The Experiential Library - Transforming Academic and Research Libraries through the Power of Experiential Learning (Paperback):... The Experiential Library - Transforming Academic and Research Libraries through the Power of Experiential Learning (Paperback)
Pete McDonnell
R1,454 Discovery Miles 14 540 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Experiential Library: Transforming Academic and Research Libraries through the Power of Experiential Learning features contributions-in a relatively conversational, practical, and "how-to" format-from various academic libraries across broad educational levels that have implemented experiential learning programs, services, or resources to enhance the learning and development of both students and library employees. As academic libraries and academic librarians are seeking ways to transform themselves and create collaborative synergies within and without their institutions, this timely book suggests exciting ways to integrate experiential learning into the library's offerings. Ranging from integrated service learning and Information Literacy instruction that "takes the class out of the classroom," to unique experiential approaches to programming like Course Exhibits and the Human Library, the book is a one-stop-shop for libraries looking to expand their repertoire. It will also help them create connections between experiential learning and their institutions' missions and contributions to student success, by grounding these programs and services on a sure methodological footing. Librarians and educators wishing to learn more about the connections between experiential learning/experiential education and academic libraries would benefit from the advice from authors in this book.

Academic Libraries and Toxic Leadership (Paperback): Alma Ortega Academic Libraries and Toxic Leadership (Paperback)
Alma Ortega
R1,445 Discovery Miles 14 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Academic Libraries and Toxic Leadership examines a phenomenon that has yet to be seriously explored. While other so-called feminized professions, such as nursing, have been studied for their tendency to create toxic leadership environments, thus far academic librarianship has not. This book focuses on how to identify a toxic leader in an academic library setting, how to address toxic leadership, and how to work toward eradicating it from the organization. In addition, it discusses which steps can be used to prevent libraries from hiring toxic leaders.

Unobtrusive Evaluation of Reference Service and Individual Responsibility - The Canadian Experience (Hardcover): Juris Dilevko Unobtrusive Evaluation of Reference Service and Individual Responsibility - The Canadian Experience (Hardcover)
Juris Dilevko
R3,061 Discovery Miles 30 610 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Many reference librarians have been highly critical about unobtrusive evaluation studies. But can their opposition be justified? Or is it just a way to detract attention from serious shortcomings in reference service? How can government documents reference service, and reference service in general, be improved? Do librarians have enough general and subject-specific knowledge to provide informed and intelligent answers to reference questions? Would any business or non-profit organization be satisfied with the traditional 55 percent efficacy rate in reference service revealed by unobtrusive evaluation studies?

Long a controversial topic in the specialized world of reference librarianship, unobtrusive evaluation is nevertheless a useful tool in gauging the degree to which reference librarians are effectively performing their jobs. Based on a nationwide study of government documents reference service in Canada, this book examines the broad philosophical implications of negative attitudes to unobtrusive evaluation studies within libraries. It also discusses what really happens when librarians make referrals to external sources. Drawing on the insights of such library educators as Margaret Hutchins, S. R. Ranganathan, and James Wyer, it also suggests overlooked ways that may help reference librarians deliver better reference service. Finally, it argues that such proposals as certification and recertification of reference librarians need to be seriously considered if librarians do not willingly take personal responsibility for improving their own knowledge levels.

Beyond Mentoring - A Guide for Librarians and Information Professionals (Paperback, UK ed.): Dawn Lowe-Wincentsen Beyond Mentoring - A Guide for Librarians and Information Professionals (Paperback, UK ed.)
Dawn Lowe-Wincentsen
R1,446 Discovery Miles 14 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The book considers many aspects of mentoring, various programs, and their successes and failures, going beyond the usual types of mentoring by looking at newer models. An example of the cohort model from the American Library Association Emerging Leader model is included as a case study. In addition, another case study on the Sunshine State leadership Institute provides a toolkit for building your own program. The final section of the book offers perspectives and tools that people can use in designing their own programs.

Urgent Archives - Enacting Liberatory Memory Work (Paperback): Michelle Caswell Urgent Archives - Enacting Liberatory Memory Work (Paperback)
Michelle Caswell
R1,285 Discovery Miles 12 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Urgent Archives argues that archivists can and should do more to disrupt white supremacy and hetero-patriarchy beyond the standard liberal archival solutions of more diverse collecting and more inclusive description. Grounded in the emerging field of critical archival studies, this book uncovers how dominant western archival theories and practices are oppressive by design, while looking toward the the radical politics of community archives to envision new liberatory theories and practices. Based on more than a decade of ethnography at community archives sites including the South Asian American Digital Archive (SAADA), the book explores how members of minoritized communities activate records to build solidarities across and within communities, trouble linear progress narratives, and disrupt cycles of oppression. Caswell explores the temporal, representational, and material aspects of liberatory memory work, arguing that archival disruptions in time and space should be neither about the past nor the future, but about the liberatory affects and effects of memory work in the present. Urgent Archives extends the theoretical range of critical archival studies and provides a new framework for archivists looking to transform their practices. The book should also be of interest to scholars of archival studies, museum studies, public history, memory studies, gender and ethnic studies and digital humanities.

The Academic Librarian as Blended Professional - Reassessing and Redefining the Role (Paperback): Michael Perini The Academic Librarian as Blended Professional - Reassessing and Redefining the Role (Paperback)
Michael Perini
R1,447 Discovery Miles 14 470 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Academic Librarian as Blended Professional employs a model that allows for individual and managerial reconceptualization of the librarian's role, also helping to mitigate obstacles to professional development both internal and external to the library. Using traditional and personal narrative, the book extends Whitchurch's blended professional model, designed to consider the merging of academicians' roles across several spheres of professional and academic influence in a higher education setting, to academic librarians. The book is significant due to its use of higher education theory to examine the professional identity of academic librarians and the issues impacting librarian professional development. The work offers a constructive, replicable research design appropriate for the analysis of librarians in other academic settings, providing additional insights into how these professionals might perceive their roles within the larger context of a higher education environment. Following the application of the blended professional model, this book contends that academic librarians have similar roles concerning research, instruction, and service when compared to an institution's tenure-track faculty. The scope of professional productivity and the expectation of the librarians, though, are much less regimented. Consequently, the academic librarians find themselves in a tenuous working space where their blended role is inhibited by real and perceived barriers.

Roles and Responsibilities of Libraries in Increasing Consumer Health Literacy and Reducing Health Disparities (Hardcover):... Roles and Responsibilities of Libraries in Increasing Consumer Health Literacy and Reducing Health Disparities (Hardcover)
Beth St. Jean, Gagan Jindal, Yuting Liao, Paul T. Jaeger
R3,388 Discovery Miles 33 880 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The rampant health injustices that occur daily throughout the world are exacerbated by health information injustice - something which libraries and librarians play an instrumental role in addressing. This volume brings together librarians, LIS students, educators, and researchers, to discuss the many ways that information professionals and libraries serve as agents of securing health information justice. Kicking off with an introductory chapter which covers the central concepts of health information injustice, the following chapters focus on the roles of libraries and librarians in improving consumer health literacy and reducing health disparities in their communities. In the final chapter, the editors draw on the authors' work to highlight the ways in which libraries and librarians are moving us closer to health justice, and they also discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic is both illuminating and intensifying health disparities, reinforcing the need for libraries and librarians to continue their important roles as agents of health information justice to ensure the physical and intellectual accessibility of information for all.

The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu - And Their Race to Save the World's Most Precious Manuscripts (Paperback): Joshua... The Bad-Ass Librarians of Timbuktu - And Their Race to Save the World's Most Precious Manuscripts (Paperback)
Joshua Hammer 1
R289 R263 Discovery Miles 2 630 Save R26 (9%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

In the 1980s, a young adventurer and collector for a government library, Abdel Kader Haidara, journeyed across the Sahara Desert and along the Niger River, tracking down and salvaging tens of thousands of ancient Islamic and secular manuscripts that were crumbling in the trunks of desert shepherds. His goal: to preserve this crucial part of the world's patrimony in a gorgeous library. But then Al Qaeda showed up at the door. Joshua Hammer writes about how Haidara, a mild-mannered archivist from the legendary city of Timbuktu, became one of the world's greatest smugglers by saving the texts from sure destruction. With bravery and patience, Haidara organized a dangerous operation to sneak all 350,000 volumes out of the city to the safety of southern Mali. His heroic heist is a reminder that ordinary citizens often do the most to protect the beauty of their culture. His story is one of a man who, through extreme circumstances, discovered his higher calling and was changed forever by it.

Citation Tracking in Academic Libraries - An Overview (Paperback): Judith Mavodza Citation Tracking in Academic Libraries - An Overview (Paperback)
Judith Mavodza
R1,120 Discovery Miles 11 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Citation Tracking in Academic Libraries: An Overview presents results from the overarching need for researchers to get relevant advice for their scholarly pursuits. This is even more critical in the fast changing environment, where even those who are established scholars find the new scholarly publishing paradigm hectic, and amateurs get easily intimidated. In the wake of the competitive ranking of universities, there is an added requirement for faculty to be involved with research activities so they can enhance the standing of their parent institutions. That means there is a need to use valid and authentic platforms for publishing. Making reference to already existing texts and answering questions that have been encountered by the author, the book is compiled to make easy, short, and concise reading that is an overview on the tracking of citations. Besides giving suggestions on how academic librarians can provide support to scholars, it includes the benefit of having librarians who are also scholars.

Lessons in Library Leadership - A Primer for Library Managers and Unit Leaders (Paperback): Corey Halaychik Lessons in Library Leadership - A Primer for Library Managers and Unit Leaders (Paperback)
Corey Halaychik
R1,455 Discovery Miles 14 550 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Lessons in Library Leadership: A Primer for Library Managers and Unit Leaders takes on the topic of management positions within libraries and how many of them are filled by candidates with no formalized training. This lack of preparation often leads to added stress as they scramble to learn how to lead, to formulate departmental goals, to conduct effective assessment, to think and plan strategically, to counsel employees, and much more. This book will serve equally as a primer for librarians new to management and those needing a refresher in basic management concepts. Seasoned managers may also look to this guide as a quick reference resource covering multiple management subjects. The contents of the monograph include basic concepts, real word examples/case studies, and bibliographic information for further management skill development.

Promoting Preservation Awareness in Libraries - A Sourcebook for Academic, Public, School, and Special Collections (Hardcover,... Promoting Preservation Awareness in Libraries - A Sourcebook for Academic, Public, School, and Special Collections (Hardcover, New)
Jeanne M. Drewes, Julie Page
R3,001 Discovery Miles 30 010 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

No other book provides such a comprehensive approach to educating library customers and staff in the preservation of library materials. Over 35 case studies provide innovative programs and strategies for providing preservation education initiatives throughout the library. The various types of materials collected paired with the variety of patrons requires a full spectrum of approaches. Going on the assumption that much damage is caused by unknowing misuse, this professional reference gives academic, school, and public library staff as well as special collections staff, a solid approach for designing, implementing and evaluating formal and informal preservation educational programs. As collections deteriorate and library budgets shrink, the longevity of collections becomes an increasingly important issue. To minimize harm to collections, librarians need to emphasize the importance of preservation and proper handling. This professional reference explains how to create, implement and evaluate formal and informal preservation education programs in school, public, academic, and special collections. Chapters are written by contributors from a wide range of positions in librarianship and academia. Building on the assumption that most misuse is because of misunderstanding or lack of understanding, much attention is given to reaching all types of patrons and changing attitudes. Because preservation largely depends on the attitude of patrons, much attention is given to reaching all types of patrons. Informing adults to avoid misuse and teaching children to respect books and to handle them carefully are two different methods. Visual messages using posters, bookmarks, and signs to educate can help prevent damage. Library staff, on the other hand, benefit from training programs, which can effectively include tests and videos. Users of rare and archival materials can be informed through brochures, and one-on-one interaction with librarians. The volume includes over 35 illustrative case studies, and it concludes with an extensive bibliography and videography.

Archives and Human Rights (Paperback): Jens Boel, Perrine Canavaggio, Antonio Gonzalez Quintana Archives and Human Rights (Paperback)
Jens Boel, Perrine Canavaggio, Antonio Gonzalez Quintana
R1,426 Discovery Miles 14 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Why and how can records serve as evidence of human rights violations, in particular crimes against humanity, and help the fight against impunity? Archives and Human Rights shows the close relationship between archives and human rights and discusses the emergence, at the international level, of the principles of the right to truth, justice and reparation. Through a historical overview and topical case studies from different regions of the world the book discusses how records can concretely support these principles. The current examples also demonstrate how the perception of the role of the archivist has undergone a metamorphosis in recent decades, towards the idea that archivists can and must play an active role in defending basic human rights, first and foremost by enabling access to documentation on human rights violations. Confronting painful memories of the past is a way to make the ghosts disappear and begin building a brighter, more serene future. The establishment of international justice mechanisms and the creation of truth commissions are important elements of this process. The healing begins with the acknowledgment that painful chapters are essential parts of history; archives then play a crucial role by providing evidence. This book is both a tool and an inspiration to use archives in defence of human rights. Stirrings in the Archives - Order from Disorder (Hardcover): Wolfgang Ernst Stirrings in the Archives - Order from Disorder (Hardcover)
Wolfgang Ernst; Translated by Adam Siegel
R2,844 Discovery Miles 28 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Like most of Wolfgang Ernst's work, Das Rumoren der Archiv explored the concept of archival and media theory from a current cultural digital context. Ernst challenges the traditional perspective of the cultural heritage institution and how it relied on media for creating, storing and disseminating digital information. Archives have a place in a digital society, and the archivist's role will be more increasingly vital in the future. As Ernst points out, his work will show a way out of the archive, away from the notion that the era of archive is coming to an end. Here is the long-awaited English translation of this seminal work exploring cultural heritage before the archives, throughout history, and from today into the future. Ernst work emphasized a need to recognize media as a method for capturing and preserving our collective cultural identity. It is vital that archivists promoted a greater awareness of how media technology augmented the creation, management, and dissemination of digital content.
