This book takes the position that organizations, such as
businesses, government agencies, etc. form a special class of
living system. As such they come into being, live through lifecycle
stages, and can experience organizational health and various forms
of organizational illness along the way. If the latter is frequent
or extended, such organizations often die an untimely death. A
services perspective can go a long way to combat this outcome and
assist in maintaining organizational health. Allowing this
perspective to permeate an organization induces a consideration of
its genuine value and leads to a greater understanding of the
breadth of stakeholders who are the beneficiaries of it.
Productivity and services in an organization are symbiotic-and must
be so in order to achieve the balance that is key to the health of
each organization. A services perspective illuminates as well the
pivotal role that business-to-business service providers play in
ensuring that balance is achieved and maintained. This book
explores these factors from the point of view of the business
leader and anyone concerned with the health of any organization.
In a quickly growing and evolving society, organizations at all
levels face ongoing challenges and complexities that require
specific leadership skills. Contemporary Leadership in Sport
Organizations, Second Edition With HKPropel Access, brings together
research on leadership-both within and outside of sport settings-to
provide comprehensive knowledge of skills and practices relevant to
the sport industry. With sport-specific examples, students will
learn an effective approach to leadership thought, strategy, and
action to apply in recreational, interscholastic, intercollegiate,
and professional sport organizations as well as the rapidly growing
esports industry. Students will first learn the historical and
foundational concepts of leadership, defining what effective
leadership is and the primary outcomes of good leadership.
Contemporary thought and leadership approaches for present-day
challenges are then presented, bringing concepts to life within the
unique contexts of sport organizations of all levels and types.
Modern leadership concepts that are explored include emotional
intelligence and its role in developing authentic leadership,
data-informed decision making and problem solving, behaviors and
actions that are most effective in crisis situations, and the
leadership-as-practice movement. Updates in this edition include
the following: Expanded content on leadership for achieving
diversity, equity, and inclusion in sport organizations, including
new content on LGBTQ+ research in sport Content on global
leadership in sport, including the emergence of esports and sport
as a tool for social change Discussion of ethical decision making
and the challenges and responsibilities for leaders in the
development of the values and culture of an organization New
student learning activities, delivered through HKPropel, are
designed to engage students in a learning experience that turns the
principles learned into practical leadership skills. Case studies
(some of which include video examples) expand on chapter content
and present real-world examples of sport leadership across a broad
range of roles. These contain open-ended discussion questions that
encourage students to think critically about the cases and about
their own future careers. Activities encourage students to put
research into practice, while interactive branching scenarios
immerse students in the decision-making process, applying
strategies presented in the book to navigate through each
simulation to discover the most optimal outcome. Modern sport
organizations at all levels are evolving into increasingly complex
and diverse entities that require adaptable and effective leaders.

Humans spend more time in or on the water than ever before; we love
the beach. But for many people, getting in the water provokes a
moment's hesitation. Shark attacks are big news events and although
the risk of shark attack on humans is incredibly low, the fact
remains that human lives are lost to sharks every year. Shark
Attacks explores the tension between risk and human fear and the
need to conserve sharks and protect the important ecological roles
they play in our marine environments. Marine biologist Blake
Chapman presents scientific information about shark biology,
movement patterns and feeding behaviour. She discusses the role of
fear in the way we think about sharks and the influence of the
media on public perceptions. Moving first-hand accounts describe
the deep and polarising psychological impacts of shark attacks from
a range of perspectives. This book is an education in thinking
through these emotive events and will help readers to navigate the
controversial issues around mitigating shark attacks while
conserving the sharks themselves. FeaturesClarifies what is fact
and what is fiction with regards to shark attack statistics and
explains why the fear of sharks and shark attacks is so prevalent
in modern society Discusses personal and regional mitigation
devices and measures as well as the pros and cons of each of these
Provides suggestions on how we can better manage the risk (real and
perceived) of shark attack into the future Provides a range of
personal accounts and public opinions on shark attack to round out
our understanding of these events and to provide support for gaps
in current policy
Tourism destinations are traditionally dominated by small and
medium-sized enterprises that provide a wide range of products to
tourists such as accommodation, travel services, transportation,
recreation and entertainment, and food and beverage services. New
knowledge and global risks have emerged, and small and medium-sized
tourism enterprises (SMTEs) are now highly vulnerable. Recently,
the COVID-19 pandemic has hit the whole world and caused a change
in the tourism paradigm. Many SMTEs around the world have been
severely affected by the need to completely shut down their
activities for months, and expectations for recovery in the medium
term are not optimistic. SMTEs do not have the capacity and
increased resources-financial, human, operational-of large
companies to prepare for crisis contingencies (planning) and
respond to the challenges they face. They simply do not have the
resources or knowledge for risk analysis and the creation of crisis
teams or plans. This is an area of growing importance and concern,
both in the public and private sectors, where specific research and
more in-depth knowledge are needed. Risk, Crisis, and Disaster
Management in Small and Medium-Sized Tourism Enterprises connects
research in the field of crisis management with the risks affecting
small and medium-sized tourism enterprises. The book presents
prevailing research on SME-related planning, response, and recovery
during crisis situations, further propelling much-needed literature
on these challenges in today's tourism industry. The chapters cover
important topics such as terrorism threats, disaster management,
resilient strategies, pandemic management, and risk analysis. The
target audience of this book will be composed of professionals
working in the tourism and hospitality industries, restaurateurs,
travel agencies, hotel executives, directors, managers, crisis and
risk planners, policymakers, government officials, researchers, and
academicians who are interested in the threats to tourism
businesses and how small and medium-sized enterprises can manage
and navigate these risks.
Almost all economies have, or are at least starting to, understand
the significance of examining and mainstreaming gender issues in
the world of work. Sociocultural evolution and various other
factors have helped these developments, but there is still so much
more work to be done. Technology has played a substantial role in
decreasing the gender divide as more households than ever before
have access to technology, and the revolution of access to
information across most societies has become gender neutral and
empowering. While technology can hold the potential to
significantly expand the job market and open opportunities for all
job seekers, questions surrounding automation and availability of
jobs and the accessibility to secure the necessary qualifications
and education needed to fill paid jobs rage on, especially when
examining those who are typically marginalized. Gender Perspectives
on Industry 4.0 and the Impact of Technology on Mainstreaming
Female Employment discusses gender perspective and its impact on
the fourth industrial revolution, particularly in the realm of
employment structure, and analyzes the impact of technology on
mainstreaming women in paid employment. In the present environment,
organizations are beginning to realize the importance of looking
more critically at their workforce and structure and how to better
cater to the diversity, equity, and inclusion movement while also
productively managing the advancement of new technologies. Covering
topics such as sustainable development and the future of work, it
is ideal for policymakers, practitioners, professionals,
consultants, managers, researchers, academicians, educators, and
students.
