Event Evaluation: - Theory and methods for event management and tourism (Paperback): Donald Getz Event Evaluation: - Theory and methods for event management and tourism (Paperback)
Donald Getz
R1,125 Discovery Miles 11 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the first textbook and reference work on evaluation intended for event management and event tourism. Drawing upon generic evaluation theory and methods, event and tourism research and real-world experiences, the author provides concepts and tools needed for the establishment of a comprehensive evaluation system and the implementation of varied evaluation projects. The strength of this book lies in its emphasis on evaluation foundations, both theoretical and methodological, enabling the student and practitioner to adapt the evaluation process to many situations using: *A range of tools from simple checklists to more advanced logic models; *Specific chapters devoted to the most challenging evaluation contexts: the visitor and their experience, quality and human resources; *A chapter devoted to exploring different evaluation challenges in the full range of planned events, including the tourism dimension; *An introduction of impact assessment. The Events Management Theory and Methods Series examines the extent to which mainstream theory is being employed to develop event-specific theory, and to influence the very core practices of event management and event tourism. Each compact volume contains overviews of mainstream management theories and methods, examples from the events literature, case studies, and guidance on all aspects of planned-event management. They introduce the theory, show how it is being used in the events sector through a literature review, incorporate examples and case studies written by researchers and/or practitioners, and contain methods that can be used effectively in the real world. Series editor: Donald Getz. With online resource material, this mix-and-match collection is ideal for lecturers who need theoretical foundations and case studies for their classes, by students in need of reference works, by professionals wanting increased understanding alongside practical methods, and by agencies or associations that want their members and stakeholders to have access to a library of valuable resources.

Focus On Festivals - Contemporary European case studies and perspectives (Paperback): Chris Newbold, Christopher Maughan,... Focus On Festivals - Contemporary European case studies and perspectives (Paperback)
Chris Newbold, Christopher Maughan, Jennie Jordan, Bianchini Franco
R1,150 Discovery Miles 11 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book presents a contemporary overview of our most ubiquitous cultural phenomena - festivals. It is able to do so by taking a powerful and unique case-study focused, theoretically rigorous and pan-European approach. It comes from a hugely expert and experienced team of editors and authors drawn from across Europe and is based on the groundbreaking work of the European Festival Research Project (EFRP). The EFRP and the book are focused on understanding the causes and implications of the current growth in festivals internationally, and the implications this has across major sectors ranging from tourism to culture. The key themes the books brings out are: *The politics, programming, impacts, governance and management of festivals; *The social, cultural, political, economic and physical contexts in which festivals operate; *The potential of festivals to explore and stimulate a more risk-oriented approach to the arts; *Key conclusions, trends, forecasts and recommendations for the sector in the future. The exciting range of real world examples and the mix of practical and academic contributions provides readers with a broad perspective across agendas from economic regeneration and tourism, to education and social inclusion. An indispensable text for students in arts and festival management, events, tourism, hospitality and cultural policy and management courses. It is also essential reading for festival and events managers, public authorities and existing and potential sponsors.

Strategic Event Creation (Hardcover): Liz Sharples, Philip Crowther, Daryl May, Chiara Orefice Strategic Event Creation (Hardcover)
Liz Sharples, Philip Crowther, Daryl May, Chiara Orefice
R3,153 Discovery Miles 31 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Changes in the wider environment have triggered a new normal for event creation. Heightened attendee expectations, a keener focus upon the return required by funders and wider stakeholders, and, of course, an ever more competitive event marketplace. Couple these with CSR, social media, globalisation and technology and the reasons event creation is now a strategic and multilayered responsibility are clear. Strategic Event Creation is the contemporary textbook that recognises and articulates this changed reality for students and professionals. It moves away from an older paradigm of simply 'making events work' and managing inputs to show a sector that now needs to be: outcome obsessed, stakeholder centric, strategically focused and driven by strategically aware reflective professionals. This text is based on a carefully designed framework which- * Delivers a clear overview of the key principles * Integrates theory with industry voices, cases and the practitioner perspective * Uses the lens of outcomes to anchor the role of inputs/processes/decisions/budgets * Delivers clear learning summaries and highlights key questions for reflection The broadly based and experienced author team are widely engaged with the events industry whose voice and insights inform the book throughout. It is designed to move students and professionals beyond event organising to strategic event creation. As the event industry has progressed effective event operations become a prerequisite to exist rather than a recipe to succeed. It will be an essential text for students studying Events, Festival, Conference and Exhibition Management at all levels, and also of significant use to a wide range of students in Tourism, Hospitality and Marketing. The practical 'real world' perspective means that it can help venue managers, event creators (across many areas), experiential marketing professionals and conference / training managers gain a broader understanding of the business context in which they are competing.

Gender and Private Security in Global Politics (Hardcover): Maya Eichler Gender and Private Security in Global Politics (Hardcover)
Maya Eichler
R3,575 Discovery Miles 35 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

For two hundred years the provision of military security has been a central and defining function of the modern nation-state. The increasing reliance on private military and security companies in contemporary conflict marks a fundamental transformation in the organization of military violence, and it raises issues of accountability and ethics that are of particular concern to feminists. This privatization of force not only enables states to circumvent citizens' democratic control over questions of war and peace, but also undermines women's and minority groups' claims for greater inclusion in the military sphere. Gender and Private Security in Global Politics brings together key scholars from the fields of international relations, security studies, and gender studies to argue that privatization of military security is a deeply gendered process. The chapters employ a variety of feminist perspectives, including critical, postcolonial, poststructuralist, and queer feminist perspectives, as well as a wide range of methodological approaches including ethnography, participant-observation, genealogy, and discourse analysis. This is the first book to develop an extended feminist analysis of private militaries and to draw on feminist concerns regarding power, justice and equality to consider how to reform and regulate private forces.

Something for Everyone? - Changes and Choices in the Ethno-Party Scene in Urban Nightlife (Paperback): Simone Boogaarts Something for Everyone? - Changes and Choices in the Ethno-Party Scene in Urban Nightlife (Paperback)
Simone Boogaarts
R1,379 Discovery Miles 13 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The urban population is becoming increasingly diverse and growing (ethnic) diversity is having a singular effect on nightlife in Dutch cities. By studying the motivation behind and nightlife choices of the young people who participate in ethno-party scenes, Boogaarts-de Bruin investigates how the changing urban population affects the supply side of the nightlife market using an analytical model she has developed and which she calls the model of structured choice. This approach is sensitive to the flexible use of the processes of agency and structure due to the systematic distinction that it makes between societal and personal factors. Accordingly, it is revealed that in order to analyze and adequately explain the nightlife experiences of and choices made by ethnic youngsters, an integrated model is required which centralizes the interaction between the structural strategies of the producers on the one hand and the personal preferences and agency of the consumers on the other. What is more, this book demonstrates that nightlife has changed because of the increasing ethnic diversity of the Dutch population. Finally, in the epilogue, the fieldwork results are discussed in light of the currently heated debate regarding the integration processes of ethnic minority young people (in nightlife).

The Enforcers - Inside Cape Town's Deadly Nightclub Battles (Paperback): Caryn Dolley The Enforcers - Inside Cape Town's Deadly Nightclub Battles (Paperback)
Caryn Dolley 1
R295 R264 Discovery Miles 2 640 Save R31 (11%) In Stock

Here is the Cape Town underworld laid bare, explored through the characters who control the protection industry, the bouncers and security at nightclubs and strip clubs.

At the centre of this turf war is Nafiz Modack, the latest kingpin to have seized control of the industry, a man often in court on various charges, including extortion. Investigative journalist Caryn Dolley has followed Modack and his predecessors for six years as power has shifted in the nightclub security industry, and she focuses on how closely connected the criminal underworld is with the police services. In this suspenseful page turner of an investigation, she writes about the overlapping of the state with the underworld, the underworld with the upperworld, and how the associated violence is not confined to specific areas of Cape Town, but is happening inside hospitals, airports, clubs and restaurants and putting residents at risk.

A book that lays bare the myth that violence and gangsterism in Cape Town is confined to the ganglands of the Cape Flats, wherever you find yourself, you’re only a hair’s breadth away from the enforcers.

In this book are fifty-two compelling tales that will lead the reader on a journey of discovery of the African continent. It tracks the ancient grail of traditional African medicine or muthi. The journey takes one year, with one story for each of the fifty-two weeks. Many of the stories inherited through Africa’s compelling oral tradition are between these covers: committed to paper for the first time ever.

The ancient African people were the first aromatherapists who well understood the effect of plants on the human body, mind and soul. Innately spiritual, the thousands of lineages of African people across thousands of years have all used plant medicines for healing, always with the blessing of their ancestors.

Knowledge of African plant mythology and its associated healing practices is most certainly a grail because on this great continent we call Africa, knowledge has always been an oral tradition. Because it was never written down, thousands of years of healing wisdom and intelligence have been lost in the transference from one generation to the next.

This book endeavoures to bring to light the deep history of fifty-two of the thousands of indigenous medicinal plants of Africa, before it is too late. The focus is towards Southern Africa because this region is a hotspot of cultural and botanical diversity. Unlike the healing knowledge of other ancient cultures, such as India or China, little of Africa’s healing history is recorded.

As you read the stories about fifty-two of the continent’s prominent indigenous plant cures, the authors hope you, too, will experience some of the magnetism, mystery and wisdom of Africa. They hope it will help you understand a bit more about yourself and about our species: the human being.

One of the worst recessions for the past 100 years, businesses failing, a revolution in technology, increasing financial constraints, compliance stifling the ability to be nimble, changing consumer behaviour, and a market driving products towards commoditization - this is the perfect storm facing the banking industry. Disruption provides a critical understanding of the impact of the current economic crisis and the current industrial revolution on financial services, the new trends in the sector, and the opportunities for banks to leverage their unique assets and pre-empt challengers from gaining meaningful market share. The book also provides top-level advice about transforming financial services organizations by finding the right balance between short-term requirements and the imperative of long-term change. This balancing act is what the authors call the "ambidextrous approach", which requires focus on two strategic initiatives: performance and innovation.
