Gunnar Skirbekk
R1,206 Discovery Miles 12 060 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In an age of cultural pluralism, and in light of serious counterarguments, this work offers a justification of universal principles. The book focuses on a series of modern challenges and argues in favor of an awareness for varieties and nuances, as well as a discursive universality. Timely Thoughts represents a serious contribution to inter-cultural dialogues and is appropriate for academia and the public sphere.

aSucceeds at placing blacks and Asians at the center of the Americas, inviting productive dialogue against the notion that interaction between these groups is out of the ordinary.a
--"Journal of American Ethnic History"

"As fresh and exciting as it is important. This crucial book changes the conversation around American Studies and Ethnic Studies in key ways, challenging scholars to light out for previously-uncharted places on our mental maps in which borders are interrogated and challenged, alliances forged through imagined communities, commerce, popular culture, or politics are investigated and probed, and questions that are simultaneously new, and half a century old, are revivified. This volume, the first interdisciplinary anthology dealing with AfroAsian encounters, stands to become a landmark work in the field."
--Shelley Fisher Fishkin, Stanford University

aWhat critical anthologies do best is to present. . . . And AfroAsian Encounters does thata--"Journal of Asian American Studies"

How might we understand yellowface performances by African Americans in 1930s swing adaptations of Gilbert and Sullivan's "The Mikado," Paul Robeson's support of Asian and Asian American struggles, or the absorption of hip hop by Asian American youth culture?

AfroAsian Encounters is the first anthology to look at the mutual influence of and relationships between members of the African and Asian diasporas. While these two groups have often been thought of as occupying incommensurate, if not opposing, cultural and political positions, scholars from history, literature, media, and the visual arts here trace their interconnections and interactions, as well as the tensions between the two groups that sometimes arise. AfroAsian Encounters probes beyond popular culture to trace the historical lineage of these coalitions from the late nineteenth century to the present.

A foreword by Vijay Prashad sets the volume in the context of the Bandung conference half a century ago, and an afterword by Gary Okihiro charts the contours of a "Black Pacific." From the history of Japanese jazz composers to the current popularity of black/Asian "buddy films" like "Rush Hour," AfroAsian Encounters is a groundbreaking intervention into studies of race and ethnicity and a crucial look at the shifting meaning of race in the twenty-first century.

Caste in Contemporary India (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Surinder S Jodhka Caste in Contemporary India (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Surinder S Jodhka
R5,016 Discovery Miles 50 160 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Caste is a contested terrain in India's society and polity. This book explores contemporary realities of caste in rural and urban India. It examines questions of untouchability, citizenship, social mobility, democratic politics, corporate hiring and Dalit activism. Using rich empirical evidence from the field across Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and other parts of north India, this volume presents the reasons for the persistence of caste in India from a new perspective. The book offers an original theoretical framework for comparative understandings of the entrenched social differences, discrimination, inequalities, stratification, and the modes and patterns of their reproduction. This second edition, with a new Introduction, delves into why caste continues to matter and how caste-based divisions often tend to overlap with the emergent disparities of the new economy. A delicate balance of lived experience and hard facts, this persuasive work will serve as essential reading for students and teachers of sociology and social anthropology, social exclusion and discrimination studies, political science, development studies and public policy.

Making Meaning of Whiteness - Exploring Racial Identity with White Teachers (Paperback, New): Alice McIntyre Making Meaning of Whiteness - Exploring Racial Identity with White Teachers (Paperback, New)
Alice McIntyre
R774 Discovery Miles 7 740 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Describes how a group of white female student teachers examined their "whiteness" and developed ways of thinking critically about race and racism in educational practice.

Mclntyre describes how a group of white middle- and upper-middle-class female student teachers examined their "whiteness" and how they, as current and future educators, might develop teaching strategies that aim to disrupt and eliminate the oppressiveness of white privilege in education. The group analyzed ways of making meaning about whiteness and thinking critically about race and racism, and explored how racial identity is implicated in the formation and implementation of teaching practices.

The Rohingya Crisis - Humanitarian and Legal Approaches (Hardcover): Manzoor Hasan, Syed Mansoob Murshed, Priya Pillai The Rohingya Crisis - Humanitarian and Legal Approaches (Hardcover)
Manzoor Hasan, Syed Mansoob Murshed, Priya Pillai
R4,114 Discovery Miles 41 140 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This edited volume addresses the broader aspects of the political and social landscape, human rights violations, accountability and advocacy efforts, and humanitarian challenges faced by the Rohingya from Myanmar. The work brings together different voices of legal, policy, and international affairs experts to construct a framework which addresses the complex and nuanced issues comprising the Rohingya crisis. Although there is recognition that international legal mechanisms are moving forward more quickly than anticipated, these processes do not constitute standalone sustainable solutions. Myanmar's myriad political, social cohesion, development and security challenges are likely to persist even as justice and accountability processes move forward. Thus, this book project is premised on the consensus that the international community should complement international justice mechanisms by looking toward creative and multi-faceted approaches in addition to justice and accountability. This timely contribution will be of interest to academics, researchers, development practitioners, and human rights organizations.

The White Working Class - What Everyone Needs to Know (R) (Hardcover): Justin Gest The White Working Class - What Everyone Needs to Know (R) (Hardcover)
Justin Gest
R1,788 Discovery Miles 17 880 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In recent years, the world has been re-introduced to the constituency of "white working class" people. In a wave of revolutionary populism, far right parties have scored victories across the transatlantic political world: Britain voted to leave the European Union, the United States elected President Donald Trump to enact an "America First" agenda, and Radical Right movements are threatening European centrists in elections across the Continent. In each case, white working class people are driving a broad reaction to the inequities and social change brought by globalization, and its cosmopolitan champions. In the midst of this rebellion, a new group consciousness has emerged among the very people who not so long ago could take their political, economic, and cultural primacy for granted. Who are white working class people? What do they believe? Are white working class people an "interest group"? What has driven them to break so sharply with the world's trajectory toward a more borderless, interconnected meritocracy? How can a group with such enduring power feel marginalized? This perplexing constituency must be understood if the world is to address and respond to the social and political backlash they are driving. The White Working Class: What Everyone Needs to Know (R) provides the context for understanding the politics of this large, perplexing group of people. The book begins by explaining what "white working class" means in terms of demographics, history, and geography, as well as the ways in which this group defines itself and has been defined by others. It will address whether white identity is on the rise, why white people perceive themselves as marginalized, and the roles of racism and xenophobia in white consciousness. It will also look at whether the white working class has distinct political attitudes, their voting behavior, and their prospects for the future. This accessible book provides a nuanced view into the forces driving one of the most complicated and consequential political constituencies today.

Muslims in Europe - Comparative perspectives on socio-cultural integration (Hardcover): Paul Statham, Jean Tillie Muslims in Europe - Comparative perspectives on socio-cultural integration (Hardcover)
Paul Statham, Jean Tillie
R4,560 Discovery Miles 45 600 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Atrocities by terrorists acting in the name of the 'Islamic State' are occurring with increasing regularity across Western Europe. Often the perpetrators are 'home grown', which places the relationship between Muslims and the countries in which they live under intense political and media scrutiny, and raises questions about the success of the integration of Muslims of migrant origin. At the same time, populist politicians try to shift the blame from the few perpetrators to the supposed characteristics of all Muslims as a 'group' by depicting Islam as a threat that seeks to undermine liberal democratic values and institutions. The research in this volume attempts to redress the balance by focusing on the views and life experiences of the many 'ordinary' Muslims in their European societies of settlement, and the role that cultural and religious factors play in shaping their social relationships with majority populations and public institutions. The book is specifically interested in the relationship between cultural/religious distance and social factors that shape the life chances of Muslims relative to the majority. The study is cross-national, comparative across the six main receiving countries with distinct approaches to the accommodation of Muslims: France, Germany, Britain, the Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland. The research is based on the findings of a survey of four groups of Muslims from distinct countries of origin: Turkey, Morocco, the former Yugoslavia, and Pakistan, as well as majority populations, in each of the receiving countries. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies.

Community Reconstruction After an Earthquake - Dialectical Sociology in Action (Hardcover, New): Ino Rossi Community Reconstruction After an Earthquake - Dialectical Sociology in Action (Hardcover, New)
Ino Rossi
R2,909 Discovery Miles 29 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Rossi develops a theory of the roles of "action" (social actor) and "structure" (sociopolitical resources, cultural resources, and economic resources) in disaster studies, using the data on community reconstruction after the 1980 earthquake in Southern Italy as a preliminary test of the theory. The focus of the study is not the response during the emergency period which immediately followed the earthquake, but the long-term recovery and reconstruction of the 44 communities which were officially classified as the most heavily damaged. Aspects of the post-earthquake industrialization of the region are also considered, since the physical reconstruction of the destroyed communities is inevitably connected with their socioeconomic development. Rossi outlines and tests a new framework which permits prediction of the different speeds of community reconstruction, and provides a dialectic theory of the interrelationship between structural and action principles of social action.

Perceptions of Ethnicity, Religion, and Radicalization among Second-Generation Pakistani-Canadians - Unity in Diversity?... Perceptions of Ethnicity, Religion, and Radicalization among Second-Generation Pakistani-Canadians - Unity in Diversity? (Hardcover)
Saad Ahmad Khan
R2,539 Discovery Miles 25 390 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

"Why do they hate us?" The answer to a seemingly simple question made famous by U.S. President George W. Bush in the wake of 9/11 has become more complex with the entrance of homegrown terrorists into many armed conflicts. Why do they hate us so much that some of them try to kill us en masse, even though they are born and raised with us, go to school with us, and work with us. This book offers an in-depth analysis to the phenomenon of radicalization of second-generation Pakistani-Canadians. Based on interviews with second-generation Pakistani-Canadians from various backgrounds, Saad Ahmad Khan argues that radicalization is a complex and layered process stemming from multiple sources ranging from childhood experiences to the role of Saudi Arabia in exporting its brand of Islam. Individual, social, national, and international factors need to be addressed holistically, if radicalization of second-generation individuals is to be pre-empted and subsequent generations saved from the scourge of violence and terrorism.

Becoming Intercultural - An Integrative Theory of Communication and Cross-Cultural Adaptation (Hardcover): Young Yun Kim Becoming Intercultural - An Integrative Theory of Communication and Cross-Cultural Adaptation (Hardcover)
Young Yun Kim
R4,780 Discovery Miles 47 800 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book looks at the movements of immigrants and refugees and the challenges they face as they cross cultural boundaries and strive to build a new life in an unfamiliar place. It focuses on the psychological dynamic underpinning of their adaptation process, how their internal conditions change over time, the role of their ethnic and personal backgrounds, and of the conditions of the host environment affecting the process. Addressing these and related issues, the author presents a comprehensive theory, or a "big picture," of the cross-cultural adaptation phenomenon.

Bernard W. Bell, Emily R. Grosholz, James B. Stewart
R1,248 Discovery Miles 12 480 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

W.E.B. Du Bois was one of the most profound and influential African American intellectuals of the twentieth century. His tenacious engagement with racism, and his contributions to African American studies are unparalleled. Yet scholarly attention to his work has been sporadic and uneven. This collection of essays is intended as both an addition and spur to the current renaissance of interest in Du Bois's work.
Interpreting Du Bois' thoughts on race and culture in a broadly philosophical sense, this volume assembles original essays by some of the leading philosopher, literary critics, historians, and sociologists in the field of Du Bois work. Its three sections engage in a critical dialogue on different important theoretical and practical issues that concerned him throughout his long career: the conundrum of race, the issue of gender equality, and the perplexities of pan-Africanism.

Recovery, Mental Health and Inequality - Chinese Ethnic Minorities as Mental Health Service Users (Hardcover): Lynn Tang Recovery, Mental Health and Inequality - Chinese Ethnic Minorities as Mental Health Service Users (Hardcover)
Lynn Tang
R4,555 Discovery Miles 45 550 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Mental health has long been perceived as a taboo subject in the UK, so much so that mental health services have been marginalised within health and social care. There is even more serious neglect of the specific issues faced by different ethnic minorities. This book uses the rich narratives of the recovery journeys of Chinese mental health service users in the UK - a perceived 'hard-to-reach group' and largely invisible in mental health literature - to illustrate the myriad ways that social inequalities such as class, ethnicity and gender contribute to service users' distress and mental ill-health, as well as shape their subsequent recovery journeys. Recovery, Mental Health and Inequality contributes to the debate about the implementation of 'recovery approach' in mental health services and demonstrates the importance of tackling structural inequalities in facilitating meaningful recovery. This timely book would benefit practitioners and students in various fields, such as nurses, social workers and mental health postgraduate trainees.

On Our Own Terms - Race, Class, and Gender in the Lives of African-American Women (Paperback, New): Leith Mullings On Our Own Terms - Race, Class, and Gender in the Lives of African-American Women (Paperback, New)
Leith Mullings
R1,307 Discovery Miles 13 070 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

On Our Own Terms explores the roles that culture, history and society play in conditioning the experience of gender. Through exploring the fundamental issues of work outside the home, it challenges traditional definitions of the family and household. Integrating her personal and political insights into an analysis of contemporary social events and forces the confront an entire generation, On Our Own Terms speaks to the need to push Black feminist thought toward a transformative perspective, moving from theory to radical praxis. With a view to developing transformative strategies that affect politics as well as the academy, Leith Mullings considers the implications of these issues for the feminist agenda and for our understanding of social processes.

Chinese Americans - The History and Culture of a People (Hardcover): Jonathan H X Lee Chinese Americans - The History and Culture of a People (Hardcover)
Jonathan H X Lee
R3,799 Discovery Miles 37 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This in-depth historical analysis highlights the enormous contributions of Chinese Americans to the professions, politics, and popular culture of America, from the 19th century through the present day. While the number of Chinese Americans has grown very rapidly in the last decade, this group has long thrived in the United States in spite of racism, discrimination, and segregation. This comprehensive volume takes a global view of the Chinese experience in the Americas. While the focus is on Chinese Americans in the United States, author Jonathan H. X. Lee also explores the experiences of Chinese immigrants in Canada, Mexico, and South America. He considers why the Chinese chose to leave their home country, where they settled, and how the distinctive Chinese American identity was formed. This volume is organized into four sections: historical overview; political and economic life; cultural and religious life; and literature, the arts, and popular culture. Detailed essays capture the essence of everyday life for this immigrant group as they assimilated, established communities, and interacted with other ethnic groups. Alphabetically arranged entries describe the political, social, and religious institutions begun by Chinese Americans and explores their roles as business owners, activists, and philanthropic benefactors for their communities. Highlights the distinctive roles that Chinese Americans have added to the fabric of American life Illustrates the experience of Chinese Americans with discrimination, resistance, and assimilation Considers the emigres of the Sinophone diaspora with entries on Cambodian-Chinese and Vietnamese-Chinese Americans Offers a selection of fascinating primary documents that enrich the reader's experience Reveals the problems that Chinese American women faced with the passage of the 1882 Exclusion Act

Place, Race, and Identity Formation - Autobiographical Intersections in a Curriculum Theorist's Daily Life (Hardcover): Ed... Place, Race, and Identity Formation - Autobiographical Intersections in a Curriculum Theorist's Daily Life (Hardcover)
Ed Douglas McKnight
R4,553 Discovery Miles 45 530 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In this work of curriculum theory, Ed Douglas McKnight addresses and explores the intersections between place (with specific discussion of Kincheloe's and Pinar's conceptualization of place and identity) and race (specifically Winthrop Jordan's historical analysis of race as an Anglo-European construction that became the foundation of a white mythos). To that end, he employs a form of narrative construction called curriculum vitae (course of life)-a method of locating and delineating identity formation which addresses how theories of place, race and identity formation play out in a particular concrete life. By working through how place racializes identity and existence, the author engages in a long Southern tradition of storytelling, but in a way that turns it inside out. Instead of telling his own story as a means to romanticize the sins of the southern past, he tells a new story of growing up within the "white" discourse of the Deep South in the 1960s and 70s, tracking how his racial identity was created and how it has followed him through life. Significant in this narrative is how the discourse of whiteness and place continues to express itself even within the subject position of a curriculum theorist teaching in a large Deep South university. The book concludes with an elaboration on the challenges of engaging in the necessary anti-racist complicated conversation within education to begin to work through and cope with heavy racialized inheritances.

Chinese Minorities at home and abroad (Hardcover): Michael Dillon Chinese Minorities at home and abroad (Hardcover)
Michael Dillon
R2,862 Discovery Miles 28 620 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The classification of ethnic identities (minzu) remains controversial in China. Categories established in the 1950s are still used by the state to administer minority areas, despite the existence of a complicated web of subjective identities which potentially undermines efforts to use these categories effectively. This book offers a new, and sometimes unusual, perspective on ethnic relations in China, and on the interactions between China and other cultures. Two major themes run through the book: the classification of ethnic minorities in China by the state, and the implications of this practice; and the way in which China and the Chinese are seen by outsiders as well as insiders. The contributors, whose research is all based on fieldwork with the relevant communities, are from a wide range of backgrounds and are currently based in China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, and Germany. The subjects of their research are the politics of minority classification in the People's Republic of China; questions of identity in Xinjiang; Kazakhstani perceptions of China and the Chinese; Chinese Muslims in Malaysia; and the growing Chinese diaspora in Africa. This book was originally published as a special issue of Ethnic and Racial Studies.

The Fair Sex - White Women and Racial Patriarchy in the Early American Republic (Paperback, New Ed): Pauline E Schloesser The Fair Sex - White Women and Racial Patriarchy in the Early American Republic (Paperback, New Ed)
Pauline E Schloesser
R832 Discovery Miles 8 320 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

"Choice Outstanding Academic Title 2002"

"This book should be viewed as a jumping-off point to examine the theory of racial patriarchy at different times and places throughout American history."
--"The Journal of American History"

"Provides an excellent theory for understanding the mutual constitution of race and gender in the formation of 'women's identity'"
--"Women & Politics"

"Schloesser raises issues most Americans would rather ignore."
--"Social & Behavioral Sciences"

Once the egalitarian passions of the American Revolution had dimmed, the new nation settled into a conservative period that saw the legal and social subordination of women and non-white men. Among the Founders who brought the fledgling government into being were those who sought to establish order through the reconstruction of racial and gender hierarchies. In this effort they enlisted "the fair sex," white women. Politicians, ministers, writers, husbands, fathers and brothers entreated Anglo-American women to assume responsibility for the nation's virtue. Thus, although disfranchised, they served an important national function, that of civilizing non-citizen. They were encouraged to consider themselves the moral and intellectual superiors to non-whites, unruly men, and children. These white women were empowered by race and ethnicity, and class, but limited by gender. And in seeking to maintain their advantages, they helped perpetuate the system of racial domination by refusing to support the liberation of others from literal slavery.

Schloesser examines the lives and writings of three female political intellectuals--Mercy Otis Warren, Abigail Smith Adams, and Judith Sargent Murray--each ofwhom was acutely aware of their tenuous position in the founding era of the republic. Carefully negotiating the gender and racial hierarchies of the nation, they at varying times asserted their rights and demurred to male governance. In their public and private actions they represented the paradigm of racial patriarchy at its most complex and its most conflicted.

Race in France - Interdisciplinary Perspectives on the Politics of Difference (Hardcover): Herrick Chapman, Laura L. Frader Race in France - Interdisciplinary Perspectives on the Politics of Difference (Hardcover)
Herrick Chapman, Laura L. Frader
R3,077 Discovery Miles 30 770 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Scholars across disciplines on both sides of the Atlantic have recently begun to open up, as never before, the scholarly study of race and racism in France. These original essays bring together in one volume new work in history, sociology, anthropology, political science, and legal studies. Each of the eleven articles presents fresh research on the tension between a republican tradition in France that has long denied the legitimacy of acknowledging racial difference and a lived reality in which racial prejudice shaped popular views about foreigners, Jews, immigrants, and colonial people. Several authors also examine efforts to combat racism since the 1970s.
