The causes for the devastating condition of arthritis have become one of modern medicine's greatest mysteries. Furthermore, a potential cure for arthritis has become just as elusive. As a result, modern medicine has focused on treating the symptoms rather than the disease. Here Dr. Adams uses a combination of modern research and traditional medicine to expose the evidence that unveils the root causes and solutions to both the symptoms and the diseases classified as arthritis.

"I expect this book to be excellent and timely." Professor R. McNeill Alexander FRS, School of Biology, University of Leeds, UK
The term Spondylarthitides refers to a group of common rheumatic
disorders affecting the spine and peripheral joints. The
distribution of this disease is world-wide, with both men and women
affected (the average age of onset being below 30 years). These
also serve as a model system for understanding the interaction
between disease-inducing micro-organisms, and
genetically-susceptible host, since both of these components are
particularly well defined in the spondylarthopathies. They are
therefore of great interest from the point of veiw of understanding
the pathogenesis of inflammatory and autoimune diseases, such as
arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and insulin dependent
diabetes mellitus, all of which involve an interplay of microbial
and genetic factors. The Spondylarthritides provides up to date, in
depth reviews of the current state of knowledge of the genetic,
epidemiologic, microbiologic, and immunologic aspects of these
disorders.
This work examines current issues in the understanding of the causes and management of rheumatic disease.
The proceedings of the fourth Canadian conference on research in the rheumatic diseases held in Toronto in October 1970, this volume includes some 50 papers based on recent research carried out in Canada, the US, and abroad. The papers centre on two main themes: immunological aspects of the rheumatic diseases, and animal and experimental model diseases which have certain features in common with human rheumatic disorders.
This publication is derived from the proceedings of the Third Canadian Conference on Research in the Rheumatic Diseases, sponsored jointly by the Canadian Rheumatism Association (the professional organization) and The Canadian Arthritis and Rheumatism Society (the voluntary association). Like the previous conferences on Research in Rheumatic Diseases held in 1955 and 1960, this gathering served as a meeting ground for the exchange of information and the re-examination of the correlations suggested by the observations gathered and arranged by investigators using differing tools and hypothetical methods.
Systemic and nervous system vasculitides are a heterogeneous group of related disorders, each characterized by vascular inflammation such that they have the potential to cause serious morbidity and mortality if unrecognized and therefore untreated. Systemic vasculitis affect all populations and every nationality and walk-of-life, from childhood to older age. The first edition of The Vasculitides, published in 2014, met the urgent need for a clear, concise, and reliable textbook regarding the epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, laboratory evaluation and management of these disorders, assembling participants of the 16th International Vasculitis and ANCA Workshop in Paris, France. Five years later, two subsequent meetings have taken place in London and Tokyo. Participants of the 19th International Vasculitis & ANCA Workshop will gather in April 2019 at the University of Pennsylvania for an exceptional venue to share translational scientific discoveries, data from clinical trials, and advances in the clinical assessment, pathophysiology, genetic biomarkers, standard-of-care, and novel therapies of vasculitis. The Workshop participants regathered to update the The Vasculitides, producing an even more cutting-edge two-volume set of books. This is the first book in the set, covering general considerations and systemic vasculitis.

In Rheumatoid Arthritis: Risk Factors, Health Effects and Treatment Options, the authors open by discussing discuss which bDMARDS and tsDMARDS might be preferred in particular situations, for example in the setting of previous malignancy or in those with an increased risk of infection. Emphasis will be placed on practical solutions for the busy clinician. Following this, they discuss the prevalence and implications of co-morbid depression in RA patients and sub-groups, focusing on ethnic minorities. The barriers to identification of depression and the reasons for low utilization of mental health care resources among specific ethnic groups are analyzed, taking into account patient perceptions of depression and its association with RA. Lastly, the current knowledge about the contribution of smoking as a risk factor for RA development and the possible mechanism of action is reviewed. In addition, the authors highlight the association of smoking habits with clinical, serological, radiographic damage statuses and comorbidities of RA. The benefits of designed smoking cessation intervention on RA outcomes will also be discussed. |
