The concept of evidence-based medicine was launched in 1991 as a new paradigm to inform medical practice and has risen to be regarded as the gold standard. It rapidly gained the attention of medics, health service managers and the general media as it presented a means to improve efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery. Despite its stunning success in capturing the health agenda, the campaign that launched evidence-based medicine has also attracted criticism, particularly from clinicians and philosophers concerned about its selective views of knowledge and evidence, and for its denigration of reasoning, clinical experience and judgement.Evidence-Based Medicine traces this movement from its launch to its meteoric rise, examining what it has done for healthcare and medicine in the context of changes in science policy and the long-running criticism held against the movement for its inherent weaknesses. As evidence-based medicine will remain an important feature of healthcare in the decades to come, this book is perfect for healthcare professionals, medical scientists, health service managers and public health experts looking for a critical examination of the topic.
Herbert Rosenfeld makes a powerful case both for the intelligibility of psychotic symptoms and the potential benefits of their treatment by psychoanalytic means.

In addition to performing its prime function as a vehicle for scientific communications of varied colora- tions, Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry is again focusing on two subjects which it treats in depth. One of these is a book issue dealing with the transglutaminase reaction. The other is this issue that deals with induction and modulation of enzymes. This is a very broad subject that calls for broader coverage than could be included in one book issue. However, I have elected to include only certain contributions that serve as general examples of the principles involved. There are six articles on enzyme regulation in hepatocyte culture. These include arginase and argino-succi- nate synthetase, y-glutamyl transferase and plasminogen activitor. Other regulatory enzymes that are discussed are protein kinases, 2,3-bisphosphoglycerate synthetases, carbamoyl phosphate synthetase, heme oxygenase, cytochrome P-450, tyrosine hydroxylase, fatty acid synthetase, acetyl eoA carboxylase, among others. Also included is the regulation of several enzyme messengers RNAs. As in the past, subscribers to the journal will receive this double volume as a continuation of regular issues of the journal Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry. This double volume will also be available separately in the form of a book issue to interested readers through Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. v.A. Najjar Part I Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry 53;54,11-21 (1983). (c) 1983, Martinus 1\ ij hoff Publishers. Boston. Printed in The Netherlands.

The successful implementation of evidence into practice is dependent on aligning the available evidence to the particular context through the active ingredient of facilitation. Designed to support the widely recognised PARIHS framework, which works as a guide to plan, action and evaluate the implementation of evidence into practice, this book provides a very practical 'how-to' guide for facilitating the whole process. This text discusses: undertaking an initial diagnosis of the context and reaching a consensus on the evidence to be implemented; how to link the research evidence with clinical and patients' experience and local information in the form of audit data or patient and staff feedback; the range of diagnostic, consensus building and stakeholder consultation methods that can be helpful; a description of facilitator roles and facilitation methods, tools and techniques; some of theories that underpin the PARIHS framework and how these have been integrated to inform a revised version of PARIHS Including internationally-sourced case study examples to illustrate how the facilitation role and facilitation skills have been applied in a range of different health care settings, this is the ideal text for those interested in leading or facilitating evidence based implementation projects, from the planning stage through to evaluation.
Mapping BRICS Media is the first comprehensive and comparative study of the emerging media landscape in the world's most dynamic and fastest growing markets. This pioneering collection focuses on one of the key topics in contemporary international relations - the emergence of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) - a grouping that includes some of the world's largest populations and fastest growing economies. The volume brings together leading scholars, mainly from the BRICS nations, to examine how the emergence of the BRICS media will impact on global media and communication. Contextualizing the rise of the BRICS nations within the broader shifts in global power relations, the chapters investigate the unprecedented growth of the BRICS media within a 'multi-polar' world, evaluating the media landscapes in the individual BRICS countries, their histories, and their journalism practices, as well as analyzing emerging inter-BRICS media relationships. Accessible and comprehensive, the book provides a critical guide to the complex debates about the impact of the 'rise of the rest' on the media globe and how far this poses a challenge to the Western-dominated world order and its media systems.

The increasing multicultural population in the US and the world is reflected in the patient population that most Facial Plastic Surgeons are seeing in their practice environments. Facial plastic surgery procedures and aesthetic goals had been based predominantly on European Caucasian models of anatomy and cultural influences/ Currently, a wide variety of racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds are included in most facial plastic surgery practice experiences. A recognition and sensitivity to those differences and influences should be part of a modern facial plastic surgeon's skill set. With an understanding of the tremendous clinical relevance of multicultural aesthetics, this issue of Facial Plastic Surgery Clinics addresses Anatomy, Aesthetic goals, Patient evaluation, and Surgical techniques according to various ethnic, racial, and cultural needs. Some of the topics presented are Considerations in non-Caucasian facelift procedures; Scar variations by skin type; Laser and face peel procedures in non-Caucasians; Rhinoplasty in the Mestizo nose; Rhinoplasty in the African-American nose; Rhinoplasty in the Asian nose; Facial aesthetic surgical goals in patients of different cultures; and Concepts of beauty in a multicultural world.
This practical manual reviews salient topics in Adolescent Medicine. The volume is practitioner-centered, focusing on the symptoms that bring a teenager to the clinician. Every chapter begins with a very brief clinical vignette, highlighting the patient's chief complaint or primary issue of concern. The handbook is divided into five primary sections: (1) Well Adolescent Care to include chapters such as the Annual Physical and Immunizations in Adolescence; (2) Common Problems of Adolescence such as Acne and Low Back Pain; (3) Reproductive Health Care issues such as Menstrual Disorders and Teen Pregnancy/Options Counseling; (4) Urgent Care matters including Acute Chest Pain and Scrotal Pathology: Pain and Masses; and finally, (5) Special Considerations to include chapters such as Cyberbullying and Sexting and Tobacco Use and Cessation Counseling.Chapters follow a uniform format with vignette as described above, followed by multiple choice questions designed to test the readers knowledge. Salient features related to the chapter topic follow, including relevant clinical "pearls" such as history, physical exam, laboratory and diagnostic studies and treatment strategies. For each chapter, issues that are unique to managing illness in adolescents are highlighted to distinguish them from adults and younger children. When applicable, a broad differential diagnosis is provided to help guide the reader. Easy to read tables are included to highlight and clearly summarize key aspects of the topic and the chapters end with answers to the Board-Style questions presented at the start.
This is the first book to clearly and fully demonstrate the process of using theory to guide nursing research and professional practice. It describes a step-by-step format for evaluating nursing theory's applicability to research, a format that links theory (both middle-range and grand theory) to research on a wide range of clinical populations and care delivery systems. The book describes how theory analysis models are used to examine various nursing phenomena as they relate to nursing research and professional practice, and provides key examples of how this is accomplished. The book takes the reader through the process of using a theory to guide research from inception of a research question to evaluation of future research. International experts in theory-related nursing research describe twelve theories that have previously been applied to research and practice and six theories that can be applied to future research and practice. Using a consistent analytic framework, each chapter applies a specific theory (from either nursing, psychology, sociology, or management) to a particular clinical population or care delivery issue. These encompass clinical, administrative, and educational nursing settings. The consistent format facilitates ease of comparison across different theories. Generous use of figures and tables further demonstrates the complex relationships between and among concepts embedded in the theories. Key Features: Demonstrates a systematic format for evaluating middle-range and grand nursing theory's applicability to research Links theory to clinical practice at patient population and care delivery levels Provides a useful template for students of nursing disciplinary knowledge development Presents the scholarship of international researchers of theory-related nursing Includes theories from nursing, psychology, sociology, and management |
