Lin Shu, Inc. explores the dynamic interactions between literary
translation, commercial publishing, and the politics of
"traditional" Chinese culture in the late nineteenth and early
twentieth centuries. It breaks new ground as the first full-length
study in any Western language on the career and works of Lin Shu
and his many collaborators in the publishing, academic, and
business worlds. Integrating literary scholarship, translation
studies, and print history, this book provides new insights into a
controversial figure in world literature and his place in the
profound transformations in authorship and cultural production in
modern China. Well before Ezra Pound and Bertolt Brecht transformed
Western-language poetry and theater with their inventions of
Chinese culture, Lin Shu and his collaborators had already embarked
on a translation project unique in modern literature. Although he
knew no foreign languages, in a 20-year period Lin Shu worked with
19 different assistants schooled in English, French, and other
tongues to complete more than 180 book-length translations into
classical Chinese. Through burgeoning print outlets such as the
Commercial Press (Shangwu yinshuguan), Lin and his collaborators
offered many readers in China their first taste of "Western
literature" - usually 19th-century novels and short stories from
the United States, England, and France. At the same time, Lin Shu
leveraged his labors as a translator to make himself into a leading
authority on "traditional" Chinese literature and cultural values.
From what one publisher called his "factory of words," Lin issued
scores of textbooks and anthologies of classical-language
literature, along with short stories, poems, essays, and a handful
of full-length novels.
Ever since Odysseus heard tales of his own exploits being retold
among strangers, audiences and readers have been alive to the
complications and questions arising from the translation of myth.
How are myths taken and carried over into new languages, new
civilizations, or new media? An international group of scholars is
gathered in this volume to present diverse but connected case
studies which address the artistic and political implications of
the changing condition of myth - this most primal and malleable of
forms. 'Translation' is treated broadly to encompass not only
literary translation, but also the transfer of myth across cultures
and epochs. In an age when the spiritual world is in crisis,
Translating Myth constitutes a timely exploration of myth's
endurance, and represents a consolidation of the status of myth
studies as a discipline in its own right.
This is a book about translation and literary influence. It takes
as its subject Spain's most important contemporary novelist, Javier
Marias (1951-), who worked as a literary translator for a
significant portion of his early career. Since then, he has
maintained that translation had a crucial impact on the development
of his writing style and his literary frame of reference. It
examines his claims to the influence of three writers whose works
he translated, Laurence Sterne, Sir Thomas Browne, and Vladimir
Nabokov. It does so by engaging in close reading of his
translations, examining how he meets the linguistic, syntactic, and
cultural challenges they present. His prolonged engagement with
their prose is then set alongside his own novels and short stories,
the better to discern precisely how and in what ways his works have
been shaped by their influence and through translation. Hence this
study begins by asking why Marias should have turned to translation
in the cultural landscape of Spain in the 1970s and how the
ideological standpoints that animated his decision affect the way
he translates. His translation of Sterne's Life and Opinions of
Tristram Shandy, Gentleman is set alongside his
pseudo-autobiographical novel Negra espalda del tiempo (Dark Back
of Time), while his translation of Sir Thomas Browne's Urn Burial
is then analysed in tandem with that produced by Jorge Luis Borges
and Adolfo Bioy Casares. Subsequent chapters examine how Browne's
prose has shaped Marias's thinking on oblivion, posterity, and
time. The final chapters offer an analysis of the partial
translation and palimpsest of Lolita he undertook in the early
1990s and of his most ambitious novel to date, Tu rostro manana
(Your Face Tomorrow), as a work in which characterization is
underpinned by both literary allusion and the hydridization of
works Marias has translated.
Christianity is not only a global but also an intercultural
