Among South Carolina's many treasures is Charleston, a city
of rich history. Since the first British colonists
established Charles Towne in 1670, this city has been a study in
contradictions – a beautiful coastal environment, magnificent
architecture, and sometimes unspeakable cruelty. Haunted
Charleston, a collection of stories of ghosts, mysteries, and
paranormal happenings in the Holy City, will leave
readers frightened and fascinated. Haunted Charleston
includes twenty-five stories from the Ghosts at Dock Street Theater
to the Haunted Graveyards, that will send chills up the spines of
even the most daring ghosthunters. Each story includes notes
on historical significance and local lore and readers will discover
just how haunted and spooky this city is. A bibliography, a
resources list of contact information to visit the haunted sites,
and a brief “Ghost Hunter’s Guide” for the region or city,
are also included, giving readers the resources to explore the
haunted areas for themselves.
In the 19th century, Daniel Waggoner and his son, W.T. (Tom), put
together an empire in North Texas that became the largest ranch
under one fence in the nation. The 520,000-plus acres or 800 square
miles covers six counties and sits on a large oil field in the Red
River Valley of North Texas. Over the years, the estate also owned
five banks, three cottonseed oil mills, and a coal company.
Headquarters are in an office building in Vernon. Estimated value
last quoted was $300 million. The history is colorful. Although Dan
seems to have led a fairly low-profile life, W. T. moved to Fort
Worth, became a bank director, built two office buildings, ran his
cattle on the Big Pasture in Indian Territory (Oklahoma), hosted
Teddy Roosevelt at a wolf hunt in the Big Pasture, and sent Quanah
Parker to Washington, D.C., for Roosevelt’s inauguration. W. T.
had three children including his daughter, Electra, the light of
his life. W. T. built a mansion in Fort Worth for her—today
the house, the last surviving cattle baron mansion on Fort
Worth’s Silk Stocking Row, is open to the public for tours and
events. Electra, an international celebrity and extravagant shopper
(she once spent $10,000 in one day at Neiman Marcus), died at the
age of forty-three. W.T.’s brother Guy had nine wives; his
brother E. Paul, partier and horse breeder, was married to the same
woman for fifty years and had one daughter, Electra II. Electra II
was a both a celebrity and a talented sculptor, best known for a
heroic-size state of Will Rogers on his horse, Soapsuds, as well as
busts of two presidents and various movie stars. She is said to
once have been involved with Cary Grant. After marriage to an
executive she settled in a mansion at the ranch and raised two
daughters. This book tells the story of the Wagonner women and
their need to do something with the restless energy they possessed.
The women did not have—or did not choose—ranching as an outlet
for their strong personalities. The story is also about the
juxtaposition of a love of the land versus the self-indulgent love
of money—a common theme among ranch families that led to the
dissolution of many.

Discover how to cook these vibrant southern Mediterranean flavours
at home with 100 wonderful recipes from Ben Tish. The bold spices
and sun-soaked exotic tastes of North Africa and the Arabic world
collided with the characterful food of the Mediterranean when the
Moors invaded. It was this glorious fusion of flavours that first
seduced British chef, writer and restaurateur, Ben Tish, and sent
his cooking on a new course. Moorish is a collection of authentic
recipes inspired by Ben’s passion for the region, along with a
few of his own twists and interpretations. He has divided the book
into chapters based around the way he likes to cook at home –
from quick and refreshing light bites and his notorious barbecue
food to lazy brunches and slow-cooked dishes that fill the house
with evocative scents of the Mediterranean.
Although the representatives from the Penobscot Nation and the
Passamaquoddy Tribe don't have voting power on the house floor,
they serve on committees and may chair committees. Donna's first
session as representative of the Penobscot Nation was a difficult
one a personal struggle to have a voice, but also because of the
issues: changing offensive names, teaching Native American history
in Maine schools, casinos and racinos, and the interpretation of
sovereign rights for tribes. Some of the struggles and issues
remain as she continues to serve, and the perspective she offers as
a Native American and as a legislator is both valuable and
fascinating.

Find the Perfect Bottle of Wine Every Time...For most everyone,
tasting and pairing wine can be a complex, confusing, and
intimidating undertaking. Not anymore thanks to Drink
Progressively. From Hadley and TJ Douglas, the wine experts and
owners of Boston’s popular Urban Grape, Drink Progressively
offers an easy and enjoyable method for discovering wines you’ll
love and expert advice on how to pair them with your favorite
dishes. Urban Grape’s “Progressive Scale”, a unique way of
organizing wine from light-bodied to full-bodied, is all you need
to make the puzzle pieces of wine fall into place. The
lightest-bodied wines, comparable to skim milk in texture, start
off the scale at 1, while the full-bodied wines, correlating to
heavy cream, sit atop the scale at 10. Grasping this simple
principle is the key to demystifying the challenge of food and wine
pairings. With Drink Progressively, you’ll find everything you
need to select the perfect wine for any occasion, including Hadley
and TJ’s favorite regions and varietals from each progressive
category; what to eat (and what to avoid) with each wine type;
expert hints, tips, and know-how to make you wine savvy at home,
any restaurant, and in your favorite wine shop; and delicious
recipe pairings from Gabriel Frasca, executive chef of
Nantucket’s acclaimed Straight Wharf. Brimming with interesting,
fun, and useful wine advice, Drink Progressively is the ideal book
for anyone who enjoys wine or wants to learn how.
Enter the fucked up minds of your everyday houseplants in this
humorous guide to their thoughts, dating preferences, and more!
Plants: you may not think that they are thinking, but you thought
wrong because they are. You may mistakenly believe that the plants
in your own home and garden are completely preoccupied with
producing chlorophyll, but, as this book will illustrate, they have
much more interesting, devious, and possibly dangerous things going
on in their tangled minds.
"In this gorgeous, aspirational work, Burns, editor-in-chief of
Kinfolk magazine, collects 'stories about nature as nourishment'
along with photographs from homes across the globe to inspire
people to bring more nature into their own abodes. . . . Expertly
evoking a mood of understated luxury, this stunning spread will
have design junkies drooling." -Publishers Weekly A gardener with a
secret oasis on a Parisian rooftop. An artist making faux flowers
to brighten Manhattan apartments. A family of ranchers rewilding
the American outback. Anchored around the idea of nature as
nourishment, The Kinfolk Garden explores lush gardens and plant
filled homes around the world and introduces the inspiring people
who coax them into bloom. Through visits to friends old and new,
the Kinfolk team learns the secrets to a good garden, and what good
a garden can do for our self-care, creativity and communities.
Though many of the people we meet along the way champion the idea
of following natural instincts rather than a set of prescriptive
garden rules, there are practical tips throughout the book that
offer advice on everything from growing your own produce to
foraging for artful arrangements to simply keeping your houseplants
alive a little longer than usual. The Kinfolk Garden is an
invitation to engage with nature-to care for it, create with its
beauty and cultivate new relationships around it-and offers
inspiration and guidance to anyone looking to bring a little more
greenery into their life.

In Botanical Style, popular stylist and bestselling author
Selina Lake brings her signature romantic vintage style to the
current trend for all things botanical. The first chapter,
Botanical Inspirations, sets out the ingredients of the look
– antique botanical prints and artworks, flower stalls,
potting sheds and houseplants – as sources of fresh ideas
to transform your home. Moving on, Selina explores five different
facets of the style. Vintage Botanicals celebrates the gentle
palette of floral watercolours and pressed flowers, while Boho
Botanicals has a free-spirited 1970s vibe, with jungly potted
plants and flower garlands. The varied textures and contemporary
appeal of Industrial Botanicals give it a modern edge, combining
polished concrete, rusted metal and laboratory glass with peeling
paint and vintage science posters. Next, Natural Botanicals is
based around antique prints and museum specimen cases for a
nostalgic feel, while Tropical Botanicals features bold leafy
motifs, cacti and palm trees for a glamorous retro flavour.
Throughout the book, Selina’s DIY Makes and Style Tips provide
suggestions for how to recreate the textures, tones and ambience of
botanical style at home. First published in 2016, this is a
new edition.
