"Plain Style" is an amusing and instructive guide to written English by the late Christopher Lasch, author of "The Culture of Narcissism," "The True and Only Heaven," and many other memorable works of American history and social criticism. Written for the benefit of the students at the University of Rochester, where Lasch taught from 1970 until his death in 1994, it quickly established itself in typescript as a local classic--a lively, witty, and historically minded alternative to the famous volume by William Strunk and E. B. White, "The Elements of Style." Now available for the first time in published form, "Plain Style" is fundamentally a clear, readable, practical guide to the timeless principles of effective composition. At the same time, however, in ways that Stewart Weaver explains in his critical introduction, it is a distinctive and revealing addition to the published work of an eminent American thinker. No mere primer, "Plain Style" is an essay in cultural criticism, a political treatise even, by one for whom directness, clarity, and honesty of expression were essential to the living spirit of democracy. As the teachers and students who have for years benefited from its succinct wisdom will testify, "Plain Style" is an indispensable guide to writing and, indeed, Christopher Lasch's least-expected but perhaps most serviceable work.
The German Linguistic Studies Series is a comprehensive and outstanding forum in its field. It has borne the name of its subject in its title since the foundation of the series in the eighth decade of the last century. The series is comprehensive in the broad spectrum of topics covered (language levels, varieties, communication forms, epochs) in the range of research perspectives (theoretical and empirical studies, fundamental research and applications, interdisciplinarity with psychology, the social sciences etc.) and methodologies (the sole criterion is quality), in the rhythm of research (trends are perceived and also set, achievements are secured) and in the forms of presentation (monographs, textbooks, collected volumes, dictionaries). Professorial theses, outstanding doctoral theses, pioneering research findings from wider contexts, but also the surprising 'stroke of genius' set the standards for inclusion in the series.
Wordories is a book of pure imagination. A wordory is a one-paragraph story or thought in which vocabulary words are intentionally incorporated. The content is humorous and, on occasion, mildly adult. The intent is to make exposure to vocabulary an enjoyable experience. Words are defined both at the wordory and in a glossary. The book would make a wonderful addition to anyone's library, both for pleasurable reading and as an educational reference book.
Is 'millenarian' correctly spelled, and what is the difference between a possum and an opossum? Can there ever be an 'alternate solution', and how many commas should there be in the sentence 'I wrapped it up wrote a label and popped it in the mail box'? Should I set The Four Seasons in italics or in inverted commas (or are they called quotation marks, and should I use single or double?) What was St Petersburg known as in 1972? What was the Great Patriotic War, should 'gipsy' (or is it 'gypsy'?) have an initial capital letter, and on what date do Americans celebrate Thanksgiving? Does the USA ever have typhoons? Did Yugoslavia still exist in 1998, and if not what was it called? Should I address Park Ji-Sung as Mr Park, or as Mr Ji, or as Mr Sung? Who was Elizabeth Taylor's first husband, and what was John Wayne's real name? Do I write 'a hotel' or 'an hotel'? Is the hyphen correct in the phrase 'a curly-leafed lettuce'? Are Peking and Beijing the same place, and if so why the two names? Does Freddie Mac have anything to do with Fannie May? The (essential) companion for writers and editors is a ready reference to information commonly required, errors commonly committed, conventions commonly accepted, and problems and language idiosyncrasies commonly encountered by writers and editors as well as by teachers and general users of English.

." . . In Diagramming the Scriptures. . . the curriculum starts with the simple sentence, adds precept upon precept until the learner is able to master complex sentences. . . As each concept is introduced, the student has plenty of practice, followed by quizzes, and later a cumulative test over the entire text. As an educator, a homeschool parent, and a tutor I see this curriculum as an excellent choice for a homeschool, a Christian school classroom, or for an individual of any age who is interested in studying grammar or God's Word, word by word." Deana Haines, Families for Home Education Executive Director ." . .I am quite pleased to recommend your book to college professors as an excellent addition to their basic texts in teaching English grammar. . . Since your examples and exercises utilize Bible sentences, your book is also a valuable asset to the study of hermeneutics." Jim Anderson, Chancellor, Midwestern Baptist College, SBC "Diagramming the Scriptures is a unique way to help focus the Bible student on the words and meanings of Scripture. I commend Shirley Forsen for providing this excellent book and recommend it to all who desire to "go deeper" in their study of God's Word." Dr John A Hash, Bible Pathway Ministries ." . .I recommend Diagramming the Scriptures to all scholars to clarify interpretations of all books and to all teachers of grammar." Glada Kelley, retired teacher and librarian ." . .The best and unique part of Miss Forsen's book is that Bible verses are used for the examples and exercises. This teaches the student an important aspect of "rightly dividing the word of truth": understanding how the structure of the verse influences its meaning. Diagramming the Scriptures teaches necessary skills, both educational and spiritual." Laura Blunk, college freshman

Is it correct to pronounce "mischievous" as a three-syllable word
(miss-chi-vuhss) or a four -syllable word (miss-chee-vi-uhss)? If
it is right to use "alumni" as the plural of "alumnus," why is it
wrong to use "octopi" as the plural of "octopus"? Should we write
"12 am" or "12 a.m."? What is the difference between "principle"
and "principal"? Is it "just desserts" or "just deserts"?
