The German Linguistic Studies Series is a comprehensive and
outstanding forum in its field. It has borne the name of its
subject in its title since the foundation of the series in the
eighth decade of the last century. The series is comprehensive in
the broad spectrum of topics covered (language levels, varieties,
communication forms, epochs) in the range of research perspectives
(theoretical and empirical studies, fundamental research and
applications, interdisciplinarity with psychology, the social
sciences etc.) and methodologies (the sole criterion is quality),
in the rhythm of research (trends are perceived and also set,
achievements are secured) and in the forms of presentation
(monographs, textbooks, collected volumes, dictionaries).
Professorial theses, outstanding doctoral theses, pioneering
research findings from wider contexts, but also the surprising
'stroke of genius' set the standards for inclusion in the series.

An indispensable companion for readers, writers, and even casual
users of the language, the Penguin Modern Classics edition of
Kingsley Amis's The King's English features a new introduction by
Martin Amis. The King's English is Kingsley Amis's authoritative
and witty guide to the use and abuse of the English language. A
scourge of illiteracy and a thorn in the side of pretension, Amis
provides indispensable advice about the linguistic blunders that
lie in wait for us, from danglers and four-letter words to jargon
and even Welsh rarebit. If you have ever wondered whether it's
acceptable to start a sentence with 'and', to boldly split an
infinitive, or to cross your sevens in the French style, Amis has
the answer - or a trenchant opinion. By turns reflective, acerbic
and provocative, The King's English is for anyone who cares about
how the English language is used. Kingsley Amis (1922-1995), born
in London, wrote poetry, criticism, and short stories, but is best
remembered as the novelist whose works offered a comic
deconstruction of post-war Britain. Amis explored his
disillusionment with British society in novels such as Lucky Jim
(1954) and That Uncertain Feeling (1955); his other works include
The Green Man (1970) Stanley and the Women (1984), and The Old
Devils (1986) which won the Booker Prize. If you enjoyed The King's
English you might like Amis's Lucky Jim, also available in Penguin
Modern Classics. 'A terrific book ... learned, robust, aggressive,
extremely funny' Sebastian Faulks

Increasingly, writing handbooks are seen as over-produced and
overpriced. One stands out: The Broadview Guide to Writing is
published in an elegant but simple format, and sells for roughly
half the price of its fancier-looking competitors. That does not
change with the new edition; what does change and stay up-to-date
is the content of the book. The seventh Canadian edition brings a
substantial re-organization of the contents under three headings:
Writing Processes, Writing Mechanics, and Writing Contexts.
Coverage of the MLA, APA, Chicago, and CSE styles of documentation
has been substantially revised to reflect the most recent updates,
including the 2020 APA and 2021 MLA changes. As in earlier
editions, the Broadview Guide offers wide ranging coverage of
academic argument; of writing and critical thinking; and of writing
about literature. Coverage of personal and informal writing is
included for the first time-as is a sample literary essay in MLA
style (in addition to the sample MLA interdisciplinary essay). The
'How to be Good with Words' chapter (on issues of gender, race,
religion etc.) has been extensively revised, as has the material on
electronic etiquette.
"Plain Style" is an amusing and instructive guide to written
English by the late Christopher Lasch, author of "The Culture of
Narcissism," "The True and Only Heaven," and many other memorable
works of American history and social criticism. Written for the
benefit of the students at the University of Rochester, where Lasch
taught from 1970 until his death in 1994, it quickly established
itself in typescript as a local classic--a lively, witty, and
historically minded alternative to the famous volume by William
Strunk and E. B. White, "The Elements of Style." Now available for
the first time in published form, "Plain Style" is fundamentally a
clear, readable, practical guide to the timeless principles of
effective composition. At the same time, however, in ways that
Stewart Weaver explains in his critical introduction, it is a
distinctive and revealing addition to the published work of an
eminent American thinker. No mere primer, "Plain Style" is an essay
in cultural criticism, a political treatise even, by one for whom
directness, clarity, and honesty of expression were essential to
the living spirit of democracy. As the teachers and students who
have for years benefited from its succinct wisdom will testify,
"Plain Style" is an indispensable guide to writing and, indeed,
Christopher Lasch's least-expected but perhaps most serviceable
work.

First published in 1984, this book was designed to benefit the
foreign learner who wishes to grasp the essential basis of English
stress so that he or she can go on to predict stress patterns in
new words. It is aimed at teachers of English as a foreign language
and helps them to communicate English stress effectively to their
students. The book bridges the gap between books that are mainly
anecdotal or abstract, practical or theoretical, or made up of
lists or principles.
