Interpreter Training in Context - European and Chinese Models Reconsidered (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Jie Liu Interpreter Training in Context - European and Chinese Models Reconsidered (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Jie Liu
R2,879 Discovery Miles 28 790 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book addresses an important, yet under-researched domain in interpreting education: how theoretical training models should be responsive to context. To do so, it applies the linguistic concept of 'context' to interpreting studies by investigating practices in representative (conference) interpreting training programmes in Europe and China. After presenting an overview of interpreter training programmes, the author describes the need to reassess the applicability of the well-established and widely accepted model of interpreting from the Paris School (ESIT/AIIC model) to the Chinese interpreting training scene. Building on the theoretical study of context in foreign language classrooms suggested by linguists like Halliday and Hasan (1993); Kramsch (1993) and others, the author subsequently constructs a new curriculum, comprising a four-step approach to consecutive interpreting courses in the Chinese context. The rationale for such an approach is justified in accordance with the overall design of context, taking into account the four dimensions in a teaching-learning environment. This book is intended for scholars and graduate students who are interested in translation and interpreting, applied linguistics as well as foreign language education. It also serves as a practical guide for developing (university-level) translation and interpreting programmes.

Julian Chen
R4,343 Discovery Miles 43 430 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This timely volume addresses issues pertaining to language teaching, learning and research during the pandemic. In times of a global emergency, the aftermath of emergency remote teaching (ERT) cannot be ignored. This volume comprises two parts: Teacher Voice vicariously transports readers to practitioners' compelling stories of how teacher resilience, identity and professional development are crystallized in adaptive pedagogy, online teaching practicum, virtual study programs and communities of practice during ERT. The second part, Researcher Corner, showcases innovative approaches for both novice and seasoned researchers to upskill their toolkits, ranging from case study research and mixed methods designs, to auto- and virtual ethnography and social media research. The array of food for thought provides a positive outlook and inspires us to rethink our current practices and future directions in the post-COVID world. Postmonolingual Transnational Chinese Education (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Yu Han, Xiaoyan Ji Postmonolingual Transnational Chinese Education (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Yu Han, Xiaoyan Ji
R1,232 Discovery Miles 12 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines Transnational Chinese Language Education (TCLE) in the Australian context. Taking a post-monolingual perspective, the authors examine Chinese teachers' monolingual and multilingual practices and mindsets in their educational practices. They find that a Chinese-centric monolingual mindset dominates the Chinese teachers, while a multilingual mindset permeates in their classroom teaching, creating an unconscious tension between the two perspectives. The book proposes that it is the responsibility of teacher educators to train future Chinese teachers with an awareness of this issue, as well as suitable strategies to overcome it and be efficient language teachers. This book will be of interest to applied linguists, pre-service and in-service language teachers, as well as students and scholars of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL).

Claudio Paolucci
R2,873 Discovery Miles 28 730 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This volume serves as a reference on the field of cognitive semantics. It offers a systematic and original discussion of the issues at the core of the debate in semiotics and the cognitive sciences. It takes into account the problems of representation, the nature of mind, the structure of perception, beliefs associated with habits, social cognition, autism, intersubjectivity and subjectivity. The chapters in this volume present the foundation of semiotics as a theory of cognition, offer a semiotic model of cognitive integration that combines Enactivism and the Extended Mind Theory, and investigate the role of imagination as the origin of perception. The author develops an account of beliefs that are associated with habits and meaning, grounded in Pragmatism, testing his Narrative Practice Semiotic Hypothesis on persons with autism spectrum disorders. He also integrates his ideas about the formation of the theory of mind with a theory of subjectivity, understood as self-consciousness which derives from semiotic cognitive abilities. This text appeals to students, professors and researchers in the field.

Does Spelling Matter? (Hardcover, New): Simon Horobin Does Spelling Matter? (Hardcover, New)
Simon Horobin
R1,216 Discovery Miles 12 160 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book narrates the history of English spelling from the Anglo-Saxons to the present-day, charting the various changes that have taken place and the impact these have had on the way we spell today. While good spelling is seen as socially and educationally desirable, many people struggle to spell common words like accommodate, occurrence, dependent. Is it our spelling system that is to blame, and should we therefore reform English spelling to make it easier to learn? Or are such calls for change further evidence of the dumbing-down of our educational standards, also witnessed by the tolerance of poor spelling in text-messaging and email? This book evaluates such views by considering previous attempts to reform the spelling of English and other languages, while also looking critically at claims that the electronic age heralds the demise of correct spelling.

China English in World Englishes - Education and Use in the Professional World (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Deyuan He China English in World Englishes - Education and Use in the Professional World (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Deyuan He
R3,346 Discovery Miles 33 460 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book fills the gap in World Englishes studies in terms of the pedagogic implication of China English and its use in the Chinese workplace. Using three triangulated methods, namely, questionnaire survey, matched-guise technique, and focused interview, the book adopts an innovative research methodology that combines quantitative and qualitative data from 3,493 participants. Overall, the participants still believe that the standardized Englishes are desirable models of English in China and that China English should be well codified and promoted before being adopted as the pedagogic model. In addition, the book proposes that the curriculum design of university English should include an introduction to the well-defined characteristics of China English and world Englishes. Last but not least, the book reveals that English is being used more widely and frequently in the professional world than before and has become increasingly important in China.

Translation Under Communism (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Christopher Rundle, Ann E Lange, Daniele Monticelli Translation Under Communism (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Christopher Rundle, Ann E Lange, Daniele Monticelli
R4,330 Discovery Miles 43 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines the history of translation under European communism, bringing together studies on the Soviet Union, including Russia and Ukraine, Yugoslavia, Hungary, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria, and Poland. In any totalitarian regime maintaining control over cultural exchange is strategically important, so studying these regimes from the perspective of translation can provide a unique insight into their history and into the nature of their power. This book is intended as a sister volume to Translation Under Fascism (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010) and adopts a similar approach of using translation as a lens through which to examine history. With a strong interdisciplinary focus, it will appeal to students and scholars of translation studies, translation history, censorship, translation and ideology, and public policy, as well as cultural and literary historians of Eastern Europe, Soviet communism, and the Cold War period.

Minimal Languages in Action (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Cliff Goddard Minimal Languages in Action (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Cliff Goddard
R2,681 Discovery Miles 26 810 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This edited book explores the rising interest in minimal languages - radically simplified languages using cross-translatable words and grammar, fulfilling the widely-recognised need to use language which is clear, accessible and easy to translate. The authors draw on case studies from around the world to demonstrate how early adopters have been putting Minimal English, Minimal Finnish, and other minimal languages into action: in language teaching and learning, 'easy language' projects, agricultural development training, language revitalisation, intercultural education, paediatric assessment, and health messaging. As well as reporting how minimal languages are being put into service, the contributors explore how minimal languages can be adapted, localised and implemented differently for different purposes. Like its predecessor Minimal English for a Global World: Improved Communication Using Fewer Words (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018), the book will appeal to students and scholars of applied linguistics, language education and translation studies, as well as to professionals in any field where accessibility and translatability matter.

Jane B. Childers
R4,639 Discovery Miles 46 390 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines the role of experience-based learning on children's acquisition of language and concepts. It reviews, compares, and contrasts accounts of how the opportunity to recognize and generalize patterns influences learning. The book offers the first systematic integration of three highly influential research traditions in the domains of language and concept acquisition: Statistical Learning, Structural Alignment, and the Bayesian learning perspective. Chapters examine the parameters that constrain learning, address conditions that optimize learning, and offer explanations for cases in which implicit exemplar-based learning fails to occur. By exploring both the benefits and challenges children face as they learn from multiple examples, the book offers insight on how to better able to understand children's early unsupervised learning about language and concepts. Topics featured in this book include: Competing models of statistical learning and how learning might be constrained by infants' developing cognitive abilities. How experience with multiple exemplars helps infants understand space and other relations. The emergence of category-based inductive reasoning during infancy and early childhood. How children learn individual verbs and the verb system over time. How statistical learning leads to aggregation and abstraction in word learning. Mechanisms for evaluating others' reliability as sources of knowledge when learning new words. The Search for Invariance (SI) hypothesis and its role in facilitating causal learning. Language and Concept Acquisition from Infancy Through Childhood is an essential resource for researchers, clinicians and related professionals, and graduate students in infancy and early child development, applied linguistics, language education, child, school, and developmental psychology and related mental health and education services.

The Two Koreas and their Global Engagements (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Andrew David Jackson The Two Koreas and their Global Engagements (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Andrew David Jackson
R3,365 Discovery Miles 33 650 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book departs from existing studies by focusing on the impact of international influences on the society, culture, and language of both North and South Korea. Since President Kim Young Sam's segyehwa drive of the mid-1990s, South Korea has become a model for successful globalization. In contrast, North Korea is commonly considered one of the least internationally integrated countries. This characterization fails to account for the reality of the two Koreas and their global engagements. The opening essay situates the chapters by highlighting some significant contrasts and commonalities between the experiences of North and South Korea's history of engagement with the world beyond the Peninsula. The chapters explore both the longer-term historical influence of Korea's international contacts as well as specific Korean cultural, linguistic, and social developments that have occurred since the 1990s demise of the global Cold War and greater international integration.
