Society expects corporations to play by a new set of rules today.
Customers, shareholders and investors have come to demand greater
accountability, ethics and responsibility from business. We also
want companies to help protect the environment, build roads, fight
corruption, advance human rights, support the arts, contribute to
local communities, compete globally and create shareholder value at
the same time. In short, we want corporations to do well and to do
good, even during a challenging economy. In the aftermath of ethics
scandals and the largest oil spill in history, this mandate has
never been stronger. Doing Good lays out 55 key rules business
leaders can follow to prove responsibility and improve their
company's reputation, recognizing the intense scrutiny coming from
consumers, policymakers and the media. Chapter-by-chapter, Doing
Good makes a clear case for a new standard of corporate
responsibility, especially for large publicly traded companies who
have more opportunities and resources. Seasoned with practical,
common-sense, advice from notable business and political leaders,
and a survey of best practices from leading companies, Doing Good
challenges today's corporations to help build a better humanity. It
covers governance, ethics, philanthropy, diversity, customer
relations, globalism, privacy and more. Doing Good is a must read
for anyone who cares about the increasingly important role of
business in our society.
Replete with engaging stories and written in a down-to-earth style,
this book provides the first and only road map for finding success
and happiness in life's most common yet underrated role—that of
the follower. What kinds of behaviors and responses do most bosses
want from those they lead? Which jobs seem desirable and exciting
but present work conditions in which followers are likely to fail
or be unhappy? What's the best way to communicate bad and good news
to a superior? Winning at Following: Secrets to Success in
Supporting Roles answers these questions and covers many more
topics that are highly relevant to everyone, for those who report
to others as well as for managers, directors, CEOs, or other acting
leaders. Individuals who are satisfied in their roles as followers
will discover information that helps them to optimize their success
and fulfillment at work, while dissatisfied followers—anyone
struggling as a follower and searching for directions for positive
change—will find this book extremely valuable as a road map to
greater meaning, success, and satisfaction at work and in life.
Readers will gain the critical direction and tools for fulfillment
in their roles as followers—in whatever capacity that may
be—and understand what they need to do to please their superiors
as well as to solve the common problems and challenges that
followers face. The book also explains how individuals can identify
their followership style and discover the types of organizations
where they are most likely to thrive. The final chapter provides
guidance on how to overcome common, serious problems that followers
experience, such as micromanaging bosses, sexual harassment,
unethical directives from superiors, and disrespectful colleagues.
Urban development cooperation needs innovative solutions. Despite
many efforts, international assistance has failed to address the

to raise awareness about the value of corporate social

In 1975, I talked to an editor at the Indianapolis Star about my
being slandered. He introduced me to reporter Carolyn Pickering and
asked her to follow up. I gave her copies of the Retail Credit
report and Tuohy's malpractice. She said she'd look into it and did
write a story, which was published on June 3, 1976, headlined
"Attorney Fees Seen Forcing Liquidation Of Insurance Firm"
discussing Judge Dugan's attempted reinsurance of UNAC's assets.
Judge Dugan held an emergency hearing and awarded $300,000 in legal
fees to be paid by UNAC to various attorneys. The emergency existed
because Judge Dugan was going on vacation. A Chicago firm was paid
$167,362.50; A Virginia firm was paid $64,237.50; Dillon, McCarty,
Hardeman and Cohen (Dillon was the former Democratic attorney
general for Indiana) was paid $17,887. Dillon and Gregory Hahn,
treasurer of the Marion County Democratic Central Committee, were
appointed by Judge Dugan as local counsel for the out of state
firms, which means Dillon and Hahn were involved in total payments
exceeding $230,000. The firm of Tuohy, Gleason and Mercer was paid
$48,960. Tuohy was paid even though he had no records of time spent
and didn't perform any legal functions on behalf of the company.

United States of America v. Michael T. Dugan, II, Southern District
of Indiana, Indianapolis Division, Cause No. IP88-78-CR. Other
persons admitted paying bribes and taking payoffs. The jury verdict
was returned May 26, 1989, finding Dugan guilty on a variety of
charges of bribery and extortion, including a true bill of
unlawfully obtaining money (a $1,000 bribe) from James Eckman,
President of First Equity Security Life Insurance Company (which
Eckman had admitted).
A book that will change how you think and transform how you live
Forget everything you thought you knew about how to motivate people
- at work, at school, at home. It is wrong. As Daniel H. Pink
explains in his paradigm-shattering book Drive, the secret to high
performance and satisfaction in today's world is the deeply human
need to direct our own lives, to learn and create new things, and
to do better by ourselves and the world. Along the way, he takes us
to companies that are enlisting new approaches to motivation, and
introduces us to the scientists and entrepreneurs who are pointing
a bold way forward.

Financial security during retirement is no guarantee. In fact,
Outliving Your Money is the #1 fear among retirees. Not far behind
are the fears of Losing Principal, High Health Care Costs, and
Higher Taxes. Most people, including many financial advisors, do
not know that each of these fears can be replaced with guarantees
and control. This book shows you how. What would it be worth to
eliminate these fears and not have to worry about uncertainty? You
can guarantee financial security during retirement.
Debates about global warming, a growing shortage of clean water,
deforestation, pollution, degradation of the oceans, biodiversity
and waste permeate public spaces and private discussions.
Unsustainable growth is the underlying force driving all these
crises yet is virtually absent from public discourse. Since World
War II, growth or growing production has become a mantra, an
unquestionable axiom, for political, business and economic leaders
as a means to strengthen the economy. Tragically, no distinction is
discerned between sustainable and unsustainable growth. This books
explores why unsustainable growth is unrealistic and catastrophic
and examines its consequences on people and the earth. In addition
to analyzing the environmental impact, the book will examine the
unequal distribution of wealth resulting from capitalism and
unsustainable growth.
Whitey Basson, remarkable business leader, is often hailed as a ‘genius’ by his peers. Basson became a legend when, in the most famous takeover deal in SA, he bought OK Bazaars for the nominal sum of a single Rand. In this authorised biography, the award-winning financial journalist Niel Joubert pieces together the complex, fascinating story of how Basson grew Shoprite from eight small stores valued at R1 million into the largest retailer in Africa, and the 35th largest retailer in the world.
Based on years of research, including many hours spent with Basson, Joubert traces his life in colourful detail, from a Porterville farm, to Pep Stores, to where he sets out to apply the 'Pep formula' to the unforgiving world of food.
Starting from a small office filled with boxes, Basson built Shprite via growth and acquisitions, swallowing Grand Bazaars, Checkers, and others before the famous OK Bazaars deal, and finally reaching his lifelong target of eclipsing Pick n Pay.
The information revolution has ushered in a data-driven
reorganization of the workplace. Big data and AI are used to
surveil workers and shift risk. Workplace wellness programs
appraise our health. Personality job tests calibrate our mental
state. The monitoring of social media and surveillance of the
workplace measure our social behavior. With rich historical sources
and contemporary examples, The Quantified Worker explores how the
workforce science of today goes far beyond increasing efficiency
and threatens to erase individual personhood. With exhaustive
detail, Ifeoma Ajunwa shows how different forms of worker
quantification are enabled, facilitated, and driven by
technological advances. Timely and eye-opening, The Quantified
Worker advocates for changes in the law that will mitigate the ill
effects of the modern workplace.
For organizational and personal change to happen and be
sustainable, there must first be a system of thought balanced
against action. Williams and his concept of "congruence" provide an
alternative to the often chaotic, unbalanced ways in which change
is currently understood and its accomplishment attempted. He
challenges the organizational model of compartmentalized
structures, offers a persuasive refutation of the fashionable
paradigm of organizational transformation (one based on dominance
and control), and argues a provocative notion that innovation is
actually the successful result of reworking what has not worked
before. A new look at the processes that create organizational
movement, Williams' latest book is a guide for leaders, managers,
consultants, and corporate practitioners, and a new way for
students, teachers, and researchers to rethink the entire change
process. Williams has found through his own experience that people
focus too closely on the "action" behaviors of organizations and
too little on the thinking behind them. The result is that gaps
open up and create pitfalls in our efforts to achieve excellence in
human and organizational performance. Williams suggests that
organizations innovate themselves into failure. To counter this, he
provides a true systemic approach to enhancing organizational
performance, a system of what he visualizes as "congruence," a way
to fit thoughts to actions. It is as much a way of thinking, says
Williams, as it is a method toward goals--goals that are clear and
essential to the survival of any organization. Drawing liberally
upon his own expertise as a teacher, consultant, and therapist, he
helps others to appreciate the successes thatcan be realized when
balance and the alignment of thought and action are achieved, and
when the search for change becomes a planned, focused, and systemic
endeavor.
Max Gunther's lost classic, now in a new Classics edition. Some
people think you're either born lucky or not. But what if you could
actively get lucky? As Max Gunther shows in this page-turning
classic, some people really are luckier than others - and not by
accident. Lucky people arrange their lives in characteristic
patterns. They tend to position themselves in the path of onrushing
luck; they tend to go where events are moving fastest and where
they can find their lucky break Lucky people take risks but not
silly ones. They stick with a cause, a job, or a partner, but not
when all hope is lost. In short, they move with life, not against
it. This book gives you 13 different techniques by which you can
discover and take advantage of life's good breaks, while minimising
the effects of its bad ones.
