This incisive work is a detailed examination of intraoccupational sex segregation in librarianship. Irvine examines the demographic and career characteristics of male and female library administrators. She explores why women have struggled so long for the status and recognition so easily achieved by their male counterparts. The purpose of this book is to examine the library and the librarian as they communicate with their raison d'etre, the user. Drawing from several literatures--those of communication, information theory, philosophy and linguistics--John M.
