In his best-selling Strictly English Simon Heffer explained how to
write and speak our language well. In Simply English he offers an
entertaining and supremely useful A-Z guide to frequent errors,
common misunderstandings and stylistic howlers. What is the
difference between amend and emend, between imply and infer, and
between uninterested and disinterested? When should one put owing
to rather than due to? Why should the temptation to write actually,
basically or at this moment in time always be strenuously resisted?
How does one use an apostrophe correctly, ensure that one
understands what alibi really means, and avoid the perils of the
double negative? With articles on everything from punctuation to
tabloid English to adverbs and adjectives, Simply English is the
essential companion for anyone who cares about the language and
wants to use it correctly.
The complexities of the English language can be daunting for even
the most fluent speakers, and for Canadians this is doubly so with
the mixture of British and American traditions. Almost anyone
engaged in formal writing will sometimes need to consult a usage
guide for advice, but Canadians have always been forced to choose
between a British or an American source. With the Guide to Canadian
English Usage, writers will have an authoritative reference based
on Canadian sources that provides pithy direction on numerous
details of the language.
From the indefinite article to zoology, alphabetically arranged
entries clarify issues of word choice, punctuation, spelling, and
abbreviation. Throughout it offers guidance on Canadianisms,
confusibles, difficult expressions, First Nation names, foreign
phrases, grammar, inclusive language, punctuation, spelling, and
troublesome pronunciations. Each entry explains the problem at
hand, outlines a range of prescriptions, and then either recommends
a particular usage or reviews the alternatives from which the
now-informed reader can choose. All entries feature a wide range of
fascinating quotations from Canadian sources.
Newly reissued in an attractive hardcover edition, the Guide to
Canadian English Usage is the essential reference for any writer,
editor, or speaker of English in Canada.
This book makes punctuation more fun and easier to learn than
traditional approaches do. It teaches the natural way, by example:
each lesson begins with quotes that exemplify good punctuation and
sentence structure. Quotations are humorous and informative, drawn
from the words of notable figures-Shakespeare, Mark Twain, Jerry
Seinfeld, Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Jennifer Lawrence, and many
others. Short essays accompany each lesson, showing how each
punctuation mark originated and how its use has altered over time.
Correct punctuation is vital for clear, accurate, and natural
writing. Anyone preparing a course assignment, applying for a job
or for college admission, or doing any other formal writing needs
to know the standard conventions of punctuation. Yet many people
have never been taught how to punctuate. A necessary addition to
any writer's bookshelf, this enjoyable book will teach readers to
punctuate effectively and confidently-through over 500 memorable
quotes and clear explanations of the rules.
The volume comprises 232 thematically organised articles based on
the highly successful "Encyclopedia of Language & Linguistics"
and the "International Encyclopedia of Education" (2nd edition)
revised and, where necessary, updated and supplemented throughout.
Dealing with all topics at the intersection between education and
language, the work will prove an invaluable reference for all
researchers in the field. Never has there been more intense debate
over different attitudes and approaches to teaching and language.
This volume will provide a state of the art description of all the
topics of interest to language educators and all those concerned
with making and implementing policy in language education.
Fundamental topics include: the social context, society, national,
school and curricular policy, literacy and oracy, language
acquisition, bi- and plurilingualism, testing, TEFL, TESOL,
SLA.

- Deel C bevat nuttige inligting oor byvoorbeeld sinsoorte, woordorde in
sinne en die konstruksie van paragrawe. Daar is ook ’n kort oorsig oor
tekstipes.
(2017) is volledig in hierdie uitgawe verreken.

Mursi is a Nilo-Saharan language spoken by a small group of people
who live in the Lower Omo Valley, Ethiopia, and is one of the most
endangered languages of the country. Based on the fieldwork that
the author conducted in beautiful villages of the Mursi community,
this descriptive grammar is organized into fourteen chapters rich
in examples and an appendix containing four transcribed texts. The
readers are thus provided with a clear and useful tool, which
constitutes and important addition to our knowledge of Mursi and of
other related languages spoken in the area. Besides being an
empirical data source for linguists interested in typology and
endangered language description and documentation, the grammar
constitutes an invaluable gift to the speech community.
This is the first broad, detailed grammar of the Giziga language,
which belongs to the Chadic branch of the Afro-Asiatic language
family. The language is spoken in parts of the Far North Region of
the Republic of Cameroon and can be divided into two dialects,
Giziga and Northern Giziga, with about 80,000 native speakers in
total. This volume describes the Giziga dialect, occasionally
referring to the Northern variety, and aims to provide new
information about this and other Afro-Asiatic languages for further
research in linguistics, history, anthropology, sociology and
related fields. The book will also be a tool helping Giziga
speakers preserve their language, history and culture for future
generations.
Packed with clear guidance on the nuts and bolts of grammar and
plenty of examples, this text will help students master the
fundamentals of English grammar and tackle written assignments with

areas of difficulty, such as forming different tenses, using
connectives to link ideas and build an argument, punctuating
sentences and choosing the right words. Each unit is presented on a
double-page spread, making it easy for students to flick through
the book and quickly find the unit they need. Short, focused
exercises at the end of each unit - with answers provided at the
back of the book - make this text ideal for both self-study and
