Service Franchising - A Global Perspective (Hardcover, 2006 ed.): Ilan Alon Service Franchising - A Global Perspective (Hardcover, 2006 ed.)
Ilan Alon
R2,802 Discovery Miles 28 020 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Service Franchising succinctly extracts from observations about international franchising from both the scholarly and trade literature. The work adds insights gleaned through extensive research and the experiences of the author. As a result, the book advances the body of knowledge on international franchising for the academic community. In addition to being a breakthrough text for researchers in business and economics the book also contains guidance for franchisors and franchisees in their efforts to achieve success in the global marketplace.

Ilan Alon has made major contributions to the understanding of franchising, both through his own research and his compiling and study of the work of other leading researchers. Alon pioneered research into the internationalization of franchising with his published studies from Asia, Europe, Latin America and other parts of the world.

France and the Grand Tour (Hardcover, 2003 ed.): J Black France and the Grand Tour (Hardcover, 2003 ed.)
J Black
R3,330 Discovery Miles 33 300 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In this innovative study of the Grand Tour, Black relies on archival sources to provide an exploration of the real tourist experience rather than, as for the majority of studies of the Grand Tour, an account that is essentially based on travel literature. While sensitive to wider cultural dimensions, the author demonstrates his interest in the experience of tourists, particularly the circumstances they encountered, and the impact of the Grand Tour on British Society.

R1,769 Discovery Miles 17 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book invokes the radical potentialities of 'untidiness' to envision alternative arrangements of social life and hospitality. Instead of trying to manage sustainability or tidy up tourist situations, the authors embrace the messiness of human relations and argue for more creative, embodied and ethical ontologies of tourism and mobility.

Katia Laura Sidali, Achim Spiller, Birgit Schulze
R4,019 Discovery Miles 40 190 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book will be a valuable source of information for those concerned with rural and farm tourism, sustainable tourism and the marketing of "Calibri">local gastronomy. It presents cases with an international and interdisciplinary approach in order to provideideas for strategic perspectives in tourism studies. Furthermore, for the first time the complex fields of rural and food tourism are examined from an international (Italy and Germany) viewpoint. This book explores ways in which gastronomical heritage (i.e., regional food, organic food) can be incorporated in rural tourism (above all farm tourism) and development policies as well as in new avenues of research e.g., sensory marketing, online marketing) in order to enhance sustainable practices both in the tourism and in the agri-food sector. Overall, the book presents an overview of benchmark practices for professionals (associations of rural tourism, farmers, etc.), while offering scholars a well-founded source to refer to in order to gain up-to-date insights into the state of the art of studies on rural and food tourism.

Cruising for Trouble - Cruise Ships as Soft Targets for Pirates, Terrorists, and Common Criminals (Hardcover): Mark Gaouette Cruising for Trouble - Cruise Ships as Soft Targets for Pirates, Terrorists, and Common Criminals (Hardcover)
Mark Gaouette
R2,079 Discovery Miles 20 790 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book offers an alarming inside look at the security preparations of the cruise industry and the potential for cruise ships to be the target for pirates, terrorists, and criminal activity. Cruising for Trouble exposes the acute vulnerability of cruise ships to piracy, terrorism, and crime, both on the high seas and in domestic and foreign ports-of-call. While cruise ships have ramped up in size and passenger capacity to become floating skyscrapers housing as many as 7,000 passengers, and while piracy incidents have increased since 2008 as the world economy has deteriorated, there has been no corresponding increase or enhancement in onboard security personnel, external tactical units, preventive screening, or coordinated response planning to guard against the growing threat of acts of piracy and internal and external terrorist attacks. Commander Gaouette reveals to cruise passengers the very real security dangers they unwittingly face when they saunter up the gangway of a cruise ship for a carefree holiday. He sounds a clarion call to national and transnational security agencies, maritime regulators, legislators, and customers to compel the cruise industry to strengthen and reform its security programs before catastrophe strikes. The author, a longtime cruise industry insider who now serves as a top maritime security official in the Department of Homeland Security, details the many security defects and vulnerabilities of cruise ships, identifies the remedies, and makes the case for their urgent implementation. Extensively documented and illustrated, Cruising for Trouble is a vividly told cautionary for the ten million Americans who taken cruise-ship vacations each year and the millions more who would like to. As well as modeling the potential threats to cruise ships from pirates and maritime terrorists-who mimic each other's methods, overlap each other's territories, and might well find it mutually beneficial to combine their forces and resources-Commander Gaoutte recounts many actual examples of cruise-ship insecurity that have been swept under the carpet or spun by the cruise industry: pirate attacks, fires, onboard crime, mass food poisonings and infections, and the mysterious disappearances of cruise-ship passengers. A combination of photographs from the author, the U.S. Department of Defense, the Coast Guard, and API illustrate innovative security measures found on cruise ships, results of terrorist attacks, fire, piracy, and victims of cruise ship incidents. Provides a list of acronyms found throughout the book, such as the International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) codes and Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Includes over 500 endnote references Offers a comprehensive index

India-Pakistan Trade - Strengthening Economic Relations (Hardcover, 2015 ed.): Nisha Taneja, Sanjib Pohit India-Pakistan Trade - Strengthening Economic Relations (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Nisha Taneja, Sanjib Pohit
R2,925 R2,023 Discovery Miles 20 230 Save R902 (31%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Examining the implications of recent important developments, the primary aim of this book is to bridge the gaps in existing literature on India-Pakistan economic engagement and to examine various aspects of the trade normalization process.

The book includes familiar themes of India-Pakistan bilateral trade in goods and services, providing new insights into the potential for trade and the challenges involved in realizing it. The respective chapters examine the current trade trends and identify the possible sectors for bilateral FDI flows between the two countries, which could help forge deeper economic ties between them. In light of India s changed investment policy, this analysis is pertinent for investors and policy-makers alike.

The book also includes chapters on a variety of unconventional subjects, such as estimating the levels of informal trade, an analysis of a trade perception survey and identifying trade potential using a CGE modeling approach. Further, a number of sectors have been identified for in-depth analysis, including sports goods, healthcare and energy. These sector-based analyses reflect the gap between current levels of trade in the selected industries and the possible trade potential. The studies identify key tradable commodities in the health and sports industries, as well as opportunities for trading in energy. The book thus provides readers with a deep understanding of the process of normalizing economic relations and enhancing bilateral trade at the micro and macro levels, on the basis of which the authors subsequently provide recommendations for policymakers."

Fashion & Music (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Jochen Strahle Fashion & Music (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Jochen Strahle
R4,988 Discovery Miles 49 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book will broaden readers' understanding of the links between the music and fashion industries. It highlights the challenges currently facing the fashion industry in terms of hyper-competition, definition of ever-faster trends, changing consumer demands etc. In fact, the fashion industry is heavily influenced by the digital revolution in the music industry, which has changed the face of individual music consumption and social reference, and therefore, also has impacts on fashion consumption and social reference. This understanding is crucial in order to realign any fashion company's strategies to the demands of modern fashion consumers. In terms of content, the book first discusses the social perspective of fashion and music. This includes an analysis of music as a key influencer of fashion trends, both theoretically and on the basis of a case study on grunge music. Then the role of music in the fashion business is addressed, and covers in-store music and the role of music in fashion communication. Following up, the role of fashion in the music business is analyzed. This includes the trend of co-design of fashion collections, music artists' role of differentiation by style, and the market for music fashion merchandise articles (both theoretically and drawing on a case study). In closing, potential lessons learned from the music industry are developed for the fashion industry. This includes an analysis of the digital revolution and the advent of the crowdfunding idea (both theoretically and in a case study).

Quality-of-Life Community Indicators for Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management (Hardcover, 2011 ed.): Megha Budruk, Rhonda... Quality-of-Life Community Indicators for Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management (Hardcover, 2011 ed.)
Megha Budruk, Rhonda Phillips
R2,782 Discovery Miles 27 820 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

While community quality-of-life indicators are gaining much needed attention in both scholarly work and practice, their application in the areas of parks, recreation and tourism management are not as well known. The applicability of indicator systems for natural resource and natural resource area management within the parks and recreation arena is very high, including urban parks and recreation programs and their influence on quality of life.

Tourism is also an area that needs much more work in terms of assessing impacts as well as developing indicators for gauging progress in the long term. All three areas are an integrated discipline and most programs throughout the developed world are housed co-jointly. There are several researchers across the globe who are conducting innovative work in these areas. The editors feel that a volume on the topic will spur additional interests as well as serve to lead the research efforts.

Decision Making in Marketing and Finance - An Interdisciplinary Approach to Solving Complex Organizational Problems... Decision Making in Marketing and Finance - An Interdisciplinary Approach to Solving Complex Organizational Problems (Hardcover)
P. Koku
R3,249 Discovery Miles 32 490 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

As interest in MBA programs and business schools more generally continues to grow, it is essential that teachers and students analyse their established strategy for decision making. The successful use of case studies in business schools shows the superior outcomes of an interdisciplinary approach to problem solving. Disappointingly, functional departmental silos within universities still exist and keep problem solvers from seeing all the effects of a given issue. In addition to providing teaching material, Decision Making in Marketing and Finance provides motives and strategies to break down functional silos in making informed and effective business and finance decisions. Koku achieves his goal by showing how value can be created for shareholders and other stakeholders, linking marketing and finance decision making, and providing much-needed teaching materials for an interdisciplinary approach to case analysis.

Rock Climbing in Kentucky's Red River Gorge - An Oral History of Community, Resources, and Tourism (Hardcover): James N.... Rock Climbing in Kentucky's Red River Gorge - An Oral History of Community, Resources, and Tourism (Hardcover)
James N. Maples
R2,656 Discovery Miles 26 560 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Tells the fascinating story of the Red's climbing community through interviews with the people who lived that history and considers how sustainable ecotourism might contribute to the region economically. Rock Climbing in Kentucky's Red River Gorge documents, for the first time, fifty years of oral history from this famous climbing community. Through extensive interviews, Maples reconstructs the growth of rock climbing in the region-including a twice-failed dam project, mysterious first routes, unauthorized sport-route growth on public lands, and a controversial archaeological dig. The book details five decades of collaborations to secure ongoing access to some of the world's most beautiful and technically demanding routes and the challenges along the way. More than a recounting of the past, however, Rock Climbing in Kentucky's Red River Gorge uses the region's extraordinary history to argue that climbing has the potential to be a valuable source of sustainable economic activity in rural areas throughout Appalachia today and in the years to come. The book concludes by offering policy recommendations and lessons learned about building beneficial partnerships among climbers, local communities, and public land managers to encourage community development and ecotourism alongside preservation.

Taking the Heat - Women Chefs and Gender Inequality in the Professional Kitchen (Hardcover): Deborah A Harris, Patti Giuffre Taking the Heat - Women Chefs and Gender Inequality in the Professional Kitchen (Hardcover)
Deborah A Harris, Patti Giuffre
R2,981 Discovery Miles 29 810 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A number of recent books, magazines, and television programs have emerged that promise to take viewers inside the exciting world of professional chefs. While media suggest that the occupation is undergoing a transformation, one thing remains clear: being a chef is a decidedly male-dominated job. Over the past six years, the prestigious James Beard Foundation has presented 84 awards for excellence as a chef, but only 19 were given to women. Likewise, Food and Wine magazine has recognized the talent of 110 chefs on its annual "Best New Chef" list since 2000, and to date, only 16 women have been included. How is it that women - the gender most associated with cooking - have lagged behind men in this occupation? Taking the Heat examines how the world of professional chefs is gendered, what conditions have led to this gender segregation, and how women chefs feel about their work in relation to men. Tracing the historical evolution of the profession and analyzing over two thousand examples of chef profiles and restaurant reviews, as well as in-depth interviews with thirty-three women chefs, Deborah Harris and Patti Giuffre reveal a great irony between the present realities of the culinary profession and the traditional, cultural associations of cooking and gender. Since occupations filled with women are often culturally and economically devalued, male members exclude women to enhance the job's legitimacy. For women chefs, these professional obstacles and other challenges, such as how to balance work and family, ultimately push some of the women out of the career. Although female chefs may be outsiders in many professional kitchens, the participants in Taking the Heat recount advantages that women chefs offer their workplaces and strengths that Harris and Giuffre argue can help offer women chefs - and women in other male-dominated occupations - opportunities for greater representation within their fields.

Anthropology of Tourism (Hardcover): Dennison Nash Anthropology of Tourism (Hardcover)
Dennison Nash; Edited by Jafar Jafari
R3,018 Discovery Miles 30 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Hardbound. This book is designed to give an overview and critical assessment of the developing field of tourism study in anthropology. It aims to engage the reader with questions that anthropologists have raised about tourist and the ways that they have dealt with them in their research. Basic research from three theoretical perspectives is reviewed and assessed: tourist as a form of development or acculturation, as a personal transition, and as a kind of social super structure. In later chapters, the applied side of the field is examined, including considerations of tourist policy and sustainable tourism development. Most chapters include summary case studies illustrating some of the important points under examination. The book concludes with a discussion of the integration of basic and applied approaches in the anthropological agenda on tourism and suggestions concerning the future course of study in the field.

Tourism Community Relationships (Hardcover): P.L. Pearce, G.M. Moscardo, G.F. Ross Tourism Community Relationships (Hardcover)
P.L. Pearce, G.M. Moscardo, G.F. Ross; Edited by Jafar Jafari
R2,915 Discovery Miles 29 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Hardbound. The study of tourism is, arguably, ready for a thorough theoretical yet empirical analysis of the relationship between tourism and host communities. Pearce, Moscardo and Ross deal with the impacts tourism is having on communities internationally, going beyond a mere review of such impacts to investigate the origins, development and manifestations of community attitudes. A theoretical perspective is developed on how communities come to understand tourism and react to it. In terms of its disciplinary approaches the book combines social-psychological, sociological, economic and media analyses and can properly be termed a study within the new specialism of tourism. A number of yet-to-be-published studies of tourism and communities are reported on, and some large scale existing works on tourism and community reaction are reviewed and revisited.

Electronic Security Systems - Reducing False Alarms (Hardcover, 3rd edition): Philip Walker Electronic Security Systems - Reducing False Alarms (Hardcover, 3rd edition)
Philip Walker
R1,992 Discovery Miles 19 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the latest edition, Philip Walker not only tackles the electronic aspect of the design of a security system, but also examines the human factor in such systems. In his own words: 'Electronic aids are added to enable security officers to do their jobs better, but not to do their jobs for them'.
Today, with the escalation of crime and growing concerns for security, there has been a great increase in the number of electronic security systems. Unfortunately, despite improvements in reliability in terms of equipment manufacture, false alarms do still occur, and they waste a large amount of police time; approximately ninety out of one hundred alarms investigated by the police are false. In the light of this, the new edition of Electronic Security Systems couldn't come at a better time, as it deals extensively with methods of reducing false alarms, allowing the police to concentrate on real breeches of security, and thus ultimately to reduce crime.
The extensive and unusual combination of experience that Philip Walker has in the world of electronics, communications and as a security consulting engineer makes him eminently qualified to tackle such subjects.
At only 30, this hardback book is an essential addition to your security collection. It has 320 pages packed with advice and technical knowledge, 40 photographs and 25 line diagrams and a good index.
