Look Up! Images in the Classroom (Hardcover): Gwendolyn J. Cooke Look Up! Images in the Classroom (Hardcover)
Gwendolyn J. Cooke
R541 R453 Discovery Miles 4 530 Save R88 (16%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Too often, the children of the poor do not perceive highly accomplished men and women as realistic role models for themselves. By examining profiles of African American elected officials and other role models in the curriculum presented in Look Up Images in the Classroom, students may be encouraged to enlarge their visions and embrace the fact that anything the mind can conceive and believe can be achieved.Author Gwendolyn J. Cooke shares the details of Look Up , a motivational intervention strategy designed to instill pride and foster high academic achievement and socially responsible behavior. It accentuates the positive outcomes of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the civil rights movement. The program exposes economically disadvantaged African American children to appropriate role models through photographic images and selected biographical information of elected officials at each level of government.Lesson plans, hands-on activities, and coordinating website references are included to enhance the students' learning experiences to show that success is possible through hard work, perseverance, creativity, and clear planning.

Glocalising Teaching English as an International Language - New Perspectives for Teaching and Teacher Education in Germany... Glocalising Teaching English as an International Language - New Perspectives for Teaching and Teacher Education in Germany (Hardcover)
Marcus Callies, Stefanie Hehner, Philipp Meer, Michael Westphal
R3,888 Discovery Miles 38 880 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The worldwide spread, diversification, and globalization of the English language in the course of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries has significant implications for English Language Teaching and teacher education. We are currently witnessing a paradigm shift towards Teaching English as an International Language (TEIL) that aims to promote multilingualism and awareness of the diversity of Englishes, increase exposure to this diversity, embrace multiculturalism, and foster cross-cultural awareness. Numerous initiatives that embrace TEIL can be observed around the world, but ELT and teacher education in Germany (and other European countries) appear to be largely unaffected by this development, with standard British and American English and the monolingual native speaker (including the corresponding cultural norms) still being very much at the center of attention. The present volume addresses this gap and is the first of its kind to showcase recent initiatives that aim at introducing TEIL into ELT and teacher education in Germany, but which have applicability and impact for other countries with comparable education systems and 'traditional' ELT practices in the Expanding Circle. The chapters in this book provide a balanced mix of conceptual, empirical, and practical studies and offer the perspectives of the many stakeholders involved in various settings of English language education whose voices have not often been heard, i.e., students, university lecturers, trainee teachers, teacher educators, and in-service teachers. It therefore adds significantly to the limited amount of previous work on TEIL in Germany and bridges the gap between theory and practice that will not only be relevant for researchers, educators, and practitioners in English language education in Germany but other educational settings that are still unaffected by the shift towards TEIL.

Sameera Ahmed, Maha Bashri; Leticia Anderson, Sigal Barak-Brandes, Debora Freud, …
R954 Discovery Miles 9 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Minority Women and Western Media: Challenging Representations and Articulating New Voices presents research examining media portrayals of women from Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America. It provides qualitative and quantitative findings of how women are stereotyped and misrepresented not only because of their gender but also their race, religion, ability, physical attributes, and political status. Whilst their voices are frequently excluded, marginalized and misrepresented, the chapters in this volume show how minority women are creating and articulating new discourses and challenging assumptions and expectations about themselves. This book provides insights into how women are represented in different media, including newspapers, television shows, films, and online platforms. Scholars of media studies, women's studies, and communication will find this book particularly useful.

Nick Pilcher, Kendall Richards
R3,249 Discovery Miles 32 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is about supporting students in Higher Education using language, and specifically using a combination of written text based linguistic approaches alongside and with other non-text related languages. The authors call this a beyond-text subject based approach and argue that this can more effectively help students. The book first outlines and describes a 'paradigm of linguistics' that sees support as being only possible through linguistics written text approaches. It then describes how the authors have found through their own research studies that such approaches do not go far enough to best support students. They offer alternatives and justify them theoretically and empirically, and also suggest ways in which others can use similar approaches to best support students in HE. This book will be of interest to practitioners, students, teachers and researchers in the fields of Applied Linguistics, TESOL, English Medium Instruction (EMI), EAP and language education policy.

Analysing English-Arabic Machine Translation - Google Translate, Microsoft Translator and Sakhr (Hardcover): Zakaryia Almahasees Analysing English-Arabic Machine Translation - Google Translate, Microsoft Translator and Sakhr (Hardcover)
Zakaryia Almahasees
R3,886 Discovery Miles 38 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Machine Translation (MT) has become widely used throughout the world as a medium of communication between those who live in different countries and speak different languages. However, translation between distant languages constitutes a challenge for machines. Therefore, translation evaluation is poised to play a significant role in the process of designing and developing effective MT systems. This book evaluates three prominent MT systems, including Google Translate, Microsoft Translator, and Sakhr, each of which provides translation between English and Arabic. In the book Almahasees scrutinizes the capacity of the three systems in dealing with translation between English and Arabic in a large corpus taken from various domains, including the United Nation (UN), the World Health Organization (WHO), the Arab League, Petra News Agency reports, and two literary texts: The Old Man and the Sea and The Prophet. The evaluation covers holistic analysis to assess the output of the three systems in terms of Translation Automation User Society (TAUS) adequacy and fluency scales. The text also looks at error analysis to evaluate the systems' output in terms of orthography, lexis, grammar, and semantics at the entire-text level and in terms of lexis, grammar, and semantics at the collocation level. The research findings contained within this volume provide important feedback about the capabilities of the three MT systems with respect to English<>Arabic translation and paves the way for further research on such an important topic. This book will be of interest to scholars and students of translation studies and translation technology.

Competency-Based Teacher Education for English as a Foreign Language - Theory, Research, and Practice (Hardcover): Amber Yayin... Competency-Based Teacher Education for English as a Foreign Language - Theory, Research, and Practice (Hardcover)
Amber Yayin Wang
R3,886 Discovery Miles 38 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Providing a series of chapters, written by teacher educators in three continents, this edited volume explores the concepts, challenges, possibilities, and implementations of competency-based instruction for developing English competencies in English as a foreign language (EFL) contexts. Recent trends in education have emphasized the need to develop competencies that connect learning with real-life performances. This need has brought about a massive increase in the number of studies and scholarly works devoted to research into competency-based education. However, for teachers and learners of EFL, it is challenging to develop competencies for using a language that does not seem to connect with their real-life scenarios. The chapters apply the concept of competency-based instruction in different EFL contexts and are structured around three themes: Theory: current thoughts on theories of competency-based education Research: empirical research on competency-based teacher education Practice: integrating competency-based instruction into teacher education This book offers examples of competency-based EFL teacher education through both research and practical applications. In addition to the innovation in competency approaches, the inclusion of language learning in virtual environments offers a valuable resource for scholars, educators, researchers, and all those concerned with current and future education.

Verb-governed infinitival complementation in the recent history of English (Hardcover, New edition): Sofia Bemposta-Rivas Verb-governed infinitival complementation in the recent history of English (Hardcover, New edition)
Sofia Bemposta-Rivas
R2,273 Discovery Miles 22 730 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Verb-dependent non-finite complementation and, in particular, to- and bare-infinitive complement clauses have been the subject of extensive investigation and debate. The aim of this monograph is to contribute to the existing literature by modelling the variation in relation to a selection of verbs that govern to- and bare-infinite complements in the recent history of American and British English. Using methodologies provided by corpus linguistics and multivariate analyses, this book attempts to account for the forces that make certain verbs show a preference for either to-infinitive or bare-infinitive complementation from Middle English onwards, and to provide a comprehensive description of the factors that influence the choice of infinitival. Specifically, this monograph deals with morphological, syntactic and semantic/pragmatic variation between to- and bare-infinitive complementation in English, governed by, specifically, dare, need and help.

Chen Shen
R3,879 Discovery Miles 38 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Chinese language, the first language spoken and used by the largest population in the world, has witnessed a significant global increase. Chinese as a Second Language (CSL) has thus received unprecedented attention, and teaching and learning of CSL have transcended the national boundary. This book reports a case study of training teachers of CSL in Australia with a significant implication to the western English-speaking countries such as Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the USA. The book is unique in several ways. On a theoretical level, the book analyses knowledge-based and competence-based teacher education, provides an in-depth examination of post-method pedagogy and deconstructs traditional aspects of second language teacher education, making a case for the new concept of "three dimensions". On a practical level, the Australian-based case study employs qualitative methods to gather the feedback from teacher educators, teacher trainees and students who are undergoing CSL training, and further reports on studies on CSL teaching practicum in local schools and abroad. Training Teachers of Chinese in Australia is a book for established scholars, researchers, educators, and research higher degree students who are interested in teacher education, second and foreign language education and Chinese as a second language (CSL).
