Repeatability - Build Enduring Businesses for a World of Constant Change (Hardcover): Chris Zook, James Allen Repeatability - Build Enduring Businesses for a World of Constant Change (Hardcover)
Chris Zook, James Allen
R633 R588 Discovery Miles 5 880 Save R45 (7%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An argument for simplicity from the bestselling authors of Profit from the Core Is radical reinvention the key to winning in today's fast-paced world? Not judging by the results of some of the world's best-performing companies. In Repeatability, Chris Zook and James Allen--leaders of Bain & Company's influential Strategy practice--warn that complexity is a silent killer of profitable growth. Successful companies endure by maintaining simplicity at their core. They don't stray from, or regularly discard, their business model in pursuit of radical renovation. Instead, they build a "repeatable business model" that produces continuous improvement and allows them to rapidly adapt to change without succumbing to complexity. Based on a multiyear study of more than two hundred companies, the book stresses the value of repeatability in business, showing how the "big idea" today is really made up of a series of successful smaller ideas driven by a simple and repeatable business model. Zook and Allen show how some of the world's best-known firms combine a core differentiation model with speed, adaptability, and simplicity to land them at the top for long periods of time. These firms include: Apple, Danaher, DaVita, IKEA, Nike, Olam, Tetra Pak, Vanguard, and others. CEOs, senior executives, managers, and investors all need to read this book. It's the new blueprint for reaching the top--and staying there.

Doing Agile Right - Transformation Without Chaos (Hardcover): Darrell Rigby, Sarah Elk, Steven Berez Doing Agile Right - Transformation Without Chaos (Hardcover)
Darrell Rigby, Sarah Elk, Steven Berez
R607 Discovery Miles 6 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Agile has the power to transform work--but only if it's implemented the right way. For decades business leaders have been painfully aware of a huge chasm: They aspire to create nimble, flexible enterprises. But their day-to-day reality is silos, sluggish processes, and stalled innovation. Today, agile is hailed as the essential bridge across this chasm, with the potential to transform a company and catapult it to the head of the pack. Not so fast. In this clear-eyed, indispensable book, Bain & Company thought leader Darrell Rigby and his colleagues Sarah Elk and Steve Berez provide a much-needed reality check. They dispel the myths and misconceptions that have accompanied agile's rise to prominence--the idea that it can reshape an organization all at once, for instance, or that it should be used in every function and for all types of work. They illustrate that agile teams can indeed be powerful, making people's jobs more rewarding and turbocharging innovation, but such results are possible only if the method is fully understood and implemented the right way. The key, they argue, is balance. Every organization must optimize and tightly control some of its operations, and at the same time innovate. Agile, done well, enables vigorous innovation without sacrificing the efficiency and reliability essential to traditional operations. The authors break down how agile really works, show what not to do, and explain the crucial importance of scaling agile properly in order to reap its full benefit. They then lay out a road map for leading the transition to a truly agile enterprise. Agile isn't a goal in itself; it's a means to becoming a high-performance operation. Doing Agile Right is a must-have guide for any company trying to make the transition--or trying to sustain high agility.

What started out as a personal interest in the mechanisms that shape our views of the world and a passion for understanding has grown into a phenomenal compilation of once-in-a-lifetime conversations. Christine Kane
R578 R533 Discovery Miles 5 330 Save R45 (8%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Can you succeed in business when your strength is more about sensitivity than swagger? If you're moved by meaning, more than manipulation? In other words: Can you succeed while still being you? Christine Kane is living proof that the answer is yes. Far too many of us have swallowed the notion that business owners have to be a certain way to be successful—strategy-obsessed, data-driven, and relentlessly aggressive. Bookstore shelves are lined with guides for entrepreneurs that urge them to "Crush it! "10X It!" or "Unf**k it!" Those who aren't crushers or unf**kers of anything are left wondering if something's wrong with them. Like, maybe they're just not cut out for business. A former songwriter and performer, and then founder of Uplevel YOU—a multi-million-dollar business coaching company—Christine Kane shows a new class of entrepreneurs another way. It's time to connect, not crush. In The Soul-Sourced Entrepreneur, Kane shares the insights that have helped thousands find success without losing themselves. In these pages, readers will find a practical plan to:    • Toss out ineffective, old-school goal-setting models.    • Reframe your intuition and sensitivity as valuable assets, not as flaws to hide.    • Examine old patterns for clues as to what's been holding you back.    • Clean up the spaces and distractions draining your energy and power.    • Learn to confidently trust in your own wisdom.    • Break free from fear-based decision-making that plagues most businesses. Throughout the book, you'll hear stories from other soul-sourced entrepreneurs, who employ their own reliable, unique set of best practices based as much in intuition and self-awareness as on specific skills and strategies. Forget business as usual. Your business is personal, and in this new era, authenticity, creativity, and sensitivity are what set businesses apart. The Soul-Sourced Entrepreneur is your unconventional plan to build the business of your dreams, and being wildly successful by being you.

The Essential Advantage - How to Win with a Capabilities-Driven Strategy (Hardcover): Paul Leinwand, Cesare R. Mainardi The Essential Advantage - How to Win with a Capabilities-Driven Strategy (Hardcover)
Paul Leinwand, Cesare R. Mainardi
R648 Discovery Miles 6 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Conventional wisdom on strategy is no longer a reliable guide. In Essential Advantage, Booz & Company's Cesare Mainardi and Paul Leinwand maintain that success in any market accrues to firms with coherence: a tight match between their strategic direction and the capabilities that make them unique. Achieving this clarity takes a sharpness of focus that only exceptional companies have mastered. This book helps you identify your firm's blend of strategic direction and distinctive capabilities that give it the "right to win" in its chosen markets. Based on extensive research and filled with company examples--including Amazon.com, Johnson & Johnson, Tata Sons, and Procter & Gamble--Essential Advantage helps you construct a coherent company in which the pieces reinforce each other instead of working at cross-purposes. The authors reveal: * Why you should focus on a system of a few aligned capabilities * How to identify the "way to play" in your market * How to design a strategy for well-modulated growth * How to align a portfolio of businesses behind your capability system * How your strategy clarifies growth, costs, and people decisions Few companies achieve a capability-driven "right to win" in their market. This book helps you position your firm to be among them.

Crossing Borders - Sharing Journeys - Effective Capacity Building with Immigrant and Refugee Groups (Hardcover): Sarah Gleason Crossing Borders - Sharing Journeys - Effective Capacity Building with Immigrant and Refugee Groups (Hardcover)
Sarah Gleason
R523 Discovery Miles 5 230 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A growing number of nonprofit organizations have been created by immigrants and refugees to serve their communities in North America. These immigrant- and refugee-led organizations (IRLOs) work to provide services and meet a variety of needs, while at the same time building the infrastructure of these communities. Through a grant from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation Innovation Fund, Fieldstone Alliance initiated the two-year project in January 2004. The goal of Nexus was to enhance the knowledge and skills of capacity builders across North America in working with immigrant- and refugee-led organizations. The Nexus Project had two main components: research on capacity building with IRLOs and formation of a peer learning community among those who build the capacity of these organizations. This report draws three broad lessons for the capacity building field, with implications for the funding community, IRLOs, and capacity builders: effective capacity building takes time, which requires resources; more immigrant and refugee capacity builders are needed; and capacity builders need continuous learning and development. The Introduction describes the formation of the Nexus Project, its goals, and its working definitions. Chapter 1 describes the factors that result in effective capacity building with immigrant- and refugee-led organizations. Chapter 2 presents case studies from each of the Nexus partners. Each case study illustrates a practice used by Nexus partners when working with IRLOs. Chapter 3 details lessons Nexus partners learned through the course of this project. It further states implications of these lessons for those who fund work with IRLOs, for IRLO leaders, and for capacity building providers. The Appendices include a summary of IRLO research conducted by Wilder Research Center specifically for Nexus; a bibliography; and descriptions of the organizations and individuals who contributed to this report.

From Management Goal-Setting to Organizational Results - Transforming Strategies Into Action (Hardcover): Keith W. Curtis From Management Goal-Setting to Organizational Results - Transforming Strategies Into Action (Hardcover)
Keith W. Curtis
R2,799 R2,533 Discovery Miles 25 330 Save R266 (10%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Shows how managers in any organizational setting can improve their own and their teams' results through a unique, step-by-step approach to setting goals and then--most importantly--by putting them into action. Curtis lays bare the linkages between organizational culture, philosophy, ethics, and the management of information and change, and shows how they contribute to goal setting and achievement. Throughout Curtis argues that deciding what to do may be an essential component of goal setting, but the real challenge is in getting things done, and it is here that so many goal-setting systems fail.

Part I begins by establishing the foundation for the remainder of the book. It addresses the managerial philosophy underlying goal setting. The theory of goal setting is covered in Part II. Studies are reviewed that show that organizations, teams, and individuals that set clear, challenging goals produce better results than those who do not. The next part begins by addressing goal setting from an organizational perspective. Team goal setting follows. Techniques for individual goal setting are discussed in Part V. Part VI pulls organizational, team, and individual goal setting together by examining the ways information must be managed in a goal-oriented setting. Part VII, Change and Goal Setting, provides the techniques necessary to implement the goal-setting philosophy in a rapidly changing world. The book concludes with an examination of the ultimate purpose of management, to produce positive results.

Can Blockchain Solve the Hold-up Problem in Contracts? (Paperback, New Ed): Richard Holden, Anup Malani Can Blockchain Solve the Hold-up Problem in Contracts? (Paperback, New Ed)
Richard Holden, Anup Malani
R558 Discovery Miles 5 580 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

A vexing problem in contract law is modification. Two parties sign a contract but before they fully perform, they modify the contract. Should courts enforce the modified agreement? A private remedy is for the parties to write a contract that is robust to hold-up or that makes the facts relevant to modification verifiable. Provisions accomplishing these ends are renegotiation-design and revelation mechanisms. But implementing them requires commitment power. Conventional contract technologies to ensure commitment - liquidated damages - are disfavored by courts and themselves subject to renegotiation. Smart contracts written on blockchain ledgers offer a solution. We explain the basic economics and legal relevance of these technologies, and we argue that they can implement liquidated damages without courts. We address the hurdles courts may impose to use of smart contracts on blockchain and show that sophisticated parties' ex ante commitment to them may lead courts to allow their use as pre-commitment devices.

Hi, I'm Lisa, and I want to give the word 'budget' a makeover! For most people, the very thought of budgeting makes them want to run a mile. It suggests restriction, going without and only buying the cheapest of the cheap. But at its best, budgeting can mean making smart decisions, planning your spending carefully and having plenty left over for treats. Growing up, I absorbed so many toxic ideas that when I became an adult, I started modelling unhealthy financial behaviours myself, living paycheck to paycheck with little regard for saving. During the December 2021 lockdown, I came across the phenomenon of 'cash-stuffing' on TikTok, where you withdraw your spending money weekly or monthly and divvy it up into sections of a binder. With nothing to lose, and knowing I needed to change my habits, I ordered my binder and started portioning out my notes. And less than a year later, more than 160,000 of you are on this journey with me! I want to help each and every one of you to get on top of your spending and feel more confident with money. In this book I will: - share my personal journey with you, to show how important the way we talk about and behave with money is - explore how to put together a budget that is realistic for you and your family - break down the cash-stuffing method in detail to arm you with all the tools you need to get started So what are you waiting for? Dive in and open up that binder, because it's time to BUDGET HAPPY. READERS LOVE BUDGET HAPPY 'It will get you on the right track to help with money goals' ***** 'A great guide into how to get started with budgeting' ***** 'Hands down the best budget book I have read' *****

This book is the first one that comprehensively discusses cyberspace sovereignty in China, reflecting China’s clear attitude in the global Internet governance: respecting every nation’s right to independently choose a development path, cyber management modes and Internet public policies and to participate in the international cyberspace governance on an equal footing. At present, the concept of cyberspace sovereignty is still very strange to many people, so it needs to be thoroughly analyzed. This book will not only help scientific and technical workers in the field of cyberspace security, law researchers and the public understand the development of cyberspace sovereignty at home and abroad, but also serve as reference basis for the relevant decision-making and management departments in their work.

Customher Experience - The Importance of Tailoring Your Brand Experience to the Female Consumer (Hardcover): Katie Mares Customher Experience - The Importance of Tailoring Your Brand Experience to the Female Consumer (Hardcover)
Katie Mares
R607 Discovery Miles 6 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Although the female movement is interwoven into our social world and people preach “girl power,†brand experience expert Katie Mares has seen that this mindset hasn’t penetrated business branding or the experience businesses provide to women. Very few businesses focus on elevating “interaction†so that a brand experience includes a personal connection with the consumer and addresses their genuine interests and needs. This branding disconnect is a problem not only for female consumers but also for businesses that lose potential sales and women’s loyalty. CustomHer Experience provides businesses with the insight, guidance, and tools to • better understand the female consumer, • transform the transactional service a woman currently receives into the alluring, interactional experience she craves, • adjust their approach when interacting with customers, and • ignite a spark in their teams and companies. CustomHer Experience sends the clear message that true power comes when businesses focus on providing a brand and consumer experience that women—the world’s most influential consumers—can’t live without. When businesses start doing that—and doing it well—they can cultivate trust, build loyalty, earn referrals, and make top-line sales, and their female customers won’t want to go anywhere else. Katie Mares’s book is for anyone in business who wants to completely upend their industry

Strategy for Sustainability - A Business Manifesto (Hardcover): Adam Werbach Strategy for Sustainability - A Business Manifesto (Hardcover)
Adam Werbach
R759 Discovery Miles 7 590 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The definitive work on business strategy for sustainability by the most authoritative voice in the conversation.
More than ever before, consumers, employees, and investors share a common purpose and a passion for companies that do well by doing good. So any strategy without sustainability at its core is just plain irresponsible - bad for business, bad for shareholders, bad for the environment. These challenges represent unprecedented opportunities for big brands - such as Clorox, Dell, Toyota, Procter & Gamble, Nike, and Wal-Mart - that are implementing "integral," rather than tangential, strategies for sustainability. What these companies are doing illuminates the book's practical framework for change, which involves engaging employees, using transparency as a business tool, and reaping the rewards of a networked organizational structure.
Leave your quaint notions of corporate social responsibility and environmentalism behind. Werbach is starting a whole new dialogue around sustainability of enterprise and life as we know it in organizations and individuals. Sustainability is now a true "competitive" strategic advantage, and building it into the core of your business is the only means to ensure that your company - and your world - will survive.

This book won the 2017 NCA Applied Communication Division Distinguished Edited Book Award The second volume of Volunteering and Communication seeks to build upon the agenda set in motion by the first volume, which demonstrated the breadth of research being conducted on volunteers. The focus of this second volume is on the important issues related to volunteering in international and intercultural contexts. The chapters present empirical studies of volunteering divided into three sections. The first section includes six studies of the experiences of volunteers from a variety of countries including Thailand, South Korea, New Zealand, Australia, and Canada. The second section includes studies of volunteers from the United States in other countries in Asia, Africa, and South America. The final section includes two studies of volunteers serving recent immigrants to their home country. This volume provides a unique focus by providing a more nuanced examination than the first volume did of some of the unique differences of volunteering in international and intercultural contexts. It is hoped the two books will stimulate additional research on volunteers.

The Emotionally Intelligent Leader brings together three of Goleman's bestselling HBR articles. In "What Makes a Leader?" Goleman explores research that found that truly effective leaders are distinguished by high levels of self-awareness and sharp social skills. In "The Focused Leader," Goleman explains neuroscience research that proves that "being focused" is more than filtering out distractions while concentrating on one thing. In "Leadership That Gets Results," Goleman draws on research to outline six distinct leadership styles, each one springing from different components of emotional intelligence. Together, these three articles guide leaders to recognize the direct ties between EI and measurable business results.

R2,807 R2,541 Discovery Miles 25 410 Save R266 (9%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Sperlich examines the ideological foundations of the socialist regime of the former German Democratic Republic. He provides a detailed analysis of the nature of the GDR's legitimating ideology and of the reasons why the ideology ultimately failed to legitimate the regime. The study uses primary source documents extensively as well as the little existing secondary literature.

This is part of Sperlich's larger project dealing with the government, society, economy, political participation, and administration of the law and the system of courts of the GDR. This definitive treatment of the GDR provides the background essential to an understanding of all communist systems of the twentieth century. As such, it is vital reading for scholars, students, and other researchers seeking to understand the rise and ultimate collapse of communist systems and, in particular, the decline of the German Democratic Republic.
