establishing outsourcing relationships, maintaining and managing
the relationship, and finally governing outsourcing projects
successfully.
The book examines the status of the Anglophone Caribbean economy
and the options it faces as traditional preferential trade
arrangements begin to disappear. Two broad options are explored:
one is the transformation of primary exports into higher
value-added products and the other is a shift in the economic
structure toward tourism and other services. The book constructs a
model of a potential Caribbean economy, described as a "travel
economy." The travel economy is based on two enduring features of
Caribbean life--tourism and migration.--and it is meant to provide
a benchmark against which to gauge the evolution of the structure
of individual economies. The main contribution of this book is a
concise and methodological treatment of the issues of transition
and adjustment that the Caribbean faces in an increasingly
liberalized international trading system.
This book tackles the question of how tourism development and
suitable policies can be used to promote sustainable development in
Low-Density Territories (LDTs). The respective chapters, written by
prominent experts, identify the problems associated with LDTs;
highlight the comparative advantages of these territories with
regard to tourism; propose methodologies for assessing the impact
of tourism; and present case studies on the application of
sustainable policies in tourism. Given its scope, it will be
especially interesting for academics and researchers investigating
LDTs and sustainable tourism, and for policymakers interested in
developing these territories. LDTs represent an economic challenge,
especially because most of them are home to an increasingly ageing
population unable to pursue economic development. In these
territories, tourism is emerging as an excellent opportunity to
promote innovative dynamics, to lure investment, and to attract new
people. However, it is important to promote sustainable tourism,
which preserves the environment and communities' quality of life.

Focusing on the structure, processes, and behaviors for a board of
directors to ensure good governance, this book examines the
behavioral aspects of governance such as how to evaluate and
process information provided to the board, how to critically
question without de-motivating and how to provide guidance without
interfering with management.
This book highlights the Social Life Cycle Assessment (SLCA) of the
agri-sector for rice, sugarcane, and cassava in Thailand and the
food sector. It also presents a range of models, indices, impact
categories, etc. for SLCA that are currently being developed for
industrial applications. Though SLCA was introduced in 2010, it is
still relatively new compared to environmental life cycle
assessment (ELCA).
Filling a gap in the current literature, this book addresses the
social approach to the design and use of innovative business models
in the digital economy. It focuses on three areas that are of
increasing importance to businesses and industry today: social
issues and sustainability; digitization; and new economic business
models, specifically the sharing and circular economies. The
authors aim to solve current scientific concerns around the
conceptualization and operationalization of social business models,
addressing management intentions and the impact of these models on
society. Based on observation of social phenomena and the authors'
research and practical experience, the book highlights best
practices for designing and assessing social business models.
This book presents conscious business as a constantly expanding and
powerful approach to reinvent and shape organizations in a human
and beneficial manner. In particular it examines the core
characteristics, main drivers and challenges of conscious
businesses in Germany. The book offers a structured overview of the
current situation of the concept and outlines important issues that
need to be considered in order to make independent decisions. Four
case studies of successful conscious companies - differing in terms
of their size, industry, legal form and international orientation -
reveal concrete best practices and provide evidence for the
approach's ability to deliver business paradigms that are
simultaneously purposeful and profitable.

This edited book responds to the need for a better understanding of
how climate change affects North America and for the identification
of processes, methods and tools that may help countries and
communities to develop a more robust adaptive capacity. It
showcases successful examples of how to manage the social, economic
and environmental complexities posed by climate change. The book
attempts to synthesize various branches of resilience and
adaptation scholarship into a cohesive text that highlights field
research and best practices that are shaping policy and practice in
a wide geography from the coastal conditions of the Caribbean to
the thawing landscape of the Arctic Circle.
This book discusses how systems thinking and approaches can aid
management consultants in navigating the complexities of client
advisory in current realities. It thereby brings to the forefront
aspects of holism, flexibility and responsibility - the keys to
success in today's world. Management consultants are called in to
offer an independent expert view of an organisation/ a situation
and are expected to address some of the most pressing problems
businesses face. The client does not exist in a silo, but in a
complex environment that lies at the intersection of a range of
internal and external factors that are often unseen and
unpredictable. The organisation itself presents an alien territory
that the consultant is expected to acclimatise to within a very
short period of time, and come up with solutions that "insiders"
would not have been able to visualise. The book presents a range of
ideas, concepts and reference cases that are relevant and topical
for consultants in their daily work. It argues that systems
thinking allows holism and flexibility in management consulting -
while holism is about the ability to encompass the environmental
and organisational complexity, flexibility is about the ability to
think creatively and adopt different approaches to accommodate this
complexity. With commentaries, case studies, conceptual models and
perspectives that cut across multiple industries, sectors and
countries, this book is a valuable resource for academics and
professionals alike. The book's inner pages and its page on
Springer.com contain additional comments providing perspectives of
clients, industry experts and academia.

This book shows how specifically each goal of Sustainable
Development Goals could be incorporated in country wise
developmental programmes set to transform the world. It highlights
how a combination of initiatives on mitigation of disasters and a
robust progress could build a resilient society. The book discusses
multidimensional processes such as administrative, financial and
social challenges which can mitigate disasters and help in an
advancement towards SDG Goals. It highlights the embeddedness of
SDGs in disaster mitigation as they tend to be linked and
interdependent. By linking sustainable development to disaster
mitigation one gets a strong justification for investment into
preparedness as a guarantee or insurance against loss and damages
due to unforeseen disasters.

Here, expert authors delineate approaches that can support both
decision makers as well as their concerned populations in
overcoming unwarranted fears and in elaborating policies based on
scientific evidence. Four exemplary focus areas were chosen for
in-depth review, namely:- The scientific basis of risk management-
Risk management in the area of environmental and ecological policy-
Risk management in radiation medicine- Risk management in context
with digitalization and roboticsGeneral as well as specific
recommendations are summarized in a memorandum. Fundamental
thoughts on the topic are presented in the introductory part of the
book. The idea for and contents of the book were developed at a
workshop on "Sustainable Risk Management: How to manage risks in a
sensible and responsible manner?" held in Feldafing at Lake
Starnberg (Germany) on April 14 to 16, 2016. The book offers
important information and advice for scientists, entrepreneurs,
administrators and politicians.
This book discusses current challenges in Japan, focusing on the
nation's rapidly aging population and low birth rate, along with
persistent public bond issues with heavy interest payments, the
potential collapse of social security systems, and income
inequality, as well as the global picture. In turn, it examines the
accessibility of global fossil fuels and feasibility of large-scale
solar energy use. A new theory of money, interest, and capital is
put forward, together with a proposal for an alternative system of
international monetary cooperation, to promote a more sustainable
and equitable world. Specific topics discussed include * the
inverted population pyramid, due to the dramatic change in human
life spans and declining birth rates; * the rapidly shrinking
workforce, aging population, and declining GDP share sourced from
industry; * disproportionate debt expansion due to public bond
issues and coping with a persistent budget deficit; * the potential
collapse of social security systems combined with income
inequality; and * how to mitigate these bio-economic predicaments.
Global Energy Sources offers an essential guide for policymakers,
economists, researchers, and all those concerned with establishing
a sustainable and equitable society from both energy and monetary
perspectives. Further, it will be of interest to readers around the
world, as the lessons learned from Japan are crucial to other
developed societies that may eventually face the same types of
challenge.

This book tackles the ethical problems of the "Fourth Industrial
Revolution" (4IR) and offers readers an overview of the ethical
challenges connected to Artificial Intelligence (AI), encryption
and the finance industry. It specifically focuses on the situation
of females in these industries, from women lawyers, judges,
attorneys-at-law, investors and bankers, to portfolio managers,
solicitors and civil servants. As the 4IR is more than "just" a
technology-driven transformation, this book is a call to
policymakers and business leaders to harness new technologies in
order to create a more inclusive, human-centered future. It offers
many practical cases of proactive change agents, and offers
solutions to the ethical challenges in connection with implementing
revolutionary disruptive products that often eliminate the
intermediary. In addition, the book addresses sustainable finance
in startups. In this context, education, training, agility and
life-long learning in financial literacy are some of the key
solutions highlighted here. The respective contributors supply a
diverse range of perspectives, so as to promote a multi-stakeholder
approach.
International shipping is currently at a crossroads. The decision
of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in April 2018 to
adopt an Initial Strategy so as to achieve by 2050 a reduction of
at least 50% in maritime greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions vis-a-vis
2008 levels epitomizes the last among a series of recent
developments as regards sustainable shipping. It also sets the
scene on what may happen in the future. Even though many experts
and industry circles believe that the IMO decision is in line with
the COP21 climate change agreement in Paris in 2015, others
disagree, either on the ground that the target is not ambitious
enough, or on the ground that no clear pathway to reach the target
is currently visible. This book takes a cross-disciplinary view of
the various dimensions of the maritime transportation
sustainability problem. "Cross-disciplinary" means that a variety
of angles are used to examine the book topics, and these mainly
include the technological angle, the economics angle, the logistics
angle, and the environmental angle. The book reviews models that
can be used to evaluate decisions, policy alternatives and
trade-offs. For sustainable shipping, a spectrum of technical,
logistics-based and market based measures are being contemplated.
All may have important side-effects as regards the economics and
logistics of the maritime supply chain, including ports and
hinterland connections. The objective to attain an acceptable
environmental performance, while at the same time respecting
traditional economic performance criteria so that shipping remains
viable, is and is likely to be a central goal for both industry and
policy-makers in the years ahead. At the same time, policy
fragmentation is likely to create distortions of competition and
sub-optimal solutions. This book attempts to address these issues
and identify better solutions. Sustainable Shipping: A
Cross-Disciplinary View includes chapters that cover many relevant
topics. These include a general view of maritime transport
sustainability, green ship technologies, information and
communication technologies (ICTs) for sustainable shipping, green
tramp ship routing and scheduling, green liner network design and
speed optimization. Market based measures, oil pollution, ship
recycling, sulphur emissions, ballast water management, alternative
fuels and green ports are also covered. The book concludes by
discussing prospects for the future, with a focus on the IMO
Initial Strategy. "This book contains a unique wealth of
information on sustainable shipping. The knowledge it provides is
rigorous, complete, and well supported by statistics, technical
reports, and scientific references. The treatment of the various
topics is not only informative but also analytical and critical."
