He and his team are sent to Cairo in 1979 to plan the modernization of Egypt's phone service. Phone service at that point is bad. Most of the time there is no dial tone. They think their work can be accomplished in about nine months, but Willis Culpepper of USAID tells them "Schedules don't mean a thang here in Egypt." They learn that ARENTO wants technology transfer, plus system redesign, so the nine months will stretch to a year or two. Working with the Egyptians, they see the sorry state of the telephone system, first in Cairo, then in Alexandria. Underground cables failed because of water seeping into the insulation. In between they visit Cairo's Souk, Khan El Khalili, and El Alemein. He takes morning runs beside the Pyramids, sometimes enraging the rabid mongrel desert dogs. Bitten, he requires rabies injections. There are no good maps of the cities. His team consults with USAID, and gets the Air Force to do aerial photography of Cairo, and Alexandria. An accelerated course on ESS is given to six Egyptian engineers, and the planning stage is finished at last. Construction contractors are selected through a formal bidding process, and final construction of the upgrade is completed in 1983. Egypt gets the most modern telephone system at the time, but scam artists are still at work at cut-over.
Many of the people I counseled would ask what they could do if they got stuck, again. They wanted to know if there was something they could do on their own instead of coming back to counseling. They asked me to give them some background on how I was able to help them resolve their conflicts and provide them with a step-by-step guide to repair their relationships again. This book is the response to that request. The book is based on the ZG method which I used in counseling for over ten years. This isn't a book of helpful hints from some expert; rather it promotes change by asking future-oriented questions so the participants can find their own solutions. Following this method is as simple as following the script with over thirty sample questions to choose from. Directions are given on what to say and what not to say. Other parts of the book stress how to stay positive and utilize a person's strengths through the whole process. The theory behind the ZG method is discussed and the actual mechanics of the method are explained in great detail. The book talks about positive change and how to bring it about, using many examples. It explains in great detail, using a step-by-step format, how to use the ZG method at home and in the workplace to resolve conflicts. Another advantage of using this method is that it doesn't go to the past and revisit past hurts, so it isn't a painful experience. In A Miracle in Waiting Paul Hellyer pulls no punches. First published in 1996 under the title Surviving the Global Financial Crisis: The Economics of Hope for Generation X Hellyer maintained that the monetarist counter-revolution has been one monumental flop and predicted in the first two paragraphs that a meltdown was inevitable. The entire book was prophetic and should be read in that context. Hellyer argued that the federal deficit is nothing but a red herring that detracts from more fundamental issues such as the monetary system which, stripped of all the holy water that has been poured on it over the years, is nothing more than the perpetuation of a scam developed by the English goldsmiths more than three hundred years ago - a scam that has turned out to be the most profitable in history. This book removes the veil from the mystery of money. Nearly all money is simply virtual - computer entries by highly leveraged privately-owned banks that create money out of thin air. Worse, they are allowed to lend their capital up to twenty times or more and collect interest on it each time. Still worse many of the loans are made to hedge funds and the financial industry that make huge profits without creating any new real wealth that is tangible and useful. Hellyer's book explains exactly what has to be done. Bank ratios have to be reduced dramatically. At the same time the proportion of money created by governments (who own the patent on behalf of the people) has to be substantially increased. This will allow the fiscal flexibility necessary to balance their budgets and help finance critically important projects such as the transformation from an oil economy to one based on clean fuels. Many other major problems could be solved by a substantial infusion of debt free money.
This book is about three challenges facing business today. First is the coming huge labor shortage as Baby Boomer Generation retires. For every 5 Boomers that retire, there will only be 4 Generation X or Yers to replace them. For example, the Bureaucratic Management System is designed to resist change and maintain the status quo, but the need today is for rapid adaptability so that business can be responsive to the ever changing demands of the customer.
