Written for coaches and crews that are past beginner level but new
to competitive rowing, "High Performance Rowing" doesn't aim to
cover every aspect of rowing, but just concentrates on how to make
your boat go faster. It is a detailed guide to fitness and strength
training, and covers equipment and techniques needed for improving
performance at different levels of competition. Topics include tips
on improving technique, how to write a training program, and
selection of crews.
The Mirror dinghy was a significant factor in the boom of dinghy
sailing in the 1960s, introducing thousands to the delights of
sailing. While sailing has come a long way since then and there
have been a lot of far more exotic craft launched, the Mirror
remains a fantastic boat in which to learn to sail and to compete
at the highest levels. With this second edition, The Mirror Book
has been bought into the Start to Finish series format alongside
such revered books as The Laser Book and The Topper Book, The
Catamaran Book and The Foiling Dinghy Book. Like these titles, this
book tells you everything you need to know about sailing the Mirror
(whether it be the original gaff-rigged boat or has the newer
Bermuda rig). Written for both those starting out through to those
striving to win a championship, the book is packed with practical
advice and illustrated with step-by-step photographs. It covers:
setting up the Mirror and early sailing experiences; developing
skills on all points of sailing and with the spinnaker; racing
& masterclasses to become a championship winner. Over 180
photographs show you exactly how it's done, and 72 diagrams
illustrate key boat parts, the different points of sailing and
complex on-the-water scenarios with clarity. It is written by Peter
Aitken, formerly the UK National Mirror Coach, who has coached
teams to win world championships in the Mirror, Cadet and 420
classes, and Tim Davison, a successful racer and author of
countless books on sailing. The UK Mirror Class Association have
contributed to this update and it is endorsed by Dave Wade, double
Mirror National Champion, who says: "Armed with this book, your
understanding of Mirror sailing techniques will grow, and your
results will improve. I thoroughly recommend it."
This guide showcases the world of extreme surfing, describing the
unique culture associated with this daredevil's sport, providing

Australia. All over the world, extreme surfers risk severe injury
or even death from riptides, shark attacks, and collisions with the
seabed itself, just to experience the ultimate high from
tackling-and triumphing over-one of the most powerful forces on
earth. Surfing: The Ultimate Guide explains the culture of extreme
surfing-including the often violent "locals only" mentality-and
analyzes the dangers involved in riding the world's biggest and
most ferocious waves. The author examines the history of extreme
surfing, including past and contemporary heroes; the science of
giant waves; the technical criteria for riding them; and the future
of big-wave riding. Includes a bibliography of primary and
secondary sources and current websites Provides a comprehensive
glossary of surfing "vocabulary" Contains an index of names,
places, and terms relevant to the sport of surfing

somewhere new, don't leave home without The Outdoor Swimming Guide.
"The 40-Knot Sailboat" is for boat designers or sailing
enthusiasts looking to maximize their sailing speeds and improve
handling. Although he originally published this book in 1963,
Bernard Smith had such advanced thinking and technical insights
that his work is still studied and important to anyone interested
in creating the fastest sailboats.
"The 40-Knot Sailboat" is divided into three parts:
- Part one explains the history of the sailboat's problems. Part
two recounts developments relating to the Aerohydrofoil. Part three
focuses on the technical aspects of Smith's innovative designs,
including both non-technical and technical (which include
mathematical formulas) aspects.
"The 40-Knot Sailboat" is must reading for anyone serious about
creating cutting edge sailboats.
Today, yachts are often equipped with radar, GPS, chart plotters,
AIS, etc. This equipment has also become much more reliable, making
it possible to make long offshore passages without a great
knowledge of navigation. However, such equipment can be set up
wrongly, interpreted incorrectly, malfunction or lose power. In
these circumstances, knowledge of traditional navigation can become
extremely important. This book will teach you how to navigate in
the traditional way using compass, log and plotter; and also how to
navigate using electronic aids like GPS, radar and chart plotter.
In addition, you will learn some basic celestial navigation using
the sun and stars to obtain your position using sextant, almanacs,
tables and a watch. Each method of navigation is explained
alongside detailed illustrations and examples, combining to make a
straightforward and easy-to-follow guide. Due to the design of the
book, we have had to restrict the layout of the ebook to PDF style
which may result in giving you a more restricted reading
experience. For this reason, we would not recommend viewing it on
very small screens.
Mindfulness and Surfing casts a fresh perspective on this popular
sport, and explores how riding the waves can be the ultimate
meditation. Engaging author Sam Bleakley takes us on a soulful
journey across the tideline of his personal and philosophical
travels. Through lunar cycles and river surfing to the Taoism of
nature, he reveals an acute awareness of what the oceans can tell
us about our place in the natural world. Meditating on one of
nature' s greatest elements - its salty swells, flow and peaks - he
shares life lessons in mindfulness that will be relished by surfer
and non-surfer alike.
A lot of people are drawn to the sea, and for good reason - it's
the world's last wild and largely unspoilt wilderness. But to
properly enjoy the sea, and to do so safely, you must have the
skills, knowledge and confidence to plan thoroughly and stay one
step ahead of the game. This book is thoughtfully written to help
yachtsmen do just that. It's not another navigation textbook; it's
written by a mariner for other mariners. It's well-informed, easy
to read and honest about the author's triumphs and disasters over a
lifetime's navigating. He has a unique perspective having navigated
in many parts of the world from high up on the bridge of a warship,
close to the water in a cruising yacht and at depth in a submarine.
After his navy career he was Chief Executive of the Royal National
Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), often dealing with the consequences of
poor navigation. The author brings the subject to life in a book
that is designed to help yachtsmen refresh their knowledge of, and
their enthusiasm for, the timeless skills of navigation. It is
packed with hundreds of illustrations - colour photographs, charts,
diagrams and tables - making the text easy to understand. The book
is part of Fernhurst Books' Skipper's Library series of practical
books for the cruising sailor.

The first book to address the fears and hesitations of reluctant mates whose husbands have caught the cruising bug.
The adventure of sailing over the horizon is a widely held dream. Yet for every couple that goes cruising, thousands stay behind because only one partner is infected with this dream.
Dragged Aboard addresses only the interests of the reluctant partner: Is cruising safe? Healthy? Can I be comfortable? What will we eat? Can I be reached in an emergency? What can I take? With such essential questions honestly answered, it's possible to realize that you don't have to like sailing to get hooked on the cruising lifestyle. Don Casey carefully, cheerfully explains what life afloat is all about, from the mundane to the magical.

Robotic Sailing 2017. This book contains the peer-reviewed papers
presented at the 10th International Robotic Sailing Conference
which was organized in conjunction with the 10th World Robotic
Sailing Championship held in Horten, Norway the 4th-9th of
September 2017. The seven papers cover topics of interest for
autonomous robotic sailing which represents some of the most
challenging research and development areas. The book is divided
into two parts. The first part contains papers which focus on the
design of sails and software for the assessment and predication of
sailboat performance as well as software platforms and middleware
for sailboat competition and research. The second part includes
algorithms and strategies for navigation and collision avoidance on
local, mid- and long range. The differences in approach in the
included papers show that robotic sailing is still an emerging
cross-disciplinary science. The multitude of suggestions to the
specific problems of prediction and simulation of sailboats as well
as the challenges of route planning, anti-grounding and collision
avoidance are good indicators of science in its infancy. Hence, we
may expect the future to hold great advances for robotic sailing.
