R707 Discovery Miles 7 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Latina/o/x places exist as both tangible physical phenomena and gatherings created and maintained by creative cultural practices. In this collection, an interdisciplinary group of contributors critically examines the many ways that varied Latina/o/x communities cohere through cultural expression. Authors consider how our embodied experiences of place, together with our histories and knowledge, inform our imagination and reimagination of our surroundings in acts of placemaking. This placemaking often considers environmental sustainability as it helps to sustain communities in the face of xenophobia and racism through cultural expression ranging from festivals to zines to sanctuary movements. It emerges not only in specific locations but as movement within and between sites; not only as part of a built environment, but also as an aesthetic practice; and not only because of efforts by cultural, political, and institutional leaders, but through mass media and countless human interactions. A rare and crucial perspective on Latina/o/x people in the Midwest, Building Sustainable Worlds reveals how expressive culture contributes to, and sustains, a sense of place in an uncertain era.

Psychology of Entertainment (Hardcover): Jennings Bryant, Peter Vorderer Psychology of Entertainment (Hardcover)
Jennings Bryant, Peter Vorderer
R5,378 Discovery Miles 53 780 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As entertainment becomes a trillion-dollar-a-year industry worldwide, as our modern era increasingly lives up to its label of the "entertainment age," and as economists begin to recognize that entertainment has become the driving force of the new world economy, it is safe to say that scholars are beginning to take entertainment seriously. The scholarly spin on entertainment has been manifested in traditional ways, as well as innovative ones. Representing the current state of theory and research, Psychology of Entertainment promises to be the most comprehensive and up-to-date volume on entertainment. It serves to define the new area of study and provides a theoretical spin for future work in the area. Divided into three basic parts, this book: *addresses the fundamental mechanisms and processes involved in orienting to and selecting entertainment fare, as well as receiving and processing it; *explores the mechanisms and processes by which we are entertained by the media messages we select and receive; and *provides an opportunity for the application of well-established as well as emerging psychological and psychobiological theories to be applied to the study of entertainment in ways that seldom have been utilized previously. Psychology of Entertainment will appeal to scholars, researchers, and graduate students in media studies and mass communication, psychology, marketing, and other areas contributing to the entertainment studies area.

Wigan has been an important town throughout history. It was granted market charters in 1246 and was the centre of the Banastre Rebellion in the next century. In the English Civil War it was the site of the Battle of Wigan Lane in 1651. Wigan expanded during the Industrial Revolution through its coal mining, engineering and textile industries and with the opening of the Leeds–Liverpool Canal and the arrival of the railway. The social conditions which resulted from this rapid change were written about by George Orwell in The Road to Wigan Pier. The town is also noted for its entertainers and actors George Formby, Ian McKellen and Roy Kinnear. As well as its Rugby League Club, the Wigan Warriors, there is Wigan Athletic Football Club which won the FA Cup in 2012. A–Z of Wigan reveals the history behind Wigan, its streets and buildings, businesses and the people connected with the town. Alongside the famous historical connections are unusual characters, tucked-away places and unique events that are less well-known. Readers will discover tales of an opera singer who captivated Hitler and spied for Britain, all-night dancing at the home of Northern Soul and a fatal Zeppelin raid among many other fascinating facts in this A–Z tour of Wigan’s past. Fully illustrated, it will appeal to all those with an interest in this historic town.

From the author of Serial Griller and South’s Best Butts, a cookbook of more than 125 everyday specialty recipes plus meaty stories and secret tips from butchers everywhere. Sometimes, the best way to get the best recipes is to just talk to your butcher. It’s an age-old adage that Matt Moore, author of Serial Griller and South's Best Butts and grandson of a butcher, took to heart—he’s traveled around the country and beyond to do just that. In Butcher on the Block, he shares stories, coveted family recipes, and expert tips from the people behind the counter who sell your meats, poultry, fish, vegetables, and trimmings. This all-inclusive book is carved into three separate sections: Butchering Primer, a quick prep of what a home cook might need to begin butchering at home, including step-by-step photographs of how to break down a chicken, fillet a fish, prep a bone-in pork chop, and slice up a beef tenderloin. Butcher Profiles, with behind-the-counter access and specialty recipes from renowned butchers and butcher shops around the world, including Hing Lung Company in San Francisco; Cara Mangini, author of The Vegetable Butcher; Red’s Best in Boston; Maison Mallard in France; and Tommie Kelly—the butcher at Matt’s own local Kroger’s. With recipes like Grilled Honey BBQ Chicken Wings with Ginger Scallion Sauce, DiSalvo’s Porchetta, and Matt’s grandfather’s Kibbeh Nayyeh (Lebanese-style tartare), you can simultaneously travel the country and meet the butcher on your block. And lastly, Matt’s own highly praised recipes, for grilling, barbecue, and all-around cooking to further your own butchering techniques—or to just cook what you get from the butcher’s. Recipes cover it all, from appetizers, sides, salads to meaty mains (including game) and vegetables—even desserts and drinks: Grilled Corn “Ribs” Bacon Buttermilk Cornbread Egg Drop Soup with Pork Belly Cracklins Roasted Bone Marrow with Country Bread Hangar Steak “New-Vide” Catch-all Paella Bacon Boulevardier Alaskan Ice Cream If you’re looking for exciting new cooking techniques, delicious recipes, good stories, and to support and celebrate local businesses, look no further than Butcher on the Block.

Evelyn Lord, Nicholas R. Amor
R576 Discovery Miles 5 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Dr David Dymond is one of Britain’s most highly respected local historians. He is a Vice President of the British Association for Local History and of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History, President of the Suffolk Records Society, and an honorary fellow of the University of East Anglia. The author of several valued books about the practice of local history, notably Researching and Writing History, his contribution to the study of local history generally, and in his adopted county of Suffolk in particular, has been immensely influential. The essays in this Festschrift are offered as a token of esteem and affection by colleagues, friends and students of David. They consist of new research on aspects of local history from the medieval period to the twentieth century, with a particular focus on Eastern England. Taken together, they illustrate David’s philosophy of local history (that it should be ‘wide ranging, inclusive, integrating and interdisciplinary’). In his introduction, Professor Mark Bailey pays tribute to the breadth and depth of David’s scholarship and to his passion for teaching. These essays, in turn, aim to reflect the values that have always characterised David’s approach: a focus on primary sources meticulously interrogated and a concern to avoid the pitfalls of parochialism by remaining sensitive to the wider influences upon communities. From papers exploring aspects of medieval religion, the contributors move on to medieval trade and industry in Norfolk, Suffolk and Lincolnshire. Two studies of the structures of local elites provide fresh insights into communities at later periods, while the final selection of essays consider fascinating and wide-ranging aspects of nineteenth- and twentieth-century commerce, society and culture. The very varied contributions to this collection aptly reflect the breadth and depth of David Dymond’s own scholarship whilst offering a rich choice of material to anyone with an interest in local history.
