John J. Mulcahy
R3,126 Discovery Miles 31 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The first edition of Male Sexual Function: A Guide to Clinical Management was published in 2001. Since that time, two new oral medications for erectile dysfunction (R) (R) (ED), Vardenafil (Levitra ) and Tadalafil (Cialis ), have been introduced. Links between ED and lower urinary tract symptoms have been postulated, advances in the basic science of erectile physiology have occurred, and the appreciation of ED as a form of endothelial dysfunction and a harbinger of other more potentially lethal forms of vascular disease has become more widespread. In some instances, third-party payers have reduced or eliminated coverage for ED treatments in an attempt to cut costs. They have classified sexual activity as "recreational," "lifestyle," or not medically necessary, but have failed to appreciate the negative consequences of ED, such as depression with all of its ramifications. Male Sexual Function: A Guide to Clinical Management, Second Edition is a comp- hensive overview of the field of male sexual function and includes a chapter on female sexual dysfunction, an emerging field with a very high incidence in the population and an ever-growing following.

Hypospadias is recognised as one the most common congenital malformations in male newborns, resulting in an abnormal opening of urethral meatus. It is regarded as a multifactorial disorder in which interactions between genetics, maternal and environmental factors lead to hypoplastic development of the ventral side of the penis, either dependently or in an interaction with other factors. This book discusses the risk factors of hypospadias. It also examines the epidemiology and surgical outcomes of hypospadias.

This brand new edition describes in detail the tests involved in urodynamic investigation and shows in which clinical areas these tests can help the management of patients. The authors concentrate on common clinical problems and on the presentation of symptom complexes rather than diagnosis, pointing out any limitations and possible artefacts of investigation. * The new edition takes into account the technological innovations that have taken place over the last 10 years, while retaining the original objectives of the first edition. * The subject is presented so simply that a clinician with no previous experience will learn how to use the appropriate equipment in the correct situation. * Urodynamic investigation is described in such detail that it can be accepted in its own right as a fundamental contribution to the management of many patients. After reading this book, clinicians will appreciate the value and limitations of the subject and will have obtained the necessary practical advice on which equipment to use in which situation.

Handbook of Genitourinary Medicine (Hardcover): Rashmi R Singh Handbook of Genitourinary Medicine (Hardcover)
Rashmi R Singh
R3,453 Discovery Miles 34 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book presents review articles in the study of genitourinary medicine. Topics include basic research that investigates the epigenetic mechanisms in urogenital cancers; the role of matrix metalloproteinases in urothelial cancers; the role of toll-like receptor genes in prostate cancers; recent emerging and novel treatment modalities in advanced metastatic renal cell and bladder carcinomas; novel mouse models for studying malformations in the genitourinary tract; the role of tissue engineering in genitourinary regenerative medicine; and clinical management of patients with Vesicoureteric reflux. Apart from the very well-known Wilms tumour (a form of paediatric hereditary kidney tumours), little is known about paediatric nephritic syndrome and their genetic causes and clinical manifestations. Hence, a special chapter has been included that describes the recent genetic technologies that identify gene mutations in patients with paediatric nephritic syndrome. The specific gene mutations found in these patients are often associated with rapid renal failures, disease progression and poor survival outcome. Each of the articles presented by authors from all over the world are renowned and experts in their own field of research. The authors are based either in research and/or a clinical setting and the articles are only a summary of the view points of each of these authors.

Proton Warriors - Surviving Prostate Cancer AND the Prostate Cancer Industry (Paperback): Harold H. Dawley Jr. Ph. D. Proton Warriors - Surviving Prostate Cancer AND the Prostate Cancer Industry (Paperback)
Harold H. Dawley Jr. Ph. D.
R261 Discovery Miles 2 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

If you (or a loved one) have recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer, danger lies ahead. Efforts will be made to either treat it unnecessarily or with procedures with risks of side effects so severe you will regret it. The Prostate Cancer Industry is a vast array of medical device manufacturers, heath care facilities, physicians and others who generate over a billion dollars annually from treating prostate cancer of which only 20% is actually life threatening. Efforts will be made to scare you into believing you need immediate treatment with most of you being encouraged to have surgery or other treatment provided by the urologist who diagnosed your prostate cancer or an associate. DON'T RUSH INTO TREATMENT until you have obtained an independent second or third opinion from a medical oncologist or internist unrelated to the physician who diagnosed it. To survive prostate cancer AND the prostate cancer industry you must educate yourself on prostate cancer and the different ways it can be treated. Keep in mind that what is in your doctor's best interest may not always be in your best interest. The author selected the non-invasive treatment of proton therapy because of its established effectiveness and least risk of serious side effects. He describes his surprisingly pleasant journey through prostate treatment and encourages you to consider proton therapy as your treatment.

Hemodialysis Vascular Access - Practice and problems (Hardcover, Revised): Peter Conlon, Michael Nicholson, Steve Schwab Hemodialysis Vascular Access - Practice and problems (Hardcover, Revised)
Peter Conlon, Michael Nicholson, Steve Schwab
R12,035 Discovery Miles 120 350 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book describes the current status of vascular access for patients with end-stage renal failure who require dialysis. The book highlights controversial areas and problems and describes differences in practice in USA and Europe. Vascular Access is the Achilles heel of dialysis. In the United States and Europe in 1999 there were in access of 400,000 patients maintained on dialysis. The success of this life sustaining procedure is dependant on being able to successfully access the circulation and obtain blood flows of between two and five hundred mls per minute three times a week. In 1964 Cimino and Brescia described what remains today the premier form of vascular access. Not long after the development of the Cimino Brescia fistula it became apparent that there were patients in whom it was either impossible or extremely difficult to create an adequate fistula for dialysis. As dialysis technology has been applied to older and sicker patients this trend has continued, such that in the United States the majority of patients starting dialysis do not have a primary fistula. The maintenance of long-term vascular access in patients who do not have a primary fistula requires considerably increased effort. In recent years a number of innovations have considerably increased the success of long- term vascular access in these patients. This book brings together these developments, including strategies to prospectively detect impending vascular access failure, and strategies to pre-emptively prevent graft failure. Simultaneously with these developments there have been dramatic improvements in our understanding of the pathophysiology of graft failure, this improved understanding of the biology of access failure are beginning to bring to the clinical arena newer strategies to delay graft failure.

Complications of Long-term Dialysis (Hardcover): Edwina A. Brown, Patrick S. Parfrey Complications of Long-term Dialysis (Hardcover)
Edwina A. Brown, Patrick S. Parfrey
R12,049 Discovery Miles 120 490 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As the dialysis population grows, the number of survivors in the second and even third decade of dialysis also increase. These long term survivors face not only the universal complications of dialysis such as anemia and hyparathyroidism but also the consequences of these complications such as the long term cardiovascular problems. They are also subjected to many years of accumulation of "uremic metabolites" resulting in conditions unique to this group of patients, the best example being dialysis amyloid. This book not only describes the causes of morbidity and mortality during the second decade of dialysis but also how these complications can be prevented or minimised. "As you make your bed so you must lie upon it." Survival and quality of life in the second decade and beyond dialysis cannot be divorced from events in the first decade. The longest survival is currently in those patients who have dialysed long hours with tight control of fluid status. Modern dialysis practice and its impact on survival - CAPD, short hour hemodialysis, biocompatible membranes are all discussed in this book.

Happy Down Below - Everything You Want to Know About the Penis and Other Bits (Paperback): Dr. Oliver Gralla Happy Down Below - Everything You Want to Know About the Penis and Other Bits (Paperback)
Dr. Oliver Gralla; Foreword by Peter Moore 1
R388 R327 Discovery Miles 3 270 Save R61 (16%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Treat yourself and your man-root to a thorough and often uproarious read-through. Your health prospects will be pointing at the ceiling in no time."—Peter Moore, former editor of Men's Health

Men are notoriously reluctant to see a doctor. Only three in five men report going for an annual physical, and over 40 percent only ever visit the clinic when their symptoms become unbearable. Many know little or nothing about their bodies, with dire consequences for their well-being.

In Happy Down Below, men’s health specialist Dr. Oliver Gralla provides a clever and highly entertaining remedy to that situation. Packed with colorful anecdotes and quirky illustrations, this cheeky guidebook offers practical tips and clear, accessible explanations for helping men (and women) better understand the male body, learn to care for it, and become more comfortable speaking about it with their doctors when things go wrong. With plenty of relatable metaphors and a light, conversational tone, Dr. Gralla provides simple, research-based answers to questions such as: Do male enhancement pills actually work? Why does erectile dysfunction happen and how is it treated? What is a “normal” penis―and how big is it really? And much, much more.

A R Markos
R3,134 R2,328 Discovery Miles 23 280 Save R806 (26%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The world-wide prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is a cause of concern for the public and health organisations. Young age of sexual debut, breakdown of relationships, travel, mobility, relationship explorations, social instability, between other socio-economic factors, contribute to the loss monogamous sexual relationships. The resultant multiplicity of sexual relationships predispose to STIs. The Sexually Transmitted Infections book provides an overall practical account for the benefit of generalists and Primary Care physicians, who would encounter the patients' problems first. The emphasis on clinical issues, drawing from the author's 30 years of progressive clinical experience in Primary Care, Urology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Venereology, share expertise with those intending to specialise. Patients who wish to acquire unbiased in depth knowledge about sexually transmitted infections, will find answers to their questions. Many of these questions were asked times and times again by patients who shared similar concerns and anxieties. The book covers a wide range of clinical practices and facilities and addresses areas of low resource settings, which will make the account relevant to developing primary health units.

Handbook of Focal Therapy for Prostate and Renal Cancer (Hardcover): Truls Bjerklund Johansen, Damian Greene, David J Breen,... Handbook of Focal Therapy for Prostate and Renal Cancer (Hardcover)
Truls Bjerklund Johansen, Damian Greene, David J Breen, Vladimir Mouraviev
R2,516 Discovery Miles 25 160 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Prostate cancer is the commonest cancer in men. Current treatments include surgery to remove the whole prostate or radiotherapy of the whole prostate. These radical treatments can treat the cancer effectively but often cause unwanted side effects. Meanwhile widespread screening with prostate-specific antigen has led to an increased diagnosis of localised prostate cancer; at the same time, widespread use of abdominal imaging has led to increased detection of renal masses. In response to demand for improved outcomes with reduced side effects, focal therapy has emerged as an important procedure in managing both prostate and renal cancers. It targets individual areas of cancer, reducing unwanted side effects and the amount of damage to collateral tissue. This new method of treatment has major advantages: it involves less radiation, the removal of less tissue and less time spent in hospital. Handbook of Focal Therapy for Prostate and Renal Cancer provides a comprehensive, timely review of targeted ablation methods to treat prostate and renal cancers. It describes the most effective techniques in current practice, with discussion of the selection criteria, ablation technologies and their limitations, and advice on the management of common side effects. The book opens with a summary of the principles of prostate and renal cancer treatment and the mechanisms of focal therapy. Separate sections on prostate and kidney follow, covering the role of focal therapy, side effects and their treatment and follow-up after targeted ablation. Written in a practical, clinically-oriented style, Handbook of Focal Therapy for Prostate and Renal Cancer is the ideal reference for urologists, radiologists and radiation oncologists wishing to employ the latest focal therapy techniques in the care of their patients.
