Dual-Career Couples in the Public Sector - A Management Guide for Human Resource Professionals (Hardcover, New): Willa M.... Dual-Career Couples in the Public Sector - A Management Guide for Human Resource Professionals (Hardcover, New)
Willa M. Bruce, Christine M. Reed
R2,150 Discovery Miles 21 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

As increasing numbers of women enter the workforce, it has become more and more common to find husbands and wives who are both committed to careers in the public sector. This book offers the first detailed analysis of this important new segment of the workforce. Based on extensive surveys, it presents a comprehensive profile of public sector career couples and explores solutions to common problems faced by human resource managers in this field.

The authors first examine dual-career couples as a segment of the workforce, the lifestyles of these couples, and the challenges they face in work and family life. Current management practices in the public sector are carefully considered, with special attention to the recruitment and retention of dual-career couples in the face of prevailing anti-nepotism policies. In addition to providing guidance on legislative issues and judicial policies that affect the employment of dual-career couples, the authors develop a model of interpersonal and management skills for integrating dual-career couples into the workplace. Finally, strategies for resolving policy obstacles are suggested. A valuable tool for human resources professionals, this book will also be of interest in the areas of labor relations, public administration, and policy studies.

Voluntary and Public Sector Collaboration in Scandinavia - New Approaches to Co-Production (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Bjarne... Voluntary and Public Sector Collaboration in Scandinavia - New Approaches to Co-Production (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Bjarne Ibsen
R3,629 Discovery Miles 36 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In thirteen chapters, the contributors to this volume analyse the different dimensions of a new form of collaboration, termed collective co-production, in the Scandinavian countries. It is a characteristic of the Scandinavian countries - Sweden, Norway and Denmark - that they have both a large public and voluntary sector. For decades, the dominant type of collaboration between the two sectors has consisted of the public sector providing financial support to organisations in the voluntary sector, while the activities are undertaken by the organisation itself. In recent times, however, a new discourse has emerged, with a strong political focus on developing closer collaboration between the two sectors. The book analyses collective co-production between the voluntary and public sectors, and identifies what distinguishes this form of collaboration from others. It looks at the scope of collective co-production, how and why it differs between welfare areas, as well as the political vision for co-production and the extent to which it lives up to those expectations. This discourse promotes a type of collaboration wherein organisations, associations and volunteers can participate in the implementation of tasks for which public institutions are responsible. The book is a valuable resource for professionals in voluntary organizations and public welfare units working with co-production and for researchers and students in the fields of civil society, voluntary sector and welfare policy.

Legacy of June Pallot - Public Sector Financial Management Reform (Hardcover, New): Susan Newberry Legacy of June Pallot - Public Sector Financial Management Reform (Hardcover, New)
Susan Newberry
R2,718 Discovery Miles 27 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book brings together a selection of June Pallot's most significant work. Written from a country (New Zealand) that led the world in many aspects of its financial management reforms, this work provides thoughtful comment on matters that remain of crucial importance today, especially the constitutional need to carefully monitor and respond to the reform initiatives and motives of executive government. Revisiting accounting issues and developments in the public sector, and reminding readers that the fundamental purpose of government accounting is different from that for the business sector, this book provides a timely reminder of the need for caution when considering the application in the public sector of accounting techniques devised for business purposes. June Pallot's legacy challenges accountants in the public sector to find better ways of addressing "collective decision-making under new governance approaches," proposes ways forward and offers suggestions for future research. This book, prepared by her colleague Susan Newberry, is a tribute to June's work.

Cost and Optimization in Government (Hardcover): Aman Khan Cost and Optimization in Government (Hardcover)
Aman Khan
R2,744 Discovery Miles 27 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Responding to a critical need in government for ways to manage costs better and improve productivity, The author gives practitioners and advanced students of public administration not just the statistical methods they require but also the hands-on skills they need and will use daily. His book introduces cost and management accounting, shows how to use decision-making tools in solid problem-solving situations, and lays out measures to help manage an organization's productivity. Also covered are such topics as cost estimation, benefit-cost analysis, simulation, inventory analysis, network modeling, mathematical programming, game theory, and more. The result is a readable and focused resource that facilitates the reader's grasp of two of the most critical elements in the successful operation of any organization: cost and optimization.

The book is organized in three parts. Part I deals with costs in government and emphasizes cost behavior, cost analysis, and cost accounting. Part II treats basic optimization techniques that are useful in cost management. Included are classical optimization, network analysis, mathematical programming, and games and decisions. In Part III the author deals with special cases in cost and optimization, particularly multivariate analysis, productivity management, and some related topics in general management. The book succeeds in presenting these complex issues clearly and in an accessible manner, and adds examples from public sector experience which will resonate with practitioners and students alike.

Strategic Management in Non-Profit Organizations - An Administrator's Handbook (Hardcover): Robert D. Hay Strategic Management in Non-Profit Organizations - An Administrator's Handbook (Hardcover)
Robert D. Hay
R2,746 Discovery Miles 27 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Administrators and directors of non-profit organizations (NPOs) face most of the same challenges and problems that confront their counterparts in profit making organizations. And while there are certain concepts of administration that are fairly universal in nature, they have to be applied sensitively to the unique situations facing every NPO. Author Robert D. Hay suggests that there is a body of knowledge that can be mastered by NPO managers that can transform a hit-or-miss approach into a professional method for achieving professional results within the context of each NPO's own unique environment, strengths and weaknesses, and managerial philosophy. Comprehensive in its approach, "Strategic Management in Non-Profit OrganizationS" covers not only the development of strategic management planning, but also its integration into the organization's operative functions, such as operations, marketing, personnel, and finance. A distinctive feature of the book is a self-management evaluation of various objectives, strategies, and policies of the various functions which each non-profit organization has to perform. The self-evaluations will aid administrators not only in making strategic decisions but also in evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of their performance in accomplishing the objectives.

The three introductory chapters of Part I provide essential background material on the nature of NPOs, the nature of management, and the nature of strategy. Part II is concerned with strategy formulation as it is conditioned by each NPO's specific philosophy and goals. Integrating the overall mission into the operative functions of any NPO--operations, marketing, personnel, and financing functions--is addressed in Part III. In strategy implementation, the focus of Part IV, the major emphasis is placed on the managerial functions which have to be performed: planning, acquiring, organizing, leading, coordinating, and evaluating. Based on 15 years of research of 65 different non-profit organizations, "Strategic Management of Non-Profit OrganizationS" is an in-depth response to the needs expressed by these organizations. This volume will be profitably read by all who have a vital interest in providing the services of NPOs as well as those associated with public agencies.

Comparative Public Management - Putting U.S. Public Policy and Implementation in Context (Hardcover, New): Randall Baker Comparative Public Management - Putting U.S. Public Policy and Implementation in Context (Hardcover, New)
Randall Baker
R2,710 Discovery Miles 27 100 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this new approach to a comparative text in public management, Randall Baker examines how, why, and to what extent the public sector around the world has shared in the management revolution. The book is designed to isolate and demonstrate the essential American-ness of the United States' public service by holding it up to the mirror of other developed democracies. While there are lessons to be learned from other countries, Baker and his expert contributors examine the complexities of making comparisons across cultures, even within broadly similar democratic systems, and urban-industrial economies.

The volume concludes with a list of sectoral cases. These comprise most of the main dimensions of public-sector activity around the world. They are the main elements of many graduate professional degrees in public affairs, and the material has been written with the needs of both practitioners and teachers in mind. This is essential reading for all concerned with public management and administration as well as comparative government.

In conclusion, insiders to China provide current assessments of the situation in China currently in the field of public administration.

Restructuring State and Local Services - Ideas, Proposals, and Experiments (Hardcover, New): Arnold Raphaelson Restructuring State and Local Services - Ideas, Proposals, and Experiments (Hardcover, New)
Arnold Raphaelson
R2,140 Discovery Miles 21 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Under pressure from both the Federal government and private citizens, local and state governments are restructuring their services, including the areas of education, highway, and transportation. While the federal government wants to reassign responsibilities to local governments, voters want greater efficiency and lower taxes via privatization. This edited collection considers these pressures, the responses from state and local governments, and specific experiments in privatizing local services.

The book's opening chapter presents an overview of the changing landscape, while the following chapters consider possibilities in both education and highway services. In education, interdistrict school choice and state-local structures are considered. Highway services are seen in federal-state and state-private relationships. Reporting on a variety of experiments, each chapter illustrates a type of service or arrangement for restructuring governmental services.

Capturing the Heart of Leadership - Spirituality and Community in the New American Workplace (Hardcover, New): Gilbert W... Capturing the Heart of Leadership - Spirituality and Community in the New American Workplace (Hardcover, New)
Gilbert W Fairholm
R2,699 Discovery Miles 26 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book seeks to promote a new spiritual approach to organizational leadership that goes beyond visionary management to a new focus on the spiritual for both leader and led. Reflecting on the current crisis of meaning in America, this book takes up the search for significance in peoples' worklives--in the products they produce and in the services they offer. Recognizing that the new corporation has become the dominant community for many-- commanding most of our waking hours by providing a focus for life, a measure of personal success, and a network of personal relationships--Fairholm calls on business leaders to focus their attention on the processes of community among their stakeholders: wholeness, integrity, stewardship, and morality. Spiritual leadership is seen here as a dynamic, interactive process. Successful leadership in the new American workplace, therefore, is dependent on a recognition that leadership is a relationship, not a skill or a personal attribute. Leaders are leaders only as far as they develop relationships with their followers, relationships that help all concerned to achieve their spiritual, as well as economic and social, fulfillment.

Public Choice Theory and Local Government - A Comparative Analysis of the UK and the USA (Hardcover): George A. Boyne Public Choice Theory and Local Government - A Comparative Analysis of the UK and the USA (Hardcover)
George A. Boyne
R2,783 Discovery Miles 27 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This text evaluates the validity of a key proposition of public choice theory: that competition is associated with superior performance by governmental organizations. Three forms of competition in local government are identified: competition between local authorities; competition between councils and private contractors; and competition between parties for political power. The extent and consequences of competition are assessed in both the UK and USA. The analysis is used to draw conclusions on the effects of competition and the validity of public choice theory.

On Systemic Balance - Flexibility and Stability in Social, Economic, and Environmental Systems (Hardcover, New): M.A. Goldberg On Systemic Balance - Flexibility and Stability in Social, Economic, and Environmental Systems (Hardcover, New)
M.A. Goldberg
R2,147 Discovery Miles 21 470 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Arguing that society has pursued short-run approaches to decision-making that in the long term are counterproductive, On Systemic Balance presents a multidimensional and interdisciplinary alternative to problem solving. The usual method of dealing with problems such as housing shortages and environmental protection is a narrow, simplistic, quick, and intrusive solution. This type of solution ultimately ignores the many interrelationships within a system. The long term effect is imbalance and destabilization. The author reinforces his argument with economic and environmental examples. He then introduces alternative approaches to decision making and applies them to several settings. By stressing slow incremental intrusions, regard for interrelationships, and longer term balance, the author suggests that we might redefine problems more appropriately, develop less harmful and more enduring solutions, and provide a more stable environment.

Goldberg maintains that we cannot truly predict the consequences of our actions, particularly large-scale actions taken over a short period of time. He presents his argument first by equipping the reader with a set of multidisciplinary tools and second by demonstrating the poor results of our present decision-making style. He then introduces an alternative approach which borrows from biology, economics, management, and anthropology and applies it to three distinct settings.

Cyber Security - Economic Strategies and Public Policy Alternatives (Hardcover, illustrated edition): Michael P. Gallaher,... Cyber Security - Economic Strategies and Public Policy Alternatives (Hardcover, illustrated edition)
Michael P. Gallaher, Albert N Link, Brent R. Rowe
R3,065 Discovery Miles 30 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Cyberspace is the nervous system of today's advanced economies, linking critical infrastructures across public and private institutions. The authors of this book comprehensively explore the many issues surrounding this unique system, including private sector cyber security investment decisions and implementation strategies, public policy efforts to ensure overall security, and government's role in the process. The authors draw primarily on case-based information and focused survey data to describe and critique the economic strategies and broad technical approaches that private sector organizations adopt to secure their information technology infrastructure. Based on an analysis of these strategies, they propose several public policy responses that go beyond those that have come from recent policy reports. These responses include the construction of a national database of reliable and cost-effective information suitable for benchmarking, and public research and development support for innovations and infrastructures. The authors discuss the goal of such efforts: to shift private investments toward more socially-optimal proactive levels and to develop standards and protocols to ensure a more effective use of cyber security technologies. The first systematic analysis of the economics of cyber security, this insightful book will be of great interest to private and public sector managers and strategists involved in cyber security, as well as academics and researchers in the fields of economics, management, information systems, systems engineering, political science, and public policy.

Governance Structures and Mechanisms in Public Service Organizations - Theories, Evidence and Future Directions (Hardcover,... Governance Structures and Mechanisms in Public Service Organizations - Theories, Evidence and Future Directions (Hardcover, Edition.)
Andrea Calabro
R2,789 Discovery Miles 27 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book addresses the nexus of issues exploring governance structures and mechanisms in public service organizations, thus contributing to the development of disciplines that focus on public management. It goes beyond the state of the art by addressing a number of specific issues in a more systematic fashion. The book's interdisciplinary focus is a particularly valuable asset, as its topic is situated at the crossroads of a number of fields, including public management, business administration, corporate governance, policy studies, political science, sociology, and third sector studies, all of which offer important perspectives and are important for the development of public management and public services. The book covers more than Italy and Norway and focuses specifically on public service organizations, addressing more aspects of their governance structures and mechanisms than any other book available today. The unique presentation of features related to the governance and management of different actors (state-owned enterprises, local public utilities, ministries, municipalities, citizens, etc.), involved at different levels in the production and provision of public services, makes it possible to compare and contrast these different perspectives and opens new avenues of theoretical collaboration and development.

Ancient Rome - City Planning and Administration (Paperback, New edition): O.F. Robinson Ancient Rome - City Planning and Administration (Paperback, New edition)
O.F. Robinson
R1,135 Discovery Miles 11 350 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Rome was a huge city. Running it required not only public works and services but also specialised law. This innovative work traces the development of that law and system in the main areas of administration. The book incorporates and develops previous historical and topographical works by relating their findings to the Roman legal framework, building up a portrait of public administration, unusually comprehensive for the ancient world.

Bargaining With Uncertainty - Decision-Making in Public Health, Technologial Safety, and Environmental Quality (Hardcover,... Bargaining With Uncertainty - Decision-Making in Public Health, Technologial Safety, and Environmental Quality (Hardcover, New)
Merrie G. Klapp, Sy D. Friedman
R2,136 Discovery Miles 21 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this intriguing volume, Merrie G. Klapp explains how regulatory decisions in such crucial areas as public health, technological safety, and environmental quality are molded and recast. She finds that scientific uncertainty is a key factor, with agencies, interest groups, Congress, and the courts attempting to shift responsibility of proof or varying the standard of proof according to the pressures brought to bear on the issue. In general, Professor Klapp finds that when citizens or industrialists organize to protest a regulatory decision and when the legislature or the courts take scientific uncertainty into account, then the initial regulatory decision is changed.

By contrast with the United States, where scientific uncertainty is used as a public resource and rationale for change, in France and Britain scientific uncertainty is treated as a private resource. French and British scientists do not treat regulatory decisions as opportunities to reveal scientific uncertainty to the public--instead, discussions of uncertainties are held behind closed doors and, when reports are made to the public about regulatory decisions, scientific information is presented as if it were certain. Bargaining with Uncertainty will be a provocative analysis to those scholars and researchers concerned with the making of public policy as well as those concerned with risk assessment in public health, the environment, and technology.

Ethics in the Public Sector (Paperback): D.M. Mello, K.G. Phago, N.I. Makamu, N. Dorasamy, N. Holtzhausen Ethics in the Public Sector (Paperback)
D.M. Mello, K.G. Phago, N.I. Makamu, N. Dorasamy, N. Holtzhausen
R395 R365 Discovery Miles 3 650 Save R30 (8%) Ships in 7 - 17 working days

From ancient times, the conduct of human beings, and what is deemed acceptable and unacceptable behaviour, has been an intriguing and much-debated topic for people from all walks of life. This is even more so for public officials, both appointed and elected, who by nature of the public duty they fulfil, are held to a higher moral standard by the broader society. Unethical conduct not only impacts negatively on the social contract that government has with the public but also affects the rights of citizens, who are taxpayers. Ethics in the public sector is being published at a time when the South African public sector is grappling with serious issues relating to ethics, with startling revelations of conduct by government officials that directly contradicts the provisions of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, which prescribe high standards of ethical behaviour. Ethics in the public sector is arranged in such a way as to provide a unique understanding of public sector ethics. It includes discussions of two other African countries, Botswana and Namibia, to provide perspective. Main themes include the theory and philosophical foundation of public sector ethics, the African context of ethics, the policy framework for ethics, role players in ethics, causes of unethical behaviour and remedies for unethical behaviour. It also comes at a time when most universities across South Africa are reconsidering curricula for alignment and relevance to the challenges that public officials and politicians deal with daily. Ethics is an area that has thus far received insufficient attention both at universities and in practice. Ethics in the public sector is aimed at students, officials and politicians.

Modernising Work in Public Services - Redefining Roles and Relationships in Britain's Changing Workplace (Hardcover, 2007... Modernising Work in Public Services - Redefining Roles and Relationships in Britain's Changing Workplace (Hardcover, 2007 ed.)
Geoffrey E. Wood, P James, I Roper, Pauline Dibben
R2,782 Discovery Miles 27 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume analyzes changing work and employment in British public services. In doing so, it begins by critically engaging with debates around the ideological, regulatory and social drivers of change, and their impact on workforce composition, service ethos, equality, and the role of trade unions. It then analyzes employment relationships within fluid organisational boundaries, tackling the key issues of partnership and trust, pay and rewards and employment security. The concluding section reflects on public service productivity and its comparative context.

Leverage for Good - An Introduction to the New Frontiers of Philanthropy and Social Investment (Hardcover): Lester M. Salamon Leverage for Good - An Introduction to the New Frontiers of Philanthropy and Social Investment (Hardcover)
Lester M. Salamon
R2,688 Discovery Miles 26 880 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

With the resources of both governments and traditional philanthropy barely growing or in decline, yet the problems of poverty, ill-health and environmental degradation ballooning daily, it is increasingly clear that new models for financing and promoting social and environmental objectives have become urgently needed. Fortunately, however, a significant revolution appears to be underway in the way in which social and environmental purposes are being financed. The heart of this revolution is a massive explosion in the instruments and institutions being deployed to mobilize private resources in support of social and environmental objectives. Where earlier such support was limited to charitable gifts, now a bewildering array of new instruments and institutions has surfaced-loans, loan guarantees, private equity, barter arrangements, social stock exchanges, bonds, secondary markets, investment funds, and many more-all of them designed to leverage not just the tens of billions of dollars of philanthropic grants but the hundreds of billions, indeed trillions, of dollars of private investment capital. While the changes under way are inspiring and by no means trivial, however, they remain largely uncharted in any systematic fashion. This monograph, and of the companion volume for which it also serves as the introductory chapter, is designed to overcome this problem, to provide the first comprehensible and accessible roadmap to the full range of important new developments taking place on the frontiers of philanthropy and social investment. In the process, it seeks to broaden awareness of these developments, increase their credence and traction, and make it possible to maximize the benefits they can generate while acknowledging the limitations and challenges they also face.

New Public Managers in Europe - Public Servants in Transition (Hardcover): David Farnham, Annie Hondeghem, Sylvia Horton, John... New Public Managers in Europe - Public Servants in Transition (Hardcover)
David Farnham, Annie Hondeghem, Sylvia Horton, John Barlow
R2,811 Discovery Miles 28 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Many changes are taking place in the public sector across Europe as emphasis is being placed on the efficient use of resources, the way that public organisations are managed and their relationship with clients and customers. Post-bureaucratic structures are being introduced and a more managerialist culture is being established. A new type of public servant is emerging - the public manager. This book consists of three theoretical chapters and nine case studies of public managers, which examine these changes amongst member states of the European Union. The concluding chapter identifies common trends and explains similarities and differences in terms of the constitutional, political, cultural and economic contexts.

Regionalism and Regional Devolution in Comparative Perspective. (Hardcover): Mark Rousseau, Raphael Zariski Regionalism and Regional Devolution in Comparative Perspective. (Hardcover)
Mark Rousseau, Raphael Zariski
R2,711 Discovery Miles 27 110 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In political science and sociology, great controversies exist concerning the desirable balance between national and local power, the relevant factors in sub-national decision making, and the social consequences of centralization and decentralization. "Regionalism and Regional Devolution in Comparative Perspective" explores these controversies and the elements which give rise to them. Students of comparative politics, political sociology, Western European history, international affairs, or comparative social institutions can turn to this book for a balanced assessment of the alternative structures of decentralized political power which are emerging in various Western democracies.

Efficiency in the Public Sector (Hardcover, 2002 ed.): Kevin J. Fox Efficiency in the Public Sector (Hardcover, 2002 ed.)
Kevin J. Fox
R4,265 Discovery Miles 42 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Regardless of where we live, the management of the public sector impacts on our lives. Hence, we all have an interest, one way or another, in the achievement of efficiency and productivity improvements in the activities of the public sector. For a government agency that provides a public service, striving for unreasonable benchmark targets for efficiency may lead to a deterioration of service quality, along with an increase in stress and job dissatisfaction for public sector employees. Slack performance targets may lead to gross inefficiency, poor quality of service, and low self-esteem for employees. In the case of regulation, inappropriate policies can lead to unprecedented disasters. Examples include the decimation of fish stocks through mismanagement of fisheries, and power blackouts through inappropriate restrictions on electricity generators and distributors. Efficient taxation policies minimise the tax bill for citizens. In all of these cases, efficient management is required, although it is often unclear how to assess this efficiency. In this volume, several authors consider various aspects and contexts of performance measurement. Hence, this volume represents a unique collection of advances in efficiency assessment for the public sector by leading researchers in the field. Efficiency in the Public Sector is divided into two sections. The first is titled "Issues in Public Sector Efficiency Evaluation" and comprises of chapters 1-4. The second section is titled "Efficiency Analysis in the Public Sector - Advances in Theory and Practice." This division is somewhat arbitrary, in the sense there are significant overlapping themes in both sections. However, it serves to separate chapters that can be characterised as dealing with broader issues (Section I), from chapters that can be characterised as focusing on specific theoretical problems and empirical cases (Section II).

Transport in a Free Market Economy (Hardcover): David Banister, Kenneth Button Transport in a Free Market Economy (Hardcover)
David Banister, Kenneth Button
R2,796 Discovery Miles 27 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Part 2 presents the empirical evidence on ten years of airline deregulation in the United States and this review is matched by an assessment of the different situation in Europe where national governments are under pressure to follow the same path.

Public Policy in Asia - Implications for Business and Government (Hardcover): Mukul G Asher, David Newman, Thomas P. Snyder Public Policy in Asia - Implications for Business and Government (Hardcover)
Mukul G Asher, David Newman, Thomas P. Snyder
R2,734 Discovery Miles 27 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Drawing upon experts in Asian economics, public management, law, and the physical and political sciences from leading universities around the world, the editors of this unusual volume examine the critical challenges now facing this important sector of the world: growth, income security, and fiscal reform; governance and public management; and technological innovation and the environment. The contributors address these policy questions from a variety of perspectives, recognizing their complexity and multidisciplinary implications. The result is a balanced mix of theory, applications, and case studies, providing depth and substance in a readable manner. Specialists in public policy and international commerce in fields of government and business will find this wide-ranging book, with its many challenging conclusions, to have broad, useful relevance to their studies and applications to their work.

For thirty years, Asia has been experiencing rapid economic growth and transformation. Higher standards of living, social and demographic transitions, and rising expectations have had a profound impact on many aspects of public policies in the region. Policy makers have found some issues, such as government finance and poverty reduction, easier to address, while issues such as the need for social safety nets, economic competition, and corporate governance have been relatively neglected. The 1997 economic crisis, the causes and implications of which are still being debated, complicated matters significantly and raised the stakes in the task of solving public problems. It is in this context that comparative public policy with an Asian focus has emerged as a subject of study in its own right. And it is that which the volume editors and their contributors explore now. In doing so they help to set an agenda for the worldwide policy debate already looming.
