Global Challenges to CSR and Sustainable Development - Root Causes and Evidence from Case Studies (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021):... Global Challenges to CSR and Sustainable Development - Root Causes and Evidence from Case Studies (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Stephen Vertigans, Samuel O. Idowu
R4,961 Discovery Miles 49 610 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines and analyzes the challenges programmes for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and sustainable development are facing in global management practice. It looks at the dichotomy of a general and popular demand for responsible and resilient management, and the counterplayers that impact the positive effect of such efforts. The book assembles latest research looking at the root causes for this opposition, and new case studies that showcase the dilemma and possible solutions to overcome it. Overall, the book juxtaposes short terminism within CSR programmes and longer term sustainable development, mis-allocation of resources and failed promises associated with CSR, and sketches pathways how CSR and sustainable development can be directed towards the most pressing issues.

Economics of the SDGs - Putting the Sustainable Development Goals into Practice (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021): Edward B. Barbier,... Economics of the SDGs - Putting the Sustainable Development Goals into Practice (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Edward B. Barbier, Joanne C. Burgess
R3,000 Discovery Miles 30 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the first book that employs economics to develop and apply an analytical framework for assessing progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The authors explore the historical context for the underlying sustainability concept, develop an economics-based analytical framework for assessing progress towards the SDGs, and discuss the implications for sustainability policy and future research. Economics is concerned with analysing the trade-offs in allocating scarce means to achieve various ends. Thus, economic methods are ideally suited to assessing how progress towards one or more SDGs may come at the expense of achieving other goals. Such interactions are inevitable in meeting the 2030 Agenda over the next decade, given that the SDGs include different economic, social, and environmental elements. Although it may be possible to make progress across all 17 goals by 2030, it is more likely that improvement toward all goals will be mixed. For example, we may have reduced poverty or hunger over recent years, but the way in which this progress has been achieved - e.g. through economic expansion and industrial growth - may have come at the cost in achieving some environmental or social goals. On the other hand, progress in reducing poverty is likely to go hand-in-hand with other important goals, such as eliminating hunger, improving clean water and sanitation, and ensuring good health and well-being. Assessing these interactions is essential for guiding policy, so that countries and the international community can begin implementing the right set of environmental, social and economic policies to achieve more sustainable and inclusive global development.

Corporate Social Responsibility in Rising Economies - Fundamentals, Approaches and Case Studies (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020):... Corporate Social Responsibility in Rising Economies - Fundamentals, Approaches and Case Studies (Paperback, 1st ed. 2020)
Nayan Mitra, Rene Schmidpeter
R3,979 Discovery Miles 39 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Emerging economies arguably have different socio-fiscal dynamics compared to developed economies. On one side they have the need for corporate interventions in national development, on the other hand, they do not have enough research to support the agenda. In recent times there has been a conscious effort to legislate Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in some of these countries in order to bring about sustainable development. Yet, it is this legislation, which is debated among many others. This book provides its readers with a comprehensive interpretation of the various CSR perspectives in emerging economies through academic research and case studies from practice. It not only points out the challenges, the debates, but also the dynamics of implementation and the impact of such CSR spent. This book therefore is targeted both towards academics as well as practitioners in an attempt to bring about an active academic-industry interface as CSR as a management function is part of dynamic social science.

Responding to Crisis - A Rhetorical Approach to Crisis Communication (Hardcover, New): Dan Pyle Millar, Robert L. Heath Responding to Crisis - A Rhetorical Approach to Crisis Communication (Hardcover, New)
Dan Pyle Millar, Robert L. Heath
R4,330 Discovery Miles 43 300 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In recent years, researchers and practitioners have explored the nature, theory, and best practices that are required for effective and ethical crisis preparation and response. The consequences of being unprepared to respond quickly, appropriately, and ethically to a crisis are dramatic and well documented. For this reason, crisis consulting and the development of crisis response plans and protocols have become more than a cottage industry. Taking a rhetorical view of crisis events and utterances, this book is devoted to adding new insights to the discussion, and to describing a rhetorical approach to crisis communication. To help set the tone for that description, the opening chapter reviews a rhetorical perspective on organizational crisis. As such it raises questions and provokes issues more than it addresses and answers them definitively. The other chapters can be viewed as a series of experts participating in a panel discussion. The challenge to each of the authors is to add depth and breadth of understanding to the analysis of the rhetorical implications of a crisis, as well as to the strategies that can be used ethically and responsibly. Central to this analysis is the theoretic perspective that crisis response requires rhetorically tailored statements that satisfactorily address the narratives surrounding the crisis which are used by interested parties to define and judge it. This volume will be of value to scholars and students interested in crisis communication, and is certain to influence future work and research on responding to crises.

Rupert Hodder
R5,141 Discovery Miles 51 410 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The book explores the nature of these different attitudes, discussing the different attitudes as they are found in practice in the Philippines. It considers how they are bound up with material progress, and how they have a crucial impact, on business, politics and region-centre relations.

Sustainable Negotiation - What Physics Can Teach Us About International Negotiation (Hardcover): Eliane Karsaklian Sustainable Negotiation - What Physics Can Teach Us About International Negotiation (Hardcover)
Eliane Karsaklian
R1,309 Discovery Miles 13 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This new and innovative book introduces a new approach to negotiation, where 'Sustainable Negotiation' replaces the old notion of winning. Instead of 'doing a deal' and walking away, negotiation becomes a continuous process of solving problems and creating relationships with no term limits, which better reflects the real world today. Just as we strive to create a sustainable approach to the natural world, we need to do the same with people if we want to keep working together and building a more harmonious business world. The book borrows from the field of physics to make the case that negotiators need to know what is not visible so they can explain what is visible. This alignment gives negotiators the tools to think differently about what they see, helping them to look beyond traditional negotiation techniques and to develop a forward-thinking and sustainable approach to business. Written by a leading international negotiation expert, Sustainable Negotiation introduces a completely new perspective on international negotiation, providing practical, field-tested examples, experiments and guidance to enable readers to implement sustainable negotiation in the real world.

Adam Rose, David Leibowitz
R3,877 Discovery Miles 38 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is written by three commercial lawyers. Their clients often ask them as much for help in getting out of a contract as in getting them into one in the first place. Built around two business case studies, the book highlights the various legal issues that a business must address when faced with a contract it wants to walk away from. In the first instance the business needs to discover whether it is as shackled by a contract as it thinks it is. In many cases a contract is not as binding as it might initially appear - Getting Out of a Contract explains the circumstances in which this applies. It then goes on to explore how to minimize the damage should the agreement be inescapable and helps the reader to understand what the consequences of any actions might be. Written in plain English, the authors manage to demystify complicated aspects of English law for the non-lawyer. This book will help managers to: c address how they make contracts; c avoid making wrong decisions because they fail to appreciate what contracts they actually have or how to get round them; c become more attuned to the legal ins and outs of contracts, enabling them to use lawyers more cost-effectively Company secretaries, finance directors and managers at all levels will find Getting Out of a Contract accessible and an invaluable business planning tool.

Energy Dynamics and Climate Mitigation - An Indian Perspective (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021): Asheem Srivastav Energy Dynamics and Climate Mitigation - An Indian Perspective (Paperback, 1st ed. 2021)
Asheem Srivastav
R3,242 Discovery Miles 32 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book analyzes the current approaches to energy management in India that is based on a carbon-intensive pathway, which if continued, may have serious implications for climate change mitigation with severe consequences for human health and survival. India, being a signatory to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Kyoto Protocol, and the Paris Agreement, is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions; however, the country's dilemmas are whether to prioritize environment over economy or vice versa and also whether economic growth can be sustained by relying on carbon-intensive development. Those are explored in this book. The Indian economy is poised for a big leap in the near future, and the topmost priority of the government is to ensure energy security, accessibility, and affordability for nearly 1.5 billion people. Currently, 70% of India's electricity generation comes from coal- and oil-based thermal power plants, and only 12-15% of energy is generated from renewable sources. Experts are of the view that the demand for coal and gas power generation will continue to rise and is expected to reach the equivalent of nearly 2 billion t of oil by 2030. The annual consumption of natural gas is expected to increase fourfold to 200 billion m3 a year in the near future, and its share in the primary energy basket of coal, oil, and gas will rise from 6.5% to 15% by 2030. This will not only cause a significant drain on foreign reserves but will also pose an enormous challenge to policymakers and scientists. This book serves as a useful guide in shaping India's future energy policy.
