vital addition to any would-be kit car
builder's library.

Office, introducing a cast of memorable characters, many of whom
are speaking out for the first time. Once Upon a Car is a uniquely
American tale of success, failure, and redemption, chronicling a

unfolding--a story no one is more qualified to tell than Bill
Vlasic.
