The Roman Empire rules the civilised world with an iron fist,
seemingly all-powerful and limitless. And yet, the power of Rome is
secured not by its mighty legions, but by small bands of warriors
and agents fighting a secret war. Tasked by the Emperor to explore
ancient temples, forgotten labyrinths and beast-haunted caverns,
they seek out artefacts hidden by the gods themselves, hunt
creatures of myth and face enemies that would use dark magic
against the empire. Broken Legions is a set of fantasy skirmish
rules for a war unknown to history, fought in the shadows of the
Roman Empire. Various factions recruit small warbands to fight in
tight, scenario-driven battles that could secure the mystical power
to defend - or crush - Rome. A points system allows factions to
easily build a warband, and mercenaries and free agents may also be
hired to bolster a force. Heroes and leaders may possess a range of
skills, traits and magical abilities, but a henchman's blade can be
just as sharp, and a campaign can see even the lowliest henchman
become a hero of renown.
If you have just picked up this book, the chances are that you are
the proud owner of a piece of chess software. Whether this is the
latest release of a sophisticated database package or a playing
program that came free with a magazine, then this book will help
you make the most of it.
Even basic chess software packages now usually have numerous
interesting features and working out how to use these effectively
is no easy task. Many players simply use a playing program to
practice against and a database program just for storing and
replaying games. Yet there is much more that can be achieved with
such packages and this book will show you how the experts do
it.
With this book you can: learn powerful techniques for organizing
and managing your chess data; discover proven, effective methods to
study the middlegame and endgame; learn how to most effectively
harness the power of a chess engine; efficiently analyze your own
strengths and weaknesses.
It's been said that "tactics are 99% of chess." This third volume

and vision in your own games. Nothing is left to chance in this
work. All materials have already shown their worth in Russian chess
instruction.

the once strictly guarded and time-tested Russian training methods,
the key to the 50-year Russian dominance of world chess.
Comprehensive Chess Course takes you from beginner to master.
There is much, much more to being a good live cash player than
simply playing the hand "correctly." The player needs to develop a
whole host of other skills. Jonathan Little, a top-ranking
professional poker player, teaches these skills. Jonathan is one of
the best instructors the game has ever seen and has an almost
unique ability to explain difficult poker concepts in simple terms:
Live No-Limit Cash Games covers when to play loose/aggressive; when
to play tight/aggressive; when playing passive can be the most
profitable approach and how to spot subtle tells-providing accurate
information about player types Jonathan also discusses: Bankroll
management; Game selection; Emotional control
Every chess player, from club level up, can improve their game by
using engines. That is the message of Matthew Sadlers
thought-provoking new book, based on many years of experience with
the worlds best chess software. You may not be able to replicate
their dazzling-deep calculations, but there is so much more your
engine can do for you than just checking variations! Matthew
Sadler, co-author of the ground-breaking bestseller Game Changer,
presents some unique methods to improve by using your engine. He
explains how in your opening preparation, instead of sifting
through masses of computer analysis you should play training games
against your engine. He also shows how to train your early
middlegame play, the conversion of advantages, your positional
play, and your defensive skills. And, of course: how to analyse
your own games. These generic training methods Sadler supplements
with concrete techniques. He explains how the top engines tackle
crucial middlegame themes such as entrenched pieces, whole board
play, attacking rhythm, exchanging pieces, the march of the Rooks
pawn, queen versus pieces, and many others. He also opens your eyes
to typical strategies that the engines found and fine-tuned in
popular openings such as the Kings Indian, the Grunfeld, the Slav,
the French and the Sicilian. Sadler illustrates his lessons with a
collection of fantastic games, explained with his trademark
enthusiasm. For the first time, the superhuman powers of the chess
engine have been decoded to the benefit of all players, in a rich
and highly instructive book.
The Bb5 Sicilian is a logical and practical weapon against Black's
most popular defense to 1 e4 and is an excellent choice for White
players who are fed up of constantly trying to keep abreast of the
latest developments in the Open Sicilian.
The early bishop move signals White intention to develop rapidly
and it can lead to both wild gambit play and calmer positional
waters. Significantly, this opening weapon has the seal of approval
from many of today's elite Grandmasters, including Vishy Anand,
Mickey Adams and Peter Leko, while Garry Kasparov utilized it
successfully in his famous Internet game versus 'the rest of the
world'.
Now, for the first time in many years, Richard Palliser provides a
comprehensive study of the Bb5 Sicilian and its many variations.
Using illustrative games, he examines both the crucial main lines
and the more unusual tries for White and Black, highlighting
tactical and positional ideas as well as move order nuances. A
study of this book will allow the reader to play both sides of this
opening with confidence.

This book examines what might be described as the "pure" Reti
Opening. White starts with 1 Nf3 and intends to meet 1...d5 with
the "Reti" response 2 c4. One of the major advantages of playing
these systems is that they rely far more on general strategic
understanding than rote memorisation. However, this does not mean
that Black is not set difficult problems to solve. In the modern
era these lines have mainly been championed by Vladimir Kramnik and
Lev Aronian. Both these players have frequently set very difficult
problems for their elite opponents with these complex systems. This
series provides an ideal platform to study chess openings. By
continually challenging the reader to answer probing questions
throughout the book, the Move by Move format greatly encourages the
learning and practising of vital skills just as much as the
traditional assimilation of opening knowledge. Carefully selected
questions and answers are designed to keep you actively involved
and allow you to monitor your progress as you learn. This is an
excellent way to study any chess opening and at the same time
improve your general chess skills and knowledge. * Essential
guidance and training in the Reti Opening * Analyses all key
variations * Utilizes an ideal Q+A approach to chess study
One of the most infamous and decisive battles of the Second World
War, Stalingrad was a turning point of the Eastern Front, showing
that the German juggernaut was not invincible. This Campaign Book
for Bolt Action allows players to refight the fierce Battle of
Stalingrad, from the actions of the surrounding area and within the
city itself, to the encirclement, concerted relief efforts, and the
final attempted breakout. New, linked scenarios, rules, troop
types, and Theatre Selectors provide plenty of options for both
novice and veteran players alike.
A multinational array of top grandmasters explain the difference in
thinking between professional and amateur chess players, and how
the amateur can bridge the gap. It usually takes at least a decade
of sustained effort for even the most talented player to reach the
grandmaster level this book cannot guarantee to make the reader a
chess grandmaster, but it is certainly a healthy nudge in the right
direction. The editors, ex-British Champion GM Jacob Aagaard and
three-time Scottish Champion GM John Shaw, have recruited a line-up
of strong grandmasters to share their wisdom.
Fred Reinfeld-his name is known to almost every chess player in the
United States. But his accomplishments? These are not so well
known. Reinfeld was one of the strongest players of his time,
ranking just below Reuben Fine and Sammy Reshevsky (against whom he
had a plus score). He was an accomplished author of some of the
best chess books of the thirties and forties. Fred Reinfeld was a
respected numismatist, still recognized as a pioneer in the field
sixty years later. He was an editor or major contributor to almost
every major chess magazine of the thirties through the
forties-Chess Review, Chess Correspondent, and Chess Life. This
book is the first book on this remarkable man whose works have
contributed more to chess than any other author. Many of Reinfeld's
comments, ideas, and thoughts are quoted in their original context.
Known his own time for the strength of his annotations, many are
preserved here for the modern reader. Reinfeld lives!]
Master the fascinating game of Go with this expert guidebook. Go is
a two-player board game that first originated in ancient China but
is also very popular in Japan and Korea. There is significant
strategy and philosophy involved in the game, and the number of
possible games is vast--even when compared to chess. Go has
enthralled hundreds of millions of people in Asia, where it is an
integral part of the culture. In the West, many have learned of its
pleasures, especially after the game appeared in a number of hit
movies, TV series, and books, and was included on major Internet
game sites. By eliciting the highest powers of rational thought,
the game draws players, not just for the thrills of competition,
but because they feel it enhances their mental, artistic, and even
spiritual lives. Go! More Than a Game is the guidebook that uses
the most modern methods of teaching to learn Go, so that, in a few
minutes, anyone can understand the two basic rules that generate
the game. The object of Go is surrounding territory, but the
problem is that while you are doing this, the opponent may be
surrounding you! In a series of exciting teaching games, you will
watch as Go's beautiful complexities begin to unfold in
intertwining patterns of black and white stones. These games
progress from small 9x9 boards to 13x13 and then to the traditional
19x19 size. Go! More Than a Game has been completely revised by the
author based on new data about the history of early Go and the
Confucians who wrote about it. This popular book includes updated
information such as the impact of computer versions on the game,
the mysterious new developments of Go combinatorics, advances in
Combinatorial Game Theory and a look at the current international
professional playing scene.
Ian Nepomniachtchi, challenger to Magnus Carlsen's World
Championship title in 2021, is an outstanding chess talent. "Nepo"
as he is universally known is a fascinating player and this book
assesses his career and analyses his original and creative style in
great depth with numerous deeply annotated games. Nepo is one of
the very few players in the world to hold (at least prior to the
match) a plus score (four wins to one with six draws) against
Carlsen in classical chess. Nepo and Carlsen are peers and first
started playing each other in the Under-12 category of the World
Youth Championship in 2002. In that event, Nepo edged out Carlsen
on tie-break. At that time he out-rated Carlsen by 100 points and
was generally considered to be the more promising of the two
prodigies. Nepo is a fascinating player who loves open and
irrational positions and excels when on the attack. Unsurprisingly,
he cites Mikhail Tal as his all-time favorite player and says Tal
is the player who has exerted the greatest influence on him. As
with that great Latvian genius, Nepo thrives on anarchy and chaos
and has frequently got the better of Carlsen in games with
mind-boggling complications. He is also lethal when he has the
initiative. Nepo has steadily climbed the world rankings and his
finest achievement was his victory in the 2020/2021 Candidates'
tournament with 81/2/14 points (+5-2=7) which gave him the right to
challenge Carlsen for the world title.
Part of Starting Out series, this book revisits the fundamentals of
the Reti, examining the key moves and plans for both sides. It
explains the reasoning behind key moves and ideas. It is suitable
for improvers, club players and tournament players.
This is an instructional manual for improving chess players. It
helps you to sharpen your tactics and learn to play dynamic
attacking chess while studying the most entertaining gambits. This
volume deals with various openings after 1.e4 e5, and lines covered
include: Marshall Attack, Traxler variation, Frankenstein-Dracula
variation, Falkbeer Counter-Gambit and more.
With Duel in the Sun, players can take command of the doughty
Desert Rats of Montgomery's 8th Army, the fast-moving and
hard-hitting raiders of the Long Range Desert Army (LRDG), or
Rommel's mighty Afrika Korps, to recreate some of the most iconic
battles of World War II - Operations Compass, Crusader and Torch,
Tobruk, and Alamein, amongst others. Offering scenarios, special
rules and new troop types, this Theatre Book for Bolt Action also
takes players across the Mediterranean from North Africa, where
they can follow the Italian Campaign from the invasion of Sicily,
through the battles for Anzio and Cassino, to the final assaults on
the Gothic Line.
