Kathryn Haynes, Irena Grugulis
R3,503 Discovery Miles 35 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The nature of services in society and the economy is wide-ranging and complex, and the management of services and their innovation provokes a number challenges for practitioners, professionals, and academics. This book provides a range of perspectives on understanding, managing, and reconceptualising service by bringing together contributions from leading figures in service research, to make a timely and significant multi-disciplinary contribution to the theory and practice of service management. The book presents a collection of contemporary perspectives on service management challenges, extending the understanding of service through exploration and critique of service organizational and managerial strategies from selected theoretical and empirical perspectives. Amongst other contributions, it reviews the distinctive role and importance of service to academics, professionals, and practitioners; identifies appropriate bridging strategies; evaluates selected aspects of the practice of service management, and investigates the challenges inherent in managing services; reviews the nature, direction, and applicability of selected theoretical dimensions which inform the understanding of service management; considers contemporary innovations in services and service management; and assesses the opportunities for theory building, to further support understanding of the complexities of service management and its impact on organisations and wider society. It will be of interest to graduate students, academics and practitioners in service management.

The Political Economy of the Service Transition (Paperback): Anne Wren The Political Economy of the Service Transition (Paperback)
Anne Wren
R1,616 Discovery Miles 16 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Over the past four decades the wealthiest OECD economies-in Europe, North America, and Australasia- have faced massive structural change. Industrial sectors, which were once considered the economic backbone of these societies, have shrunk inexorably in terms of size and economic significance, while service sectors have taken over as the primary engines of output and employment expansion. The impact on labor markets has been profound: in many OECD countries more than three-quarters of employment is now in services, while industrial sectors, on average, account for less than one-fifth. This sectoral shift in the locus of economic activity has potentially radical implications for politics and society. However, these implications are only beginning to be understood. This path-breaking book is a systematic attempt to understand the distinct political economy of service societies. It examines how different types of socio-economic regimes manage the service transition, with a central focus on job creation and destruction and the changing characteristics of labor markets, and shows that the economic, distributional, and political outcomes with which it is associated vary across countries depending on their political-institutional structures.

Markets and Bodies - Women, Service Work, and the Making of Inequality in China (Hardcover): Eileen M Otis Markets and Bodies - Women, Service Work, and the Making of Inequality in China (Hardcover)
Eileen M Otis
R2,777 Discovery Miles 27 770 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Insulated from the dust, noise, and crowds churning outside, China's luxury hotels are staging areas for the new economic and political landscape of the country. These hotels, along with other emerging service businesses, offer an important, new source of employment for millions of workers, but also bring to light levels of inequality that surpass most developed nations.
Examining how gender enables the globalization of markets and how emerging forms of service labor are changing women's social status in China, "Markets and Bodies" reveals the forms of social inequality produced by shifts in the economy. No longer working for the common good as defined by the socialist state, service workers are catering to the individual desires of consumers. This economic transition ultimately affords a unique opportunity to investigate the possibilities and current limits for better working conditions for the young women who are enabling the development of capitalism in China.

Value is a most misunderstood and misused word. As it becomes fashionable to create value, more companies are rushing towards the creating value mantra. In so doing, they forget value starvation and value destruction. This book is about value starvation. Value starvation is what happens when you deny a customer very basic needs in doing business with you (and often this is done unwittingly or because companies are too busy "creating Value"). Value starvation occurs when a company posts an old address that is no longer valid, or fails to update a product spec, or does not allow you access to the right person for your solution. An example is an airline changing a flight timing and failing to inform you, or sending your bags to the wrong destination, or a hotelier denying you a hotel room that has been prepaid. Value destruction happens when, knowingly or unknowingly, companies destroy value. This book shows you how to recognize value starvation, how to avoid it and how to prevent it. This will make you and your companies more effective, more customer-centric, and more successful.

Transforming Museums in the Twenty-first Century (Paperback, Revised): Graham Black Transforming Museums in the Twenty-first Century (Paperback, Revised)
Graham Black
R1,562 Discovery Miles 15 620 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In his book, Graham Black argues that museums must transform themselves if they are to remain relevant to 21st century audiences and this root and branch change would be necessary whether or not museums faced a funding crisis. It is the result of the impact of new technologies and the rapid societal developments that we are all a part of, and applies not just to museums but to all arts bodies and to other agents of mass communication.

Through comment, practical examples and truly inspirational case studies, this book allows the reader to build a picture of the transformed 21st century museum in practice. Such a museum is focused on developing its audiences as regular users. It is committed to participation and collaboration. It brings together on-site, online and mobile provision and, through social media, builds meaningful relationships with its users. It is not restricted by its walls or opening hours, but reaches outwards in partnership with its communities and with other agencies, including schools. It is a haven for families learning together. And at its heart lies prolonged user engagement with collections, and the conversations and dialogues that these inspire.

The book is filled to the brim with practical examples. It features:

  • an introduction that focuses on the challenges that face museums in the 21st century
  • an analysis of population trends and their likely impact on museums
  • boxes showing ideas, models and planning suggestions to guide development
  • examples and case studies illustrating practice in both large and small museums
  • an up-to-date bibliography of landmark research, including numerous websites

Sitting alongside Graham Black s previous book, The Engaging Museum, we now have a clear vision of a museum of the future that engages, stimulates and inspires the publics it serves, and plays an active role in promoting tolerance and understanding within and between communities.

Battlefield Events: Landscape, Commemoration and Heritage is an investigative and analytical study into the way in which significant landscapes of war have been constructed and imagined through events over time to articulate specific narratives and denote consequence and identity. The book charts the ways in which a number of landscapes of war have been created and managed from an events perspective, and how the processes of remembering (along with silencing and forgetting) at these places has influenced the management of these warscapes in the present day. With chapters from authors based in seven different countries on three continents and comparative case studies, this book has a truly international perspective. This timely longitudinal analysis of war commemoration events, the associated landscapes, travel to these destinations and management strategies will be valuable reading for all those interested in war landscapes and events.

Vicki Howard
R733 Discovery Miles 7 330 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Named "Best of the Best from the University Presses" for 2007 by the American Library AssociationWeddings today are a $70-billion business, yet no one has explained how the industry has become such a significant component of the American economy. In "Brides, Inc.," Vicki Howard goes behind the scenes of the various firms involved--from jewelers to caterers--to explore the origins of the lavish American wedding, demonstrating the important role commercial interests have played in shaping traditions most of us take for granted.Howard reveals how many of our customs and wedding rituals were the product of sophisticated advertising campaigns, merchandising promotions, and entrepreneurial innovations. Tracing the rise of the wedding industry from the 1920s through the 1950s, the author explains that retailers, bridal consultants, etiquette writers, caterers, and many others invented traditions--from the diamond engagement ring and double-ring ceremony to the gift registry to the package-deal catered affair. These businesses and entrepreneurs, many of them women, transformed wedding culture and set the stage for today's multibillion-dollar industry. The wedding industry began to take shape between the 1920s and the 1950s. Bridal magazine editors and etiquette writers, jewelers, department store window display artists, bridal consultants, fashion designers, and caterers invented new consumer rites and promoted higher standards of wedding consumption. Claiming ties with "ancient customs" and various historical periods, the wedding industry promoted new goods and services as timeless and unchanging. It introduced new ring customs and wedding apparel fashions, and "modern" services, such as gift registries that rationalized gift customs, bridal salons that saved time and made wedding planning more efficient, and wedding packages that standardized ceremonies and reception celebrations.During World War II, the traditional white wedding grew even more prevalent as jewelers and bridal gown manufacturers successfully sought exemptions from wartime restrictions, linking the diamond engagement ring, the double-ring ceremony, and the formal white wedding gown with democracy and American prosperity. By the 1950s, the wedding industry had made the formal white wedding tradition a part of a new cult of marriage and the modern American Dream.Entertaining and informative, "Brides, Inc." reveals the origins and development of this most exemplary American enterprise and brings the story up to the present with a discussion of such new phenomena as David's Bridal and the gay wedding industry.
