The Routledge Handbook of Translation Studies and Linguistics (Paperback): Kirsten Malmkjaer The Routledge Handbook of Translation Studies and Linguistics (Paperback)
Kirsten Malmkjaer
R1,555 Discovery Miles 15 550 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Routledge Handbook of Translation Studies and Linguistics explores the interrelationships between translation studies and linguistics in six sections of state-of-the-art chapters, written by leading specialists from around the world. The first part begins by addressing the relationships between translation studies and linguistics as major topics of study in themselves before focusing, in individual chapters, on the relationships between translation on the one hand and semantics, semiotics and the sound system of language on the other. Part II explores the nature of meaning and the ways in which meaning can be shared in text pairs that are related to each other as first-written texts and their translations, while Part III focuses on the relationships between translation and interpreting and the written and spoken word. Part IV considers the users of language and situations involving more than one language and Part V addresses technological tools that can assist language users. Finally, Part VI presents chapters on the links between areas of applied linguistics and translation and interpreting. With an introduction by the editor and an extensive bibliography, this handbook is an indispensable resource for advanced students of translation studies, interpreting studies and applied linguistics.

Human Issues in Translation Technology (Paperback): Dorothy Kenny Human Issues in Translation Technology (Paperback)
Dorothy Kenny; Series edited by Jenny Williams
R1,405 Discovery Miles 14 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Translation technologies are moulded by and impact upon humans in all sorts of ways. This state-of-the-art volume looks at translation technologies from the point of view of the human users - as trainee, professional or volunteer translators, or as end users of translations produced by machines. Covering technologies from machine translation to online collaborative platforms, and practices from 'traditional' translation to crowdsourced translation and subtitling, this volume takes a critical stance, questioning both utopian and dystopian visions of translation technology. In eight chapters, the authors propose ideas on how technologies can better serve translators and end users of translations. The first four chapters explore how translators - in various contexts and with widely differing profiles - use and feel about translation technologies as they currently stand, while the second four chapters focus on the future: on anticipating needs, identifying emerging possibilities, and defining interventions that can help to shape translation practice and research. Drawing on a range of theories from cognitive to social and psychological, and with empirical evidence of what the technologization of the workplace means to translators, Human Issues in Translation Technology is key reading for all those involved in translation and technology, translation theory and translation research methods.

The Routledge Handbook of Translation and Ethics (Hardcover): Kaisa Koskinen, Nike K Pokorn The Routledge Handbook of Translation and Ethics (Hardcover)
Kaisa Koskinen, Nike K Pokorn
R7,075 Discovery Miles 70 750 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Routledge Handbook of Translation and Ethics offers a comprehensive overview of issues surrounding ethics in translating and interpreting. The chapters chart the philosophical and theoretical underpinnings of ethical thinking in Translation Studies and analyze the ethical dilemmas of various translatorial actors, including translation trainers and researchers. Authored by leading scholars and new voices in the field, the 31 chapters present a wide coverage of emerging issues such as increasing technologization of translation, posthumanism, volunteering and activism, accessibility and linguistic human rights. Many chapters provide the first extensive overview of the topic or present new takes on established areas. The book is divided into four parts, with the first covering the most influential ethical theories. Part II takes the perspective of agents in different contexts and the ethical dilemmas they face, while Part III takes a critical look at central institutions structuring and controlling ethical behaviour. Finally, Part IV focuses on special issues and new challenges, and signals new directions for further study. This handbook is an indispensable resource for all students and researchers of translation and ethics within translation and interpreting studies, multilingualism and comparative literature.

Translation and Translation Studies in the Japanese Context (Hardcover, New): Nana Sato-Rossberg, Judy Wakabayashi Translation and Translation Studies in the Japanese Context (Hardcover, New)
Nana Sato-Rossberg, Judy Wakabayashi; Nana Sato-Rossberg
R4,956 Discovery Miles 49 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Japan is often regarded as a 'culture of translation'. Oral and written translation has played a vital role in Japan over the centuries and led to a formidable body of thinking and research. This is rooted in a context about which little information has been available outside of Japan in the past. The chapters examine the current state of translation studies as an academic discipline in Japan and a range of historical aspects (for example, translation of Chinese vernacular novels in early modern times, the role of translation in Japan's modernization, changes in stylistic norms in Meiji-period translations, 'thick translation' of indigenous Ainu place names), as well as creative aspects of translation in modern and postwar Japan. Other chapters explore contemporary phenomena such as the intralingual translation of Japanese expressions embedded in English texts emanating from diasporic contexts, the practice of pre-translation or writing for an international audience from the outset, the innovative practice of reverse localization of Japanese video games back into Japanese, and community interpreting practices and research.

German and English - Academic Usage and Academic Translation (Paperback): Dirk Siepmann German and English - Academic Usage and Academic Translation (Paperback)
Dirk Siepmann
R1,299 Discovery Miles 12 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

German and English: Academic Usage and Academic Translation focuses on academic and popular scientific/academic usage. This book's brief is both theoretical and practical: on the theoretical side, it aims to provide a systematic, corpus-based account of current academic usage in English and in German as well as of the translation problems associated with various academic genres; on the practical side, it seeks to equip academic translators with the skills required to produce target-language text in accordance with disciplinary conventions. The main perspective taken is that of a translator working from German into English, but the converse direction is also regularly taken into account. Most of the examples used are based on errors that occurred in real-life translation jobs. Additional practice materials and sample translations are available as eResources here: www.routledge.com/9780367619022. This book will be an important resource for professionals aspiring to translate academic texts, linguists interested in academic usage, translation scholars, and graduate and post-graduate students.

Using CAT Tools in Freelance Translation - Insights from a Case Study (Hardcover): Paulina Pietrzak, Michal Kornacki Using CAT Tools in Freelance Translation - Insights from a Case Study (Hardcover)
Paulina Pietrzak, Michal Kornacki
R1,688 Discovery Miles 16 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the impact of applying computer-assisted (CAT) tools in freelance translation toward better understanding translators' strategies, preferences, and challenges in using new technologies and identifying areas of enhancement in translator training. The volume offers a brief overview of the latest developments in technology in translation, examining such issues as the effect on the translation process and the dynamics of the translator-technology interaction. Drawing on data from a study with active translators in Poland, Pietrzak and Kornacki examine the underlying factors underpinning translators' lack of engagement with these tools, including such issues as prevailing pre-conceptions around technology and limited knowledge hindering the most efficacious use of these resources and the subsequent impact on translator identity. Taken together, the book brings together these insights to help pinpoint freelance translators' needs more effectively and adapt training programmes accordingly. The volume will be of interest to scholars in translation studies with an interest in process and technology as well as active translators.

Understanding the Development of Translation Competence (Hardcover, New edition): Marta Chodkiewicz Understanding the Development of Translation Competence (Hardcover, New edition)
Marta Chodkiewicz
R1,390 Discovery Miles 13 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book sheds new light on translation competence and its development. After reviewing recent theoretical and empirical perspectives, the author presents the methodology and results of one of few comprehensive, longitudinal, combined process/product studies of translation competence acquisition, which has cognitive and pedagogical implications. Carried out among translation students with varying levels of foreign language proficiency before and after their first 7.5 months of translator education, the study investigates translation product quality, the strategicness of the translation process, the strategicness of external resource use, and translation principles. It also examines perceived translation difficulty and quality as well as the impact of directionality and foreign language proficiency.

Beate Sommerfeld, Eliza Pieciul-Karminska, Michael During
R1,572 Discovery Miles 15 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Orality, Ossian and Translation (Hardcover, New edition): Gerald Bar Orality, Ossian and Translation (Hardcover, New edition)
Gerald Bar; Created by Howard Gaskill
R1,288 Discovery Miles 12 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The aim of this book is to revisit Ossian, whilst broadening the scope of oral literature and translation to embrace cultural contexts outside of Europe. Epics, ballads, prose tales, ritual and lyric songs, as genres, existed orally before writing was invented. Serious debate about them, at least in modern Western culture, may be said to have begun with James Macpherson and Thomas Percy. Considering the ongoing debate on orality and authenticity in the case of Ossian, this book includes ground-breaking, previously published essays which provide essential information relating to orality, Ossian and translation, but have been frequently overlooked. Its contributions focus on the aspects of authenticity, transmediation, popular poetry and music, examining Scottish, German, Portuguese, Brazilian, African, American Indian, Indian and Chinese literatures.

Multilingual Mediated Communication and Cognition (Hardcover): Sandra L. Halverson, Ricardo Munoz Martin Multilingual Mediated Communication and Cognition (Hardcover)
Sandra L. Halverson, Ricardo Munoz Martin
R4,491 Discovery Miles 44 910 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This collection provides a snapshot of cutting-edge research in the rapidly developing area of cognitive approaches to multilingual mediated communication. The chapters cover important trends in current work, including: the increasing interaction between translation and interpreting research, the emergence of neuroscientific theories and methods, the role of emotion in translation processes, and the impact of cognitive aptitudes on translation performance. Exploring the interface with neighbouring research areas such as bilingualism, reading, and cognitive psychology, the book presents a variety of theoretical frameworks and constructs to support empirical research and theoretical development. The authors address new research areas, such as emotions and multisensory integration; apply new research constructs, such as eye-voice span; and expand the scope of cognitive translation studies to include agents other than the mediator. Documenting the growth in breadth and depth within cognitive translation and interpreting studies (CTIS) over the past decade, this is essential reading for all advanced students and researchers needing an up-to-date overview of cognitive translation and interpreting studies.

Controlled Document Authoring in a Machine Translation Age (Hardcover): Rei Miyata Controlled Document Authoring in a Machine Translation Age (Hardcover)
Rei Miyata
R4,488 Discovery Miles 44 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explains the concept, framework, implementation, and evaluation of controlled document authoring in this age of translation technologies. Machine translation (MT) is routinely used in many situations, by companies, governments, and individuals. Despite recent advances, MT tools are still known to be imperfect, sometimes producing critical errors. To enhance the performance of MT, researchers and language practitioners have developed controlled languages that impose restrictions on the form or length of the source-language text. However, a fundamental, persisting problem is that both current MT systems and controlled languages deal only with the sentence as the unit of processing. To be effective, controlled languages must be contextualised at the document level, consequently enabling MT to generate outputs appropriate for their functional context within the target document. With a specific focus on Japanese municipal documents, this book establishes a framework for controlled document authoring by integrating various research strands including document formalisation, controlled language, and terminology management. It then presents the development and evaluation of an authoring support system, MuTUAL, that is designed to help non-professional writers create well-organised documents that are both readable and translatable. The book provides useful insights for researchers and practitioners interested in translation technology, technical writing, and natural language processing applications.

Death in children's literature and cinema, and its translation (Hardcover, New edition): Veljka Ruzicka Kenfel, Juliane... Death in children's literature and cinema, and its translation (Hardcover, New edition)
Veljka Ruzicka Kenfel, Juliane House
R1,635 Discovery Miles 16 350 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book comprises studies on death in Spanish, British/American and German children's literature, cinema and audiovisual fiction; several translations from English and German into Spain are analysed. References to death were censored in Spain, as they were omitted or softened not to traumatise young readers. However, in the last twenty years, this taboo theme has been included to enable children and young adults to overcome the loss of a loved one as a necessary part of growing up. Contributions to this book show the historical development of this topic in different films and literary genres following, among others, a fantasy-mythological approach or a realist and objective one, helping children and young adults face death maturely and constructively.

Translation and Practice Theory (Hardcover): Maeve Olohan Translation and Practice Theory (Hardcover)

The Culture of Translation in Anglo-Saxon England (Hardcover): Robert Stanton The Culture of Translation in Anglo-Saxon England (Hardcover)
Robert Stanton
R3,036 Discovery Miles 30 360 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Most Old English literature was translated or adapted from Latin: what was translated, and when, reflects cultural development and the increasing respectability of English. Translation was central to Old English literature as we know it. Most Old English literature, in fact, was either translated or adapted from Latin sources, and this is the first full-length study of Anglo-Saxon translation as a cultural practice. This 'culture of translation' was characterised by changing attitudes towards English: at first a necessary evil, it can be seen developing increasing authority and sophistication. Translation's pedagogical function (already visible in Latin and Old English glosses) flourished in the centralizing translation programme of the ninth-century translator-king Alfred, and English translations of the Bible further confirmed the respectability ofEnglish, while AElfric's late tenth-century translation theory transformed principles of Latin composition into a new and vigorous language for English preaching and teaching texts. The book will integrate the Anglo-Saxon period more fully into the longer history of English translation.ROBERT STANTON is Assistant Professor of English, Boston College, Massachusetts.

Translation is a fact of life. It happens in as many ways as there are colours in the rainbow. And once we see it, we can never go back to not seeing it. Meaning (making), understanding (the 'right' and the 'wrong' things), relating (to the world and to each other) - it all starts with us. Nobody has lived this more colourfully than Michele Cooke, whose work the contributors to this book celebrate by showing what translating our truths is - and can be - all about.
