R1,236 R961 Discovery Miles 9 610 Save R275 (22%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Are you working on a codebase where cost overruns, death marches, and heroic fights with legacy code monsters are the norm? Battle these adversaries with novel ways to identify and prioritize technical debt, based on behavioral data from how developers work with code. And that's just for starters. Because good code involves social design, as well as technical design, you can find surprising dependencies between people and code to resolve coordination bottlenecks among teams. Best of all, the techniques build on behavioral data that you already have: your version-control system. Join the fight for better code! Use statistics and data science to uncover both problematic code and the behavioral patterns of the developers who build your software. This combination gives you insights you can't get from the code alone. Use these insights to prioritize refactoring needs, measure their effect, find implicit dependencies between different modules, and automatically create knowledge maps of your system based on actual code contributions. In a radical, much-needed change from common practice, guide organizational decisions with objective data by measuring how well your development teams align with the software architecture. Discover a comprehensive set of practical analysis techniques based on version-control data, where each point is illustrated with a case study from a real-world codebase. Because the techniques are language neutral, you can apply them to your own code no matter what programming language you use. Guide organizational decisions with objective data by measuring how well your development teams align with the software architecture. Apply research findings from social psychology to software development, ensuring you get the tools you need to coach your organization towards better code. If you're an experienced programmer, software architect, or technical manager, you'll get a new perspective that will change how you work with code. What You Need: You don't have to install anything to follow along in the book. TThe case studies in the book use well-known open source projects hosted on GitHub. You'll use CodeScene, a free software analysis tool for open source projects, for the case studies. We also discuss alternative tooling options where they exist.

Crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, disasters, or violent conflict present numerous challenges for researchers. Faced with disruption, obstacles, and even danger to their own lives, researchers in times of crisis must adapt or redesign existing research methods in order to continue their work effectively. Including contributions on qualitative and digital research from Europe, Asia, Africa, Australasia, and the Americas, this volume explores the creative and thoughtful ways in which researchers have adapted methods and rethought relationships in response to challenges arising from crises. Their collective reflections, strategies, and practices highlight the importance of responsive, ethical, and creative research design and the need to develop methods for fostering mutual, reflexive, and healthy relationships in times of crisis.

Traces the interior, evolutionary movement of biblical moments and movements of Genesis, Exodus, Judgement, Incarnation and Apocalypse by meditating on speech and silence in the biblical text of the Old Testament, or Torah. This profoundly moving meditation by a Christian dialectical theologian finds a home in the classical academic literature of Judaism, by virtue of the author's emphasis on the search for words to express man's encounter with the living God. Jacob Neusner, Series Editor, in his new preface, states that, "Judaism in the Torah claims to possess these words." He considers Altizer's work to be a continuation of the legacy of Abraham Joshua Heschel. Originally published by Harper & Row in 1977, this edition contains a new introduction by the author.

Willmoore Kendall - Maverick of American Conservatives (Paperback): John A. Murley, John E. Alvis Willmoore Kendall - Maverick of American Conservatives (Paperback)
John A. Murley, John E. Alvis; Foreword by William F. Buckley; Contributions by John E. Alvis, George Anastaplo, …
R1,242 Discovery Miles 12 420 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Willmoore Kendall: Maverick of American Conservatives provides the first book-length study of a man long regarded as a founding father of American intellectual conservatism. This edited collection brings together a diverse range of perspectives on Kendall's life and work and places the post-World War II political theorist in the context of modern American conservatism. Far from providing a monolithic view of Kendall's thought, the contributions illuminate an unconventional, often contradictory, thinker. The book traces the development of Kendall's body of political thought from his early years in Oxford, through his work on John Locke, to the later speculation that produced The Basic Symbols of the American Political Tradition , and analyzes the influence of Leo Strauss on his later work. Including, for the first time in print, the complete correspondence between Kendall and Strauss that significantly shaped Kendall's later work, Willmoore Kendall is a vital contribution to American intellectual history.

The subjects of the essays range from evaluation of the play in economic terms to critical analysis of specific productions, to a look at the body of Miller's works.

The Official History of the Falklands Campaign, Volume 2 - War and Diplomacy (Paperback, Revised): Lawrence Freedman The Official History of the Falklands Campaign, Volume 2 - War and Diplomacy (Paperback, Revised)
Lawrence Freedman
R1,711 Discovery Miles 17 110 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In the second volume of his official history of the Falklands Campaign, Lawrence Freedman provides a detailed and authoritative account of one of the most extraordinary periods in recent British political history and a vivid portrayal of a government at war.

After the shock of the Argentine invasion of the Falklands in April 1982, Margaret Thatcher faced the crisis that came to define her premiership as she determined to recover the islands. The book covers all aspects of the campaign - economic and diplomatic as well as military - demonstrating the extent of the gamble that the government took.

There are important accounts of the tensions in relations with the United States, concerns among the military commanders about the risks they were expected to take, the problems of dealing with the media and the attempts to reach a negotiated settlement. This definitive account describes in dramatic detail events such as the sinking of the Belgrano, the Battle of Goose Green and the final push to Stanley. Special attention is also paid to the aftermath of the war, including the various enquiries, and the eventual restoration of diplomatic relations with Argentina.

This paperback edition has been updated, corrected and contains some new material.

Lawrence Freedman
R1,615 Discovery Miles 16 150 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Drawing on a vast range of previously classified government archives as well as interviews with key participants, this first volume of the official history of the Falklands Campaign is the most authoritative account of the origins of the 1982 war.

In the first chapters the author analyses the long history of the dispute between Argentina and Britain over the sovereignty of the Islands, the difficulties faced by successive governments in finding a way to reconcile the opposed interests of the Argentines and the islanders, and the constant struggle to keep the Islands viable. He subsequently gives a complete account of how what started as an apparently trivial incident over an illegal landing by scrap-metal merchants on the island of South Georgia turned into a major crisis. Thanks to his access to classified material, Sir Lawrence Freedman has been able to produce a detailed and authoritative analysis which extends the coverage given by the Franks Committee Report of 1983.

This volume is ultimately an extremely readable account of these events, charting the growing realisation within the British government of the seriousness of the situation, culminating in the Argentine invasion of the Falkland Islands at the start of April 1982.

The Birth of A Transfer Society (Paperback): Terry Lee Anderson, Peter J. Hill The Birth of A Transfer Society (Paperback)
Terry Lee Anderson, Peter J. Hill
R1,303 Discovery Miles 13 030 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The growth of transfers from miniscule to major proportion of the gross national product has resulted in a decreasing productivity, increasing allocation of resources in obtaining and maintaining transfers, as well as increasing the social tension over the legitimacy and allocation of transfers. The authors of this study trace the historical reasons for the rise of transfers, most specifically in the United States. They offer a detailed analysis of the impact of the entire constitution and its interpretation on economic activity. In their provocative conclusion they argue against the willing surrender of transfer privileges and offer in solution the suggestion that new constitutional provisions be drafted to limit the power of government to effect transfers and reestablish our economic health. For students of Economic History, Public Policy and American Government. Originally published in 1980 by the Hoover Institution Press.

Muffet McGraw; As told to Paul Gullifo
R491 Discovery Miles 4 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the shadows of the nation's most storied football program, Muffet McGraw has quietly built the Notre Dame women's basketball program into a national power. Arguably, women's basketball has been the university's most consistently successful varsity sport. Over the past 15 years, Irish women's basketball teams have made 12 post-season appearances including nine trips to the NCAA tournament. The team's rise to national prominence was underscored with a national championship in 2001. In short, the Notre Dame women's basketball prgram has been steadily built into a perennial national championship contender, and its architect for those 15 years has been Head Coach Muffet McGraw. McGraw has more than 300 victories at Notre Dame and a winning percentage of .729 with numerous awards to attest to McGraw's coaching success. Her honors in 2001 alone: Women's Basketball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year, Naismith's Women's College Coach of the Year, Associated Press' Coach of the Year, Sports Illustrated for Women's Coach of the Year, and Big East Conference Coach of the Year. Personal accolades aside, Coach McGraw works hard to define effective methods for her players that will not only mean success on the court-but will also translate to personal fulfillment in life. Accordingly, in Courting Success McGraw outlines her ingredients for success-on and off the court-by sharing stories of hard lessons learned, the value of finely tuned work ethic and discipline, experiences that motivate and inspire, and "key plays" to put into daily living practice.

Popular Newspapers, the Labour Party and British Politics (Hardcover): James Thomas Popular Newspapers, the Labour Party and British Politics (Hardcover)
James Thomas
R4,473 Discovery Miles 44 730 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

'IT'S THE SUN WOT WON IT', was the famous headline claim of Britain's most popular newspaper following the Conservative party's victory over Labour in the 1992 general election. The headline referred to a virulent press campaign against Neil Kinnock's Labour party, and dramatically highlighted one of the chief features of British politics during the twentieth century - the conflict between a socialist Labour party and a capitalist popular press. Labour's frequent complaints of the political and electoral unfairness of newspaper bias meant that some commentators considered that this dispute had a heritage as old as the party itself. Others, including the Labour leadership at the time, argued that despite past tensions, the 1992 election marked the culmination of an unprecedented campaign of vilification against the party.
Popular Newspapers, the Labour Party and British Politics assesses these competing claims, looking not only at 1992 but both back and forward to examine the continuities and changes in newspaper coverage of British politics and the Labour party over the twentieth century. The book explores whether the popular press has lived up to its claim of being a democratic 'fourth estate', or has merely, as Labour politicians have argued been a powerful 'fifth column' distorting the democratic process. Drawing on a range of previously unexamined sources this book offers the first original and comprehensive history of a fascinating aspect of British politics from Beaverbrook to Blair.

James Thomas is a lecturer at the Cardiff School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies at Cardiff University, and has published articles and essays exploring the relationship between thepopular press and British politics.

Warfighting and Disruptive Technologies - Disguising Innovation (Paperback): Terry Pierce Warfighting and Disruptive Technologies - Disguising Innovation (Paperback)
Terry Pierce
R1,313 Discovery Miles 13 130 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Occasionally, militaries during times of peace achieve major warfighting innovations. Terry Pierce calls these 'disruptive innovations'. The more common innovation phenomenon, however, has been that of integrating new technologies to help perform existing missions better and not change them radically. The author calls these 'sustaining innovations'. The central theme of this book is that senior leaders who have successfully managed disruptive innovations disguised them as sustaining in order to ensure their innovations survived.
The recent innovation history suggests two interesting questions. First, how can senior military leaders achieve a disruptive innovation when they are heavily engaged around the world and they are managing sustaining innovations? Second, what have been the external sources of disruptive (and sustaining) innovations?
This book is essential reading for professionals and students interested in national security, military history and strategic issues.

Interpreting China's Military Power - Doctrine Makes Readiness (Hardcover): Ka Po Ng Interpreting China's Military Power - Doctrine Makes Readiness (Hardcover)
Ka Po Ng
R4,634 Discovery Miles 46 340 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Although inter-state tensions have generally been easing after the Cold War, military power remains a dominant factor in Asian regional politics. As China, operating the world's largest army, grows stronger, there are ongoing debates over the implications for Asia's regional security.
This book argues that it is imperative to look beyond the empirical observations and conventional materialist reading of Chinese military development to understand its dynamics and directions in doctrinal terms and put it in a readiness context for evaluation.
Military doctrine has long been under-studied and is often treated as a subject separate from force development. But, as this study contends, this factor is necessary for interpreting the making and purposes of China's military power because it forms the intellectual foundation of military structural and hardware development. When loaded with political rhetoric, it also communicates to us the intended uses of the military power. The role of doctrine is reinforced in the context of military readiness, which defines what for and how the army is getting ready. Force development is evaluated in structural, operational and directional terms.
The importance of this analytical framework based on military doctrine and readiness is demonstrated in a survey of the evolution of Chinese military doctrine and force development. As the Chinese People's Liberation Army has continued to adjust its military structure and operation to follow the doctrinal lead, its switches between the doctrines of local war and total war have seen corresponding changes to the emphasis between operational and structural readiness.
