TESOL and the Cult of Speed in the Age of Neoliberal Mobility (Paperback): Osman Barnawi TESOL and the Cult of Speed in the Age of Neoliberal Mobility (Paperback)
Osman Barnawi
R1,325 Discovery Miles 13 250 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

TESOL and the Cult of Speed in the Age of Neoliberal Mobility argues that because the nexus between TESOL and the cult of speed in an age of increased neoliberal mobility has not yet been explicitly unpacked, discussed, identified and theorized, the implications of this socio-economic phenomenon for TESOL policies, curricula, pedagogies and practices have been overlooked. Through the presentation of several qualitative case studies, the book illustrates the social dynamics of speed and its key aspects (i.e., the materiality and the politics of time) in different TESOL contexts, including Saudi Arabia, the USA and Canada. The aim in presenting these diverse case studies was to craft a collection of responses, which, when put together, could offer new insights into the TESOL academic community. The book examines the ways in which the cult of speed has been envisioned, celebrated, negotiated with, enacted and justified by the various actors within the contemporary field of TESOL. It also investigates the new language teaching practices and forms the cult of speed in TESOL has generated and is generating. TESOL and the Cult of Speed in the Age of Neoliberal Mobility will be of interest to TESOL/applied linguistics educators, students, policy makers, administrators, employers and the wider community, and it is hoped will give them ideas about how to deal with today's culture of fast movement in the globalized higher education landscape.

Norman Berdichevsky
R1,464 R933 Discovery Miles 9 330 Save R531 (36%) Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book examines the many changes that occurred in the transition to Modern Hebrew to acquaint new students of the language with its role as a model for other national revivals, how it overcame many obstacles to become a spoken vernacular. It deals primarily with the social and political use of the language and does not cover literature. It is the epic story of Ben-Yehuda's vision of a Modern Hebrew that eventually came to animate a large part of the Jewish world, gave new confidence and pride to Jewish youth during the most difficult period of modern history and infused Zionism with a dynamic cultural content. It exams the dilemmas facing the language due to the fact that Israelis and Jews in the Diaspora ""don't speak the same language"" while Israeli Arabs and Jews do.

Case Studies in Biocultural Diversity from Southeast Asia - Traditional Ecological Calendars, Folk Medicine and Folk Names... Case Studies in Biocultural Diversity from Southeast Asia - Traditional Ecological Calendars, Folk Medicine and Folk Names (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
F. Merlin Franco, Magne Knudsen, Noor Hasharina Hassan
R4,602 Discovery Miles 46 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This open access book demonstrates the linkages between local languages, traditional knowledge, and biodiversity at the landscape level in Asia, providing a fresh approach to discussions on Asia's biocultural diversity. The book carries forward earlier analyses but importantly focuses on 'traditional ecological calendars,' 'folk medicine,' and 'folk names' in the context of the vital importance of maintaining biological, cultural, and linguistic diversity. It does this by addressing a range of cases and issues in relation to Southeast Asia: Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and North-East India. The several chapters demonstrate the ways in which the various forms of knowledge of the environment and its categorizations are important in areas such as landscape and resource management and conservation. They also demonstrate that environmental knowledge and the practical skills which accompany it are not necessarily widely shared. This book sends important messages to those who care about the sustainability of our environment, the maintenance of its biocultural diversity, or at least the maintenance of what remains of it because much has changed. This interdisciplinary collection draws from a wide range of disciplines and is of appeal to students and scholars in anthropology, environmental studies, geography, biodiversity, and linguistics.

Language Socialization in Chinese Diasporas - Indexicality of Confucian Ideologies in Family Talk (Hardcover): Hsin-Fu Chiu Language Socialization in Chinese Diasporas - Indexicality of Confucian Ideologies in Family Talk (Hardcover)
Hsin-Fu Chiu
R4,564 Discovery Miles 45 640 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The monograph provides ethnographically informed analyses of indigenous kin interactions in three Chinese diasporic households in the county of Los Angeles, California, U.S.A. Drawing upon the approach that regards talk as a form of social practice, the book demonstrates different ways in which kin relationships are indigenously orchestrated by foreign Chinese parents and their American-born children. Micro-analytically, social actions of membership categorization, attribution, deference, compliance, commands, and story-telling that unfold in kin interactions are foregrounded as key language devices to discuss ways in which epistemic asymmetry, power hierarchy, and harmony in kin relations are constructed or deconstructed in Chinese diasporic social lives. By way of illustration, the monograph, macro-analytically, speaks to the cultural stereotype of Chinese immigrant/foreign parents' style of parenting when they pass on the traditional Confucian ideologies in kin interaction. This book can be a useful reference textbook for graduate courses that address the dynamic intricacy among language, culture, and society.

Beyond Words - Pictures, Parables, Paradoxes (Hardcover, New edition): Andras Benedek, Kristof Nyiri Beyond Words - Pictures, Parables, Paradoxes (Hardcover, New edition)
Andras Benedek, Kristof Nyiri
R1,659 Discovery Miles 16 590 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Human thinking depends not only on words but also on visual imagery. Visual argumentation directly exploits the logic of the pictorial, while verbal arguments, too, draw on figurative language, and thus ultimately on images. In the centuries of handwritten documents and the printed book, our educational culture has been a predominantly verbal one. Today the challenge of the pictorial is explicit and conspicuous. In the digital world, we are experiencing an unprecedented wealth of images, animations and videos. But how should visual content be combined with traditional texts? This volume strives to present a broad humanities background showing how going beyond the word was always an issue in, and by now has become an inevitable challenge to, pedagogy and philosophy.

Second Language Prosody and Computer Modeling (Hardcover): Okim Kang, David O. Johnson, Alyssa Kermad Second Language Prosody and Computer Modeling (Hardcover)
Okim Kang, David O. Johnson, Alyssa Kermad
R4,561 Discovery Miles 45 610 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume presents an interdisciplinary approach to the study of second language prosody and computer modeling. It addresses the importance of prosody's role in communication, bridging the gap between applied linguistics and computer science. The book illustrates the growing importance of the relationship between automated speech recognition systems and language learning assessment in light of new technologies and showcases how the study of prosody in this context in particular can offer innovative insights into the computerized process of natural discourse. The book offers detailed accounts of different methods of analysis and computer models used and demonstrates how these models can be applied to L2 discourse analysis toward predicting real-world language use. Kang, Johnson, and Kermad also use these frameworks as a jumping-off point from which to propose new models of second language prosody and future directions for prosodic computer modeling more generally. Making the case for the use of naturalistic data for real-world applications in empirical research, this volume will foster interdisciplinary dialogues across students and researchers in applied linguistics, speech communication, speech science, and computer engineering.

Composing Legacies - Testimonial Rhetoric in Nineteenth-Century Composition (Hardcover, New edition): Christopher Carter,... Composing Legacies - Testimonial Rhetoric in Nineteenth-Century Composition (Hardcover, New edition)
Christopher Carter, Russel K. Durst
R2,007 Discovery Miles 20 070 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In 2015, Professor Emerita Lucille M. Schultz donated to the University of Cincinnati her set of composition materials gathered from fifteen libraries and collections around the country. With 350 entries ranging from 1785 to 1916, the collection includes picture books for early primary schools, grammar textbooks, student writing, and advanced rhetoric textbooks for undergraduates. The documents afford a thrilling glimpse into nineteenth-century ways of thinking and teaching, highlighting practices we would today identify as prewriting, collaborative invention, freewriting, and object-oriented pedagogy. Composing Legacies relates these pedagogies to expressions of social class, nationalism, and public engagement that run throughout the Victorian era and the Gilded Age. Early chapters show how writing and grammar handbooks aimed to reproduce social hierarchies; later ones show how textbook authors aimed to mitigate lecture-style pedagogy with attention to student backgrounds, personal interests, economic aspirations, and presumed audiences. Often, those authors demonstrated a pronounced interest in national unity, but not without exception. Little-known Confederate textbooks took the ideology of unity to be a form of Northern aggression, promoting the maintenance of state and local traditions through their classroom exercises and sample passages. Composition scholars who see the nineteenth-century as a period of skills-and-drills teaching, devoid of explicit political concern, will find surprises in the archival texts' testimonies about national crises and civic participation. Those scholars will also find that the "social turn" in writing and rhetoric, however recent as a historical framework, has been underway for more than two hundred years.

Observing Norm, Observing Usage - Lexis in Dictionaries and the Media (English, French, Spanish, Paperback, New edition):... Observing Norm, Observing Usage - Lexis in Dictionaries and the Media (English, French, Spanish, Paperback, New edition)
Alessandra Molino, Serenella Zanotti
R2,849 Discovery Miles 28 490 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This volume includes a collection of studies on the interplay between norm and usage in lexis, which is explored by looking at both dictionaries and the media. The title features the polysemous verb to observe, which is used both in the sense of "investigating" use/usage and in that of "respecting" norms. This thematic area is analysed from a synchronic perspective focusing predominantly on the lexis of four European languages, namely English, French, Italian and Spanish, although other languages are occasionally referred to (e.g. Catalan and Danish). The volume comprises nineteen chapters, which provide a wide-ranging, but deeply focused overview of the complex and challenging interrelation between sites and processes of norm formation and the recontextualization, reconfiguration and re-creation of those norms. The book is structured in four thematic sections, which focus on the norm-setting role of dictionaries, the importance of authentic language use in recent lexicographic products, the impact of the Web on language usage as well as on the processes of norm creation and diffusion, and the impact of mass-mediated communication on lexis. The volume contains contributions in English, French, Italian and Spanish.

Szymon Wrobel
R1,656 Discovery Miles 16 560 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book is a collection of essays, weaving together cognitive psychology, psycho-linguistics, developmental psychology, modern philosophy and behavioural sciences. It raises the question: how does grammar relate to our remarkable ability to cooperate for future needs? The author investigates the interconnections between the mechanisms governing cooperation and reciprocal altruism on the one hand and the capacity to generate an infinite range of expressions from a finite set of syntactically structured elements on the other. Based on these premises, the specific character of cognitive explanations, possible architectures of mind, non-formal grammar and tacit knowledge are explored. Furthermore the author deals with the role of conceptual representations in explaining grammar, the modular structure of mind and the evolutionary origins of human language ability and moral authority.

Lin Sophie Teng
R3,622 Discovery Miles 36 220 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This monograph is to investigate practical applications and contributions of self-regulated learning (SRL) to second/foreign language (L2) writing from sociocognitive and sociocultural perspectives. It showcases a comprehensive and updated review of conceptual and methodological issues of SRL and the state-of-the-art research on its applications to L2 learning and teaching. This volume further elaborates the design and results of a large-scale project which conducts observational and intervention studies investigating SRL strategies in L2 writing. This book reveals that a cross-disciplinary understanding of SRL strategies plays a crucial role in advancing theoretical functions of SRL and in extending its applications to L2 education in general, and L2 writing in particular. This book makes significant contributions to developing and validating new conceptual frameworks and tools for evaluating multidimensional structures of SRL strategies and self-efficacy in L2 writing; elucidating the interplay of personal, behavioral, environmental and psychological factors with SRL strategies and writing performance; and presenting an effective self-regulation instructional model for nurturing L2 learners' motivation and confidence to strategize, reflect and succeed in writing. Teng has established herself as one of the prominent scholars in the discussion of self-regulated learning strategies. Her contribution to the fields of L2 writing and strategic learning are undeniable. This monograph is an excellent showing of how her endeavors to bring established theories from educational psychology to applied writing research have progressed over a number of methodologically rigorous studies. It should be required reading for anyone with an interest in cultivating strategic writers not only in the Chinese context but worldwide. Nathan Thomas, UCL Institute of Education
