Rudolf Ahlswede; Edited by Alexander Ahlswede, Ingo Althöfer, Christian Deppe, Ulrich Tamm
R2,185 Discovery Miles 21 850 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The volume “Storing and Transmitting Data†is based on Rudolf Ahlswede's introductory course on "Information Theory I" and presents an introduction to Shannon Theory. Readers, familiar or unfamiliar with the technical intricacies of Information Theory, will benefit considerably from working through the book; especially Chapter VI with its lively comments and uncensored insider views from the world of science and research offers informative and revealing insights. This is the first of several volumes that will serve as a collected research documentation of Rudolf Ahlswede’s lectures on information theory. Each volume includes comments from an invited well-known expert. Holger Boche contributed his insights in the supplement of the present volume. Classical information processing concerns the main tasks of gaining knowledge, storage, transmitting and hiding data. The first task is the prime goal of Statistics. For the two next, Shannon presented an impressive mathematical theory called Information Theory, which he based on probabilistic models. The theory largely involves the concept of codes with small error probabilities in spite of noise in the transmission, which is modeled by channels. The lectures presented in this work are suitable for graduate students in Mathematics, and also in Theoretical Computer Science, Physics, and Electrical Engineering with background in basic Mathematics. The lectures can be used as the basis for courses or to supplement courses in many ways. Ph.D. students will also find research problems, often with conjectures, that offer potential subjects for a thesis. More advanced researchers may find the basis of entire research programs.

Compressed Sensing & Sparse Filtering (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2014): Avishy Y. Carmi, Lyudmila... Compressed Sensing & Sparse Filtering (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2014)
Avishy Y. Carmi, Lyudmila Mihaylova, Simon J. Godsill
R5,328 Discovery Miles 53 280 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is aimed at presenting concepts, methods and algorithms ableto cope with undersampled and limited data. One such trend that recently gained popularity and to some extent revolutionised signal processing is compressed sensing. Compressed sensing builds upon the observation that many signals in nature are nearly sparse (or compressible, as they are normally referred to) in some domain, and consequently they can be reconstructed to within high accuracy from far fewer observations than traditionally held to be necessary.  Apart from compressed sensing this book contains other related approaches. Each methodology has its own formalities for dealing with such problems. As an example, in the Bayesian approach, sparseness promoting priors such as Laplace and Cauchy are normally used for penalising improbable model variables, thus promoting low complexity solutions. Compressed sensing techniques and homotopy-type solutions, such as the LASSO, utilise l1-norm penalties for obtaining sparse solutions using fewer observations than conventionally needed. The book emphasizes on the role of sparsity as a machinery for promoting low complexity representations and likewise its connections to variable selection and dimensionality reduction in various engineering problems.  This book is intended for researchers, academics and practitioners with interest in various aspects and applications of sparse signal processing.

Energy Flow Theory of Nonlinear Dynamical Systems with Applications (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed.... Energy Flow Theory of Nonlinear Dynamical Systems with Applications (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015)
Jing Tang Xing
R3,441 Discovery Miles 34 410 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This monograph develops a generalised energy flow theory to investigate non-linear dynamical systems governed by ordinary differential equations in phase space and often met in various science and engineering fields. Important nonlinear phenomena such as, stabilities, periodical orbits, bifurcations and chaos are tack-led and the corresponding energy flow behaviors are revealed using the proposed energy flow approach. As examples, the common interested nonlinear dynamical systems, such as, Duffing’s oscillator, Van der Pol’s equation, Lorenz attractor, Rössler one and SD oscillator, etc, are discussed. This monograph lights a new energy flow research direction for nonlinear dynamics. A generalised Matlab code with User Manuel is provided for readers to conduct the energy flow analysis of their nonlinear dynamical systems. Throughout the monograph the author continuously returns to some examples in each chapter to illustrate the applications of the discussed theory and approaches. The book can be used as an undergraduate or graduate textbook or a comprehensive source for scientists, researchers and engineers, providing the statement of the art on energy flow or power flow theory and methods.

A Route to Chaos Using FPGAs - Volume I: Experimental Observations (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015):... A Route to Chaos Using FPGAs - Volume I: Experimental Observations (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015)
Bharathwaj Muthuswamy, Santo Banerjee
R2,005 Discovery Miles 20 050 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The purpose of this introductory book is to couple the teaching of chaotic circuit and systems theory with the use of field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). As such, it differs from other texts on chaos: first, it puts emphasis on combining theoretical methods, simulation tools and physical realization to help the reader gain an intuitive understanding of the properties of chaotic systems. Second, the "medium" used for physical realization is the FPGA. These devices are massively parallel architectures that can be configured to realize a variety of logic functions. Hence, FPGAs can be configured to emulate systems of differential equations. Nevertheless maximizing the capabilities of an FPGA requires the user to understand the underlying hardware and also FPGA design software. This is achieved by the third distinctive feature of this book: a lab component in each chapter. Here, readers are asked to experiment with computer simulations and FPGA designs, to further their understanding of concepts covered in the book. This text is intended for graduate students in science and engineering interested in exploring implementation of nonlinear dynamical (chaotic) systems on FPGAs.

Synchronization of Integral and Fractional Order Chaotic Systems - A Differential Algebraic and Differential Geometric Approach... Synchronization of Integral and Fractional Order Chaotic Systems - A Differential Algebraic and Differential Geometric Approach With Selected Applications in Real-Time (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015)
Rafael Martínez-Guerra, Claudia A. Pérez-Pinacho, Gian Carlo Gómez-Cortés
R2,068 Discovery Miles 20 680 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book provides a general overview of several concepts of synchronization and brings together related approaches to secure communication in chaotic systems. This is achieved using a combination of analytic, algebraic, geometrical and asymptotical methods to tackle the dynamical feedback stabilization problem. In particular, differential-geometric and algebraic differential concepts reveal important structural properties of chaotic systems and serve as guide for the construction of design procedures for a wide variety of chaotic systems. The basic differential algebraic and geometric concepts are presented in the first few chapters in a novel way as design tools, together with selected experimental studies demonstrating their importance. The subsequent chapters treat recent applications. Written for graduate students in applied physical sciences, systems engineers, and applied mathematicians interested in synchronization of chaotic systems and in secure communications, this self-contained text requires only basic knowledge of integer ordinary and fractional ordinary differential equations. Design applications are illustrated with the help of several physical models of practical interest.

Econophysics and Data Driven Modelling of Market Dynamics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015):... Econophysics and Data Driven Modelling of Market Dynamics (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015)
Frédéric Abergel, Hideaki Aoyama, Bikas K. Chakrabarti, Anirban Chakraborti, Asim Ghosh
R2,333 Discovery Miles 23 330 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book presents the works and research findings of physicists, economists, mathematicians, statisticians, and financial engineers who have undertaken data-driven modelling of market dynamics and other empirical studies in the field of Econophysics. During recent decades, the financial market landscape has changed dramatically with the deregulation of markets and the growing complexity of products. The ever-increasing speed and decreasing costs of computational power and networks have led to the emergence of huge databases. The availability of these data should permit the development of models that are better founded empirically, and econophysicists have accordingly been advocating that one should rely primarily on the empirical observations in order to construct models and validate them. The recent turmoil in financial markets and the 2008 crash appear to offer a strong rationale for new models and approaches. The Econophysics community accordingly has an important future role to play in market modelling. The Econophys-Kolkata VIII conference proceedings are devoted to the presentation of many such modelling efforts and address recent developments. A number of leading researchers from across the globe report on their recent work, comment on the latest issues, and review the contemporary literature.

S-Variable Approach to LMI-Based Robust Control (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015): Yoshio Ebihara,... S-Variable Approach to LMI-Based Robust Control (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015)
Yoshio Ebihara, Dimitri Peaucelle, Denis Arzelier
R3,303 Discovery Miles 33 030 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book shows how the use of S-variables (SVs) in enhancing the range of problems that can be addressed with the already-versatile linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach to control can, in many cases, be put on a more unified, methodical footing. Beginning with the fundamentals of the SV approach, the text shows how the basic idea can be used for each problem (and when it should not be employed at all). The specific adaptations of the method necessitated by each problem are also detailed. The problems dealt with in the book have the common traits that: analytic closed-form solutions are not available; and LMIs can be applied to produce numerical solutions with a certain amount of conservatism. Typical examples are robustness analysis of linear systems affected by parametric uncertainties and the synthesis of a linear controller satisfying multiple, often  conflicting, design specifications. For problems in which LMI methods produce conservative results, the SV approach is shown to achieve greater accuracy. The authors emphasize the simplicity and easy comprehensibility of the SV approach and show how it can be implemented in programs without difficulty so that its power becomes readily apparent. The S-variable Approach to LMI-based Robust Control is a useful reference for academic control researchers, applied mathematicians and graduate students interested in LMI methods and convex optimization and will also be of considerable assistance to practising control engineers faced with problems of conservatism in their systems and controllers.

Zhong Ying, Low Sui Pheng
R3,176 Discovery Miles 31 760 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This unique book that deals with project communication management in complex environments, taking a leaf from China’s experience with a major earthquake in Sichuan, would be a timely contribution to fill this lacuna. Readers would be able to understand how companies and organizations that are unprepared for crisis management would react to their detriment. The lessons provided in this book are the only one of its kind to highlight the lessons for companies and organizations to prepare themselves for successful project communication management through the complexity-informed framework. Although the book is written by two building professionals, the concepts and lessons presented are generic and equally applicable for businesses outside of the construction industry; for example, for airports, resorts, hotels, shipyards, etc.

Roger P. Roess, Elena S. Prassas
R7,097 Discovery Miles 70 970 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Since 1950, the Highway Capacity Manual has been a standard used in the planning, design, analysis, and operation of virtually any highway traffic facility in the United States. It has also been widely used abroad, and has spurred the development of similar manuals in other countries. The twin concepts of capacity and level of service have been developed in the manual, and methodologies have been presented that allow highway traffic facilities to be designed on a common basis, and allow for the analysis of operational quality under various traffic demand scenarios. The manual also addresses related pedestrian, bicycle, and transit issues.   This book details the fundamental development of the concepts of capacity and level of service, and of the specific methodologies developed to describe them over a wide range of facility types. The book is comprised of two volumes. Volume 1 (this book) focuses on the development of basic principles, and their application to uninterrupted flow facilities: freeways, multilane highways, and two-lane highways. Weaving, merging, and diverging segments on freeways and multilane highways are also discussed in detail. Volume 2 focuses on interrupted flow facilities: signalized and unsignalized intersections, urban streets and arterials. It is intended to help users of the manual understand how concepts, approaches, and specific methodologies were developed, and to understand the underlying principles that each embodies. It is also intended to act as a basic reference for current and future researchers who will continue to develop new and improved capacity analysis methodologies for many years to come.

Semigroup Methods for Evolution Equations on Networks (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2014): Delio Mugnolo Semigroup Methods for Evolution Equations on Networks (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2014)
Delio Mugnolo
R2,164 Discovery Miles 21 640 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This concise text is based on a series of lectures held only a few years ago and originally intended as an introduction to known results on linear hyperbolic and parabolic equations. Yet the topic of differential equations on graphs, ramified spaces, and more general network-like objects has recently gained significant momentum and, well beyond the confines of mathematics, there is a lively interdisciplinary discourse on all aspects of so-called complex networks. Such network-like structures can be found in virtually all branches of science, engineering and the humanities, and future research thus calls for solid theoretical foundations. This book is specifically devoted to the study of evolution equations – i.e., of time-dependent differential equations such as the heat equation, the wave equation, or the Schrödinger equation (quantum graphs) – bearing in mind that the majority of the literature in the last ten years on the subject of differential equations of graphs has been devoted to elliptic equations and related spectral problems. Moreover, for tackling the most general settings - e.g. encoded in the transmission conditions in the network nodes - one classical and elegant tool is that of operator semigroups. This book is simultaneously a very concise introduction to this theory and a handbook on its applications to differential equations on networks. With a more interdisciplinary readership in mind, full proofs of mathematical statements have been frequently omitted in favor of keeping the text as concise, fluid and self-contained as possible. In addition, a brief chapter devoted to the field of neurodynamics of the brain cortex provides a concrete link to ongoing applied research.

Liberating the Mind - Overcoming Sociocentric Thought and Egocentric Tendencies (Hardcover): Linda Elder Liberating the Mind - Overcoming Sociocentric Thought and Egocentric Tendencies (Hardcover)
Linda Elder; Foreword by Gerald Nosich
R1,240 Discovery Miles 12 400 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Throughout history, thinkers from every part of society have been crippled by the notion that a person's own views and the views of the groups with which that person associates are supremely and exclusively right. Hand in hand, these dangerous tendencies pose the greatest threat to any progress towards rational society. Critical thinking leader Linda Elder reveals sociocentric and egocentric thinking as foundational obstacles to thinking. Dissecting the very core of how humans learn, think, and chose to act, The Liberated Mind shows us how to free ourselves from dysfunctional patterns and achieve truly rational thought. This instant intellectual classic points towards the salvation of human reason. Through the cultivation of critical societies, we can follow the example of Socrates and live the examined life, even in times of upheaval and doubt.

Theory of Conditional Games (Hardcover, New): Wynn C Stirling Theory of Conditional Games (Hardcover, New)
Wynn C Stirling
R3,199 Discovery Miles 31 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Game theory explains how to make good choices when different decision makers have conflicting interests. The classical approach assumes that decision makers are committed to making the best choices for themselves regardless of the effect on others, but such an approach is less appropriate when cooperation, compromise and negotiation are important. This book describes conditional games, a form of game theory that accommodates multiple stakeholder decision-making scenarios where cooperation and negotiation are significant issues and where notions of concordant group behavior are important. Using classical binary preference relations as a point of departure, the book extends the concept of a preference ordering that permits stakeholders to modulate their preferences as functions of the preferences of others. As these conditional preferences propagate through a group of decision makers, they create social bonds that lead to notions of group concordance. This book is intended for all students and researchers of decision theory and game theory.

The Stories We Tell - Math, Race, Bias, and Opportunity (Hardcover): Valerie N Faulkner, Patricia L. Marshall, Lee V. Stiff The Stories We Tell - Math, Race, Bias, and Opportunity (Hardcover)
Valerie N Faulkner, Patricia L. Marshall, Lee V. Stiff
R2,368 Discovery Miles 23 680 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Stories We Tell: Math, Race, Bias, & Opportunity positions educators as professional decision-makers whose every day choices are deeply consequential. After exploring topics ranging from the early identification of talent, the use of demographic characteristics to make academic decisions, and the problematic casting of a ‘gap’ in mathematical performance as about the students themselves, the book explores how professional decision making, and a more precise use of data, can impact mathematical performance outcomes. With gentle precision, the book analyzes the patterns of practice in place as educators sort children according to perceived needs. Through case studies, the authors reconfigure the mathematics achievement gap as being about opportunity provided or denied at both the classroom and systemic levels. The book has implications for school personnel as well as others curious about how opportunity impacts outcomes and how data is (or is not) used to make decisions about children. Educators who challenge themselves to engage with the possibility of bias, and then face the stories we tell ourselves about the race/talent development/student merit relationship, will have the opportunity to write a powerful and equitable story going forward.

Corpus Linguistics and Translation Tools for Digital Humanities - Research Methods and Applications (Hardcover): Stefania M.... Corpus Linguistics and Translation Tools for Digital Humanities - Research Methods and Applications (Hardcover)
Stefania M. Maci, Michele Sala
R3,659 Discovery Miles 36 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Presenting the digital humanities as both a domain of practice and as a set of methodological approaches to be applied to corpus linguistics and translation, chapters in this volume provide a novel and original framework to triangulate research for pursuing both scientific and educational goals within the digital humanities. They also highlight more broadly the importance of data triangulation in corpus linguistics and translation studies. Putting forward practical applications for digging into data, this book is a detailed examination of how to integrate quantitative and qualitative approaches through case studies, sample analysis and practical examples.

The Modern Bestiary - A Curated Collection of Wondrous Creatures (Paperback): Joanna Bagniewska The Modern Bestiary - A Curated Collection of Wondrous Creatures (Paperback)
Joanna Bagniewska; Illustrated by Jennifer N. R. Smith
R359 R322 Discovery Miles 3 220 Save R37 (10%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

From the familiar to the improbable, the gross to the endearing, The Modern Bestiary is a compendium of curious creatures. It includes both animals that have made headlines and those you've probably never heard of, such as skin-eating caecilians, harp sponges, or zombie worms - also known as bone-eating snot flowers. Arranged by elements (Earth, Water, Air), The Modern Bestiary contains well-known species told from new, unexpected angles (rats that drive cars; fish that communicate by passing wind), as well as stranger and lesser-known creatures, including carnivorous mice that howl at the moon, cross-dressing cuttlefish, and antechinuses - small marsupials that literally mate themselves to death. Finally, there are the 'aliens on Earth' - the incredible, the surreal, the magical - such as tardigrades, tongue-eating lice and immortal jellyfish, creatures so astonishing that they make unicorns look rather commonplace. Written by a zoologist with a flair for storytelling, this is a fascinating celebration of the animal kingdom.
