Death, Taxes, and Leaky Waders collects forty of John Gierach's finest essays on fishing from six of his books. Like all his writing, these essays are seasoned by a keen sense of observation and a deep knowledge and love of fishing lore, leavened by a wonderfully wry sense of humor. Gierach often begins with an observation that soon leads to something below the surface, which he finds and successfully lands. As Gierach says, writing is a lot like fishing. This is the first anthology of John Gierach's work, a collection that is sure to delight both die-hard fans and new readers alike. To enter Gierach's world is to experience the daily wonder, challenge, and occasional absurdity of the fishing life -- from such rituals as the preparation of camp coffee (for best results, serve in a tin cup) to the random, revelatory surprises, such as the flashing beauty of a grayling leaping out of the water. Whether he's catching fish or musing on the ones that got away, Gierach is always entertaining and enlightening, writing with his own inimitable blend of grace and style, passion and wit.
Much more than a cookbook offering a breadth of delicious recipes that honor ethnic traditions and religious customs, this text provides readers with an understanding and appreciation of customs and rites of passage from around the world. International Cookbook of Life-Cycle Celebrations takes readers on a journey around the world and back with an overview of religious customs, specific cultural traditions, and delicious recipes. Readers will learn about unique customs and traditions from more than 150 countries relevant to birth celebrations to weddings to funeral rituals. Although the text is rich with detail, the presentation of information is accessible to general readers and the recipes are kept simple so students of all ages and cooking abilities can execute the dishes and enjoy the results. Organized by continent, region, and then country, the book begins with an overview of religious customs as well as safety and cleanliness tips for cooks. After the introduction, the chapters present information on each country with the specific customs and recipes that correspond to that ethnicity's traditions. The recipes are easy to follow and provide alternatives to complex or hard-to-find ingredients that can be used without jeopardizing the flavor and taste of the end result.
Boundaries, borders and shelter are essential parts of any garden, but they can be the most difficult to get right. The excitement of buying new hedging plants can quickly be overtaken by difficult upkeep, damage to surrounding plants and a costly waste of time. Whether you’re planting a new hedge from scratch, restoring a neglected one or creating softer internal divides within the garden, this book provides the planning, planting and maintenance know-how to do it right, first time. Coverage includes: assessment, preparation and design advice for establishing a new living boundary; advice on dealing with existing boundaries in need of restoration or extension; considerations to take into account for both your human and wildlife neighbours and finally, there are directories of hedging plants, climbers and trees to aid your selection.
History Today carried a feature in 2015, describing The Origin of Museums as "a cult book [that] spawned a new discipline in the history of collecting". Indeed, the first publication of this book in 1985 undoubtedly marked a propitious moment in the development of interest, in what has since grown to be a dynamic subject-area in its own right. That an appetite for such matters was already there is confirmed by the fact that the first impression sold out within a few months, a second impression a year or two later, and the third in 1989. There was to be no further printing by the original publishers, Oxford University Press. However in 2001 a new edition appeared with a new publisher. Demand again proved buoyant, but within a few months the company failed; having operated on a print-on-demand basis, it left behind it no unsold stock. The Origins of Museums reverted to a scarce (though much sought-after) volume. With original copies now selling for hundreds, if not thousands of pounds, the Ashmolean is proud to make this important volume readily available again.

With Natural Kitchen Dyes you can explore the magical world of natural dyes, without the need of a garden full of dye plants. Our kitchens are a great source of natural dye colours, from vegetable peels that create blush pinks and peaches, fruit skins that make lemon yellows, a green dye sourced from carrot tops, dried spices and used tea bags to create vibrant yellows, rich terracottas and deep browns. Natural Kitchen Dyes takes you through the exciting process of creating these wonderful natural colours, dyeing fabric with the dyes and suggests ingenious ways to get your hands on some natural dye sources. Accompanying the natural dye recipes in the book are ten environmentally conscious projects, which have been created not only to show off the natural dyes beautifully, but to help eliminate waste. Several of the projects actually utilise waste that would otherwise be composted or recycled such as old clothes turned into bags and patchwork floor cushions, to dried pulses past their expiration date used to make a beaded necklace.

Throughout his life, clothes have provided an outlet through which journalist Teo van den Broeke understands both himself and the world around him. From the blue princess dress he coveted as a child, that first led him to question whether he was ‘normal’, through to the Nike cap and Gucci loafers he wore to impress the men he first desired, fabric has long enveloped and shaped his formative moments. Using the wardrobe of his past as a lens through which to explore the myriad trials and tribulations of adolescence, The Closet charts Teo’s growth from uncertainty to self-acceptance. Courageously recounting his sexual awakening, the all too familiar hesitancy around his adult future – and his many, often tumultuous, relationships with family and friends – Teo learns that it is only in celebrating our differences that we can learn to fully embrace the brilliance within ourselves.

'Peculiarly hilarious!' - William Gibson 'Every page is a pleasure' - Lindsey FItzharris 'Utterly charming' - Tom Holland 'Laugh-out-loud' - Garth Nix 'A must read' - Fergus Butler-Gallie 'Brims with self-effacing charm' - Caitlin Doughty 'Unfortunately I have mislaid the book in question' - Neil Gaiman Welcome to Sotheran's, one of the oldest bookshops in the world, with its weird and wonderful clientele, suspicious cupboards, unlabelled keys, poisoned books and some things that aren't even books, presided over by one deeply eccentric apprentice. Some years ago, Oliver Darkshire stepped into the hushed interior of Henry Sotheran Ltd on Sackville Street (est. 1761) to interview for their bookselling apprenticeship, a decision which has bedevilled him ever since. He'd intended to stay for a year before launching into some less dusty, better remunerated career. Unfortunately for him, the alluring smell of old books and the temptation of a management-approved afternoon nap proved irresistible. Soon he was balancing teetering stacks of first editions, fending off nonagenarian widows with a ten-foot pole and trying not to upset the store's resident ghost (the late Mr Sotheran had unfinished business when he was hit by that tram). For while Sotheran's might be a treasure trove of literary delights, it sings a siren song to eccentrics. There are not only colleagues whose tastes in rare items range from the inspired to the mildly dangerous, but also zealous collectors seeking knowledge, curios, or simply someone with whom to hold a four hour conversation about books bound in human skin. By turns unhinged and earnestly dog-eared, Once Upon a Tome is the rather colourful story of life in one of the world's oldest bookshops and a love letter to the benign, unruly world of antiquarian bookselling, where to be uncommon or strange is the best possible compliment.
The ultimate design bible for the Victorian home, placing period features and 19th-century design in context and exploring how today’s designers are adapting these houses in innovative ways for contemporary lifestyles. With a fifth of the UK’s population living in a Victorian home, how to style and adapt these 19th-century properties to contemporary living is always on trend. While Pinterest, Instagram and magazines can offer flashes of inspiration to those looking to design their Victorian home, Victorian Modern provides in-depth information and context, not only on why Victorian houses were built and designed as they are, but also how modern designers are adapting and styling these houses in fresh and innovative ways that are sympathetic to the period, while bringing them up-to-date for the way we live today. Victorian Modern comprises seven chapters, organized according to how we use our homes: dining, cooking, entertaining, sleeping, bathing, working, along with transitional spaces (hallways, boot rooms and garden rooms). Each chapter explains how the Victorians designed and decorated these spaces, before moving on to their modern interpretations. Sprinkled throughout are practical decorating tips and information on the origins of the architectural features of the period. Combining cultural context with advice and inspiration from the homes of interior designers, architects and stylists, Victorian Modern reveals how the history and design of nineteenth-century homes can influence and inform our modern lifestyles and home decor in fresh and interesting ways. |
