The Uses of Psychoanalysis in Working with Children's Emotional Lives (Hardcover): Michael O'Loughlin The Uses of Psychoanalysis in Working with Children's Emotional Lives (Hardcover)
Michael O'Loughlin; Contributions by Devra B. Adelstein, Ann Alaoglu, E.James Anthony, Gail Boldt, …
R2,557 Discovery Miles 25 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume offers very specific illustrations of psychoanalytic ways of thinking and working in both clinical and pedagogical contexts with children. It is designed for professionals who work with infants, children, and adolescents, and who are seeking modes of working that respects emotions, that embrace context, and that privilege imagination and possibility. For professionals who already practice in ways that are sympathetic to these modes of working, the scholarly underpinning of this work offers a rationale for taking a stand in favor of emotionally focused, child-centered work and in opposition to systems that negate the lives of children. This book is for caring professionals who devote their lives to creating spaces for children to find their own paths and is intended to serve as a source of sustenance and support for such work.

The Dark Side of Transformational Leadership - A Critical Perspective (Hardcover, New): Dennis Tourish The Dark Side of Transformational Leadership - A Critical Perspective (Hardcover, New)
Dennis Tourish
R4,072 Discovery Miles 40 720 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Most research into leadership has presented leaders as heroic, charismatic and transformational 'visionaries'. The leader, whether in business, politics or any other field, is the most important factor in determining whether organizations succeed or fail. Indeed, despite the fundamental mistakes which have, arguably, directly led to global economic recession, it is often still taken for granted that transformational leadership is a good thing, and that leaders should have much more power than followers to decide what needs to be done. The Dark Side of Transformational Leadership confronts this orthodoxy by illustrating how such approaches can encourage narcissism, megalomania and poor decision-making on the part of leaders, at great expense to those organizations they are there to serve. Written in a lively and engaging style, the book uses a number of case studies to illustrate the perils of transformational leadership, from the Jonestown tragedy in 1978 when over 900 people were either murdered or committed suicide at the urging of their leader, to an analysis of how banking executives tried to explain away their role in the 2008 financial crisis This provocative and hugely important book offers a rare critical perspective in the field of leadership studies. Concluding with a new approach that offers an alternative to the dominant transformational model, The Dark Side of Transformational Leadership will be an invaluable text for academics interested in leadership, students on leadership courses requiring a more critical perspective, and anyone concerned with how people lead people, and the lessons we can learn.

Advertising and Psychology (RLE Advertising) (Hardcover, New): Leslie Gill Advertising and Psychology (RLE Advertising) (Hardcover, New)
Leslie Gill
R3,925 Discovery Miles 39 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The consequences of advertising on the social life of the community has been a much-discussed topic in recent years. Advertising as a means of influencing the thought and behaviour of masses of people involves the application of such fundamental aspects of psychology as attention, motivation, memory, association, suggestion, volition, and so on. Modern advertising presents its message in a variety of forms: attracting, informing, reminding, suggesting and impelling us many times during the course of any single day. To what extent advertising influences our tastes, preferences and purchases may be gauged by the number of things we buy directly or indirectly as the result of reading advertisements. In this volume the main interest is the study of public reaction to various advertising appeals. The advertising aspect of psychology involves the study of man's conscious and near-conscious activities. What goes on his mind when he is attracted by something he sees and reads in an advertisement or poster? This question Advertising and Psychology attempts to answer. Dealing as it does with so complex and fascinating a theme, this book's purpose is to provide an introductory outline in a manner intelligible to both the student and the general reader. First published in 1954.

Multiple Intelligences and Leadership (Paperback): Ronald E. Riggio, Susan Elaine Murphy, Francis J. Pirozzolo Multiple Intelligences and Leadership (Paperback)
Ronald E. Riggio, Susan Elaine Murphy, Francis J. Pirozzolo
R1,689 Discovery Miles 16 890 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This edited book presents cutting-edge research looking at the role of multiple intelligence--cognitive (IQ), emotional intelligence, social intelligence--in effective leadership, written by the most distinguished scholars in the two distinct fields of intelligence and leadership. The synergy of bringing together both traditional intelligence researchers and renowned leadership scholars to discuss how multiple forms of intelligence impact leadership has important implications for the study and the practice of organizational and political leadership. This volume emanates from the recent explosion of interest in non-IQ domains of intelligence, particularly in Emotional Intelligence and Social Intelligence. Indeed, the leading EI and SI scholars have contributed to this book. Research described in this book suggests that: (1) possession of multiple forms of intelligence is important for effective leadership; (2) researchers are just beginning to understand the breadth, depth, and potential applications of non-IQ domains of intelligence; (3) incorporating multiple intelligence constructs into existing leadership theories will improve our understanding of effective leadership; and (4) research on multiple intelligence has important implications for both the selection and training of future leaders.

Dying on the Job - Murder and Mayhem in the American Workplace (Hardcover): Ronald D. Brown Dying on the Job - Murder and Mayhem in the American Workplace (Hardcover)
Ronald D. Brown
R1,370 Discovery Miles 13 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Dying on the Job is the first book on workplace violence to focus exclusively on workplace murder. While some perpetrators are certainly mentally impaired, many workplace murders are committed by people considered to be "normal." Brown explores the various motives and drives that spark workplace murder, and answers hundreds of questions that are usually asked only after a workplace murder rampage has already occurred. Are men or women more likely to commit workplace homicide? How can people more easily spot those likely to commit workplace murder? What are some of the warning signs? How often is "suicide" used as workplace revenge? The answers to these questions and more are based on more than 350 actual cases of workplace murder, and the answers are often surprising. Brown also addresses different areas of prevention, counseling, and rehabilitation, and analyzes different approaches to gun control for both management and employees to make their job a safer place to work.

Effective Multi-Unit Leadership - Local Leadership in Multi-Site Situations (Hardcover, New Ed): Chris Edger Effective Multi-Unit Leadership - Local Leadership in Multi-Site Situations (Hardcover, New Ed)
Chris Edger
R4,827 Discovery Miles 48 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

There is a growing recognition of the increasing importance of 'local leadership' practice within multi-unit service contexts, given the threat to costly land-based retail infrastructures from smart technologies. Multi-site organizations are economically significant, but currently under-researched and poorly understood. In Effective Multi-Unit Leadership, Chris Edger looks at that key managerial cohort in the retail, hospitality and service sectors operating between the centre and unit - the Multi-Unit Leader (MUL). This district, area or regional manager, is tasked with maximising revenue and profit from a complex and ambiguous positional space, being sandwiched between the centre and unit, facing the MUL paradox: how do they motivate unit managers and team members to provide great service whilst simultaneously fulfilling the Centre's compliance agenda? Based on extensive case study research across a range of multi-unit service organisations, Edger advances an Integrated Model of MUL that elucidates how key activities (sales-led service, systems and standards - 3Ss) are driven through behavioural practices (commitment, control and change - 3Cs) underpinned by MUL personal characteristics (expertise, emotional intelligence and energy - 3Es). Central to this model is the notion of 'portfolio optimisation through social exchange' (POSE) where MULs apply 'local leadership', leveraging their portfolios through the deft application of exchange-based currencies. Replete with case studies, Effective Multi-Unit Leadership will appeal to high potential unit managers; existing multi-unit leaders who want to improve their performance levels; and retail/service directors wishing to train and coach their direct reports; as well as business educators and those with an academic interest in organisational studies.

Perspectives on Organizational Fit (Paperback): Cheri Ostroff, Timothy A. Judge Perspectives on Organizational Fit (Paperback)
Cheri Ostroff, Timothy A. Judge
R1,720 Discovery Miles 17 200 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book concerns how employees consider their work lives, how well they fit their jobs, the work setting, other people, and what is important and valued in their organizations. Perspectives on Organizational Fit, a new book in SIOP's Organizational Frontiers Series, takes a scholarly look at fit in organizations: the relationship between individuals and the environments in which they find themselves. As the volume extends upon recent advances in fit theory, the contributors address how fit theory is used within selection, recruitment, diversity, and leadership teams. It also explores the integration of different fit perspectives, and clarifies the methodological and statistical issues that plague fit research. The burgeoning interest in fit issues makes this book especially timely. It is comprised of three parts that cover: new directions in fit processes, as well as micro and macro levels of analysis; methodological and statistics issues that pertain to conducting fit research; and reflections from the chapter authors and the continuing challenges of future research in fit theory. Perspectives on Organizational Fit is appropriate for researchers and professionals in the areas of human resource management, organizational behavior, and industrial organizational psychology.

The Psychology of Entrepreneurship (Paperback): J. Robert Baum, Michael Frese, Robert A. Baron The Psychology of Entrepreneurship (Paperback)

This book will appeal to teachers, students, and researchers in the areas of industrial organizational psychology, organizational behavior, entrepreneurship, and management.

Co-operative Workplace Dispute Resolution - Organizational Structure, Ownership, and Ideology (Hardcover, New Ed): Elizabeth A... Co-operative Workplace Dispute Resolution - Organizational Structure, Ownership, and Ideology (Hardcover, New Ed)
Elizabeth A Hoffmann
R4,369 Discovery Miles 43 690 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Understanding the complex dynamics involved in workplace disputes helps improve the way organizations deal with unwelcome but inevitable occurrences. These issues have been researched from different perspectives, but previously such research has failed to ask how flattened organizational form might impact ways of resolving disputes, focusing instead on what occurs in conventional, hierarchical organizations only. In Co-operative Workplace Dispute Resolution, Elizabeth Hoffmann considers the question of how workplace disputes are raised in the absence of formal hierarchy. In contrast to conventionally organized businesses, co-operatives attempt to evenly distribute power and ownership and encourage worker control through egalitarian ideologies, flattened management structures and greater information sharing. Like conventional businesses, though, they still pursue goals relating to profit and efficiency. Dr Hoffmann argues that lessening hierarchy and sharing power, as occurs in co-operatives, provides insight into how greater worker involvement and ownership might operate in a less extreme and more modest form in conventional mainstream business. This book focuses on dispute resolution strategies at matched pairs of worker co-operatives and conventional businesses in three very different industries: coal mining, taxicab driving, and wholefood distribution. The author's central finding is that the worker co-operative members have access to more dispute resolution strategies than their conventionally employed counterparts. This leads to the conclusion that benefits might be achieved by conventional businesses that wish to embrace specific attributes usually associated with co-operatives, including management-employee cooperation, shared ownership, or greater workplace equality.

Path Dependence and Creation (Paperback): Raghu Garud, Peter Karnoe Path Dependence and Creation (Paperback)
Raghu Garud, Peter Karnoe
R1,728 Discovery Miles 17 280 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The editors, aware of the recent work in evolutionary theory and the science of chaos and complexity, challenge the sometimes deterministic flavor of this subject. They are interested in uncovering the place of agency in these theories that take history so seriously. In the end, they are as interested in path creation and destruction as they are in path dependence. This book is compiled of both theoretical and empirical writings. It shows relatively well-known industries, such as the automobile, biotechnology, and semi-conductor industries in a new light. It also invites the reader to learn more about medical practices, wind power, lasers, and synthesizers. Primarily written for academicians, researchers, and Ph.D. students in fields related to technology management, this book is research-oriented and will appeal to all managers.

Cross Cultural Issues in Consumer Science and Consumer Psychology - Current Perspectives and Future Directions (Hardcover, 1st... Cross Cultural Issues in Consumer Science and Consumer Psychology - Current Perspectives and Future Directions (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Hester van Herk, Carlos J. Torelli
R3,778 Discovery Miles 37 780 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This integrative volume identifies and defines cross-cultural issues in consumer psychology and consumer science as the world becomes an increasingly global marketplace. An international panel of experts analyzes current trends in consumer behavior across diverse countries worldwide and across cultural groups within countries, depicting commonly-used cross-cultural frameworks and research methods. Beginning with conceptualizing and quantifying culture at the national level, the volume then moves to individual levels of analysis of consumer decision-making, examining consumer data as they affect business decisions in marketing products internationally. The resulting work synthesizes the consumer science, international business, and consumer psychology literatures for a deeper understanding of all three disciplines and pathways to future research as cultures interact and tastes evolve. Among the topics covered: Culture as a driver of individual and national consumer behavior. Consumer culture-based attitudes toward buying foreign versus domestic products. Country-of-origin effects: consumer perceptions of international products. The roles of cultural influences in product branding. Cultural aspects of consumer-brand relationships. Consumer behavior in the emerging marketplace of subsistence countries. This attention to both national detail and individual nuance makes Cross-Cultural Issues in Consumer Science and Consumer Psychology an instructive and highly useful reference for scholars and students in consumer psychology, cross-cultural psychology, marketing, international business, as well as professionals in these areas.

FRAM: The Functional Resonance Analysis Method - Modelling Complex Socio-technical Systems (Hardcover, New Ed): Erik Hollnagel FRAM: The Functional Resonance Analysis Method - Modelling Complex Socio-technical Systems (Hardcover, New Ed)
Erik Hollnagel
R4,654 Discovery Miles 46 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Resilience engineering has consistently argued that safety is more than the absence of failures. Since the first book was published in 2006, several book chapters and papers have demonstrated the advantage in going behind 'human error' and beyond the failure concept, just as a number of serious accidents have accentuated the need for it. But there has not yet been a comprehensive method for doing so; the Functional Resonance Analysis Method (FRAM) fulfils that need. Whereas commonly used methods explain events by interpreting them in terms of an already existing model, the FRAM is used to model the functions that are needed for everyday performance to succeed. This model can then be used to explain specific events, by showing how functions can be coupled and how the variability of everyday performance sometimes may lead to unexpected and out-of-scale outcomes - either good or bad. The FRAM is based on four principles: equivalence of failures and successes, approximate adjustments, emergence, and functional resonance. As the FRAM is a method rather than a model, it makes no assumptions about how the system under investigation is structured or organised, nor about possible causes and cause-effect relations. Instead of looking for failures and malfunctions, the FRAM explains outcomes in terms of how functions become coupled and how everyday performance variability may resonate. This book presents a detailed and tested method that can be used to model how complex and dynamic socio-technical systems work, to understand why things sometimes go wrong but also why they normally succeed.

The Psychology and Management of Project Teams (Hardcover): Francois Chiocchio, E.Kevin Kelloway, Brian Hobbs The Psychology and Management of Project Teams (Hardcover)
Francois Chiocchio, E.Kevin Kelloway, Brian Hobbs
R3,302 Discovery Miles 33 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Organizations today, are increasingly using projects in their daily activities. Projects and project-management principles frame goal attainment in academia and many business sectors, and they even serve as theoretical footing for organizational-change endeavors. However, the ubiquity of project management does not mean that project work, project teams, and the ways organizations use projects are well understood. Moreover, while project-management theory and practice aim at providing structure and control to enable successful project completion, an alarmingly high percentage of projects struggle or fail. As the authors of The Psychology and Management of Project Teams explain, this is in part because projects are still mostly managed as technical systems rather than behavioral systems. Even though project-management researchers have become increasingly interested in factors that may have an impact on project-management effectiveness, their efforts fall short of addressing the "human factor." And, unfortunately, many project-management scholars are largely unaware of the I/O psychology literature-relying, for example, on outdated models of motivation and team development. On the other side, I/O psychologists who research groups and teams often ignore the contextual influences-such as business sector, project type, placement in the organizational hierarchy, and project phase and maturity-that have a crucial impact on how a project will unfold. In this volume, a cross-disciplinary set of editors will bring together perspectives from leading I/O psychology and project-management scholars. The volume will include comprehensive coverage of team selection, development, learning, motivation, and communication; conflict management and well-being; leadership; diversity; performance from a multi-level perspective; and career development. In the concluding chapter, a research agenda will provide a roadmap for an integrated approach to the study of project teams.
