This volume includes the papers accepted for the First
International Conference on Electronic Commerce and Web
Technologies, which was held in Greenwich, UK, on September 4-6,
2000. The conference is the first of a series of planned
conferences on these topics with the goal to bring together
researchers from academia, practitioners and commercial developers
from industry, and users to assess current methodologies and
explore new ideas in e-commerce and web technology. The conference
attracted 120 papers from all over the world and each paper was
reviewed by at least three program committee members for its merit.
The program committee finally selected 42 papers for presentation
and inclusion in these conference proceedings. The conference
program consisted of 14 technical sessions and two invited talks
spread over three days. The regular sessions covered topics such as
web application design, intellectual property rights, security and

The Internet is currently the fastest-growing and most widely-used technology for doing business electronically. Yet, despite its obvious advantages, it is clear that it is fraught with problems: customers are reluctant to use it for purchasing products; surfing is time-consuming and costly; and users are rapidly becoming disillusioned with its failure to fulfill early promises. In an invaluable follow-up to "Doing Business Electronically", Doing Business on the Internet provides a collection of readings which look objectively at what Internet commerce can offer both the consumer and the provider. Primarily of interest to researchers and students in areas such as electronic commerce, business strategy, management of information systems, project management and organisational change, it will also be of interest to corporate managers involved with developing their company's Internet-based strategies and to anyone interested in how to buy or sell on the Internet.
Among the many changes brought by the Internet is the emergence of electronic commerce over the Web. E-commerce activities, such as the online exchange of information, services, and products, are opening up completely new opportunities for business, at new levels of productivity and profitability. In parallel with the emergence of e-commerce, intelligent software agents as entities capable of independent action in open, unpredictable environments have matured into a promising new technology. Quite naturally, e-commerce agents hold great promise for exploiting the Internet's full potential as an electronic marketplace. The 20 coherently written chapters in this book by leading researchers and professionals present the state of the art in agent-mediated e-commerce. Researchers, professionals, and advanced students interested in e-commerce or agent technology will find this book an indispensable source of information and reference.
This easy-to-read guide to portal/electronic services development
will help organizations achieve more proficient project management
in developing gateways to electronic services. The presentation
discusses the most important challenges and the factors for
success, addressing both the electronic services themselves and the
gateways to them. While most books address the technical,
managerial, or economic issues, Managing Electronic Services adopts
an organizational perspective. This approach not only integrates
the managerial, technical and economic issues, but also puts them
into the context of a customers or users requirements and
expectations.

The emergence of network facilities and the increased availability
of personal computer systems over the last decade has seen a
growing interest in the use of computers to support cooperative
work. This volume contains the proceedings of the sixth European
Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), a
multi-disciplinary area which embraces both the development of new
technologies and an understanding of the relationship between
technology and society. These proceedings present a collection of
papers that encompass activities in the field, treating such
subjects as virtual environments, uses of the Internet, studies of
cooperative work and emerging models, studies of groupware systems
in use in real-world settings, and theories and techniques to
support the development of cooperative applications. The articles
feature emerging technologies alongside new methods and approaches
to the expansion of this important class of applications. This work
reflects the current research and practice within CSCW. It will
appeal to both researchers and practitioners whose work involves
computer and information science, human-computer interaction,
information systems, hypermedia, organisational/social informatics
and social studies of science and technology.
**Winner of the UALE Book Award 2021** Amazon is the most powerful
corporation on the planet and its CEO, Jeff Bezos, has become the
richest person in history, and one of the few people to profit from
a global pandemic. Its dominance has reshaped the global economy
itself: we live in the age of 'Amazon Capitalism'. 'One-click'
instant consumerism and its immense variety of products has made
Amazon a worldwide household name, with over 60% of US households
subscribing to Amazon Prime. In turn, these subscribers are
surveilled by the corporation. Amazon is also one of the world's
largest logistics companies, resulting in weakened unions and
lowered labor standards. The company has also become the largest
provider of cloud-computing services and home surveillance systems,
not to mention the ubiquitous Alexa. With cutting-edge analyses,
this book looks at the many dark facets of the corporation,
including automation, surveillance, tech work, workers' struggles,
algorithmic challenges, the disruption of local democracy and much
more. The Cost of Free Shipping shows how Amazon represents a
fundamental shift in global capitalism that we should name,
interrogate and be primed to resist.
The internet of things (IoT) has the potential to change how we
live and work. It represents the next evolution of the computing

communication technologies within machines at home and in the
workplace and across a broad range of industrial processes. The
effect will be a radical restructuring of industries and business
models driven by massive flows of data providing new insights into
how the man-made and natural worlds work. The Internet of Things
& Business explores the business models emerging from the IoT
and considers the challenges as well as the opportunities they pose
to businesses around the world. Via real examples and a range of
international case studies, the reader will develop an
understanding of how this technology revolution will impact on the
business world as well as on broader society.

The next generation internet, the Internet of Things, cannot work
without an Internet of Value. The Internet of Value or ValueWeb,
for short allows machines to trade with machines and people with
people, anywhere on this planet in real-time and for free. The
problem is that our old system cannot work that way, as it takes
days to process and costs a fortune. Using a combination of
technologies from mobile devices, wearables and the bitcoin
blockchain, fintech firms are building the ValueWeb regardless.
What does that mean for financial institutions, governments and
citizens? This book provides the answers. Chris Skinner one of the
most authoritative voices on FinTech anywhere has provided us
another timely and thoughtful look into the fascinating convergence
of technology, e-commerce, and finance that is changing the world.

relationship between the development of Information and
Communication Technologies (ICT) and the process of
financialization of economies on a global scale, with a special
focus on the impacts of both in Brazil. The book explains the
influence of ICT in the emergence and consolidation, especially
from the 1980s, of new forms of operation and management of the
globalized financial system-forms that are highly connected and
operated in "real time" with intensive use of technological
features-and how these advances are related to the economic and
social changes in question. The book goes on to describes how
contemporary capital markets work, where the search for earnings is
leveraged by sophisticated mathematical models, robots and
automated trading software that seek financial gains in the
milliseconds scale.

"A systematic review of the structure and context of the
blockchain-derived economic model... (the book) describes
cryptoeconomics in connection with the game theory, behavioral
economics and others in simple understandable language."-Wang Feng,
founder of Linekong Interactive Group and Mars Finance, partner in
Geekbang Venture Capital Blockchain technology has subverted
existing perceptions and is the start of an economic revolution,
called, cryptoeconomics. Blockchain is a key component of
cryptoeconomics. Vlad Zamfir, a developer of Ethereum, defines this
term as "a formal discipline that studies protocols that governs
the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services
in a decentralized digital economy. Cryptoeconomics is a practical
science that focuses on the design and characterization of these
protocols". This book explains the structures of blockchain-derived
economic models, their history, and their application. It uses
real-world cases to illustrate the relationship between
cryptoeconomics and blockchain. Blockchain technology solves trust
issues. A blockchain application can restrict behavior on the
blockchain through a reward and punishment system that enables
consensus in an innovative way. The greatest significance of
cryptoeconomics lies in guaranteeing safety, stability, activity,
and order in a decentralized consensus system. Security and
stability are achieved mainly by cryptographical mechanisms.
Activity and order are achieved through economic mechanisms.
Cryptoeconomics and Blockchain: Ignighting a New Era of Blockchain
discusses the most popular consensus algorithms and optimization
mechanisms. With examples explained in clear and simple terms that
are easy to understand, the book also explores economic mechanisms
of blockchain such as game theory and behavioral economics.
