TESOL and the Cult of Speed in the Age of Neoliberal Mobility argues that because the nexus between TESOL and the cult of speed in an age of increased neoliberal mobility has not yet been explicitly unpacked, discussed, identified and theorized, the implications of this socio-economic phenomenon for TESOL policies, curricula, pedagogies and practices have been overlooked. Through the presentation of several qualitative case studies, the book illustrates the social dynamics of speed and its key aspects (i.e., the materiality and the politics of time) in different TESOL contexts, including Saudi Arabia, the USA and Canada. The aim in presenting these diverse case studies was to craft a collection of responses, which, when put together, could offer new insights into the TESOL academic community. The book examines the ways in which the cult of speed has been envisioned, celebrated, negotiated with, enacted and justified by the various actors within the contemporary field of TESOL. Second Language Teacher Prosody focuses on the prosodic characteristics of input in L2 Spanish classrooms. The monograph provides ethnographically informed analyses of indigenous kin interactions in three Chinese diasporic households in the county of Los Angeles, California, U.S.A. Drawing upon the approach that regards talk as a form of social practice, the book demonstrates different ways in which kin relationships are indigenously orchestrated by foreign Chinese parents and their American-born children. Micro-analytically, social actions of membership categorization, attribution, deference, compliance, commands, and story-telling that unfold in kin interactions are foregrounded as key language devices to discuss ways in which epistemic asymmetry, power hierarchy, and harmony in kin relations are constructed or deconstructed in Chinese diasporic social lives. By way of illustration, the monograph, macro-analytically, speaks to the cultural stereotype of Chinese immigrant/foreign parents' style of parenting when they pass on the traditional Confucian ideologies in kin interaction. This book can be a useful reference textbook for graduate courses that address the dynamic intricacy among language, culture, and society.

Human thinking depends not only on words but also on visual imagery. Visual argumentation directly exploits the logic of the pictorial, while verbal arguments, too, draw on figurative language, and thus ultimately on images. In the centuries of handwritten documents and the printed book, our educational culture has been a predominantly verbal one. Today the challenge of the pictorial is explicit and conspicuous. In the digital world, we are experiencing an unprecedented wealth of images, animations and videos. But how should visual content be combined with traditional texts? This volume strives to present a broad humanities background showing how going beyond the word was always an issue in, and by now has become an inevitable challenge to, pedagogy and philosophy.

This volume presents an interdisciplinary approach to the study of second language prosody and computer modeling. It addresses the importance of prosody's role in communication, bridging the gap between applied linguistics and computer science. In 2015, Professor Emerita Lucille M. Schultz donated to the University of Cincinnati her set of composition materials gathered from fifteen libraries and collections around the country. With 350 entries ranging from 1785 to 1916, the collection includes picture books for early primary schools, grammar textbooks, student writing, and advanced rhetoric textbooks for undergraduates. The documents afford a thrilling glimpse into nineteenth-century ways of thinking and teaching, highlighting practices we would today identify as prewriting, collaborative invention, freewriting, and object-oriented pedagogy. Composing Legacies relates these pedagogies to expressions of social class, nationalism, and public engagement that run throughout the Victorian era and the Gilded Age. Early chapters show how writing and grammar handbooks aimed to reproduce social hierarchies; later ones show how textbook authors aimed to mitigate lecture-style pedagogy with attention to student backgrounds, personal interests, economic aspirations, and presumed audiences. Often, those authors demonstrated a pronounced interest in national unity, but not without exception. Little-known Confederate textbooks took the ideology of unity to be a form of Northern aggression, promoting the maintenance of state and local traditions through their classroom exercises and sample passages. Composition scholars who see the nineteenth-century as a period of skills-and-drills teaching, devoid of explicit political concern, will find surprises in the archival texts' testimonies about national crises and civic participation. Those scholars will also find that the "social turn" in writing and rhetoric, however recent as a historical framework, has been underway for more than two hundred years.

This volume includes a collection of studies on the interplay between norm and usage in lexis, which is explored by looking at both dictionaries and the media. The title features the polysemous verb to observe, which is used both in the sense of "investigating" use/usage and in that of "respecting" norms. This monograph is to investigate practical applications and contributions of self-regulated learning (SRL) to second/foreign language (L2) writing from sociocognitive and sociocultural perspectives. It showcases a comprehensive and updated review of conceptual and methodological issues of SRL and the state-of-the-art research on its applications to L2 learning and teaching. This volume further elaborates the design and results of a large-scale project which conducts observational and intervention studies investigating SRL strategies in L2 writing. This book reveals that a cross-disciplinary understanding of SRL strategies plays a crucial role in advancing theoretical functions of SRL and in extending its applications to L2 education in general, and L2 writing in particular.
