Capitalising Economic Power in the US - Industrial Strategy in the Neoliberal Era (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original... Capitalising Economic Power in the US - Industrial Strategy in the Neoliberal Era (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2019)
Mattia Tassinari
R2,628 Discovery Miles 26 280 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines the American industrial strategy, from the late 70s to the present day, in what is now known as the 'neoliberal era'. The author illustrates the ways in which the protection and promotion of American companies and industries took place in the context of the international 'free market'. He provides clear evidence of how the economic power of the United States - wielded to influence the formal and informal institutions of the neoliberal order - has been used as a tool for enhancing its competitive advantage against other world economies.

Business Governance and Society - Analyzing Shifts, Conflicts, and Challenges (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st... Business Governance and Society - Analyzing Shifts, Conflicts, and Challenges (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2019)
Rajagopal, Ramesh Behl
R2,907 Discovery Miles 29 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume critically analyzes the convergence of technology, business practices, public policies, political ideologies, and societal values for improving business performance at the global-local paradigm. It also enriches knowledge on contemporary business strategies against conventional wisdom of managing companies today. Shifts in the global economic and political order have significantly affected the business patterns within developed, developing, and emerging markets. The reversal of political ideologies from liberal to protectionist business frameworks are disrupting the trade flows that were rooted in the international economy since the mid-twentieth century. The essays contemplate developing new visions and business perspectives to match with the changing political ideologies in emerging markets. This volume will serve as a valuable tool to readers looking for global market management strategies to generate cost-effective business models and create convergence with political and social values to drive better governance of businesses.

A Study of India's Textile Exports and Environmental Regulations (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed.... A Study of India's Textile Exports and Environmental Regulations (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2018)
K S Kavi Kumar
R2,873 Discovery Miles 28 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines the interplay between trade and the environment, with a focus on the Indian textile sector. While it is often claimed that developed countries' non-tariff trade measures adversely affect the trade prospects of developing countries, establishing that claim systematically is a challenging task. This book examines the dilemma on the basis of various approaches, including a primary survey of different stakeholders and the large-scale modelling of the economy-environment inter-linkages. The interplay between the costs involved in meeting environmental regulations and the potential price-premiums that the cleaner products would get in the international market is analysed in order to assess the future trade prospects for Indian textiles. In addition, the book provides a comprehensive overview of the present scenario of the Indian textile sector. Accordingly, it will be of great interest to researchers, policy makers and graduate students specializing in environmental economics, development economics and international economics.

The Story of Indian Manufacturing - Encounters with the Mughal and British Empires (1498 -1947) (Paperback, Softcover reprint... The Story of Indian Manufacturing - Encounters with the Mughal and British Empires (1498 -1947) (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2018)
Vijay K Seth
R3,611 Discovery Miles 36 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book discusses the role historical events played in determining the pattern of growth of Indian manufacturing. Two important historical events significantly influenced the course of Indian manufacturing from the 15th century AD. The first was the arrival of European merchants via sea route pioneered by Vasco-da-Gamma in 1498 and the other was the dawn of the Mughal Empire in 1526. The book explores how these two events provided the appropriate stimulus for the emergence of traditional flexible manufacturing in India and how they played a vital role in the pattern of growth of the Indian manufacturing: The Mughal Empire created an integrated economy of continental size whereas European trading companies expanded the commercial connectivity of the Indian economy and South East Asia. It further investigates how the circumstances created by the colonial administration, factor endowment and market conditions created the complex forms of manufacturing enterprises that India inherited at the time of independence. It is a valuable resource for students of history, economic history, business history and the history of technology.

Paradigm Shift in International Economic Law Rule-Making - TPP as a New Model for Trade Agreements? (Paperback, Softcover... Paradigm Shift in International Economic Law Rule-Making - TPP as a New Model for Trade Agreements? (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2017)
Julien Chaisse, Henry Gao, Chang-fa Lo
R4,419 Discovery Miles 44 190 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The TPP was negotiated among 12 economically diverse countries, including some most highly developed and rich countries (i.e., the United States, Japan, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Singapore), some newly industrialized countries (i.e., Mexico and Malaysia), and some less-developed countries (i.e., Peru, Chile, and Vietnam). A new paradigm created in this context is that countries with vastly different economic developments can actually agree on a set of very high standards to regulate their economic activities, to liberalize their trade, and to protect intellectual property and foreign investment. The contents of the TPP also reflect its status of being a "new paradigm" as the "21st-Century Trade Agreement" and being a pioneer in rule making in many key regulatory areas. These include not only the improved and enhanced rules on traditional issues already covered by the WTO , such as goods, services, and IP rights, but also the carefully designed rules in areas that have never been addressed in the WTO or comprehensively covered in other FTAs , such as state-owned enterprises, electronic commerce, and labor and environmental issues. Although the United States has withdrawn from the TPP, the remaining countries are still putting efforts into establishing a TPP without the United States or a TPP with China. Economically speaking, the current 11 parties account for about 20 % of the global economy. If such agreement is put into force, there will be significant implications for the region, for the multilateral system, and even for other FTAs. The book addresses the potential of the TPP to change the ways trade and investments are conducted and argues for its potential to be the start of an international trade/economic law revolution. The book elaborates the relationship between the TPP and other existing trade agreements such as the WTO and other FTAs and explains how the TPP is to deal with traditional and new issues. Taken together, the authors argue that the implications of the TPP go beyond its current membership. It is hoped that the book will make an important contribution to the field of international economic law.

Myanmar's Integration with the World - Challenges and Policy Options (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed.... Myanmar's Integration with the World - Challenges and Policy Options (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2017)
Prabir De, Ajitava Raychaudhuri
R3,119 Discovery Miles 31 190 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book comprehensively investigates the challenges to Myanmar's access to the global market. Myanmar is a late entrant in the global trade and investment scenario after years of isolation. However, it has large untapped potentials for trade and investment in minerals, agro and forest based industries, other labour intensive industries, services like tourism, IT, etc. Different chapters of the book explore the implication of democratic transition of Myanmar, the progress of Myanmar's industry and infrastructure, its international linkages and feasible options for integrating more in regional economic groups and also analyses how far Myanmar could exploit the global value chain. Although a number of reports have discussed sector specific prospects of Myanmar, this book is an authoritative work on these aspects for policy planners, academicians, researchers as well as potential investors.

Synchronized Factories - Latin America and the Caribbean in the Era of Global Value Chains (Paperback, 2014 ed.): Juan S. Blyde Synchronized Factories - Latin America and the Caribbean in the Era of Global Value Chains (Paperback, 2014 ed.)
Juan S. Blyde
R2,096 Discovery Miles 20 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The objective of this report is to examine the extent to which countries in Latin America and the Caribbean participate in global value chains and what are the drivers of such participation. Production processes have been increasingly fragmented worldwide. For example, the production of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner involves 43 suppliers located in 135 locations around the globe. There are many examples like the Dreamliner, from the 451 parts that go into the iPod to the less technologically intensive but still widespread multi-country production of a Barbie doll. All this reflects significant changes in the way world production is being reorganized across national borders. That is, for many goods, production has become a multi-country process in which different stages are carried out in specialized plants in different parts of the world. Countries which specialize in different stages of the production process are thus linked by these global value chains. For developing countries, a clear opportunity from the continuous international fragmentation of production arises in the form of participating in activities that were virtually not opened to them in the past. Therefore, the international fragmentation of production provides opportunities for trade diversification, an issue that can be of particular importance for Latin America and the Caribbean as the region's export base is in general highly concentrated in a few industries and particularly biased towards natural-resource intensive sectors. The aim is to identify whether there is policy space for implementing strategies that allow countries to improve their position in regional and global value chains.

European and Islamic Trade in the Early Ottoman State - The Merchants of Genoa and Turkey (Paperback, New ed): Kate Fleet European and Islamic Trade in the Early Ottoman State - The Merchants of Genoa and Turkey (Paperback, New ed)
Kate Fleet
R1,457 Discovery Miles 14 570 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

International trade was of great importance for the Ottomans in the construction of their empire. Kate Fleet's book examines the trade links which existed between European merchants and their Muslim counterparts from the beginnings of the Ottoman empire in 1300 to the fall of Constantinople in 1453. By using previously unexploited Latin and Turkish sources, and by focusing on the trading partnership between the Genoese and the Turks, she demonstrates how this interaction contributed to the economic development of the early Ottoman state and, indeed, to Ottoman territorial expansion. Where other studies have emphasized the military prowess of the early Ottoman state and its role as 'the infidel enemy', the book offers an insight into its economic aspirations and eventual integration into the economy of the Mediterranean basin. This is a readable, authoritative and innovative study which illuminates our understanding of an obscure period in early Ottoman history.

The Politics of Trade in Safavid Iran - Silk for Silver, 1600-1730 (Paperback, Revised): Rudolph P. Matthee The Politics of Trade in Safavid Iran - Silk for Silver, 1600-1730 (Paperback, Revised)
Rudolph P. Matthee
R1,419 R810 Discovery Miles 8 100 Save R609 (43%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Using a wide range of archival and written sources, Rudi Matthee considers the economic, social and political networks established between Iran, its neighbours and the world at large, through the prism of the late Safavid silk trade. In so doing, he demonstrates how silk, a resource crucial to state revenue and the only commodity to span Iran's entire economic activity, was integral to aspects of late Safavid society, including its approach to commerce, export routes and, importantly, to the political and economic problems which contributed to its collapse in the early 1700s. In a challenge to traditional scholarship, the author argues that despite the introduction of a maritime, western-dominated channel, Iran's traditional land-based silk export continued to expand right up to the end of the seventeenth century. The book makes a major theoretical contribution to the debates on the social and economic history of the pre-modern world.

Cash-in-Hand Work - The Underground Sector and the Hidden Economy of Favours (Paperback, 1st ed. 2004): C. Williams Cash-in-Hand Work - The Underground Sector and the Hidden Economy of Favours (Paperback, 1st ed. 2004)
C. Williams
R1,487 Discovery Miles 14 870 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Uncovering how cash-in-hand economies are composed of not only the underground sector (work akin to formal employment conducted for profit-motivated purposes), but also a hidden economy of favours more akin to mutual aid, this book displays the need to transcend conventional market-oriented readings of cash-in-hand work and radically rethink whether seeking its eradication through tougher regulations is always appropriate. It argues for a variegated policy approach that recognizes these two distinct forms of cash-in-hand work and which tailors policy accordingly.

The Brandy Trade under the Ancien Regime - Regional Specialisation in the Charente (Paperback, New Ed): L. M Cullen The Brandy Trade under the Ancien Regime - Regional Specialisation in the Charente (Paperback, New Ed)
L. M Cullen
R1,035 Discovery Miles 10 350 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This study of the brandy trade explores the origins, production and marketing of brandy from the Cognac region in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Professor Cullen shows that the brandy trade was based on a sophisticated regional economy, which, by 1720, had become a key component of French involvement in the modern international trading system. Notwithstanding competition from a surplus in other cereals and from foreign markets, regional specialization in the Charente was an indispensable element in ensuring the quality of stable output, and was recognized in the region's success in attracting foreign houses, such as Martell and Hennessy.

The Transition to a Colonial Economy - Weavers, Merchants and Kings in South India, 1720-1800 (Hardcover): Prasannan... The Transition to a Colonial Economy - Weavers, Merchants and Kings in South India, 1720-1800 (Hardcover)
Prasannan Parthasarathi
R2,729 Discovery Miles 27 290 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In a challenge to the widespread belief that poverty and poor living standards have been characteristic of India for centuries, Prasannan Parthasarathi demonstrates that, until the late eighteenth century, laboring groups in South India were in a powerful position, receiving incomes well above subsistence. It was with the rise of colonial rule, the author maintains, that the decline in their economic fortunes was initiated. This is a powerful revisionist statement on the role of Britain in India that will interest students of the region, and economic and colonial historians.

Global Electronic Commerce - A Policy Primer (Paperback, illustrated edition): Catherine Mann, Sue Eckert, Sarah Cleeland Knight Global Electronic Commerce - A Policy Primer (Paperback, illustrated edition)
Catherine Mann, Sue Eckert, Sarah Cleeland Knight
R691 Discovery Miles 6 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Electronic commerce is changing the way that businesses and consumers interact with each other; the products they create, buy, and sell; and the way that they communicate, learn, and become informed. How can policymakers position their countries and themselves to take advantage of this new environment? How should policymaking adjust to a more global, more networked, and more information-rich marketplace where relationships and jurisdictions between the governments, businesses, and citizens of different countries increasingly overlap? How can governments effectively harness rapidly changing technologies and partner with both domestic and foreign private sectors to reap the greatest benefits for their constituents?

This primer answers these questions using both general analysis and specific examples. It addresses in particular the needs of policymakers in emerging markets who must formulate and refine policies that affect e-commerce in areas ranging from telecommunications and finance to international trade and domestic distribution as well as taxation and privacy. Companies considering doing business in these economies also will find that the examples offer insights into the issues that policymakers face, the different policy approaches that they choose, and the market opportunities that result as more and more economies embrace global electronic commerce.

Merchant Enterprise in Britain - From the Industrial Revolution to World War I (Hardcover, New): Stanley Chapman Merchant Enterprise in Britain - From the Industrial Revolution to World War I (Hardcover, New)
Stanley Chapman
R2,321 Discovery Miles 23 210 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Studies of the British Industrial Revolution and of the Victorian period of economic and social development have until very recently concentrated on British industries and industrial regions, while commerce and finance, and particularly that of London, have been substantially neglected. This has distorted our view of the process of change because financial services and much trade continued to be centred on the metropolis, and the south-east region never lost its position at the top of the national league of wealth. This is a pioneer survey of the mercantile sector of the economy from the end of the eighteenth century to World War I. It complements Dr. Chapman's The Rise of Merchant Banking (1984), concentrating on the various ways in which British merchants responded to the unprecedented opportunities of the Industrial Revolution and the growth of the British Empire. The main conclusion is that industrial entrepreneurs contributed only briefly to merchant ventures, and that with limited success. Rather did the established merchant community evolve its own new forms of enterprise to meet the changing opportunities: the 'new frontier' merchant networks of the Atlantic economy, the international houses in continental trade, the agency houses in the Far East, and the home trade houses dominating the domestic market. These resilient organisations enabled the British merchant enterprise to survive longer and in greater strength than in other Western economies.
