This textbook discusses the latest advances in the corrosion of metals and related protection methods, and explores all corrosion-related aspects used in natural and industrial environments, including monitoring and testing. Throughout the textbook, the science and engineering of corrosion are merged to help readers perform correct corrosion assessments in both the design phase and plant management phase, and to define the optimal protection technique. In addition, the book addresses basic aspects of corrosion science, including the electrochemical mechanism, thermodynamic and kinetic aspects, the use of Pourbaix and Evans diagrams, and various forms of corrosion (from uniform to localised to stress corrosion phenomena); as well as the protection systems adopted to combat corrosion, including inhibitors, coatings and cathodic protection. Such basic knowledge is fundamental to understanding the "corrosion engineering" approach applied to the durability of metals immersed in water, buried in soil, exposed to the atmosphere, used in reinforced concrete, in the human body and in petrochemical plants, or at risk of high-temperature corrosion. A final chapter is dedicated to the use of statistics in corrosion. All chapters include exercises and practical examples to help students understand, predict, evaluate and mitigate corrosion problems. As such, the book offers the ideal learning resource for all students of corrosion courses in chemical, mechanical, energy and materials engineering at the graduate and advanced undergraduate level, as well as a valuable reference guide for engineers whose work involves real-world applications.

Aneeya Kumar Samantara, Satyajit Ratha
R1,408 Discovery Miles 14 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book covers the recent development of metal oxides, hydroxides and their carbon composites for electrochemical oxidation of water in the production of hydrogen and oxygen as fuels. It includes a detailed discussion on synthesis methodologies for the metal oxides/hydroxides, structural/morphological characterizations, and the key parameters (Tafel plot, Turnover frequency, Faradic efficiency, overpotential, long cycle life etc.) needed to evaluate the electrocatalytic activity of the materials. Additionally, the mechanism behind the electro oxidation process is presented. Readers will find a comprehensive source on the close correlation between metal oxides, hydroxides, composites, and their properties and importance in the generation of hydrogen and oxygen from water. The depletion of fossil fuels from the earth's crust, and related environmental issues such as climate change, demand that we search for alternative energy resources to achieve some form of sustainable future. In this regard, much scientific research has been devoted to technologies such as solar cells, wind turbines, fuel cells etc. Among them fuel cells attract much attention because of their versatility and efficiency. In fuel cells, different fuels such as hydrogen, CO2, alcohols, acids, methane, oxygen/air, etc. are used as the fuel, and catalysts are employed to produce a chemical reaction for generating electricity. Hence, it is very important to produce these fuels in an efficient, eco-friendly, and cost effective manner. The electrochemical splitting of water is an environmentally friendly process to produce hydrogen (the greener fuel used in fuel cells), but the efficiencies of these hydrogen evolution reactions (cathodic half reaction) are strongly dependent on the anodic half reaction (oxygen evolution reaction), i.e., the better the anodic half, the better will be the cathodic reaction. Further, this oxygen evolution reaction depends on the types of active electrocatalysts used. Though many more synthetic approaches have been explored and different electrocatalysts developed, oxide and hydroxide-based nanomaterials and composites (with graphene, carbon nanotubes etc.) show better performance. This may be due to the availability of more catalytic surface area and electro active centers to carry out the catalysis process.

Short-Channel Organic Thin-Film Transistors - Fabrication, Characterization, Modeling and Circuit Demonstration (Paperback,... Short-Channel Organic Thin-Film Transistors - Fabrication, Characterization, Modeling and Circuit Demonstration (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 2015)
Tarek Zaki
R2,665 Discovery Miles 26 650 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This work takes advantage of high-resolution silicon stencil masks to build air-stable complementary OTFTs using a low-temperature fabrication process. Plastic electronics based on organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) pave the way for cheap, flexible and large-area products. Over the past few years, OTFTs have undergone remarkable advances in terms of reliability, performance and scale of integration. Many factors contribute to the allure of this technology; the masks exhibit excellent stiffness and stability, thus allowing OTFTs with submicrometer channel lengths and superb device uniformity to be patterned. Furthermore, the OTFTs employ an ultra-thin gate dielectric that provides a sufficiently high capacitance to enable the transistors to operate at voltages as low as 3 V. The critical challenges in this development are the subtle mechanisms that govern the properties of aggressively scaled OTFTs. These mechanisms, dictated by device physics, are well described and implemented into circuit-design tools to ensure adequate simulation accuracy.

Toshiaki Ohtsuka, Atsushi Nishikata, Masatoshi Sakairi, Koji Fushimi
R2,038 Discovery Miles 20 380 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This brief is concerned with the fundamentals of corrosion of metallic materials and electrochemistry for better understanding of corrosion phenomena. Corrosion is related to both the environment and material properties, induced by electrochemical reactions at the interface between metallic materials and the environment as in aqueous and gaseous phases. In order to understand corrosion phenomena, knowledge of electrochemistry is thus required, and to investigate the cause of corrosion damage, appropriate electrochemical experiments must be performed. Corrosion scientists should therefore possess knowledge of both electrochemistry and its related experimental techniques. In this book, corrosion phenomena are introduced from the electrochemical aspect. Electrochemical techniques for the study of corrosion are then described with other techniques that can be combined with electrochemistry. Because this brief is characterized as starting with the fundamentals of corrosion and electrochemistry, it is accessible to undergraduate students as well as to graduate students who are beginning corrosion research.
