Dancing on the beach after a swim in the Mediterranean, taking the
waters in fashionable Baden-Baden, boating on the Black Sea - the
myriad uses of water imply that the term itself possesses multiple
meanings. Focusing on Europe, this book addresses how using water
for relaxation intersects with ideas about class, gender,
nationality, and consumption. It also explores the ways Europeans
have turned to water for pleasure, relaxation, and profit over the
last two hundred years as the enjoyment of free time developed from
a privilege into a right. Contributors capture key moments of
social and cultural transition in the nineteenth and twentieth
centuries -- moments during which new social distinctions emerged,
debates about nationalism and cosmopolitanism flourished, concepts
of hygiene became politicized, and attitudes about travel and
vacationing developed.
What kinds of relationships exist between recreational uses of
water and cultural, social, or political practices? How have such
relationships found representation in art, landscaping, or
architecture? Who visits water resorts or beaches and what role
have these places played in the emergence of collective identities
or in lending authority to social distinctions? How does the
organization of leisure activities around water reflect ideas about
purity and pollution, in a moral, social, or physical sense?
This exciting venture into 'uncharted waters' will fascinate
historians, geographers and anyone with a keen interest in European
cultural studies, art and landscape.
John Quirk loves history, drawing and boats and these three
elements come together in this attractive and entertaining book. He
has sought out obscure episodes or familiar events from the past
and written engagingly about them, illustrated with his excellent
colour cartoons. Where possible he relates the historical
happenings and maritime moments to the present day, be it when
tracing the history of the screw, misinformation (fake news) during
the Second World War, plague ships in the fourteenth century, or
Russia's ill-fated war with Japan in 1904. The events covered range
from Henry V's invasion of France in 1415, consisting mainly of
chartered French ships and paid for partially by Dick Whittington,
to episodes in the Second World War, like the Somali Camel Corps
capturing a German U-boat. Other historic figures involved include
Horatio Nelson, Napoleon, Rudolf Diesel and Lawrence of Arabia. The
25 stories and over 100 cartoons are a treasure-trove of
compelling, salt-infused, tales told with imagination and humour,
with an eye on the present day, which will be enjoyed by anyone
with an interest in maritime history (or even just history).

A lifetime of reflections on the joys, terrors, and triumphs of
sailing from Britain's greatest yachtsman The first man to sail
solo and non-stop around the world, in 1969, Robin Knox-Johnston
instantly became an international legend. In addition to setting
other global sailing records, he has led sailing expeditions to far
flung destinations, amassing a breadth of experience few can equal.
In his new book, a compilation of his monthly articles in Yachting
World, Sir Robin shares his thoughts on the majesty, mystery, and
dangers of sailing the open seas. He describes the "Joy of the Solo
Sailor" as well as the realities of safety at sea and life on board
a yacht, recalling his escape from a perfect storm, night terrors
and waves capable of devouring a ship.Allows readers to experience
the joys (going round the Horn of Africa in a day) of sailing, as
well as close calls Sheds light on the role of the media and
sailing as well as the changing face of sailing A fascinating
record of heroic and larger-than-life exploits from Britain's most
famous celebrated yachtsman, Knox-Johnston on Sailing is a
fascinating account of one man's quest for physical challenge and
adventure and the rewards they offer.
Medical emergencies can happen anytime and anywhere, so first aid
training can be very useful. It can be especially important if you
are out at sea, where medical assistance can be hours or even days
away. When onboard a seagoing vessel, even minor accidents, such as
burns, sprains, and fractures, has the potential to become
life-threatening. Being prepared and knowing essential first aid
care can be the difference between life and death. This illustrated
instructional guide offers a quick overview for the correct way to
provide first aid. Chapters include standard medical examinations,
different illnesses and related symptoms, effects of heat, cold,
and water, and collecting relevant information about a sick or
injured person. Such information is valuable not only for the
person providing first aid, but also to give over the radio,
because it may facilitate the decision-making about treatment
strategy, thus saving lives under extreme circumstances.
Since J W Norie published the first edition of his Complete Set of
Nautical Tables and Epitome of Practical Navigation in 1803, many
changes to the tables have been necessary in both content and
presentation. New tables have been included, obsolete ones deleted
to conform with changing techniques of navigation, with the aim of
improving the accuracy of the calculated position and reducing the
tedium of the calculation. Since the commissioning of the Global
Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), its proven accuracy and
reliability in all weather conditions have resulted in confidence
and almost unquestioning dependence on its ability to provide a
vessel’s position, course and speed. Its use is widespread but
the marine environment is a hostile one and failure of electronic
equipment or of the system itself is a possibility. No prudent
seafarer would proceed on an ocean passage without a reliable
navigational back-up. The Explanation is in the form of a detailed
step-by-step description, by means of worked examples, of the
different methods of performing navigational calculations using a
scientific calculator and/or the tables. A number of esteemed
editors have worked on Nories’ Nautical Tables over the years and
this edition includes new contributions from François Hugo. This
edition now presents formulae in an appropriate format for direct
entry to a scientific calculator. Because the possibility of
navigation without even an appropriate calculator exists, the
logarithms have been retained. • All the tables required for
coastal and deep sea navigation are included • A simple uniform
method of interpolation for all the trigonometrical tables is used
• Certain tables and data are also included which are not readily
available on board ship or are only used in the examination room.
Though geographically close the two areas covered in this sea
kayaking guidebook are as different in character as it is possible
to conceive. The South East of England has a varied landscape of
chalk cliffs, pebble beaches, vast expanses of sand, mudflats, and
river estuaries. At one extreme the tidal Thames runs through the
densely populated City of London and at the other the deserted
North Norfolk coast. Conversely the Channel Islands are a small
number of large islands and a vast number of islets and reefs. Here
we are talking pink granite, white sandy beaches and very strong
tidal streams. They are closer to France than to England (a mere
12km between Les Ecrehous reef and mainland France). Many of the
routes here are very committing but there are also a good number of
gentler paddles.
Imagine paddling along, just ahead of a wave that has risen to a
monstrous 70 ft - a thousand tons of moving liquid arching over
your head whilst you accelerate up to 55 mph, then fly through the
arc of rushing water in a race to pull clear before it collapses
upon you. 'Extreme surf' is a tribute to the adrenalin rush of
catching a big wave. A fascinating journey through the world's most
awe-inspiring surfing locations, from Teahupoo, Tahiti to
Mavericks, North California, it describes one of the currently most
loved, yet dangerous sports. Beginning with a history of the
sport's evolution, the book takes us to the most remote, most
popular, and most dangerous surfing spots. From the longest,
fastest, coldest and warmest waves to the deadliest waters, this
book will thrill with its images and text. 'Extreme Surf' is the
4th title in the successful 'Extreme' sport series ('Extreme Golf
04'; 'Extreme Sail 06', 'Extreme Running 07'.) This is
mini-edition.

what to do ashore. The book is enhanced with colour charts and
detailed photography, including spectacular aerial shots of ports,
harbours and anchorages.
Wyl Menmuir’s The Draw of the Sea is a beautifully written and
deeply moving portrait of the sea and the people whose livelihoods
revolve around it, examining the ephemeral but universal pull the
sea holds over the human imagination. Since the earliest stages of
human development, the sea has fascinated and entranced us. It
feeds us, sustaining communities and providing livelihood, but it
also holds immense destructive power that threatens to destroy all
we have created. Â It connects us to faraway places, offering
the promise of new lands and voyages of discovery, but also shapes
our borders, carving divisions between landmasses and eroding the
very ground beneath our feet. In this lyrical meditation on what it
is that draws us to the waters' edge, author Wyl Menmuir tells the
stories of the people whose lives revolve around the coastline and
all it has to offer. In twelve interlinked chapters, Menmuir
explores the lives of local fishermen steeped in the rich
traditions of a fishing community, the beachcombers who wander the
shores in search of the varied objects that wash ashore and the
stories they tell, and all number of others who have made their
lives around the sea. In the specifics of these livelihoods and
their rich histories and traditions, Wyl Menmuir captures the
universal human connection to the ocean’s edge. Into this
seductive tapestry Wyl weaves the story of how the sea has
beckoned, consoled and restored him. The Draw of the Sea is a
meaningful and moving work into how we interact with the
environment around us and how it comes to shape the course of our
lives. As unmissable as it is compelling, as profound as it is
personal, this must-read book will delight anyone familiar with the
intimate and powerful pull which the sea holds over us.

Motor skill acquisition and athlete development practices are
rapidly evolving. Positioned at the forefront of this evolution,
the constraints-led approach encourages practitioners to consider
the athlete as a whole person, with unique traits, abilities, and
capacities. Accordingly, an athlete's competitive success lies in
the practitioner's ability to adapt their programming to the unique
needs of each athlete and to develop an understanding of the
athlete-environment relationship. A Constraints-led Approach to
Swim Coaching applies contemporary motor skill acquisition and
athlete development practices to swimming. This book encourages
coaches to re-consider how they approach skill development in a
sport that requires considerable physical training and highly
efficiency movement. It presents a framework for identifying the
various constraints that determine the ability to perform at a high
level. It then offers coaches' practical examples to navigate the
manipulation of constraints to support the development of physical
capacities and the ability to effectively utilize those capacities
through efficient movement. These frameworks are broadly inclusive
to the global sports programming market. The book is written
through a 'conversive' voice and is accessible to a broad audience
interested in athlete development and programming such as coaches,
sport scientists, support staff, athletes, and parents. At the same
time, academics, and students in the areas of sport coaching,
biomechanics, motor skill acquisition, strength and conditioning,
and related disciplines will find interest in the insights provided
from this underrepresented niche in sports.
Detailed information on rivers, including river profiles with a
visual gradient for each mile.
Based on the exceptional and fascinating eyewitness account of a
17th century Spanish padre, Dave Horner's Shipwreck is the
absorbing and true story of two immense galleons that were lost
(along with hundreds of passengers and millions of pesos in
treasure) to disasters at sea. Shipwreck is an extraordinary
literary adventure which interweaves accounts of the many attempts
throughout the past three centuries to recover the sunken treasure,
including the recent discovery and salvage of one of the galleons
by Dave Horner himself. Shipwreck is an outstanding history of true
adventure on the high seas, past and present, which is wonderfully
enhanced for the reader with 50 photographic illustrations, six
maps, four line drawings, seven appendices, as well as
bibliographies of archival sources, institutions, original
documents or primary works, and a general listing of thematically
appropriate titles for further suggested readings.
What does it take to dive Titanic's sister ship? This huge vessel
from a bygone golden age of ocean travel lies at over 100 metres
(330') below the surface. It is not a dive for the faint-hearted.
Requiring meticulous planning, precise execution and good
conditions, only the most capable technical divers will ever
experience it. Even then, tragically some do not make it back to
the surface. Expedition Britannic is the story of the May 2019
mission to dive the Olympic-class liner-turned-hospital ship, HMHS
Britannic. Sunk near the Greek island of Kea during World War I,
she will only be ticked off the bucket list of relatively few of
the most dedicated deep divers. Steeped in history, the opportunity
to see a largely intact near-replica of the world's most famous
ocean liner makes it an ultimate dive to aspire to. Deep wreck
photography specialist Rick Ayrton is one such diver. Assisted by
expedition leader Scott Roberts, he takes us through the planning,
logistics and preparation essential for scaling one of the
pinnacles of wreck diving. Then we explore the wreck with him -
going deeper than most divers will in their lifetimes to photograph
this once great ship - and make new discoveries.
When mapmakers of the distant past came to the end of the known
world, they would inscribe 'Here There Be Sea Monsters.' When Tori
McClure attempted to row solo across the Atlantic Ocean in a
23-foot plywood boat with no motor or sail, she had no
comprehension of the size of the monsters she would find. In deep
solitude and perilous conditions, McClure was a loner determined to
prove what one person with a mission can do. When she is finally
brought to her knees by the worst hurricane season in the history
of the North Atlantic, she must signal for help and go home in what
she thinks is disgrace. Back in Kentucky, her life begins to change
in unexpected ways. She falls in love. She is obliged to embrace
her own vulnerability. And she meets Muhammad Ali, who tells her
that she does not want to be known as the woman who 'almost' rowed
across the Atlantic Ocean. So with her friends and her lover, she
devises a strategy that will carry her to the opposite shore. With
a wry sense of humour and a strong voice, McClure give us a true
memoir of an explorer who maps her world with rare emotional
honesty.
